In an interview for YES Network's "CenterStage," Mark Messier discussed being passed over for the Rangers head coach position this past summer (via New York Post)...
“I wasn’t hurt,” Messier said. “I was [more] disappointed, because I really kind of made my mind up that I could do this, and I knew what I was getting [into].
“I’ve been around a long time and I understand the nuances that go on behind the scenes. It gets complicated, but I don’t bear any grudges against the organization.”
Messier added that no bridges have been burned and he plans on being in attendance when the newly renovated Madison Square Garden is unveiled on Friday.
Messier recently accepted a position as a consultant for the Edmonton Oilers.
...Messier better not hold any grudges as he should have been thanking his lucky stars that his relationship with Glen Sather allowed him to even be considered for the position despite have ZERO coaching experience.
...although, with the way the Rangers season has gone with Vigneault, could Messier have done that much worse?
...i'm still baffled by Messier's comments about making up his mind that he could coach. That's all well and good, but if he's so interested in getting behind the bench, shouldn't he be looking to, you know, obtain some head coaching experience instead of working as a consultant?
It was such a crazy idea it might have worked. Unconvenriality in Slats world? yeah right. We'll never know and of course an NHL coach needs some experience no matter but would have given us something to be Intrigued about in this sorry early season. Mess and Gretz have very different personalities and the comparison is poor. If anyone could have pulled it off Mess and his culture of winning could.
Messier ,.Leetch, Graves as coaches would have been welcomed and.if they would have crapped the bed . We would still love those dudes!!
I made up my mind that I could fly a plane because I used to play Flight Navigator on my PC Jr. I'm shocked that none of the major airlines has come calling though?
Could it get worse...yes, we could be Flyers fans.
AV says he has confidence in talbot if he needs to go Thursday... Which most likely he will. Seriously this is the worst possible start to the season for the Rangers... I don't know what else could go wrong. I blame the league not for this 9 game road trip... But the 5 game road trip we also had in the preseason. Why put us on the road for an extra two weeks when we are already going to be traveling for 9 straight games.... Feeling all this traveling has led to more injuries at least a little bit.... Then again it's a weak excuse
You sound like you don't care much for Messier and that surprises me. And for the record ... every coach has their 1st coaching job somewhere. I think Messier and the Rangers had potential magic.
Patrick Roy is doing well with the Avalanche but he also coached after he retired in the minors for a few years. I dont get why Messier doesnt do the same thing. Look how well things worked when his teammate, Gretzky, got the head coach nod in the desert!
I don't think Mess would be 2 and 5. Not hiring Mess might turn into Sather's greatest blunder.... Right now this team needs a serious swift kick in the ass.
Hank's hurt, and not practicing. It can't possibly get any worse than this.... Can it?
Our three best players are now all injured
Good point but bad comparison. No Mess never "flew a plane" but at least he has actually "sat in the cockpit", and not just played with toys
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane They can't play in MSG and it was Sather's idea to go to Banff.
@T4nk581 I'm with you on this Bro.
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane Saying minor issue. Not going to get too crazy just yet.
@Betweentheworlds Actually, sitting in the cockpit would have been an assistant coach or a head coach in the AHL. Messier was head mechanic, to continue with the flying analogy. I love Mess and I give him all the credit in the world as an on ice leader. But it's a whole other ballgame motivating players on ice when you can do so by example and leading/motivating by getting players to buy into your strategy. He's foolish to think he can do so without any coaching experience. But I admire his confidence.
If he's hurt and is out for any time our goalies will be talbot and massiean... Can you say lottery pick.
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane With our luck, we'd be picking last there too.
