According to the New York Rangers, Henrik Lundqvist will not play tomorrow against the Flyers because of an undisclosed issue. Cam Talbot will get the start.
Lundqvist will travel with the team to Philadelphia, but will not be the backup as Jason Missaen will be recalled from Hartford.
Here's Alain Vigneault on the issue...
"If this would have been a playoff game, he’d probably be playing. It’s something that’s day-to-day that we think we can nip it in the bud. It might take one more day, maybe two, but it’s something he should be able to turn the page on and you won’t hear about it anymore.”
Vigneault added that the ailment is “something he’s had for, I want to say, maybe 10 days. But it wasn’t anything significant. He played real well in Washington, and it acted up a little bit after the Jersey game.”
...i'm usually the first one to sound the alarm bell around here, but for some reason I'm not worried. He skated the other day, plus Vigneault is saying he would be playing if it was the playoffs. I really think the issue is nothing more than a blister (or something similar) and the long break in between games along with a weak opponent tomorrow night allowed for Lundqvist to rest and heal whatever malady it might be. Now, if Lundqvist misses Saturday's game in Detroit and a few practices next week then it'll be panic city, baby!
...also, if Talbot has a great performance tomorrow night, I wonder if we're going to have ourselves a Canuck's like goaltending situation? lol
It also sounds like Lundqvist isn't the only guy who's going to sit out in Philly as Mats Zuccarello will likely be a healthy scratch after having a long conversation with assistant coach Scott Arniel.
...it's bad enough the Columbus guys don't like Arniel, now AV has him playing bad cop for the other players? lol
...i really don't think AV had much of a choice here. Zucc has really provided nothing so far this season. Reports from practice had Zucc alternating with Pyatt on the third line so I assume the decision came down to those two with Pyatt obviously coming out on top. Have to figure AV's familiarity with Pyatt gave him the edge.
Here were the lines at practice (via Bergen Record)...
Chris Kreider-Derek Stepan-Brad Richards
Benoit Pouliot-Derick Brassard-J.T. Miller
Taylor Pyatt-Brian Boyle-Jesper Fast/Mats Zuccarello
Brandon Mashinter-Dominic Moore-Derek Dorsett
Vigneault also acknowledged Michael Del Zotto will be re-inserted into the line-up after being a healthy scratch in New Jersey. Justin Falk will go back to the press box.
...with Mashinter likely in the line-up, Falk's physical edge isn't as necessary. Plus, like it or not, Del Zotto has the potential to provide some much needed offense.
OMG no Zuch either? So no Cally, Hags, Zuch, Hank, or Nash... Umm that is like our whole team ... WTF
You gotta love some peoples enthusiasm for a minor league hockey lineup....enjoy watching Mashinter tonight, youll never hear of him again after this season
NY media ripped Torts for not giving updates on injured players. Where's the complaining now, when AV is doing the exact same thing
Zuccs has been aswful this year, And so has just about every other Ranger forward, especially Pouliot. When they were playing with Brassard in camp they were the Rangers best line, and AV broke them up after 2.5 games. Wish he'd put them back together just for a game to see what happens. Then if they don't improve, bench both Zuccs and Pouliot. But if they did show some chemistry and scored a goal or two, it would be a big lift for a team that needs it desperately.
Not that anyone has played all that well but Pyatt & Zuc need to take a seat.
I think when Hags is ready, Fasth heads to Hartford to work on his NA game, along with Lindberg.
I think Mats Z maybe needs a change of scenery to find his NHL game. The results & the effort don't seem to match up.
I'd like to see McIrath get more top 4 minutes (15-25 games) in the AHL before he gets called up for a look. Necessity may make that not an option.
No word on the Rangers bringing in any other Goalie retreads (Hedberg, Bryzgalov) so hopefully it's a 3-7 day thing with Hank.
Not the start I expected but the bows not under the water yet.
Zuc said to norwegian tv2 that he was not happy with he´s performance on the ice and he understood if he would be scratched. He said he has to play allot better if he should stay with the rangers.
Wish came truee..except lundqvist injury...Really excited to see talbot work on pure adrenaline tom night
I look at those lines and then look into my crystal ball and see Haley replacing Dorsett, Hagelin replacing Pyatt, Cally replacing Fast/Zucc and Nash replacing Boyle. Then the lines could be:
Hagelin - Stepan - Nash
Kreider - Brassard - Richards
Cally - Miller - Pouliot
Mashinter - Moore - Haley
Let Fast develop in the AHL, Send Zucc to the AHL, Boyle your extra forward and do what you want with Dorsett and Pyatt.
From ESPN: Vigneault confirmed that Lundqvist (2-4-0, 3.45 GAA) has been playing through the injury, which was described as both "nagging" and "irritation", though he downplayed its impact..."It wasn't anything significant," Vigneault said. "He played real well in Washington but it acted up again during the [New] Jersey game."
Blister or something along those lines seems realistic to me. Otherwise it's something between his ears...
For those who think Kreider is lazy and entitled.
From Brad Richards (speaking about Kreider):
“He was pretty uptight in the preseason, understandably. He wanted to make the team more than anybody, I worked out with him all of August up in Connecticut, that’s all he thought about, talked about. I haven’t seen too many guys work that hard away from the rink to get himself ready. He might have pressed a little bit, but he really wants it. Sometimes that can get in your way, get your head in the way and maybe things don’t look as smooth out there as they should. Hopefully, this is a great chance for him to play on the power, he’ll get good minutes, hopefully he can put that in his mind before the game starts that he’s going to get this chance and just play. Maybe that’ll help him.”
Jesus. Please don't let us lose to Philly. Please...... Pretty Please???
WTF. I know it's still early but why do I have this constant, deep down feeling that this team is f*cked. We need a win. We need some positivity!!!
If we're gonna chalk it up and rebuild, play the kids already. #playthekids!! LGR
Super sad about my boy Zucc. I know he's got the skills to succeed in this league, size be damned. Pyatt just occupying the shit out of that roster spot.
I'll just let myself out...
This is nothing more than damage control. Henrik has been terrible along with the rest of the team this year but he's the franchise player so here come the excuses. He's just had a sh*t start plain and simple and they want to sit him without embarrassing him. Biron was bad too but his treatment by management makes no sense. I think there was something personal there that we don't know about. Didn't he have trouble in preseason with personal issues?
Anyway - Let the kids play! (it can't be any worse)
If we had know about Hank's issue, then why the f**k would we put Biron on waivers and force him into retirement? Could they not have done that after? I mean 8 days?! I am excited to start Talbot, but we should have a veteran backup ready to go if needed. This team is run like absolute garbage. But keep saying the Flyers are terrible, we said the same thing about the Devils, whoops. We currently need to view every game as big. The standings are starting to heat up.
@cardboardcllctr Don't think the media ripped Torts on not giving updates. They ripped Torts on how he did (or more accurately didn't) give the info.
@sportsjourn At least Zuc is honest, and that's pretty refreshing. He was pretty honest when he said he would only come back to the NYR if coming back to the NHL, and that he was willing to take a discount, which he did. Problem is we haven't had shootouts, where frankly, Zuc is at his most valuable.
@TruBluEsp I have to agree with you but for this:
Kreider - Richards - Cally
Miller - Brassard - Pouliot
Personally, I think you try to find that preseason chemistry between to French-Canadians again on the third. While Miller is a natural center, I think his play as the third line winger gives that line much needed Jam (how I miss my Tortsisms) and strength on the forecheck. Let Brass and Pouliot tic tac toe around with Miller beasting his way around the net and in the corners. Same for the second line... it's too soft the way you work it out. Let Cally do the dirty work while Richards sees the ice, and Kreider.. lets hope he finds his shot ala Gabby because I'm still not convinced he's a power forward. I think he could snipe some nice feeds from Richards with Cally there to deflect. More balance to the lines there too.
@TruBluEsp I wish we could get Kreider - Brass - Nash (when healthy) Those guys looked pretty good together against BOS in last year's playoff series.
@TruBluEsp I hate to say it, but those lines look solid. I don't know where to but Zucc in there. I WANT to put Zucc in there, but HOW?!
Although on twitter, Hank is referencing "Treatment and excercise" are making it better. Who knows...
@shoot_the_goalie Someone here posted that they saw The Kreider doing crunches in the hallway after a game in CT. Beast mode.
@shoot_the_goalie Good stuff. I feel an article coming on based around this quote for tomorrow morning!
@shoot_the_goalie Awesome quote, good find. His career started out so well, you have to think he's got high expectations for himself, and being young its probably easy for him to be too up or too down. Hopefully AV handles him better than Torts, and hopefully the injuries we're going through will give him the opportunity to play on the top line for 2-3 games, instead of 2-3 shifts, and really get comfortable.
@brian2686 MZA FTW to my grave, dude.
@DaveFL I wish I could like this 500 times
@DaveFL Fast needs to be set free. Forget Lindberg and Mash
@JMK8363 Queen Henrika. (kidding).
@JustinRP37 Because Biron was terrible. Like our chances much better with Talbot.
@dicknashty @TruBluEsp Definitely see your points. I just thought Kreider/Brass/Nash played really well against a solid BOS team. They had speed, talent, and opened up the ice for each other, which is crucial for snipers like Nash & Kreider. Richie used to be able to open up ice for his snipers, but doesn't seem to be at the level anymore, even with his improved play.
@shoot_the_goalie @dicknashty @TruBluEsp I don't disagree with you on the Kreider/Brass/Nash - they did look really good against Boston (though Nash had a hard time against Boston). I was actually responding to your first line combos. With reagrd to making space - I don't think there is really anyone on the team right now capable of making space, which is causing a lot of our troubles offensively.
@JustinRP37 Baptized by fire and ice.
