In a conversation with Dan Rosen at NHL.com, Brian Leetch admits that if the Rangers had chosen Mark Messier over Alain Vigneault for their vacant head coachin position this past summer, he would have joined the coaching staff as an assistant...
"I felt comfortable moving forward with that. I was definitely on board if it happened. Obviously that didn't work out for Mark."
Messier obviously didn't get the job and Leetch ended up accepting a position in the NHL's Department of Player Safety alongside Brendan Shanahan.
..listen, I love Messier and Leecth, but that would have been a disaster. Look at the difficulty a veteran coach like Vigneault has had trying to traverse a less than ideal preseason and beginning of the season schedule. Now imagine that with two coaches with ZERO experience. I don't think it's much of a stretch to say they'd likely be winless right now.
...having said that, it would have been pretty cool to see those two re-united behind the Rangers bench.
H/T to reader Joe K.
How long until Ranger management figures out that the young Rangers they have high hopes for, are nothing more than 3rd and 4th line players; if that...I know, we fall in love with homegrown talent but look HOW FAR BACK WE ARE COMPARED TO THE ELITE TEAMS IN THE NHL
does anyone know how to watch or listen to the wolfpack? i would love to watch the game tonight or find it somehow on internet radio. i listened to it last year on wccc the rock out of hartford, but im not sure if they still carry the games. any suggestions?
If Mess wants to coach in the NHL, have him earn it. I don't care if he was a great captain/player. It's not the same thing and it doesn't give a free pass to anything he wants.
I'm not a fan of Patrick Roy (as a player/person/or coach), but at least the guy earned it by coaching in juniors and minors.
And just cause Mess was a "winner" in his playing days, does not mean he'll be a winner as a coach. Look at Gretzky.
thought messier would make a great coach, time will tell he will the chance somewhere and we will see what happens
And how could you not expect this team to struggle. New coaching staff which means entirely new system. 3 of our top 6 forwards out. And spending nearly the first month on the road. .500 would be phenomenal after 10 games, 3-4 wins not shocking.
What Messier meant to this team as a player is far different than coaching. The Great One was nobody as a head coach. You better prove that you can drive before daddy hands over keys to the Porsche! He's proven nothing in the coaching world. Personally, I'd rather have the guys who paid their dues and been successful than the sentimental pick any day!
I watched in amazement as I stated before i like to focus on Plyon to see any clues to why he is in the NHL get turned around like a pee wee player by Mike Greene at the blue line while on the PK and take a penalty chasing him back to place he should been in the first place. Him being on the Pk utterly amazing anyway. My wildest hope is he is secretly filling in for Nash because he is tall.
I am starting to take this personally that AV is out to prove me wrong.
Off topic but Pyatt is now on the first line. I think he should be in the lineup, especially with no Cally, Hags, or Nash. But why does he keep moving up?
Yes, agree in principle but it was such a crazy idea it might have worked.Can a strong will to win ( and nobody has a stronger will to win then Mess) overcompensate for lack of experience? I think yes and Slats would not take the gamble ( a huge gamble) but to be a winner you must think outside the box and take appropriate . would ihave worked? If anyone could have pulled it off it's Mess but Guess we'll never find out.
off topic but i LOVED those dark blue lady liberty sweaters. theyre 1000% better than the awful milk colored 3rd jersey or recent years that just says 'new york". hello. there are 3 new york teams.
miss those sweaters bad.
here they come. the fans from yesteryear who live in the past and want to "get the band back together".
might as well get graves and richter back in too.
AV matches lines- really really matches lines, so we'll have to see how Pyatt works out.Not too worried at this stage.Richards stays on track and Lundqvist remains sharp and we win .Clowe is out. And Rangers have a group playing well-both Moores, Brassard, Boyle,Staal, Fast.
I officially want AV fired... Seriously Taylor Pyatt is on the first line? Are we watching the same games. I would argue he's Been the worst player on the ice (DZ) aside... I mean seriously
I doubt very seriously that the team would have been winless with Mark and Brian at the helm. In fact, I never dreamed the team could have started this badly with ANYONE as the coach. I love the Rangers and always will, but what the management did to Mark was something I never dreamed could ever have happened. (given what I thought he meant to the franchise) I have little doubt that Mark will win a Stanley Cup as coach before the Rangers win one. That would be nice for him and not so for his detractors.
I wonder how they would have felt in 1991 if Rod Gilbert and Eddie Giacomin wanted to coach the Rangers? Just a wild guess, but I would think Messier would not have been OK with that.
@jvr How's the Wolf Pack doing??
This whole Mashinter thing gets better and better, too damn funny, this blog fills so many empty spaces
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG wow first place teams tonight, hope the pack can win
@shoot_the_goalie Well said. In any activity that measures individual production (Hockey) it is a mistake to assume a great producer like Mess and #99 possess the leadership/coaching desire.skills and abilities which are very different from great production skills. It is difficult to find a great producer who is willing to develop coaching/leadership skills gleaned in minor league coaching gigs as you so wisely suggest.
Unfortunately sports and business make the same "promotion mistake" over and over again
@shoot_the_goalie I agree except the comparison to Gretz. Yes 99 won a lot of championships but he's not even close to possessing the sheer will to win of Mess IHMO.
@Wallace1 Now I've seen everything - welcome the the bizzaro wacko world of the 13/14 Rangers
@Betweentheworlds glen has to pick a coach with his MIND, not his HEART.
@IcyCup i'm in the minority, but i think the liberty sweaters were hideous. so glad they were retired.
@IcyCup Actually, Graves and Richter would probably make a better tandem than Mess & Leetch for coaching ;-)
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane fired? already?
@gravey94 Seriously. Mess ran Neilson out of town, and that guy was widely respected around the league.
thats the radio. i doubt we get a live video of it.
Yes Icy, but don't under estimate the power of the heart lol - seriously it would have been a mental decision, off the charts to give a guy who's overcome all challenges in this sport and succeeded t every juncture a shot at coaching, but it would have been Slats' head on a platter if it failed and don't blame him one bit.

"True genius lies within intuition" Albert Einstein
Humans use 10% of their brains on average - the other 90% are connected with abstract thinking and intuition. The only reason that you are correct in what you are saying is that humans are primitive fucking animals who have not learned to use the greater portion of their minds yet to tap into the higher realms of intelligence, so they have to rely on these primitive, and oft inaccurate tools you mentioned in pro sports However intuition when activated properly is superior to intellect as it draws on universal, rather than personal consciousness. Just saying...
@Betweentheworlds ZERO experience. NONE.
@Betweentheworlds You start picking a team using your "heart" over your "head" (or gut feelings), you're in for a world of hurt. There's a reason why saber-metrics and analytics are so formally adopted by so many sports now.
@scrangersfan who? gravey or me?
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG @shoot_the_goalie @gravey94 @IcyCup True enough, but I was trying to make the point that it's not superstar players that end up making good coaches. Time will tell on Eakins, but from what I've read, lots of players/organizations consider him a rising star in the coaching ranks.
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane I thought you said give AV 20 games?
