The New York Rangers (1-3-0) lost to the Anaheim Ducks (3-1-0) by the score of 6-0, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...would it make anyone feel better if I said to relax because it's only the Rangers fourth game of the season? I didn't think so.
...seriously, I don't even know where to start. It's like these guys have never played hockey before in their lives. Defensive breakdowns like you'd see in pee wees, zero offensive pressure and I have no idea what happened to Hank. I know they're trying to learn a new system, but there's no way it should look like this much of a disaster. Have a little pride fellas.
...and the sad thing is the players wanted this. Apparently they felt playing defense was over-rated.
...a year and a half ago this team was in the Eastern Conference Finals, now they're the Columbus Blue Jackets. Literally.
...on the bright side, at least Lundqvist's contract size is diminishing with every shot on goal. The Rangers should be able to afford him by next week.
...speaking of goaltenders tonight...
@TheNYRBlog at least Hiller looks good. Ya know, for next season...— Mike M (@mmaselNYR) October 11, 2013
...for everyone's reference, it took Trottier 54 games to get fired.
...Brassard continues to be invisible as that Arniel hire looks better and better by the minute.
...so much for Richards' historic 82-goal season.
...we interupt this recap for a reader question...
@TheNYRBlog is there a 30 day lemon law on coaches so you can return them and get your money back?— Darren Cohen (@FinsUpDNC) October 11, 2013
...you know guys, Avery's fashion business was shut down and I heard he's just sitting around doing nothing.
...in all seriousness, I have one word to fix all this mess: MASHINTER.
...good to see Asham and Dorsett fighting when it doesn't matter instead of after their teammate takes a head shot.
...wonder how Stepan is feeling about holding out for so long now? -3 tonight.
...at least Boyle was good on faceoffs tonight. 16-for-21.
...i'm not sure how AV can justify putting Del Zotto back in the line-up Saturday night. Expect Falk.
...got to wonder if this continues, how long it'll take for Sather to make a move. No way he can stand for this much longer. Especially when it could ultimately be his neck on the line. LOL! Yeah right.
...big spot for team leadership right here, especially with a head coach who likes to take a hands-off approach.
...off tomorrow then right back at it against another top Western Conference team in St. Louis on Saturday.
Fire Alin maybe? something has to be done cause this is the worsed defending Rangers team I have ever senn bro.
I'm a lttle bewildered with this team. I really thought they were better than this. They looked like keystone cops last night at times. I'm holding out hope that they will learn the system and play better down the road.
On a side note since there was so much to be disgusted with, I'm sure this will fall thru the cracks.......great job by Ashum to expose how stupid the taking off your own helmet rule during a fight! What a moron Ashum is for taking off the other guys helmet after he politely asked him to. Jesus, he should of just clocked him n been done with it instead of giving them a powerplay. What a stupid rule!
So are we all in agreement that the motto should have been 'clean sweep' instead of 'clean slate' for AV? Clean slate appeared to have been BS anyway, when we went to battle this season with the same crew we nded last season with.
Watching DZ during that play where the King came out of the crease....that alone makes me never want to see him wearing a blueshirt ever again. The sad part is, he's done bonehead things like this his entire career. "He's still young and d-men take longer for their game to come around". If I had a nickel for everytime I heard that I'd be as rich as that a-hole Sather. He's 23 and in his 5th NHL season......F*CK DelScrubo!!!! Get rid of him now while he still has value. Please!!!!
No offense, no defense, no goaltending. I really can't believe it. I can't see us competing against St. Louis with the way we've been playing.
I was really disapointed in the first period down two goal when Lunqvist gets run over and there was no response. I know if was not on purpose but you simply can't have a guy run into your goalie like that with no response. I thought after last game with the lack of repsonse after the hit on Nash the Rangers would be looking for a reason to jump a guy but nothing. Instead you have Asham and Dorsette fighting when it doesnt matter.
So are we rebuilding again? Maybe we can trade Lundqvist and Cally for some 3rd and 4th rnd picks. Come on Sather...give us some of that GM magic!
No worries though, I''m sure if they keep losing all the prices in the Garden will come down and we'll all get refunds on our cable bills....right?
Take a break from watching the Rangers and play NHL 14. You can win the Cup!
@TheNYRBlog 3 reasons the rangers suck: 1) Glen Sather, game has passed him bye 2) roster is slow, zero skill 3) new dzone system
The Rangers can't keep collecting number 1 picks other teams gave up on, over priced veterans ,their own picks that don't pan out and trade players or youth that seem work out for other teams.
Hockey today is fast, young, skilled and preferably big and the Rangers just don't have players, plain and simple.
I said this before there needs to be some wholesale changes in the thinking in the organization.
@Paula, I've been saying it for years, Delzaster does not contain the smarts to play defense, he has the tools just not the brains. So he may owe you every so often with a cross ice pass but majority of the time he's a skating minus without a clue of what to do in his own end.
It's so unexplainable and uncharacteristic of this team to lose this way that it doesn't hurt that bad yet. It seems surreal. I think we have a team full of last year's brad richards. Not confident in the system = over thinking. I honestly feel they are tripping over their own heads. Hank... Can't explain Hank. And I love AV and what he can bring but it would great to get just a little more passion out of him. I'd like him to be pissed. Torts always made me feel better because I knew if I was pissed he was 10x more pissed. That said, AV will still be great for this team it is some seriously bad growing pains.
As fans, we need to mount a campaign to have Sather fired. All out blitz. Organized chants in the stands. Signs. etc.
it's not about the road trip, it's simple, anytime a team changes coaches and system there is a steep learning curve. It's on the coach to make that curve as easy as possible to digest for his squad. The team looked like world beaters vs. the Kings, but got absolutely owned the next 2. Reliable defenseman made squirt type plays, they're actually intentionally trying not to block shots. There is zero enthusiasm on this team. Whereas last year, Torts would ramp this team up, he leaves it to his leadership. His leadership is Callahan, Richards and Staal. All three of these leaders are PASSIVE leaders, like their coach. This is why torts worked so well with the leadership group of this team, because the team leaders offset the coaches aggressiveness and vice versa. This is not a knock against Cally Richards and Staal in any way. The entire team mentality is now passive in energy. Cally leads by example, there needs to be a voice in the locker room.
@TheNYRBlog Can't wait for home opener: "VIGN-EAULT MUST GO! clap clap clapclapclap VIGN-EAULT MUST GO! clap clap clapclapclap"
OK People, calm down. If you ever played...or coached...and introduced a totally new, 3 zone system to a team, you've seen this picture before. It's too bad we had to face the top teams in the west while trying to not only learn the new, but forget the old. Read and react reflexes combined with muscle memory changes tend to slow down the process in your mind and body!! The games were so fast, players were caught in between and if you think it looked bad, believe me, it felt worse. Give them a break. I would look to a much better performance in Washington next wednesday, after some intense practice time at home. I guarantee you, it will pass!!!
@Paula while I agree with you about believing with this style of play they have to get rid of guys like Boyle and Pyatt just to slow to play this system as far as DZ he's looked just as bad as the rest of the D including Girardi, and I'm not giving Staal any excuse if your eye isn't good sit down and let someone else in
Is it just me or did Del Zotto look like he was sleep walking? UGH! Miss the fire and passion of this team...here's to hoping it returns, and SOON!
To all those saying it could be the road trip. I would be less concerned if we played okay in the beginning of the road trip and looked like we have at the end of this 8 game stretch. So far the travel has NOT been that terrible. They have stayed in the western time zone and mainly in the State of California!! They are not traveling that much yet. Does it suck to be on the road this much? Yes, but so far it has been 4 of 8 on the road. Now 4 game road trips, while uncommon, do occur in the NHL. They are professionals. Like I said, if they looked like shit in games 6-8 on the road after visiting multiple time zones, then I would say yes it is the travel. But right now it is no different that if they had played the Bruins, Capitals, Sabres, and Flyers. They have not traveled that much yet!
Yeah well looks aren't everything. The guy is 6'7" for effin sakes. Use it!! The team as a whole is suckin so....
Interesting stat of the day.
Top 7 players in the +/- category of the league are currently all SJ Sharks.
To all those saying Torts was a terrible coach, all I can do is laugh. This team is pathetic. Always has been, always will be under Sather/Dolan. I have turned from one of the proudest fans, to questioning if I can ever cheer for them while Sather is still the GM. I cannot even fathom how we pay some of the highest ticket prices in the league for this. Sad thing is I was ranting last year about how we blew up the team for Nash, a player who is untested in the playoffs and in big games (a player who has also played for more coaches with 1 team than most players play for in a career!). Then we make a huge coaching change with two totally different philosophies with a team built for the defensive system. THESE ARE NOT LOGICAL GENERAL MANAGER MOVES!!!!
@calithirteen And Joe Micheletti says, "...and they take off each other's helmets..."
@FireSather What value does DelShitzo even have now? Who in their right mind would trade from even their farm system for him? It's horrible to watch him. This started last season w/ him and it's only gotten worse. As much as he deserved to be benched I have a feeling that not only will he not be benched, he'll still be on the power play as well! Total joke!
This is what you're worried about? How bout worrying about rootig for a team that doesn't even look like it belongs in the NHL?
@SA24"Torts always made me feel better because I knew if I was pissed he was 10x more pissed." Couldn't have said it any better myself.. I know there were hiccups last year but making a decent run in the playoffs with a shortened season was more than enough to be happy with the system. Yeh, I get it, torts was a little too hard on players, and that affected their ego's but man the eff up! you play the toughest sport in hockey, go up to the coach like a man and ask what would like you to do better..
for more on torts : http://seenive.com/v/951587205720240128
@SA24 Why do you love AV so far? I am waiting to see why everyone loves this guy. Especially with Arniel behind the bench as well.
@rangersfan Fans tried that once. Dolan doesn't care about the fans. Don't waste your time.
@NYRfan46 How about, A-VERY! A-VERY! lol
@JustinRP37 Torts is not a terrible coach, but he's not a great coach by any stretch of the imagination either. He's average. I don't care that he won a cup with TB, because it wasn't all to his credit. It's like saying Marc Andre Fleury is a great goalie cause he won a cup with PIT, when in fact we all know he's an average NHL goalie.
We as fans sometimes give too much credit (and blame) to one person, when it takes a lot of parts to win in the NHL. Example: Messier is often glorified as the reason we won the cup in 94 when in truth that team had all the right parts, and frankly I think the most important player in that run was Leetch, but I digress)
If we can blame one person in this, I agree with you, it's Sather. He currently has the most influence on the team as a whole, and since he's been with the NYR he's done a pretty terrible job. But let's face it. He's not going anywhere unless he chooses to step down.
Yes this is what Im worrying about because this team is better than they have been playing but the fact that they come out and play gutless hockey after getting blown out and losing their best player is a big problem.
@JustinRP37 @SA24 I loved watching them against LA. AV brings a fluid game with strong forechecking. If you look at his teams, they all move the puck fast and create open space. It doesn't take the Sedins to make his system and style dangerous. Other than the LA game where we saw the Rangers in rare form, I haven't seen anything great about AV as a rangers coach. I'm basing my comment off of what I've seen from him before. And you gotta be patient. It's not easy but I can see us in February with a team that's clicking saying "hey remember when we sucked earlier this year". Let's just see how this goes.
@TheNYRBlog @NYRfan46 No way is Avery the answer. hope that's a joke
@shoot_the_goalie Exactly. I am not saying Torts was the best, but he helped build the team with Sather for his style of coaching. Then after we made the ECF, Sather decided we needed a massive change in players, thus the following year, Torts system did not work well. Then this year Sather decided, well let's try the hands off approach with AV, and now we have this mess. Sather is the main issue. Coaches just implement playing style, but they are not in charge of personnel. AV would be highly successful here with the right people.
Sather will only step down for health reasons I think. Hell, he hardly even comes to NYC anymore.
@SA24 "And you gotta be patient. It's not easy but I can see us in February with a team that's clicking saying "hey remember when we sucked earlier this year" --> not with this lin-up of slugs.
Perhaps rather than being so focused on what rookie would make the team during pre season AV should have decided early and been focused on teaching the starters how to play his system. This is just hard to watch.
@FREE MASHINTER @JustinRP37 @SA24 But he didn't even reach out to the players this summer. He took his sweet time getting ready and then the evaluation period took forever. Some is his fault. Yes the players seem like they are on another planet, but all I can say is what the fu** is going on?! It is like an implosion. They look just like the Blue Jackets used to, except the Blue Jackets would at least play the first two periods of the game before imploding....
@rangersfan @FREE MASHINTER @johnnyb3910 I used to post on the MSG Network forum. A few years ago MSG went as far as to censor the word "Dolan", would automatically change it to *****, like you were cursing.
Her certainly has an ego, but I'm guessing a good Dolan chant would get you banned from the Garden.
So let's hurt dolan where it matters most to him. HIs ego. We should be able to come up with some good insulting chants directed specifially at him.
