For the second time in two days, the Rangers are rumored to be actively looking to make a trade as Elliotte Friedman at Hockey Night in Canada reports that the Blueshirts are one of three teams "doing the most exploring."
...with it becoming more and more apparent that Nash (concussion) isn't going to be returning anytime soon, I have to assume Sather is looking for some scoring depth. The only two teams that I've heard are willing to dump salary are the Sabres and Panthers. And after perusing those rosters, there are two guys on the Panthers I'd absolutely be interested in if I was the Rangers. The first is Kris Versteeg. The 27-year old Versteeg is a proven point getter as he has 209 points (92g, 117a) in 340 NHL games. He also has 37 points (14g, 23a) in 57 playoffs games, including 6g, 8a for the Blackhawks when they won the Stanley Cup back in 2010. Versteeg, who missed virtually all of last season due to knee surgery, does come with a heavy price tag of $4.4M per till 2016.
...the other player is Brad Boyes. A former 40-goal scorer, who had a bit of a renaissance with the Islanders last season, Boyes, 31, signed a one-year, $1M contract with the Panthers this offseason and has 4g, 2a in nine games this year.
...i mentioned this on Sunday, but the only guy on the Sabres (Rangers scouts attended their last game) I would be interested in is Ott. He has that agitating style that could really energize this team. But that's more of a complementary move.
...i can't imagine it would cost more than a late round pick for any of these guys and maybe Sather can get a desperate Panthers GM Dale Tallon to pick up a portion of Versteeg's salary just to get most of his cap hit off the books.
...having said all that. I really don't think now is the time to make a panic move. I'd give this team at least two more weeks before I'm even thinking about making a trade.
Trade Lundqvist while we can. He will bolt for free agency after this year. That's a lock. Don't blame him but he isn't the best playoff goalie. Too many softies. Sorry to loyal fans who don't realize a change is needed. No cups in future with these guys. Except Callahan.
All fair points Alexander Festa. I was just trying to pick out players who make sense on the ice as well as cap wise.
You can keep those two, as they both need tons of support to be successful. And that's not going to happen here.Ott, on the other hand, would actually be the catalyst for some agitation, whether the other Rangers wanted it or not. Has there been a scrum in front of the net all year? Oh yeah, if there was one, it involved Falk, Zuccs, or Dorsett, or "The Guys We Need to Waive."
Kevin, I'm sorry—usually I agree with you, but Kris Versteeg is one of the most injury prone players in the league with zero ability to back-check & Brad Boyes hasn't been an effective goal scorer in a long, long time. He needs to be used as a playmaking RW for a scoring center. I'd sooner see the Rangers pick up a puck mover like Dmitry Kulikov or versatile forward like Marcel Goc from the Panthers—or maybe the hat trick guy, Drew Stafford, from the Sabres.
Can Sather trade himself? Dolan? Because at this point some other teams are considering trading for me as a fan. I don't know what fan they would get to take my place willing to come back and root for the Rangers - probably some blind and deaf guy whose family takes him out because he likes the smell of desperation and frustration. The Garden would be perfect for him.
Can we still trade Nash while he has some worth? These concussions are nothing to laugh about and may end up really costing us. If there is anyone that still likes that trade, then they obviously have not looked at the contract and how much it will count against the cap down the road.
I will become a fucking Sens or Habs fan (where the owners seem to care) if Sather trades anyone unless the return is younger and cheaper. At this point I have given up on him getting a return of better, faster, bigger, tougher, etc... so at least with just younger and cheaper he will not kill ANOTHER 3-4 years. He is such a useless POS and Dolan has zero ability to manage a business - as most don't who are born into money. What a fucking mess. I can't believe that a team in NEW YORK is this fucking bad for this fucking long. Pathetic.
Dont trade for anybody...cut half the roster, bring up the kids-Id rather watch the Rangers not make the playoffs with the kids than a disinterested group of veterans
As long as none of the young guys are on the table then I'm good with some peripheral moves. It is not time to panic and throw away the future for a concussion prone hard nosed player who will only play a handful of games for us (oops - sorry - was flashing back to Clowe... :P). Understand that without Nash and Cally we are hurting big time but I'd rather the young guys get a chance while the vets heal and see what we have down there. At least we'd get to see some energy and enthusiasm. Might even steal some wins. Right now it is hard to believe we will get value if we are trying to find a top 6 forward. I would expect that we would have to give up a lot.
I know that a good team isnt going to trade for quality players, but lets think about this, didnt we get ourselves into this mess by trading for all of a horrible colombus blue jackets team? now they want to go and trade for a so-so florida team's player and a horrible buffalo team's player?
3&4 lines need depth with speed, youth and energy and the ability to score once in a while. Should have been addressed in the off season. Lines 1&2 will be fine when cally and Nash come back but the 3&4 lines have to support them by putting scoring pressure in the other team
Rumor of a trade? We have 4 points and have let up 90 goals and scored 6...look at the pre season and the second round of last year's playoffs too. Not too many wins or goals. Trade should be the only thing we are exploring
Trade Pyatt and Boyle for an old pair of Danny Gare's skate laces. They'd probably have a better chance of putting a puck in the net.
Steve Ott? Blech. Enough with these stupid "energy" guys who can't skate. I'm over that sort of garbage. I would, however, take Versteeg in a heartbeat; I've wanted him on the Ranger roster for a while.
The personnel is only part of the problem. The team is less than the sum of is parts. When that's the case, the blame lies with the coaches. You keep saying give AV a chance, and yet your willing to start shipping out personnel when it's not their fault. And Sather is at the helm of this mess.
Slather is trying to hide his mistakes (again) with more potential mistakes, this is brutal, he needs to go, wish there was a way to fire the owner...
Florida? Sure, how about MDZ for Huberdeau straight up? God, some of these "trade proposals" are starting to sound like WFAN callers! "Hey Kevin, how ya doin' long time reader first time poster. How bout we dump Pyatt and Boyle to Tampa for Stamkos. I'll stop writing now and read your response."
Shouldn't GMs always be exploring trade proposals? Versteeg and Ott are like complimentary pieces so I wouldn't be shocked to see something around them, but getting a star player in here would take a boatload and I would doubt Sather is ready to do that at this point. Honestly, if they feel they can't get Hank signed by the end of the year AND they're very low in the standings, it wouldn't surprise me to see a re-build, especially with all the contracts expiring at the end of the year. But we are WAY off from that point. A move for a big time player now, that's not a steal of a trade, would be a panic move.
I would love to swing both versteeg and ott. the team would automatically become a whole lot deeper.
That 2 weeks is 8 games. What if they go 2-6 in those 8 and find themselves in a deeper hole. Even with all the players on this team healthy. They didn't seem like a power house team offensively. I think if they can bring in a gritty winger that will battle all the time on every shift for a draft pick. Just do it. Pyatt can go. Zuc has done nothing. If not, then demote these players to Hartford (if they don't get claimed on waivers) and bring back some of the kids that have played so well in the AHL. Pouliot has done little but he has speed to burn and has made place causing scoring chances. It's a matter of time before he breaks out and gets red hot. Right now this team is getting nothing from Stepan or Brassard. With the injuries they have to be the top players. No more of this 75% crap. Get er done boys. Let's go.
I also think life isn't so bad without DZ in the lineup. We can live with Falk. Send DZ packing. He's going to want more money this summer. No thanks. J Moore out plays him every shift.
We also kinda need to to start getting some goaltenders into the rangers system. Actually it seems like the well is beginning to dry up. After we call up kristo and all these guys where do we go from there. Dolan and slats have really made a mess of things and were back where we started in 97 with the a list free agents. I know how early into this season we are but we flat out suck.
I mean, there are always some nice players out there but what prospects is Slats planning on giving up? At the end of the day that's really what's gonna make a deal like this happen with a team that's deciding to punt the season. For everyone that wants to trade Del Zotto - we have no one who comes close to being capable of playing regular minutes on D after that top 6 (not Falk, not McIlrath, not Allen, not Aaron Johnson) unless someone wants to see if Steve Eminger wants to come back from Russia. Also remember, the kid's had some great moments in his career. This is a real young season and trading him when is value is at its lowest isn't the best business.
As far as Ott (who's snarl this team could use) I imagine Pyatt/Zuccarello/Pouliots contract(s) would be unloaded but they'd have to give up a nice pick along with whoever they send.
@JustinRP37 that may be a very realistic option, especially if the plan is to still buyout Richards
@jmacwilli Sens have one of the worst owners in the league. Dont become a bandwagoner
@jvr LIke your thinking.
@GetTheKingACup Nailed it, man! St. Louis is a powerhouse and now Columbus isn't that far behind.
@GetTheKingACup He was interested actually, but the opportunity was never given to him.
@rangersfan Well, in the end, it's the players fault. If they can't execute, there is nothing a coach can do in the end. It is up to the personnel, and if it's not the correct personnel, then the fault is within Sather (which IMHO it is... he has not fielded a strong team since he took over the NYR - with the exception of the overachieving 2011-2012 team.
@WOBOcomeBACK How about we get Dubi, Artie, and Gabby back for Dorsett, Brass, Nash, and DelZotto. (just erase the old trades, but keep J. Moore) heh. Like using a time machine to correct our past mistakes and make them better. Somehow I don't think JD/Kekaleinen would be into that though.
@WOBOcomeBACK How about for Nash?
@gravey94 I agree. With all the upcoming RFA/UFAs next year, I can see the NYR rebuilding sooner than later.
@Centerman21 That's a fair point.
@jshyer his inconsistencies are the back breaker tho, MDZ that is. Someone mentioned getting Byfuglien but a high pick or descent prospect will be needed to spice up the deal. Plus Byfugliens salary is double MDZ so maybe Pyatt or Boyle could be added
@jshyer The guys I mentioned above could be had for late round picks. But you bring up a great point.
I don't agree. There are many instances in which teams were underperforming and responded dramatically to a coaching change. A few years ago in St. Louis the team was floundering then tore it up under Hitchcock. Sometimes, the coach is absolutely at fault, particularly in hockey (baseball not so much). When the entire team is underperforming as dramatically as the Rangers are, then the coach is the one who should go. Give him a few more weeks? ok. And yes, Sather is ultimately responsible for the whole mess, so I agree with you there. You should change your moniker to shoot_the_GM.
@rangersfan i dont believe the dolans care about winning championships otherwise they would have fired sather after 5 seasons of mediocrity.
@rangersfan "You should change your moniker to shoot_the_GM."
