Henrik Lundqvist, who will miss his second straight game tonight, told the media today that his undisclosed injury is progressing slowly (via Daily News)...
“It’s a little better. It’s moving slowly in the right direction. Today was the first real practice I had in a week, so we’ll see how I respond … It’s tough to be patient. I’m not gonna hide it. I definitely want to play Monday. I want to be there and play in front of our fans. So that’s our goal, but at the same time you have to be smart about it. It’s a long season, but we’ll see how I react to this. This was a good skate.”
...never like hearing "a little better" and "slowly" when it comes to a Lundqvist injury. I'm starting to worry that he's not going to be ready for Monday's home opener.
In some more potentially bad injury news, Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record notes that when asked about the status of Rick Nash (concussion), Alain Vigneault said he hasn’t even inquired about his super star winger in “four or five days.”
...oof, that's not good news.
...the Rangers better start thinking about Plan B because it doesn't sound like Nash will be back in the line-up anytime soon. And that Plan B better not be Vinny Prospal.
There was also some personnel news at this morning's practice as Mats Zuccarello will be back in the line-up at the expense of Brandon Mashinter.
...WTF?!?!?!?!?!? FIRE AV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here are the lines for tonight...
Chris Kreider-Derek Stepan-Brad Richards
Benoit Pouliot-Derick Brassard-J.T. Miller
Taylor Pyatt-Brian Boyle-Derek Dorsett
Mats Zuccarello-Dominic Moore-Jesper Fast
...i'm not just saying this because of my man crush on Mashinter, but there's no way he should be the one coming out of the line-up. He's a perfect fit for the fourth line. I mean how much better would the bottom six look if a certain forward with mesmerizing blue eyes was sent to the press box instead...
...i'd feel a lot more confident going into the game with that bottom six than what I'm currently looking at.
Vigneault also addressed the struggling center position for the Rangers which had contributed ZERO goals this season...
“We need our centermen to help us out here a little bit,” Vigneault said. “They’re a big part of defensive hockey and offensive hockey, and we’ve got quite a few on that end right now that are underperforming.
“Tonight I’m hoping that Step and Brass, especially those two – they’re supposed to be our offensive players, our offensive skill. They need to start showing some of that.”
...it will be impossible for the Rangers to get out of their current offensive funk without Stepan and Brassard starting to contribute. It's that simple.
Pyatt's play is awful for sure, but the kid isn't 100% right since his the death of his fiancee.
Just my two cents....
I love the little guy as you all know but we need toughness out there tonight - oh wait, Zucc IS one of our toughess guys. A better idea is Mash and Zucc in Sinker out, and Zucc not on the 4th line. What is AV smoking
Why do the Rangers feel the need for such secrecy when it comes to injuries?!?
What do coaches (Torts & AV) see in pylon that nobody else does?!?
When will slats retire?!?
When will we draft a Lucic type of power forward?!?
There has been a more positive update on Loui Eriksson for the Bruins after 2 days than Nash after almost 3 weeks... Considering that was a very weak hit it makes the Nash situation look worse and worse
I can't remember a time when a Rangers team bored me so much. There is literally NOTHING exciting about this team...Mashinter gave me flashes of that excitement, for all of his 4:22 minutes of ice-time, and now even THAT is gone. I think I will take up watching Curling over this year's Rangers.
Won't be watching tonight. Going on date night and don't feel like being depressed. When my wife asked me why I was always so angry at the Rangers, I said it is because we have begun the process of a long breakup. I think it is best for my health if I walk away from this team until Sather gets canned.
I hate to keep talking about that 11-12 team but its true, we moved to many guys. We have 7 forwards playing tonight that werent on that team and dont have any balls close to what we used to have. Were literally the old blue jackets. What a mess
Other brad back can anyone name anything!!! Promising about this season and don't day the chase bridge lol
Time for a dose of reality friends. Nash is likely done... for good. Henrik is not playing because the team stinks, and it is a contract year. I think these two observations are actually pretty clear. It is not all gloom and doom though. No matter how well Richards does this year, he is too expensive for a guy on the wrong side of 30. So, look for lots of cap relief next year with the long term injury exception for Nash, the buy out for Richards, and a late season trade of Henrik, or simply letting him walk. Maybe Cam is the answer, so far in the quick glimpse we have seen of him, the jury is still out. Maybe Hiller, or one of the two quality guys in Toronto will be a more affordable answer. I LOVE what Henrik has done for us, but it may be time to look forward.
Not only have AVs decisions been mind boggling, but I'm starting to think that Sather is running the roster movement... I will officially begin the Kristo movement right now....
Wow that little bit on Nash is pretty scary. If he has the same issue with concussions like Crosby, we are in big big trouble. The hit Nash took didn't seem like the type that would put him out this long.
Plain and simple. If AV cant see he is the worst player in the Leauge then he needs to go as well...bring in Laviolette fir christ sake at least.
Kevin... Mashinter is not helping us against the Wings... but nor is Zucc. I don't even care about any of this stuff... I am legitimately sick about Nash... We may not see him til December and thats being optimistic... To not even inquire about him for 5 days, that is an awful sign. And if he is out the whole season without questions he is bought out, and that leaves us with Richards for the next decade... I am just sick.
O and not to mention since the UFA's this summer are awful... Sather will just spend that 7.8 on some over the hill over rated free agents. This makes me more sick than our 2-6 record and our current level of play
pyatt sucks, amazing that a professional coach cant see that but every other person that knows anything about the rangers can, this guy has made some seriously questionable decisions so far this season and its only been 8 games, at least on Thursday the team had a little more jump and was more fun to watch, now mashinter is out, great, how is it that pouliot and zucc catch so much heat but pyatt hasn't been mentioned by the coach? pyatts gotta go.
@JustinRP37 Sather put together the best team of my life time (born in 1994) and then tore it down after 1 season... at least we know he is capable? I really don't think he will ever be fired, but I can't wait til the day Gorton takes over... Look at the team he helped build in Boston... Remember he drafted Lucic...
@JustinRP37 Very aggravating to watch
@Cally11 then you probably won't be watching many... AV is in love with the guy for reasons no one can understand...
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane forget about nash, he has done nothing as a ranger, nothing. he's one hit away from retirement. we gave up an ever improving core for him so forget him. its time to blow thewhole thing up and start over including the coaches
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane If Nash is out the full season he absolutely not will be bought out. He will be placed on LTIR for as long as needed like the Flyers are doing with Pronger.
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane if he misses the whole season, he would presumably be not medically cleared and won't be eligible for a buyout. silver lining?
@dancz I agree, but everyone just has to give up on the cut Pyatt thing... AV clearly is not going to... which is yet another terrible move by him
Not really. He took a back seat for cancer treatment for awhile. I know he was very hands off for a few years. Now he is back at it again and it sucks.
@sureshore Sure he did, but weren't we saying the same thing two seasons ago. Dubi wasn't contributing much and we were hounding him as to why torts kept playing him.
There's reason to love Dubi. Even when he wasn't soring he did million oher things to help th team, like best PK on the team and sticking up for his mates. And if Torts loved Dubi so much, why did Dubi get traded?
