According to the Rangers, Cam Talbot will get his third start in four games tonight on Long Island.
Here's Henrik Lundqvist on the decision (via Blueshirts United)...
"It's not the first time I don't play back-to-back. We have a lot of games coming up here, so I listen to the coach. I feel pretty good, but it is a challenge to play back-to-backs and Talbot is playing the way he's playing so it might be a good decision to split (these two games)."
"That's my goal heading into this game, to give the guys a big lift and give them confidence back there. It's a big thing to have two goalies back there you can have confidence in, so the guys don't have to worry when Hank is not in there."
...a bit surprised, but I'm ok with Talbot getting the nod over Hank. AV said during his post game presser that he had already made the decision on his starting goaltender so this might have been the plan all along. Especially with Lundqvist coming off an injury and a heavy workload on the way.
...and I'm going to warn you guys right now, if the Rangers win, I better not hear one of you say Talbot should permanently replace Lundqvist or you'll be banned from the blog. Ok, you won't be banned, but you'll get a stern talking to because that is utter nonsense.
Meanwhile, Carl Hagelin, who took part in the morning skate and was, according to the Rangers roster, taken off of LTIR, says the plan is to take part in warmups and then Alain Vigneault will officially decide on whether he will be in the line-up...
"I am preparing myself to play," Hagelin said following the skate. "I think it's always frustrating to be on the sidelines, to be honest. You want to be out there to help the guys an you want to be a part of the team. It was frustrating, but at the same time I was able to get a lot of good work in. This is probably the strongest I have ever been."
...this team is in desperate need of a spark, so Hagelin is a must tonight. His speed should lead to much more puck possession, which AV's system needs to thrive.
Finally, despite providing absolutely zero on the ice other than undisciplined penalties, Taylor Pyatt will somehow remain in the line-up over Brandon Mashinter (via Bergen Record).
...it's not even that Pyatt isn't playing well, it's the perception that there's no accountability with this team. I don't understand how AV persists on sending Pyatt back out there when he continues to take stupid penalties.
...Mashinter would likely be a perfect fit in this game, which is always a physical affair. I have to wonder if he might have gotten dinged up in the Simmonds fight the other night as he hasn't seen the ice since.
No but trade bait , or maybe some leverage so he doesn't destroy their cap number. And Talbot really does look like the truth
It's back to back games after a lower body injury. Talbot can play so why not play him. Hank should be back in Thursday. This is what having a competent backup does for you. Loved Marty, but I think his time was done
Pyatt has to go! I'm trying to be patient and supportive of AV but moves like this make it tougher and tougher.
Guys. This talk of Hank losing his job, really? It's amazing how fast people turn on the one consistent positive the NYR have had since the 2005 lockout. Hank has earned the respect he has throughout the league, and the guy has been a consummate pro. He's already a NYR legend, and he's a great ambassador to the sport. Sure, he's benefited from the defensive systems of Renney & Torts, but the guy has been arguably the best goalie in the world (including the Olympics)
I for one am a fan who hopes Hank starts and ends his entire career as a NYR.
Maybe Hank needs to pull the "Tribute to the Move Stars of Sweden" out of storage to get his game back on track.
He wasn't bad last night, by any means. Like Staal said, you'll never win scoring 0 goals. That being said, until he's above .500, i dont think he gets a say in which games he starts.
I always expected Talbot to get this start, but I was thinking this would be his first. Of all the things AV could have seen coming, this was probably at the bottom of the list: Having to pick between starting goalies. Hank needs to find his game before this turns into Vancouver.
Who are the Islanders starting in net tonight? I hope the don't have some 3rd stringer making his first NHL start...we'll be doomed...
Not to upset the blog, but I would let go/trade Henrik tomorrow if they could get a top ten offensive force. Cam Ward, Fleury, Nikolai Khabibulin, and many other average goalies have won a cup. Few teams win without being able to score.
I think the Islanders will have a strong game tonight, just my gut feeling. Unfortunately, my gut feelings have been spot on this season. I hope Talbot can keep up the strong play because I do not see us scoring more than two tonight.
And way to hold out kid.........D. Stepan -8
I think that maybe Hanks contract demands are maybe a little too much and they want to show Hank that he can be replaced with a serviceable goalie. But then again, this could be AV himself....Vancouver redux?
I'm a bit surprised they are not using monster Mash on a pre-halloween encounter with their LI nemesis. Maybe he did get dinged. Not surprised Talbot gets the start. Kind of expected that
Just putting this out there. I don't remember seeing Pyatt take one shift in the third period last game, with Zucc jumping up on the third pair with Moore also getting a few more shifts here and there. Pyatt had the second least amount of play time, only more than Fast. While I believe Pyatt hasn't played nearly as bad as everyone is saying (aside from the penalties he's been taking), it's clear that AV is seeing that he needs a bit more speed and a spark in the lineup.
Hope to see a much more Aggressive drive to the net. Poor angle shots and blind passes at the blue line will only get the same results as last night . Boys just don't drive to the slot and that's so frustrating watch . That's where we miss Cally the most . And damn does it show .
Good for talbot knowing his background and how hard he's worked to get to this level. Really seems like a great guy on and off the ice. Tonight's gonna be a tough one lets hope he can handle the speed of the fishsticks and just stay focused, if the defense gives him a hand I think he will do just fine.dont even wanna keep going down this pyatt road he's awful and I don't see him contributing to any factor of the game. Also hope hagelin just does what he always did and just moves quickly looking for chances
It's nitpicky, I know, but Hank EARNED his nickname after putting up 30 wins in his 1st season. Can we hold off on the Talbot nicknames until next year?
I like giving Prime Minister Talbot the start. he's played well and he seems to be a real team guy! he always talks about wanting to back his guys and pump them up. I LOVE THE ENTHUSIASM! let's hope he stays reliable!
pyatt looks like he constantly struggles to keep up with the play. he is useless how does he stay in the lineup???
Absolutely agree! This is just leading to more problems for this team. This is going to get ugly now. Sorry but you don't sit the your best goalie when he finally starts to find his game. We all know Henrik gets better the more he plays as most good goalies do. Just hate seeing what's going with this team right now.
Kevin the Prince will stay the Prince. The King wont be dethroned ever unless he leaves... At least we have goaltending now.... we just need to score some fricken goals
I don't say permanently replace Henrik but at this point you should ride the one who puts wins on the board.
But if the Rangers don't get Hank resigned to a contract that makes sense for both parties, this will make trading him for someone(s) that can help this team that much easier.
I actually think we will lose tonight. The islanders have come on leaps and bounds last few seasons we have taken a few steps backwards. Need to find our gears again.
@JustinRP37 i disagree, think we find the back of the net against nabokov and win 4-2.
@JoshKaye Usually don't notice him even when he plays so I actually didn't realize that.
@JoshKaye Yes - I posted that last night about Sinker getting benched in the 3rd. I noticed that too - presumably because they were down a goal and Zucc was playing well. Is this showing some accountability? We'll see...
I noticed that too. I don't remember much of him late in the game. it's a shame he's not in the press box for this one.
@gravey94 And I don't think Hank got his til he won gold in Torino, no?
@MarkRennie pics of AV in compromising position with barnyard animal.
