Everyone's favorite rumor-monger Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun is back in full force as he reports that in response to the Rangers rough start to the season, Glen Sather has been calling around for help on defense.
Garrioch floats Dan Boyle as a possible target.
While it's not out of the question that Sather might be inquiring about available blueliners, assuming Boyle isn't on that list anymore after he was taken off the ice on a stretcher last night...
...wow, players standing up for a teammate? Forgot what that looked like. Hope the Rangers were watching.
But I digress...
...listen, I get Garrioch is more miss than hit when it comes to rumors, but there's no doubt he has connections in the league and if you remember he was the first one on the Gaborik trade last season, so I have to respect what he's reporting.
...to the actual rumor, with the Rangers defensemen a combined -31 on the season, I'd be pissed if Sather wasn't calling around. Now do I think he's ready to strike a deal today? Absolutely not, but if the Rangers don't win at least two out of their next three very winnable games, I think all bets are off.
...from what I've read, AV still has a number of fans on the Canucks roster, so you wonder if Sather would look to trade for a Canucks defenseman (Hamhuis?) who could bring a working knowledge of AV's system to a defensive unit struggling to implement it properly. I know a certain Rangers defenseman whose name rhymes with Birardi that Torts would love to have back blocking shots on his blueline.
I am not taking Boyle after that hit... we have enough concussion prone guys. How about Evander Kane or Yakupov?
Garrioch is spot on. Sather and 29 other GMs are absolutely calling around about defensive depth. That being said, I expect Girardi to be on the block this season simply due to the upcoming summer of free agents. Also, if the organization feels that someone like McIlrath is progressing to be NHL ready, it makes Girardi a very nice chip for a team in dire need of defensemen that play defense. Canucks possibly because of Torts, but I could also see teams like Edmonton, Ottawa, or Nashville showing interest.
why? Just give them some damn time to assimilate to the system, the most important defensemen (the ones struggling, basically) McD, G, and Staal, have played most of their pro careers playing a completely different defensive system. Give it some fucking time! This is why nothing EVER gets done under Sather, he's way too impatient. I will say though, I am not a Girardi fan, I really never have been, and I don't think he will succeed in AV's system. I have him not making it past the deadline. But IMO this is just a stupid knee jerk reaction to a few losses by a shitty beat writer.
I'll admit I didn't read Garrioch's article yet but he has been saying the Rangers are looking at Boyle for the past how many years? Before it was the connection with Torts. I wonder what his reasoning is now. I know he can say if it happens he was first with it but at some point he may need to move onto a new target.
As for trading Girardi, I'm against it. Yes he's looked horrible. But honestly McDonagh and Staal haven't looked any better so unless you're contemplating trading one of them as well, not sure why you would look to trade Dan. (And yes I know his contract is up this summer. Staal's is up next summer and I think most fans feel there's more of a chance Girardi wants to stay than Staal so that reasoning means nothing to me.)
A 37-yr-old D-man with 4 straight seasons of declining offensive numbers and a bloated (albeit a FA at season's end) cap hit?
SIGN ME UP.
still want hamhuis?
As for the video, I didn't even watch the second half the first few times. Forget standing UP for a teammate, at this point I wouldn't expect the Rangers to stand OVER a teammate out of concern! They'd probably all be sitting on the bench watching the Kiss Cam or the Ice Girls...
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) The Rangers were rumored to be interested in Boyle at the trade deadline last year, so I'm sure Garrioch just jumped on that.
And I'm definitely not advocating trading Girardi, but if AV was looking to bring in one of his old dmen, you'd have to assume Torts would be looking for him in return.
Hamuis is 30 with a 4.5 mil cap hit for 2 more years. I'd rather have Bieksa. He's the nasty SOB the team needs on the blue line. If Sather doesn't plan on resigning Girardi then trade him.
@TheWrage Ummm, Hamhuis is 30.
@thenyrblogneill um...sorry mister commentator. That was Luongo's fault. He needs to be more alert than that. That's his MO though; loss of focus.
@thenyrblogneill Still better than Del Zotto. lol
@johnnyb3910 Well, it is the Ice Girls after all. Can you really blame em'?
@FREE MASHINTER I know you weren't advocating it but even mentioning it will cause some of this fan base to say "yes trade him, he's horrible!" Reasoning makes sense though. I just never like when teams make trades like that. It didn't work last year when player/coach were together, why do teams think it will work now just because they're on the other side of the country?
@TheWrage And his offense has increased the last three years.
@TheWrage He's also a combined +63 the last three years under AV.
