J.T. Miller has been sent down to the Hartford Wolfpack, according to the American Hockey League transactions page. Miller, 20, had one shot and 2 penalty minutes against the Coyotes; his first game with the Rangers since April 1st.
With Ryan Callahan set to return on Monday a forward was set to be bumped out of the lineup. Management clearly has chosen Miller as the odd man out, and he's better off receiving key minutes in Hartford than as a healthy scratch with the Rangers.
Some will argue that Miller was an undeserving victim and that someone like Taylor Pyatt should have lost his lineup spot, but that was never a realistic option. It is a bit surprising - though not necessarily wrong - that Fast was not demoted instead.
We probably have not seen the last of Miller, though, and some time in Hartford will be good for his development. He'll be used in all situations and will have a chance to play with some very talented players such as Kristo and Lindberg.

I think it is pretty simple. Miller was playing for Cally and Fast is playing for Hags. They have similar styles to the guys they are replacing. I think it will be hard for Fast to stick once Hags is ready. For those of us screaming for Pyatt to be the guy sent packing, I don't think it was ever even a consideration. To get rid of Pyatt we will need someone of similar size and board presence. Wish we still had Clowe...
Should've dumped Richards. He may be in shape but mentally he's a lost cause. Now we have no wiggle room and if the organization thinks that sending Miller down while players like Pyatt gets minutes were all in for a long, very disappointing season.
Probably kept fast over Miller for his speed since Hags is out, though if he's going to sit in the pressbox what difference does it make
I wouldn't surprised if a move (trade) is coming with one of our defenseman going for a forward who would add needed size. Can't have Nash getting into fights. Team needs a presence for other teams to think about.
Pathetic , with new regime you think they would have a different mindset. They've mishandled Kreider since he came up and now they are screwing with Miller while Pyatt is literally as useful as a poopy flavored lollypop. I want to puke
Miller, Fast, Boyle, Pyatt...what's the difference, none of them (maybe not even all of them combined) are better than Cally. Miller and Fast probably benefit the most from playing top minutes in Hartford. Same with Kreider. I'm pretty sure that Hartford is not going to play a different system than the big club, that would make no sense. Give the kids some room to grow in the system and gain some confidence and they'll be back up in due time. The news here should be that CALLY'S BACK!!!!!
What have Boyle and Richards done? Kreider has a ton more upside we just don't know what he can do. We know what the other 2 cant do and that's skate
Why do people think we can't win without Kreider, or that he deserves to play on the 1st line? What has he done since the 2012 playoffs to prove he's ready for that?
Replace the name Boyle with miller and I'll be ok. Kreider needs to be up ASAP playing with Nash. Kreider and miller should be on this team over at least 4-5 guys
AV has a long time relationship with Pyatt, so that's probably one of the reasons he's not gone. I think we are going to see a very different team by the end of November. It wouldn't surprise me to see three or four guys up here that are currently in Hartford. Assuming of course, that they play well enough in Hartford.
OMG!? How do go from being the center on the #1 PP unit one day to playing for the WolfPack the next?! LMAO! Ok, let the eyebrows raising commence?! <smh>
I agree 100% with all of you! This is ridiculous! What better time to get miller & Kreider NHL ready than now when whole system being re-vamped and everyone getting acclimated at same time? Miller has talent, skill and is fearless! there are vets on the team that aren't playing as well...Helloooo??? wth?
@TheNYRBlog The AHL transaction page should read Taylor Pyatt has been assigned to the Hartford WolfPack .
First, really not getting Miller and Fast out of the lineup after one game, while Pyatt is still in.... Guess the kids never really had a chance like he said.
" The Anaheim #Ducks are on the hunt for a defenseman and have been in talks with the #Penguins, #Leafs & #Flyers among others. It's believed that Anaheim may part with a young forward in order to acquire help on the back end. Among names the Ducks have interest in are the Penguins' Matt Niskanen, Philadelphia's Andrej Meszaros & Toronto's John-Michael Liles."
DZ for Silfverberg?
If that was based off of just the 1st game you might as well send the whole team down other than Staal and Henrik.
Aside from stating the obvious ie Richards insane contract and what will most likely be his last season here due to his continued decline is the fact that Miller has been playing well and looks really good out there. Why send a young talent back down before someone like Pyatt when he's about to hit his stride??! Makes absolutely no sense this move
@Wallace1 No joke.there is good depth on the Wolfpack now for sure.
@trueblue47 absolutely, his size and aggressive play is
@jslnyr1102 As much as I would like to believe this I don't see any trades anytime soon.
@Adam J. Bernstein He's got 1st line abilities but has never had the development. Grooming him for that in Hartford makes sense. Trading him at this point does not.
@rangersfan Not sure if it's panic yet, but this move is puzzling to me.
@Free Lindberg Can I have some of what you're smoking? You honestly believe Anaheim will give us Silfverberg for MDZ? Then again, with Sather, you never know.
@Iron Mike Agreed re: Richards contract, but I still think we all may be pleasantly surprised by Richards contribution from the wing. It was only one game, but Pheonix was a good start. Let's face it though, they didn't dump Richards because Sather was covering his ass for yet ANOTHER horrible decision. He and Dolar have ruined this team for long enough.
@KevinDeLury @rangersfan Kevin here's a thought. These moves are about who is tradeable.....who has market value. The Rangers now are showcasing those they want to trade in the hope that some team will:
1) demonstrate interest in any of the above
2) and also be willing to part with some grit
3) and have it all fit under "the cap."
So much of what any team does strategically, now includes the cap and getting better defensively. It is important for all of us to appreciate the absolute value all GMs' place on defense. So much of what is said publicly by each team (especially in American cities) is a total crock of non-sense.
You get a far clearer picture of what is going on from Canadian analysts. No matter what game I watch the comments from Canadian analysts run 80% the lack of defense.
