The New York Rangers (2-6-0) lost to the Philadelphia Flyers (2-7-0) by the score of 2-1, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...i don't even know what to think at this point. I'm beyond angry. I'm almost bewildered. The Rangers are currently a harder team to watch than to play against. I guess the effort was better. But when you're playing one of the worst teams in the league, that's going to happen anyway. Although, the Rangers are also one of the worst teams in the league, so who knows.
...and please don't anyone give me the injuries excuse. The Senators won last year without Spezza, Karlsson, Anderson & Michalek. Injuries aren't a time for excuses it's a time for others to step up!
...unfortunately, the players who should be stepping forward and taking on the challenge have let the team and this fan base down.
...and the biggest culprit right now is Stepan. He had almost a full week in between games to get himself fully acclimated to AV's system and he looked more lost than ever out there. I know playing without Nash is going to hurt his game, but, if he's a true #1 center, it's his job to make everyone around him better.
...i've joked about Arniel being the reason for Brassard's struggles, but maybe this is who he is and why Columbus was so willing to dump him in Sather's lap.
...on a positive note, I thought Talbot was outstanding tonight. Cool and calm. AV should have no problem using him to spell Lundqvist moving forward this season.
...talk about the hockey God's evening things out. Are any of Richards' goals legit this year? BTW, with Richards being the only goal scorer tonight, the Rangers still have just three forward with goals this season.
...of all the disappointments tonight, the biggest was Mashinter getting just 4:22 of ice time, including not a second of action after his fight late in the second period. A player finally shows a spark and his reward? A seat on the bench. Unreal.
...with the way things have been going, I don't think there was a single Rangers fan who thought Miller's goal was going to count. He might not have meant to kick it in, but it sure looked like he did.
...very active game from Kreider, but didn't generate enough offensive chances to make me feel good about his performance.
...Michael Del Zotto is just not a very good hockey player.
...assuming AV just allowed the leaders to take care of the room after the game.
...saw a glimpse of the old Girardi tonight.
...so how soon into the home opener will the "Messier" chants start?
...i've seen way worse hits from behind than what Pouliot did tonight, but you're just asking for trouble when you shove a guy from behind near the boards. On the bright side hopefully he'll be suspended.
...coincidence that Richards goal came a minute and a half after Dorsett finally stuck up for a teammate? I think not.
...Staal is pointless with a -9 rating the last six games. Might want to schedule a follow-up appointment on that eye.
...the Rangers are only one point ahead of the last place Sabres in the Eastern Conference.
...as was the problem under Torts this team doesn't drive to the net. Ever. I remember in camp, AV was emphasizing players crashing the goal crease, but I've yet to see it this season. The only way to get out of this right now is to start scoring some ugly goals. Get traffic in front, throw the puck at the net and outwork your opponent for the puck. That has to be the recipe for success right now.
...i still don't think a trade is the answer either. But talk to me in a week.
...things aren't going to get any better as the Rangers head to Detroit for a date with the Red Wings on Saturday likely without Lundqvist in goal again.
AV and player post game reactions...
Here is how I see itAV was never good for the job....my points are as follows:
His teams have only gotten passed the second round once.. in 5 yrs
His teams were consistently known for being soft and would be eliminated by teams that were more physical grind em out teams.(Chicago, LAetc…..)
He has never been part of a championship team either as a player or as a coach…so he would never know of WHAT IT TAKES to even get to the Stanley Cup let alone win one.
He had much better talent in Vancouver and couldn’t get it done with a #1 power play, 2 president cups…and 0 ChampionshipsThis is the NY RANGERS an original 6 team playing in the most famous arena MSG were anything but a championship is a failure of a season
His admission that he does not know the current team or leadership – there is meetings you can have during the offseason, film you can assess what you are walking into and what you have.
He isn’t Casey Stengel and these are the 1956 Yankees and all he has to do is write a line up and do nothing but expect a Championship.
All good coaches adjust to the talent and players they have on their team.. we played great defense all that needed to be adjusted was the wear and tear of mins played.by our defenseman.
We needed help on the power play and that was his specialty why blow everything up over ego and your system hmmm didn’t Torts get fired cause he wouldn’t adjust among other things?
He dresses PYATT every damn game, then sits people based on performance is he smoking crack?
Last night’s game in the last min of play you put your best most gifted offensive players to try and score a goal to tie the game. If you look close you will see PYATT as an extra skater on the F..king ice the whole time… seriously..
AV is useless and a scourge that doesn’t deserve the privilege of honor of coaching this for this franchise….
Stepan – has been uselessfor all those giving him glory of 4.5 – 5 million a yr as a center for his one yr of decent statshave no clue nor do you learn your lessons on over rating players on the final yrs of contracts….review Dubinsky’s contract, Boyle’s contractHE IS NOT A #1 CENTER
DelZero – should have never made this team… based on performance in the last 3 yrs in a pro defensive system. His greatest accomplishment was a hit on NEIL in the playoffs and that’s it. HE SUCKS but yet again we pay him 3 million on a contract cause we over rated him..
Boyle – Useless….all he can do is win face offs… doesn’t fight and if he does he loses every fight, very slow but I will say he is better than PYATT
Poulion – Garbage all about potential of what he did a few yrs ago as a kid… offensively he does finish his checks I will say but again he is better than PYATT
Zucc – guy plays bigger than he isgreat play maker when he has a finisher on his line and on power play… Stands up for himself….even to Chara
Richards – my hope is he has a fantastic season and we can trade his ass to a contender
Hagelin - for all those glorifying him as if he is going to score 25 goals all he is and offers is speed he is inconsistent offensively.. at best... another overrated player..nice chip to throw in a trade
I was looking forward to last night's game, some kids were in the lineup, the lines looked liked maybe they could work outside towers of doom line. Fast i think really think could do some scoring if he gets to skate with some talent. In the beginning bad passing, no fore check , no chemistry etc... but somewhere into game I think the fore check picked up some chemistry developed, they stuck up for each other, things looked like they could go in good direction, even the towers of doom moved the puck a little, though those guys cannot back check i mean always late into their own zone and you cannot succeed in the NHL without a good back check. But then I think the 5 minute major just finished them, down a guy and having to roll out the towers every other shift...done
That being said i didn't feel that bad and believe me I been down on the way this organization does things for a long time, But they are minus 3 top players and the kids showed up, thankfully finally letting them play, so i have a little hope.
What worries me and is my obsession as i said said before is this Pyatt/ AV thing giving him 19 minutes. What is going on there? Will anyone ever question him on this? It scares me.
What did I say from beginning? Stepan isn't worth much. Way to hold out, kid. You are really worth it and are helping this team tremendously.
As bad as they have looked and played, I choose to remain optimistic and hope/believe that they will turn it around when they get to the 20 game mark. With that said ... The following players must GO! They either are terrible, bring nothing to the team or we have other similar style players:
MDZ = Must go. Terrible positioning on D and can't hit the net EVER!
Pyatt = Must go. Brings nothing. Slow, doesn't hit hard, and hardly wins battles
Moore = 4th line center, nothing more and as much as I dislike Boyle, would
rather keep Boyle as 4th line center.
Boyle = Must go if they insist on giving him 3rd line minutes.
Zucc = Must Go but sorry .... just not cutting it and don't think he ever will.
Pouliot = Must Go for his up to date performance and past track record, would prefer they give a kid a shot instead.
Most importantly .... Sather and Dolan MUST GO! Horrible personnel decisions over the past decade. Sather has done NOTHING good for this franchise. Don't be fooled by some good trades sprinkled in between all his horrible decisions. I give Dolan credit for investing the money he does into the team. Do I believe he wants bring a Stanley Cup to NY? Absolutely. But .... his apparent blind love and loyalty to Sather and the over-bearing atmosphere his ego casts over MSG and both teams is a detriment. Get somebody fresh, new blood with a good RECENT history of building teams not for short term success but for long term success. It's pathetic and a blatant slap in the face of all NYR fans that he keeps pushing Sather as the GM on us. How can he not be fed up with this guy? Hasn't won anything ... ANYTHING since becoming GM.
I dont understand why DZ doesnt dive and swipe at the puck on the short handed goal. Among 3 or 4 other baffling plays he just glides from the blue line to the top of the circle with a dumb look on his face. GO FOR THE PUCK
In spite of a "win now" mentality, I still think we should bring up Danny Kristo, put a kid line together and let them have at it!!!
I TOLD YOU WE SHOULD OF HIRED MESSIER TO LEAD THIS TEAM !!!! SATHER SHOULD LOSE HIS JOB !!! #CaseClosed
I said this when they hired av but...he couldn't take all that talent in Vancouver and win a cup...what made the nyr organization think he could do that with our team? I have been not thrilled about his hire since day one. At least they showed some semblance of a spark last night. It was there (very small. But there), they just need to find the back of the net for Christs sake.
This is NOT a coaching thing. The Rangers had a coach that without question was the most demanding, hard-ass coach since Keenan (who won a cup btw). Torts got everything that could be "gotten" out of these players - literally whipping them until they (somewhat justifiably) cried him out of town. Now the whips are gone and you see that the talent, toughness, competitiveness, etc..that remains is not enough. I'm not saying to bring a whip back, but you're crazy if you think any coach can fix this. The coach is not the solution for this clusterfuck....it is the GM!
Talbot is interesting. He played as well as a back up goalie should be expected to play.He didn't disappoint the fans unlike the rest of the team. But he has to get better, one of those goals -the five hole on the shortie, he has to stop.I honestly hope he can continue to improve his game- he's 26 now- so its time for him to be playing in the big league.
People are saying "give it time, it's a new system" - but finishing a check, getting in front of the net, sticking up for your teammates, playing with passion, setting up at least a couple of decent plays, etc. has nothing to do with a "new system" and this team is doing NONE of those things.
I have always backed MDZ....but my god he is awful this season. I can no longer back him. Hes a joke on the ice. as is most of the team. Our team on paper blows with the injuries but they should be doing better then this though. Absolute joke. Im not even into the game, it usually on but Im usually doing other things, I miss when I spent the whole day looking forward to watching them play.
Look I know there is a lot of Mashinter fans out there and he definitely is an adequate enforcer/banger, something the team desperately needs. However, as a hockey player the guy is awful--hes a deer looking into the headlights. Yes I know he scored a bit in the minors but he wont score more than 3-4 goals,10-15 points a year on a full time basis whether he plays 4 minutes a game or 40. I hope I am wrong but the guy looks lost to me.
I don't know this team. No passion, no drive, no desire to win. Lack lust performances. Don't even feel like watching them anymore.
Del Zotto has been BAD for 3 years...nothing new with him. Missing 3 key forwards is an obvious excuse, what is worrying is the lack of team speed and individual skill, especially at the forward position. Now they're home, let's see what the next 10 games bring. If they are 4 and 16 after 20, season will be over.
I'm ready for anything. trade, demotion, GM firing, peter laviolette...I hate what I'm seeing right now. through all the crap this organization has put on the ice over the 2 decades that I've liked the rangers, I've never felt ashamed...until now. I'm not looking forward to watching gutless hockey the rest of the year...
"Making the playoffs" in a sport where 50% of the teams qualify can not be the litmus test for a good organization. And Jesus-effing-Christ ENOUGH with this "it has only been 8 games" crap! They have been at BEST below average to mediocre for 15 years! Saying it has only been eight games is like the victim of 15 years of domestic abuse saying "well, it has only been 20 minutes....TODAY."
Ranger fans have every right to want to shake the bars of their cages and demand change (especially in the GM department). If you aren't mad, you're not paying attention.
Folks - This is essentially the same team that was a playoff team for the last three years. The personnel is there. There just not playing well as a group. Who is responsible for that?
Kevin I remember on this blog you used to always say "in gordie we trust" , not so trusting... Right now I dont think we have drafted one prospect that will ever be a superstar. When are the Rangers going to have a homegrown superstar??? We always have to get him from a trade or free agency. That is a big problem.
@mando24179Again I am really worried when they announce players at their first home game that Pyatt's mental state could be harmed by the fan's reaction. They should trade or waive him before that, i think that would be less damaging for him.
@DaveFL I agree he has a man crush on PYATT... the guy sucks... saw him trip over the blue line twice in the game before PHilly
@blueshirt21 he is over rated... very soft and inconsistent....
@NlordYstanleyR if he dove it might hurt...
@ejirish Agree. Kristo is a scorer. Could he play worse than Pouliot? Brassard looked terrible last night. Couldn't keep the puck on his stick. Why is Fast still up? He looks lost and weak.
@Say my Name he signed the dotted line for the job...... he looks like Bobby V and t
@Say my Name Importance of a GM, who certainly has the most influence on an NHL hockey team, cause he puts together all the parts.
To somewhat add to your point, Keenan couldn't have won that cup unless he "played GM" by forcing Smith's hand and getting all those players that fit his style. He had to mortgage the NYR future (along with Smith), but he got the personnel that worked with his coaching style, and won a Cup through it.
So you could argue that Keenan "the GM" was a big reason the NYR won the Cup, not Kennan "the coach"
@fs2020 He definitely had his shaky moments (two pipes).
@AL55S Or maybe Tom Poti doing a cover of Tom Petty. That would really bring down the boos.
@BroadwayBlueZ I thought it was "Messier Watch?" lol
@Scott_from_Jersey Agreed. But he's still gotta work on his positioning, which affects his strength on the puck. I think that's his biggest weakness right now.
@ChrisP This season? The guy can't play. He's a joke and when he leaves the Rangers will never stick with another team...
@freebie23 That's more than Orr ever contributed and about on par with Rupp while he was with the Rangers. I'll take that everyday from a 4th line banger/enforcer. As long as he's not a liability on the ice, which he's not, leave him in the lineup.
@freebie23 Frankly, if Mashinter can score 3-4 goals/10-15 pts a year for a 4th liner who's main objective is to "police" the ice, I'll take it!
@Say my Name Amen
yeah - but this is season is a MAJOR step backwards. That's all I'm saying. At least they were competitive before. Now they are getting creamed by everyone except the worst teams. There's been only one major change and that's the coach. And he sucks. 8 games has been 8 games too many.
How do you come up with that this is basically the same teamas the past 3 years? Almost half of the team showed up from Columbus last year and they knew nothing but losing while they were there. Add in Pulliot and Pyatt and a few players playing their first NHL games this year and it's not the same team at all!
@IMPRISON SATHER Frankly, they weren't so great the last 3 years either (with the exception of the overachieving 2012 season)
@TheKing Aren't we forgetting Henrik?
@DaveFL @mando24179 This is a pretty good assessment mando IMHO - and I was thinking about Step, who seemed to be starting to break out last season, and how these freakin holdouts destroy players' momentum. MDZ was a promising young defenseman who has basically sucked ever since his holdout. dubi took a step back and now Step seems to be following in their footsteps and he got nothing for his efforts. Why he couldn't just look at the team, the cap etc. and went along with the program I don't know but he's not the guy who made everyone play better around him like he was last year. Only 8 games in yes but that's 8 games a good player, our #1 center has sucked and his team is now 2-6
@IMPRISON SATHER Dude...we are on the same page. This is on Sather....how many years of inept teams? Sather has to go....YESTERDAY. This is ridiculous.
No. They weren't. I agree. Which is why this year's major step backwards is even more infuriating. But at least they weren't top 2 worst teams in the league. That's on the coach. The fact that they are perenially mediocre is on Sather, and by extension, Dolan
@shoot_the_goalie Come on we all know henrik was pure luck. Im talking about forwards, guys that just have those gifted skills and put that WOW on your face when they score or make a great play. Every prospect i have seen thus far has not shown me one moment that he is going to be special. You look at the elite teams right now in the NHL, every team has 1 or 2 players that they drafted and are killing it The best player we have drafted in the last 10 years is Callahan who has never passed 30 goal mark. That is horrible and inexcusable. Why doesnt anyone else see this?
@IMPRISON SATHER call me optimistic, but I'll fully blame AV if they finished bottom 2 at the end of the season. Yes, they've played like crap so far, but to judge his tenure on 8 games is unfair. It's a new system, new coach, new personnel, and injuries (two being our No 1 scorer and No 1 goalie - both superstars) Everyone is justified to blame Sather though cause of his proven (or non-proven) track record. I don't blame Dolan for anything except higher ticket prices and hiring/not firing Sather cause that's giving Dolan too much credit.
@TheKing Well, part of drafting is luck, so you can't exclude Hank from the conversation. Somewhere, a scout (Rockstrom) saw something in Hank, and it turned out that scout was a little lucky, but it was not just all sheer luck.
But to go to your point. Superstars usually come out of the 1st round. There's the occasional late draft pick superstar (i.e. Hank, Zetterberg), but that's very very rare. On top of that, usually the legit superstars come from the top 5 draft picks overall each year. When was the last time the NYR had a top 5 draft pick? (I think it was Pavel Brendl at no. 4 under Neil Smith) The closest they got in recent time (Sather) was the no 6 pick (which was Al Montoya). The NYR, under Sather have been ok, but they've never been in the position to draft one of the "superstars" you see today. Maybe their best chance was 2003, when the draft was deep, and they picked...Hugh Jessiman. Ugh.
So, unless you get a top 5 pick in the draft, your chances of getting a superstar (like Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, etc) just ain't gonna happen, and in order to get that top 5 pick, you either gotta trade some serious pieces for it, or you gotta be really really bad, and the NYR just have never been bottom feeders (even in the early 2000s)
Just for fun, let's assess the NYR draft picks under Sather:
2000: no 1st round pick
2001: Dan Blackburn (10) - pretty good goalie but career ending injury
2002: no 1st round pick
2003: Hugh Jessiman (12) - ugh
2004: Al Montoya (6) - ok goalie/ Lauri Korpikoski (19) - decent player
2005: Marc Staal (12) - closest to superstar but just suffered 2 serious injuries
2006: Bob Sanguinetti (21) - borderline NHLer
2007: Alex Cherapanov (17) - unfortunately died
2008: MDZ (20) - not playing great, but still an legit NHL defenseman
2009: Kreider (19) - jury still out, but he's shown flashes of elite skill
2010: McIlrath (10) - too early to tell
2011: JT Miller (15) - currently an NHLer but too early to tell.
2012: Brady Skej (28) - too early
2013: no 1st round pick
With the exception of 2003 (Jessiman) the NYR either had bad luck (injury & death), no 1st round pick, or pretty much drafted players of the correct caliber for their draft positions. Sather, for all the ire he gets, has actually done ok in the draft. Compare NYR picks to other teams picks, year to year (except 2003), draft position to draft position, and you'll see.
Simply, the NYR are never in draft position to get one of the more "sure fire" elite players.
