Update, 1:20 p.m.:
NYR expected to promote goalie Cam Talbot to take Marty Biron's place. Biron, of course, is on waivers. Talbot has been playing well in AHL.— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) October 14, 2013
...the Rangers already have Talbot under contract so he will not count towards 50 contract maximum under the CBA. Could be why Rangers went with him over Hedberg.
#NYR GM Glen Sather confirms Marty Biron and Arron Asham are indeed on waivers.— Andrew Gross (@AGrossRecord) October 14, 2013
...the most surprising thing about this move is that Dorsett wasn't placed on waivers as well.
...i wonder what the plan is for the backup goaltender now (Assuming Biron isn't going to be on the roster whether he's claimed or clears). Bring Hedberg back or recall Talbot. My decision would be Talbot. Although, there's a bit of a risk bringing in an unproven commodity.
...and you all know I'm rooting for Asham, who cleared waivers in July, to be claimed as it likely means a Mashinter recall!
NHL teams have 24-hours to claim either player, who were both on the ice practicing with the rest of the team this morning.
If not claimed, Biron's cap hit in the AHL will be $375K, while Asham's will be $75K.
Sorry but Dorsett is an almost total liability. He's like Rinaldo, but even like effective in that role. I'm not wild on having a guy who top 2 in league in PIM. Cannot help your team if you are always in the box. Dorsett would be a good player if he could learn to push the edge but not always go over it. Should have absolutely been waived. He certainly has no place in the line up against the Caps. Rangers put the Caps on the PP, they stand no chance and then will be embarrassed in an over-hyped NBC national game. They must win Wed game to gain some confidence and good morale. Don't usually have MUST WINS this early in season, but Wed sure is. And Rangers have to do it without Nash. Sigh.
I don't understand the Dorsett hate. I really don't He had one really bad game and we all throw him to the wolves. It's tough when he's the only player on this damn team that gives a shit, and he's always gotta be the one to rile everyone up. Give the damn guy a chance. Should we waive Girardi because lately all he does is make mistakes? Same with Staal, if he learned to cover his fucking man that STL game, we could have won. Lets waive him too. For gods sake.
I feel bad for Marty Biron, hes a great guy and I wish him well...the Asham drop I understand, a middleweight fighter with no upside offensive production
although I like Biron his lack of skills seem to be deteriorating. asham, what ever, hopefully the first of many moves.
Article from Spector Hockey outlining the current bottom feeders in the NHL. Indicating that Winnipeg's defense continues to be their achilles heal. Maybe you're on to something. Too bad no one thinks Falk is a suitable fill-in anymore if we move two D-men for Kane. Maybe one of the two and a prospect?
Maybe KHL can take Pyatt, Dorsett, MDZ, D. Moore, Boyle, Girardi......I better stop there won't much of team left
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane DZ and Girardi for Nail? whatcha think, healthy scratch 2 games ina row
when pyatt skates its like watching a 350 pound 80 year old woman try to roller blade down a gravel road
"He's still feeling symptoms, so until I hear otherwise I don't expect him back"- Alain Vigneault update on Rick Nash, who remains off ice
for anyone that thinks Nash is close to returning.... you are wrong, and this is a big problem if he is still feeling symptoms 5 days later
I like the Talbot move. Biron lost his luster last year with his gargantuan 5-hole. Though I am not sure about the Asham one. You cant deny he is passionate about staying on this team and he scored some big goals for us last season with a few fights. He was the go-to guy as far as toughness and he came through...
Any chance this is also a warning shot over Pyatt's bow? On the list of guys who have been less than impressive (although I didn't think Asham was that bad), and factoring in age, I think Pyatt could be next on the list.
Biron has one bad start and he gets the ax? Yeah, he looked awful in St Louis but he's been a really solid backup his entire time as a Ranger and he's really well liked in the room. I don't like this move.
Asham on the other hand, I'm not going to miss.
Bob McKenzie at TSN reporting it'll be Talbot over Hedberg as Rangers new backup. Refresh post to see update.
Drop Asham. But overpay Stepan and keep Pyatt, Boyle and the guys who's 4 foot. Makes sense. Call up Haley and Mashinter.
Nash missing practice today... Doubt he will play this week. I have a feeling this will linger for a month or so
Hedberg is Brion 2.0. Pass. Biron showed he lost his quickness last year. At this point, he's just not a reliable back-up. He might be OK in a platoon type role (possibly with Emery in Philly?) , but he's not suited to coming in every 8 or 10 games at this point. It's probably not ideal for Talbot, but he's probably got the athleticism to overcome it a bit. I would say Mashinter or Haley get the call now, in addition to Talbot.
"He had one really bad game and we all throw him to the wolves."
he cost the team the game.
"It's tough when he's the only player on this damn team that gives a shit"
tell that to callahan.
as for staal and girardi, they have trade value whereas dorsett DOES NOT. so to bring them into the waiver conversation doesnt make sense.
i dont get it. did you buy a dorsett sweater?
@jvr great guy doesnt figure into WINS. it is irrelevant. if you want to hire a plumber, do you look for the nicest guy or the best guy for the job?
@trueblue47 Exactly the same as the chances of getting a new owner this season.
@trueblue47 I really want to say 1%, only because the last time the Rangers lost back to back games by 6+ goals in 2000, the GM and coach were both fired shortly after.
But I think Sather's got too many excuses. It will start with the new coach and the new system, then it will bleed in to the offseason as he build a team more suited to AV.
But I would like to believe his tenure is tied in to the success of this coach. To fire a coach who finally had some success and bring in a dud, would have to be grounds for dismissal, even by Dolan. But that's 3-4 years away.
@JosephRaymondOrtiz you do realize that everything you said about asham was in the past tense, right? things that he HAD done in times past.
@Medvjed004 good... then we save an additional 375,000 in cap for a trade
@cb1 biron sucks now. who cares about the past. it has no bearing on winning now. sentiment will not make this team better. sentiment is irrelevant and inherently "past thinking". im surprised at your post.
@cb1 also looked awful in San Jose... not want you want from a goalie that should be playing 20-25 games
@EHBIGAPPLE I'm guessing no. He expects the players to "police" themselves, which I would assume refers to off-season work, too. Considering he hadn't met/spoken to 75% of these guys before the first day of camp, I bet there was no plan.
And it looks like the majority of these guys, except for Richards, really dialed back the offseason workouts when they heard Torts was gone.
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane I think more caution is being exercised considering what happened last year...I hope
@gravey94 Agreed. We might also see Miller or Kreider depending on the health of Nash.
@IcyCup @PenaltySh0t Staal cost us that game just as much as Dorsett did. Yeah Cally cares too but who else? Who else is looking for a big hit to stir up the team? It's hard when you're one of the two players that give a shit. I didn't mean to get technical with waivers, but we've had players play bad enough to ruin games for us (again, Staal cost us that game just as much), but they get a free pass.
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane agreed on Kane over Nail
@trueblue47 negative 2
@mlsranger @queensbee @Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane @cb1 I'm not saying he shouldn't have been placed on waivers, I'm just saying that Henrik has let in tons of goals thus far, and many of them soft, so I think that it's a bit of a stretch to say that if Hank had been in net "we'd have least have gotten a point" - that is FAR from certain based on the first 5 games.
@queensbee @Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane @cb1 Biron looked horrible in pre season and when he was called in San Jose. I know the team is adjusting still, but this just isnt the guy anymore, last year, wasn't he only winning about half his starts, if that? I remember watching and when biron started, you didnt feel as good about the team winning that night...that feeling is only getting worse now. at least with bringing talbot up, you can chalk it up to inexperience not old age.
@gravey94 you have a good point here.
