Last night during player introductions one person was noticeably absent....Rick Nash (concussion).
Nash has now missed seven games since taking a blow to the head from the Sharks' Brad Stuart on Oct. 8th.
Nash is currently on injured reserve, but yet to be placed on long-term injured reserve. As I mentioned yesterday, placing Nash on LTIR could give the team some cap relief, however, he'd be ineligible to play for a minimum of 10 games or 24 days. Unless they retroactivate it to Oct 8th, which would make him available by the November 4th game vs. the Ducks at MSG.
...assuming the loud noise and bright lights of the home opener likely kept him away. Which is quite scary. Getting more concerned by the day that Nash might be done for the season. Which would obviously be a huge blow to this Rangers team devoid of any offensive ability right now.
...Sather is going to have to make a decision real soon on whether he's going to need to obtain some offense via a trade to replace Nash before this season spirals out of control.
Here's video of the player intros...
...despite some players needing to be boo'd (cough Del Zotto & Pyatt cough), big props to the MSG crowd for cheering them on instead. There's a few times when you just don't boo your team, one of which is the home opener player intros.
Curious why Hagelin & Mashinter(?) were cracking up when they announced Nash's number and the camera was on them? Did Hagelin think ppl would confuse Mashinter for Nash?
I guess for the average joe seeing a larger guy like Nash take a hit up high while bracing himself should not have had such an impact. Here's the deal.....Nash was hit w/ elbow that looked to land square on his chin. hits to the jaw are the knock out blows as they can cause the brain to be jolted inside the skull causing the concussion. It was a bad hit Nash took in San Jose and I hope this doesnt end his career.
For the sake of Nash as a person I rather him sit out. How long was it between the hit on Lucic in the playoffs until the sharks game, and that minuscule of a hit put him out like this?
I'd rather see him on LTIR even if it only took maybe 6 weeks for him to recoup. Yes I want him back ASAP as a fan but as a person the last thing i'd want is for him to be ruined for the rest of his career and life. Sather needs to start looking at a plan B.
Dont get me wrong . He could just be taking a set period of time to recover and then get evaluated . After all he is a big investment and want to be careful . Look at Staal ? Just sayin .
I dont think he is done but I think we havent seen the real nasty nash yet . He hasnt hit since he got here he looks intimidated by the big lights and big city . Just an observation . Maybe not comfortable with torts system and he played nervous . Cant put my finger on it .
No boos but it was pretty quiet when Pyatt was introduced lol. As for Nash, I had said it yesterday as well: I've had PCS and trust me, he could not be there with the lights, noise and just the people. It's one hell of a condition let me tell you. The only good news if there is any is that whether you have a mild or severe case you are not going to be in the garden opening night so Nash's absence does not necessarily mean he's done for the year. Having said that this is obviously not good news and don't expect him for at least 6 weeks at the absolute minimum.
Other than that it was quite quiet for an opening night at the new garden. Really eerie. Some suggested that the expensive tickets have weeded out the die hards and replaced them with manhattan business types but I'm not so sure that is the only reason - these Manhattan suits can get quite loud. Ever been to a restaurant in mid-town lately??? If you want to get your home town fans into the game do something to get their adrenaline up. throw a crunching body check early on. Hustle. Play hard. Provide some excitement. Your fans can lift you. Come on guys!!! It's not rocket science. When does the captain get back???.
Damn... Really thought they were going to do something cool with that drumline! Next year, kill the music and have the guys just come out to some bad ass drum chorus!
I saw him riding the subway the other day. If he can handle a bouncy and loud Manhattan subway ride, I'm sure being at MSG would not be an issue for him.
I understand that concussions are tricky and each player is affected differently, but that really didn't seem like a season-ender to me. Again, I wasn't the guy that got hit nor am I the one feeling the after effects, but did anyone else see the Kronwall hit where the guy basically used his hip to drive his head into the dasher? The hit was so hard it took Kronwall's helmet off. He was back on the ice in 2 days practicing with the team.
If Nash couldn't put a suit on and wave the crowd from the bench for 10 minutes you have to assume he's in real bad shape. I feel like he's going to be out for the season.
yea his not coming back until Canada needs him not the rangers. why rush back to a team that didn't even start a fight or take out one of the other teams stars after you get hit in the head on a clearly dirty play? where is the heart in this team?
As I said the player responsible for a deliberate head shot should be suspended till injured player returns . Then life time ban for repeat offenders .
You heard cheers? The crowd sucked just like the team last night. No goals, no chants. Could barely hear let's go Rangers twice. Felt like another away game. That's because they have priced out the real fans and all the celebs and corp aholes who wouldn't know a puck of it hit them in the face where there.
What happens if he doesn't recover, last night someone mentioned sauer and how he slowly disappeared. Obviously nash is a little more well known so he won't just disappear but it's looking more and more like a pronger situation and not a Crosby situation. Nash has been a letdown and we let a lot go for a little in return and due to his injuries we have a huge void that can't be filled without once again dumping some core players and draft picks. Really thought he would of been there last night or even did something on the big scoreboard as a message
I thought the same thing about Nash not being there and it breaks my heart - not just because the Rangers need him, but because it would be so incredibly sad for his health and career to be in jeopardy.
Nash is MIA, haven't seen or heard of him in weeks. If he's out for the season this team is done, and we better hope he gets healthy so we can buy him out...
If I recall he missed the subscriber event last season because of the previous concussion (it was rumored he had light sensitivity issues after the Lucic hit). Seems that's just the way he reacts with a concussion while others may have other symptoms. It's concerning, but I am not sure I would really read anything into it...yet. He did recover from the last, this one may just take more time because of the last one being so recent.
Am kinda surprised he hasn't been placed on LTIR yet, but maybe that's just because it's not needed. Is there a time limit for when you can place a player on LTIR retroactively?
I saw on Twitter from someone who was there that Hagelin started waving to the crowd as the announcer started saying "number 61". Hags thought he was going to say 62, forgetting about Nash. Hags jumping the gun prompted the laughter between him and Mashinter.
@BrianAuty Unfortunately, with concussion symptoms, that means little. One day you can be fine, the next, you're in a dark room. That's why you have to be symptom free for a certain amount of time before you can even think about training and skating again.
@BrianAuty Pics ?
@VinnieR Maybe he just wanted to avoid all of the questions and scrutiny...? I'm going with that excuse :-)
@Mark Cupo In theory, I like that idea. But its so complicated cause if you place a rule as such, it can be abused and distorted from it's original purpose.
Someone suggested a hefty fine on top of forfeited salary and game suspension. That solution may be more effective, as long as the NHLPA agreed to it.
@messier home opener where all the suits and celebs keep their tix. they will be gone and show back up in the playoffs, should be better going forward with LGR chants...that is if there is something to LGR about
@shoot_the_goalie I think it is a great idea. It would have to go through the league (e.g. if any kind of suspension is given then that would be a minimum amount of games). I'd max it out at the rest of the season for a career ending injury. I bet people would be real sure to avoid head shots if they stood the chance of missing the rest of the season.
