According to the Katie Strang at ESPN.com, Ryan Callahan was back in a "contact" blue jersey during practice today. Yesterday, Alain Vigneault had the Rangers captain in a non-contact yellow jersey despite being cleared for contact the other day.
...good to have him officially back at practice. Let's hope he bangs a couple of teammates around to toughen them up for the regular season. God knows they need it from what I saw this preseason.
Carl Hagelin is still skating in the non-contact yellow jersey.
Meanwhile, Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record gives us the likely lines for tomorrow's season opener...
Falk and Asham were the extras.
...i'm still really hating that third line. Would look much better with Kreider, Lindberg or Hrivik. Or as I've said, how about flipping Pyatt and Miller.
...i know Pyatt has been the whipping boy around here lately, but who knows, maybe in his second year he takes more of a leadership role as a veteran on the team and thrives in a system he's familiar with from his time with Vigneault in Vancouver.
A couple of new numbers this year if you haven't noticed according to Rick Carpiniello at the Rangers Report...
Miller - #10
Fast - #12
D. Moore - #28
Falk - #44
Pouliot - #67
Finally, the Rangers took a flight out to Phoenix immediately after this morning's practice.
...so ridiculously pumped for tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LGR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Blake - do u watch the Rangers? Pyatt is a bum. waste of roster spot which hopefully will be given to Callahan and Hags when they return. Sit Pyatt and either Miller/Fast...
man i wish we had Lecavlier... he is so much better than Richards... just walked around the Maple Leafs and had a real nice set up pass. He is gonna hurt us this year I would bet
Ranger fans always need to boo one of their own. It's pathetic! I'm sure it won't be long before it's Del Zotto. Which I think is a decent player. LGR!
Brooks says that based on the free agent market, Callahan could likely command offers of seven-years and between $6 and $7 million as a UFA.
Wow... 6-7 million for 7 years. With Cally's play that is a huge risk. I think 5.5-6 for 6 years is what we need Cally for
Im heading out to PHX tonight and heading back to NY on the red eye after the game tomorrow. Hope they don't disappoint. Either way I'm pumped for this season to start!
Maybe put Richards with Boyle and Pyatt and Sather can watch 9 million plus in cap space move slowly around the ice.
Very optimistic take on Pyatt. He'd probably have more success if he takes that anvil off of his back
Flip Del Zotto and Moore too. I would still like to see Moore on the PP point ahead of Richards or Girardi.
“I know the Rangers and my agent have been trying to get a deal done and unfortunately we don’t have a deal done. For me, now it’s time for me to focus on the game. I want all my focus to be on the game and on winning. That is where all y focus is now. So if they continue to talk, the Rangers and may agent, so be it, but for me, I’m not getting involved and I won’t talk to my agent right now because all I care about is helping this team win."
Hank on his contract.
So basically like we all thought, he isn't signing anything until he sees the Rangers can compete.... a slow start (which is very likely) and a bad record before the trade deadline could end up forcing Sather's hand... yikes.
Old Marian Gaborik Jerseys are deeply discounted on NHL.com. Was thinking about getting one then finding a way to pull the name off and put Miller on instead.
" ...i know Pyatt has been the whipping boy around here lately, but who knows, maybe in his second year he takes more of a leadership role as a veteran on the team and thrives in a system he's familiar with from his time with Vigneault in Vancouver."
I'll settle for a couple more goals, really!
@Free Lindberg If Cally wants 6 million and wont negotiate I trade him without even blinking. That's ridiculous.
@Free Lindberg I'd give Cally the last 7 years of Brad Richards deal, I have no issue with that. It's probably more than he deserves, but it would be money better spent. At 28 I don't see any issue with 6 years, but I assume you're refering to all the bumps and bruises, as well as seperated joints and broken bones, he's seems so willing to get, which is a good point.
@ATCRyan I'll be there! The crowd is going to be 50/50.
Wow! So cool.
@DaveFL better yet let slats watch those idiots play in Hartford...9 million with zero upside is a joke, how can you think Pyatt helps a team win games is beyond me
I understand keeping Moore with Stralman for balance and keeping the minutes more even so guys last the season. AV believes DZ has all kinds of upside (he may decide otherwise in a few weeks) and he can see DZ effective while joining the rush. If the coaching staff can show DZ how to do it, it just might work. Unfortunately, Staal is going to have to hang back and be the lone D-man in so many situations -- and just as Staal's offense is improving!
Moore will earn more time as he goes along here because he will be successful. I hope the PP will be successful too, but they may wind up trying Moore there at some point just because Moore shows how well he does in other areas.
@Free Lindberg Yea - not good. Hopefully they will work something out during the season but he has really set himself up for moving on. Slats has no leverage in this one and Hank may end up teaching him a lesson in what is like to be on weak side of negotiations.
@ChrisP I believe that the wing is his only option. I don't want him centering the 3rd line. The 3rd line needs to be gritty and hard on the puck. Bring some energy. With that said ... Boyle, Pyatt don't cut it for me either. For now, would rather see Miller centering Boyle and Fast with Moore centering Pyatt and Asham/Dorsett
We'll have to wait and see but it could be even better as he'll have less responsibility (in a manner of speaking). He could still take some faceoffs on his strong side but he won't have quite as much of a back and forth game as the defensive duties of a winger may not require him to do quite as much skating (which, based on the way he's looked ...) Obviously Richards has been around the block a few times so I'm not worried about him understanding the role. It could be a great line like that, but we'll just have to see how it goes.
@shishya100 are you actually talking about Richards?
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG It won't last past first game as once Cally is ready that line will change.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG if it lasts more than 3 I'll eat my hat.
@PenaltySh0t @Free Lindberg I have always said that Cally is at his best as a 3rd liner. But this amount of money for this long is asking for trouble... I love him, and he is the captain, but facing facts... he has struggled to play a complete season or half season (last year) healthy for its entirety for awhile. ... He is a grinder, and honestly north of 5.5 for a grinder and an additional 9 for Hank... that will handicap the Rangers for sure... If he is asking for 7, I would rather have Thomas Vanek or Henrik Sedin... but thats just me.
@johnnyb3910 @Free Lindberg Let me get this strait, you would compound one mistake by adding another by over paying Callahan? obviously you are not a business man, why would you knowingly compound one mistake with another. Make no sense to me. We all know that while Cally is a solid NHL player, he is not worth more then 5mills a year at the most.
I don't deny that Del Zotto has talent, the problem is in his head. To put it bluntly, I think he's not the sharpest crayon in the box and just doesn't have the capacity to play intelligent hockey. He makes 2 big mistakes for every good play. I figure he can do less damage on the 3rd pair.
@AG_Blue @ChrisP I just hope this doesn't get to him. Every player balances pure skill and confidence/smarts differently. Some guys can get out of a funk in one shift by just relying on skill. Richards has proved he's not that guy. His game is so reliant on his confidence game to game, week to week, etc. And right out of the gates he's being told he's not one of our top 2 centers.
I just hope he can adjust rather than becoming a headcase about it. Whether he's bought out this summer or not, bottom line is he's taking up about 10% of our cap space, so he's got to at least be mediocre. You're right AG, it should be easier, less responsibilty defensively, he can conserve energy on shifts, but I'm just concerned about between his ears.
Haha, I just thought it was funny, man. No worries ;)
pentacle? maybe you mean pinnacle ...
@johnnyb3910 I totally agree.
I meant that if we had to spend $6.5 Mil I'd rather it be on Cally than Richards. Honestly neither of them deserve that kind of money, not many on this team do, but despite the hard cap, the free agent market still allows most players to name their price, and as long as one team is willing to pay, other teams will do the same for a guy like Callahan. They'd rather be up against the cap with him than see him on a rivals roster.
i hear you. and, again, it bugs me that he'll likely cut into what could be Staal's point production. At least everyone is in their natural position this way (I think). It would be cool to see Staal and Moore though ... hopefully over the course
