The New York Rangers (5-7-0) defeated the Buffalo Sabres (2-12-1) by the score of 2-0, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...if the Rangers could actually finish, this game would have been a blowout. But I'm not going to complain, because that's as dominant a 2-0 win as you're going to see. Coming around Rangers fans.
...so can we stop all this Talbot is making Lundqvist expendable talk now?
...remember how good we all thought Kreider was in the 2012 playoffs. That guy sucks compared to what we're watching right now. So much more of a complete player as he's responsible defensively and has much better puck awareness. And that speed? Lethal.
...maybe Arniel isn't holding Brassard back.
...although he isn't scoring, JT Miller's development is almost as fun to watch as Kreider's. Nothing better than seeing him parked in front of the net screening Miller on Brassard's goal.
...and that's exactly why I have a man crush on Mashinter. Gives the team a nice boost of energy with a fight and they were off and running. Too bad AV only played him four minutes.
...there's the Marc Staal I remember as he looked much more confident handling the puck tonight.
...i need to check the stats, but I think the Rangers have more power play goals in 12 games than they did in the five years under Torts.
...while the Sabres offense is embarrassingly bad, the Rangers defense is a far cry from the swiss cheese unit we witnessed on the west coast.
...you always wonder if a healthy scratch actually motivates a player. In the case of Zuccarello, it does as he's been a different player since watching the Flyers game from the press box. Loving that little eff'er.
...Stepan couldn't score in a whore house right now.
...Girardi played the fewest minutes of any defensemen tonight. I know he's been struggling, but wow.
...btw. what's up with the Rangers new locker room victory song? Do they think they're the Charlestown Chiefs or something?...
...Rangers are off tomorrow then the Hurricanes are in town Saturday night.
Post game reaction...
Regarding the Powerplay. To put this stat in perspective. Last year's PP was on pace to get 41 PP goals if the season was a full one. In 2012, the team got 44 PP goals. This year's team is on pace to get 55! That would have been good for the 7th highest total in the last full season! Is Mike Sulivan far enough away in Vancouver?
Yes, we've beaten some mediocre and bad teams, but you can see how AV's system is starting to click. Speedy guys, carrying the puck, setup man up high between the circle area, and D collapsing in. Speedy guys draw defenders, opening up lanes and men to be able to shoot the puck when the speed guys drop the puck back. (Kreider is doing this a lot) It's only time before this will start clicking with other lines, but NYR need at least one speed guy on each line, even better with two. (see Kreider & Zucc - and why Step is getting numerous glorious scoring chances)
The one guy I would like to see with speed guys is Boyle. Boyle has a really good shot, and the year he scored 20 was when he was parking himself between the circles and firing away. After that season, he started becoming a behind the net forechecker (maybe because of Torts), and stopped putting the puck in the net. Of many players, I can see AV's style really benefiting Boyle.
And yes...time to trade DZ.
Still think we need a sniper. Kristo has to be the man. Drop Pyatt and keep Mashinter in the lineup. I think Nash is gone for a long while. Don't you love having a man in front instead of 3 guys circling behind the net?
Again Miller and Kreider get the help they need and even Pyatt only fell down a couple of times. The Rangers should consider keepingZuccarello's mom in town the rest of season.
Seriously they a need strong, stay at home right handed d-man in this line up. MDZ is scary.
On another note the way the Sabres season is going and with a no name team I had to respect the push they gave in the 3rd, I don't know if the Rangers were tired, surprised or not use to playing so well and still as always Ott is prick, I don't know what he did to Girardi but he was mad.
SO many good things about this game, only negative is it should've been like 8-0. And Del Zotto, I really can't defend him anymore, he infuriates me.
Also, that goal by Kreider is a microism of how he's feeling right now. That's a confident goal to score. I'm so happy for the kid.
So many positives, there is no question---but Michael Del Zotto is still horrendous, and pairing him with Moore makes it worse. That play he tried making at his own blue line in the game last night (which Joe commented on) was awful----Del Zotto simply lacks hockey sense.....does not know time and place for what he does...has to change...he is going to cost us games.
I agree, I just get tired of DZ (although somewhat deserving) being the only D guy that takes the lumps...on a side note Mashhinter is awesome lol
It looked like they were on a power play for most of the first two periods! Got to give some credit to Boyle, too. The big guy is using his long reach and big body really good these days. A real test coming next week with Anaheim and Pittsburgh on the schedule. It would be awesome to take those two games. That would really show that the new Rangers have arrived. But for now, I'm loving what's out there.
A 5 1/2 minute post game presser? Like the power play goals, I don't think Torts had that much time all last season combined. Although I don't know if AV should be commenting on paying Hank the big dollars without the contract signed yet...lol
I have to say that in the 40 years I have been watching hockey, I have never seen a player turn his game around the way Kreider has. He was awful for over a year. And the difference isn't defensive awareness or anything subtle like that. It's that he is HITTING people. And not just here and there - everyone in sight. I never thought he could play that big. I was dead wrong. Incredible to see a player flip a switch like that.
Great recap as always, @Kevin DeLury . Consistency in the areas we spoke of yesterday definitely seems to be sticking -- solid D and goal-tending and a dynamic PP.
I Love Maxine Nightingale
... but not as much as this emerging Rangers team. The reward is so much better after suffering through some dismal games early in the season. There's plenty of work to do, but clearly there is efficient communication taking place with the coaching staff.
Kreider is amazing to watch right now. We're seeing something special. I Love when he puts on some offensive pressure and then when they try to break out Kreider stops them, the man and/or the puck, as they enter the neutral zone. He's too big and strong to be pushed around and he's faster than almost everybody. There's a good chance he's played his last game in Hartford.
Best of all, this was a team effort and most of the guys did their part and contributed
LET'S GO RANGERS !!!
Pretty good game. They seemed to take their feet completely off the gas in the third but a great 1 and a half periods. I can't wait till Cally returns and Pyatt finds himself the odd man out. Should make for a better offensive team at that point.
Also, you should've said...."Stepan couldn't score in a whorehouse with a pocket full of hundreds." :)
I don't think yesterday was lack of finishing ability(other than the Hags breakaway, that was bad). I'm willing to give Miller credit for playing a great game.
by the Staal you remember isthat the one who gave it awya twice for two glorious chances? but DZ is the whipping boy
Like I said (ok, tweeted) last night: if they play for Lundqvist the way they played for Talbot in LI, we will bring it all home.
Zuccarello is playing really well.Really a playmaker, and good passer.Hopefully he can finish. Krieder is doing everything well, keeping it simple and using his speed and size. Stepan is going to start finishing-his reactions are too quick not too-just a matter of time. Hagelin is knocking the other team back on their heels as usual.JT Miller and Brassard are starting to gel-Brassard is finding his game and JT is improving. The whole team is starting to grasp and get used to the new system-which is about right for 10-15 games into the regular season.Starting to look good. There are still some players who are needing improvement and we're far from out of the woods yet, but we can see daylight.
Superstition time - I now have to leave my Halloween wallpapers up on my work monitors until they lose a game...
Next three games are crucial... especially the Hurricanes game. Because our division is trash right now we are only one point out of second place! A good week at home could make that awful 9 game road trip a distant memory all ready.
O and for the love of god.... TRADE DEL ZASTER...
I didn't realize that Kreider had banked that off Miller. I hope he keep this up...I picked him up for my fantasy team after watching the first two periods of the Detroit film. He might not be able to be stopped right now (hopefully).
But this power play. I like that shit.
tonight was a reminder for all the lundqvist doubters, say what you will about us out playing them. its ties game in the 3rd without him and thats the worst team in the nhl.
I think those stats are wrong for Girardi. They had him at 16 minutes when game ended, now it's 18-something. If you look at the play-by-play of first period, you can see whoever was keeping stats had no idea what they were doing lol. Also, I think he got the hat. If so, no way he did it by playing the least amount of minutes in years lol
It also didn't help that Miller was actually as good and he should be. Miller made some great saves tonight.
@PenaltySh0t DZ for Steve Ott and a draft pick. Time to bring up Allen.
@IMPRISON SATHER Agreed. Last year, a friend of mine who knows Adam Graves asked him what is holding Kreider back -- and Gravey said that he had to learn to use his body and hit people. Well, looks like he's learning!
He can be pretty frustrating to watch, huh?
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) 18 something is still the least amount of any defensemen.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) yeah, during the 1st intermission they said derek stepan had played just under 11 minutes? i thought no fn way
@eric1940 no other teams took our song so we changed it
@Kevin DeLury Right...I was saying I think they're still wrong (sorry forgot the word still lol). I think he played more than 18 minutes.
@DubiLeetch Oh I missed that one. I just saw John Moore led dmen with over 10 minutes after 1st and said no way that happened lol
