According to Pat Leonard at the Daily News, the Rangers spent a long, long time with their locker room door closed after last night's blowout loss to the Sharks.
Leonard added that Glen Sather was present for the meeting.
...while I love the idea of a closed door meeting after an embarrassing display of hockey, I wish they didn't need to do it just THREE games into the season. While I have no idea how Cally is in the locker room, I can only hope he was getting in the face of a couple of his teammates.
...my only hope is that the 9-2 shellacking was a wake-up call for this team and they use it as motivation going forward.
...and I tell you what, if the guys on the current roster continue with this lackluster performance, there's plenty of young hungry talent in the AHL who would be more than willing to do the job.
And the players may have lucked out today as NHL rules dictate that the team have a mandatory day off because of their recent schedule of three games in four nights.
Vigneault indicated that if he had a choice, he would throw his team right back on the practice ice.
Here's AV post game last night...
Stuart suspended 3 games
Somebody still should have gone after him earlier...
Here is the bottom line -- the Rangers are a business, why should ownership/management care about what this team does or how it performs for the fans when they sellout the games regardless. This is not St. Louis or San Jose where the "quality" of the team fills seats, this is NY, where even if it's a shit product the seats will be filled and they can keep increasing prices year-over-year. Why should ownership care that the team got embarrassed 9-2, the whole season is already sold out and the only sound they hear is the cash register ringing. Dolan is having the last laugh - even if he can't name one line on the team!
Just saw this in Brooks' article:
You know what it was like? It was like the 9-1 loss in Ottawa on Feb. 24, 2004 — that’s right, 2004 — in Jaromir Jagr’s first game as a Ranger, after which Bobby Holik said, “I think, fundamentally, we are the worst team in the National Hockey League.”
Man that was a great game... I remember it well.. I think that was still better than last night
The players looked like they just didnt want to be out there anymore after the third goal was scored. It was like 20 pylons, Richards and zucc on the ice. They gotta get their shit together, hopefully this serves as a wake up call and they come out a better team
They can have all the closed door meetings they want. Even if they decided to try and match what is out there they are a bottom ten team in terms of size, speed and toughness. Watch them when they hit...it's just silly. I applaud the effort, but half the time they fall down after hitting the other guy. They bounce off. That is not the way it is supposed to work. LOL I say it too much, I know, but they need more big, fast guys who just get there first and get there in a bad mood. They are truly the metrosexuals of the metropolitan division. Keep Step, Cally, Hags, McD and Moore and have a fire sale. Don't waste time trying to tinker with a fucking Miata in a truck pulling competition. Start assembling a friggin pick-up truck!!! Sather has to go!
Too bad Dylan McIlrath crapped the bed in preseason and isn't NHL ready yet.He would have definitely picked his retaliation effectively against Brad Stuart and sent a big message. At least the Rangers would have had that. Moreover, he probably wouldn't have been worse than the Ranger's defence that game.
How ironic is that Stefan gets hit and Nash steps in and drops the gloves and the next night Nash gets hit and nobodys does Sh!t about it??
Anyone hear about Nash's status? Or if anyone's been called up yet? I guess with concussions it's hard to say at first. It didn't look like much. I hope he's OK and doesn't wind up with a glass skull. Not good if he was concussed so easily, if that's what it is. Not good at all
Just to make everyones day that much better... Lets look back to what could have been yet again.
Del Zotto for Stamkos... no draft picks... no extra pieces... straight up. You think the Mac deal was great. This would have been the kind of deal where the lightning would have had to leave Florida and play in a different state...
The Rangers right now are a bunch of gutless, spineless pukes!....Vaignault should have sent Dorsett to attack Brad Stuart immediately...WOW...Whats up with that?
I feel when all is settled with the Team's routine and getting used to the new coaches, we will be fine. Being a Ranger fan tests your faith to the max. That's why we are the best fans.
I am writing to the NYR head office asking for a refund. I paid good money to watch 2 teams and only 1 showed up.
Kevin, isn't it better to have a closed-door/come-to-Jesus meeting sooner rather than later? I'd rather have it right damn now while the embarrassment is still nice and hot. If they wait, it's like a parent grounding a kid next week for something he did this week.
"...and I tell you what, if the guys on the current roster continue with this lackluster performance, there's plenty of young hungry talent in the AHL who would be more than willing to do the job."
Isn't this the problem with the organization? Every other team seems to have these exciting rookies or young players who become the future of the team. We seem to have defensemen who fit this bill, but where are all the forwards? Either the coaches are not giving them a chance to play and prove themselves at the NHL level or the GM is doing a piss poor job of drafting. It has to be one or the other. I have no idea if Kreider will ever be good, but if they continue to handle him the way they have he will never be good. Play the young guys and see if they are good enough to stick. If they aren't, get rid of them to open up slots for others.
It was a lackluster and humiliating performance but there is plenty of blame to go around. All the expert pundits on the blog warned that we would have a bumpy start (nobody predicted this, but it is only one game). Are there gaps and players that need to step up absolutely. Are the coaches to blame, maybe in part, but the bottom line is the TEAM didn't execute and regardless of excuses the biggest question now is not who to blame, bench, send down, trade, or buyout - it is seeing how these professional athletes and coaches respond going forward. This road trip although challenging should build chemistry similar to 11/12, but remember we didn't start well that year either. I am sure there will be some subtle tweaks by the coaches but don't expect wholesale changes anytime soon. Let's all hope that Nash is ok and the team steps up and shows up for every game from here on out! LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
Scary that they have a closed door meet just three games into the season after a pathetic preseason. Our problem is personalities as I said last year. I do not know if it is Nash, but it is beginning to look like more than a coincidence. How many coaches did Columbus quit playing on while he was there?
Anybody think it was retaliation for this?
@kingmessier I agree that's the baseline, and you make good points. But if the NYR win and win a lot, they'll sell even more merchandise, increase market share rights, and will increase customers with bandwagoner fans/corporations. So the NYR management does have an interest in being a good team, but do they need to win to survive, as to your point? Not at all.
@hankthetank30 Calling them pylons last night is a compliment, at least pylons are good at their job.
@jmacwilli i would add staal to the keep list
@fs2020 Bring McIlrath up. At least with him you have toughness. I would give up a little D for some grit and heart. We know he will stick up for his teammates. Send Stralman or DZ down to Hartford and bring McIlrath up. I know he is still developing but apparently so is DZ.
@Brukie_ i know. I bet Nash is pissed because of that. I mean, even Gaborik dropped the gloves once (unsuccesfuly but at least he tried), but pussyies Richards and Stepan would never. I feel bad for Nash, he did the right thing the other night, and now no one does it for him.
@Betweentheworlds Nothing yet.
@Free Lindberg Why do that? That was cruel. Grachev for Stamkos and we would be the best team in the league. Or Tortorella would have stripped Stamkos of any offensive ability he had.
@Free Lindberg I just lost my lunch - thanks a lot!!!
@Free Lindberg I think i just died a little...
@jvr I could be wrong, but in all his years in Vancouver, I can't remember ever seeing a player get sent out by AV to respond to a hit or a fight or a cheap shot. He coached the team that would rag-doll every chance they could so they could draw a penalty and hopefully put the sedin's out for PP try. When they bruins got rough they LITERALLY bit them like a bunch of children.
If these players won't be tough on their own, I don't expect AV to ask it of them.
@gravey94 Doesn't matter if the door is open or closed, anyone near the door is going to be able to hear us yelling at each other anyways!
@gravey94 Tonight at 7pm. Be there.
@queensbee like boyle going after stuart last night, right?
@queensbee I applaud them for holding the meeting. I'd just rather they didn't have to this early in the season.
@Dminches allow the young kids to mess up. and learn from it. ive been told though that that situation cant happen because its NYC. maybe so.
@Dminches I agree.
I rather watch kids with talent make mistakes like other teams let them than veterans who serviceable and your happy IF they have a good game.
@JMK8363 We finished the longer road trip back then 3-2-2. That is not terrible. And we certainly did not give up 14 goals in the first three games and lose all but one preseason game. This is far worse.
@DPSnotty hmm. maybe not. that wasnt so bad. yeah, nash left his feet but it was nash's shoulder into the middle of his back. who knows though?
@tygalpin either that or they will hear us getting the torches and pitchforks ready... or they will hear both LOL.
@DaveFL @Dminches If you guys are talking about San Jose... Let me explain something to you. Every organization has kids with talent, people may not like him, but Kreider can produce just like that kid on San Jose last night when he is playing with the right players (remember that kid is on the first line with one of the best passers in the game - Joe Thorton).
The problem isn't the kids who I agree should be up here and given a chance to shine over guys like Asham and Pyatt who have no business on the team. It is the veterans around them... I know a lot of you guys out there like zuccs and I even like Pouliot, Stepan, Brassard, Richards and Girardi are the examples I am going to use.
Zuccarello, on a good team is not on the team... I am sorry but 0 percent chance he makes the roster of the Pens, Hawks, Bruins, Sharks or Kings. Undersized and cant score is not a solid player...
Pouliot is the definition of lazy but talented... it is the reason why Boston got rid of him... he has potential, but should not be on a second line on a solid team
Then we get to guys like Stepan and Brassard... In my opinion both are overvalued for the Rangers. I think Brassard is a third line center... that is where he thrives.. Playing against third line talent and ceating opportunities. Then, I would argue Stepan is a second line center... He does not have the natural talent or spark to be a first line center (Crosby, Bergeron. Towes, Thorton, Kopitar, Tavares - these are all first line centers)
Brad Richards... enough said just a true disappointment. He is making as much or close to what Thorton is and at 37, Thorton is 5 times the player...
Dan Girardi... in my mind the most overvalued player on the NYR roster. He has limited to no offensive upside, and is very weak in terms of d-zone coverage. He relies on playing with a superstar, Mac or Staal, and when he doesn't he puts up a -5 night. Obviously I think DZ is bad, but I think people are way to up on Girardi who's best talent is blocking shots.
The veterans on this team are not good, that is the difference... when you have good veterans kids can come in and thrive, like that kid on San Jose last night. I dont just blame these players I blame Sather for putting this roster together.
@JoeNYR in a bottle LOL. that 4th goal video by hertl has gone viral. its probably been seen on the international space station.
One would have wonder what Sather was thinking when he said he wanted to play like the Blackhawks.
As for wanting a San Jose type team. I would think there have to be some changes in thinking and personal in the organization.
@Free Lindberg @DaveFL @Dminches Lot of really good points in there. I think we were talking about who would struggle under AV and Girardi was a name we agreed on. He should probably sign whatever Vancouver will offer him this offseason, bc he needs to be in a system like Torts.
And I think at the end of the day, you nailed why Richards will get bought out next summer, even if he has a bounce back season and keeps up this 82-goal pace: He's not our #1 center, but we've got 2 4th line centers in Boyle and Moore, so everyone is playing up a line, and he's on the wing.
And I'd put Carl Hagelin in a similar category as Zucc. I love his attitude and his style, and his never quit mentality, but if he can't finish he can't last. I said at the end of last year, I had no idea what they were thinking keeping Hags and Zucc, theyre the same player. Hags needs to show that he can add some finish to his game when he gets off of LTIR.
wow- you said a mouthful, and I agree with almost all of it. Very Brave of you to have posted it - I've been torched for expressing a whole lot less
