According to Katie Strang at ESPN.com, Rick Nash returned to the ice today after missing practice on Sunday with a sore foot he received from blocking a shot during the team's last preseason game against the Los Angeles Kings in Las Vegas on Friday.
...good to have him back. Now start practicing shooting the puck, which you did far too infrequently during the preseason.
Meanwhile, Strang also reports that Ryan Callahan, who was cleared for contact last week, wass in a yellow non-contact Tuesday along with Carl Hagelin.
...if Cally was 100% there would be no need for a yellow jersey. This has me a bit concerned that he might be coming back too soon.
Here's the power play units from today without Callahan...
#NYR power play in practice, since Callahan is not ready yet: Staal-Richards, Miller-Stepan-Nash— Pat Leonard (@PLeonardNYDN) October 1, 2013
Other #NYR PP unit is Del Zotto-Girardi, Pouliot-Brassard-Zuccarello— Pat Leonard (@PLeonardNYDN) October 1, 2013
At one point Brassard and Miller switched units.
...nice to see Staal on the first unit. This preseason was the best I've seen him in the offense end, so why not.
Finally, here's Zuccarello attempting and finally succeeding to scoring on Henrik Lundqvist...
Caps look like a tough team. Two things I have seen that really impress me... First their Power Play just keeps getting better, and with our PK they will score every time. Second their size... they have one line (with Laich and Chimera) that is dominating the Hawks. If that line is dominating the Hawks it is going to manhandle our lineup along the boards. Think the Caps could have a very good year (all depends on Holtby, who looks pretty good tonight).
Hockey is officially back... can't wait til Thursday. Best Ranger this year, points-wise, will be Rick Nash... really went out on a limb with this one
@TheNYRBlog it's a tough surgery to have and rehab. All the scenarios I got wen I had surgery said minimum 6 month post op release.
Surprised they actually listed the Rangers at #10...
I don't understand Miller is on the PP but on the 4th line or do the Rangers just have 2 4th lines? i would exclude Fast since he has speed and talent.
A) The PP would look good if Richards was not on it.... and Miller on the first unit over Brassard (come on this is not rocket science AV)!!!
B) Most teams have come out with their lettering... any word from the Rangers or is it just staying the same with Callahan, Staal and "bad knees"
I know he's going to get a lot of minutes at even strength and on the PK, but why no McD on the PP? Maybe its a righty/lefty thing? It seems like AV pays a lot of attention to that.
@TheNYRBlog I'm not scared. In fact, now I feel better because I think this was AV's way of saying he calls the shots, not Cally lol
@TheNYRBlog he was skating as a extra
@cb1 Realistically, I'm afraid you need to take one of those guys out for Pyatt.
@cb1 yikes... and no switch Pyatt in for Asham, but move him up to the 3rd line and Miller down to the 4th
@AG_Blue Most of the "expert" selections I've seen out there predict the Rangers to be 2nd in the division behind the Penguins, and theyre the second team on this list from the division, so I guess that makes sense. But seeing as they're 10th, it seems like most people think the better teams are currently in the west, which is tough to argue against.
Even if the Rangers struggle out of the gates, 2nd in the division should still be attainable. Washington, Carolina, Columbus, NJ should be the bottom 4, the Rangers, Flyers, and Islanders should battle for 2,3, and 4 but the Rangers really should pull ahead of those 2 as the season goes on, and the Penguins should be claer cut #1 unless their goalie troubles start to show up in the Regular Season. But with the way the playoffs are assembled, I think the "wild card" teams will come from the Atlantic, so the Rangers really need to get that #2 spot.
AV likes every line to be a threat. So it's really just a top 6 and bottom 6. The third and 4th lines should be inter changeable and they will both be getting 12-15 minutes. He likes to spread the icetime and not just give guys 3 minutes like torts did... That way come the end of the season the top guys are as fresh as can be
@johnnyb3910 I'd rather see McD on the point w/ Staal then Richards. I'm sick of seeing forwards at the point on the power play. Let McD develop his offensive skills more w/ more ice time and open ice on the power play instead of wasting it on an aging former star.
@BlkNBlueShirts Good point.
@BR19MG10 I hear u. I'm obviously just concerned. Would hate for him to come back too soon.
Thanks a lot for the reply. Just as the Rangers might need some time to put their team game together, I'll need some time to feel the new alignment.
It should be a tight division. The Penguins should be a clear #1 in the division. Hopefully the Rangers take to this fresh start and grab #2, they've got their work cut out, but they have the guys to do it. After that it could be a toss-up, those teams look pretty good. Columbus probably got better, and the caps are pretty good. The fliers and debbies should be the worst but they have a way of sticking around. It'll be a tight division.
I haven't seen any other "expert" reports, but you make a lot more sense to me anyway.
@TheNYRBlog I agree and Cally is that type to rush back. I trust AV though
@cb1 @Free Lindberg & Kreider @johnnyb3910 absolutely... a leader doesnt come to the rink and do what he did every day last year... and surely a leader doesn't dog it for the preseason to show that to the younger kids trying to make the team (and if you say he wasn't dogging it then he wont be on the roster in a month)
