Both Biron and Asham clear waivers— Pierre LeBrun (@Real_ESPNLeBrun) October 15, 2013
Biron's cap hit in the AHL will be $375K, while Asham's will be $75K.
...Biron didn't rule out retiring if he wasn't claimed, so not sure what his next move it.
...while I was never fully excited about the Asham signing, I was hoping he'd come over here and be an Avery-like agitator. Unfortunately, time after time Asham refused to stick up for teammates and failed to get under the skin of opponents. Now it's time to add him to the list of failed enforcers brought in to replace Colton Orr.
This was a horrible trade last year. We gave up Rupp, who actually fought, stuck up for his team, and would occasionally find the back of the net, for Ashum......a guy who's best days of hockey are behind him. Total waste. I don't recall seeing him win one fight while in a rangers uni and he sure as hell never stuck up for his team like he should have.
Asham's cap hit is so small. He's a vet with decent hands as a forward and proved under torts that he could be trusted. I get that he's not the best enforcer to put in the line up but who replaces him? Biron - yes - we need a better back up. He was ok the last few years but his confidence is completely shot and it's time for us and him to move on.
A buddy of mine (who's actually a Flyers fan) has a thing where an enforcer is only worth his salt - especially to the fans - if he's homegrown. I tend to agree with that...Beloved Rangers enforcers of the last 20 years: Orr, Domi, Langdon, Prust (ok he was around beforehand but made his mark as a Ranger). Unloved enforcers in no particular order: Brashear, Simon, McCarthy, Asham, etc. The only one that gets a free pass is Kocur because he won a Cup.
I heard something on NHL radio this morning that buffalo might be looking to do a yard sale soon, anyone think there's a possibility sather night try to make a move for Steve Ott? Thoughts?
What a soft and terrible team we have...a message was sure sent to the team...it's "don't worry, most of you will still be picking up a check every two weeks regardless of your play." Sure, lets waive Dorsett and blame the season on him. C'mon...the team has no talent and its hard to expect much from them. Girardi and McDonagh will play like they should have been the past few years (mediocre at best) and Pyatt and Boyle will continue to hold spots regardless of how useless they are. But I forgot...Hagelin is coming back...the poor man's Grabner! And thats not saying much! Let's tank the season, get some kids up here (Kreider, Miller, McIlrath, etc.), bring up Haley and Mashinter so I can actually see a hit once in a while, and actually get a good pick in the 2014 draft.
Man I loved Colton Orr...
I remember when he knocked that flyer out 11 seconds in with one punch... Classiv
What's the cap hit if either of these guys retire? Larry Brooks suggested Biron could refuse to go to Hartford, thus becoming a UFA and freeing us of the cap hit.
I'm so depressed about Biron... I hope he gets a chance with another team and doesn't wind up abandoning the game. He's a good guy and this seems so harsh.
@chrisD I don't know if it's so much his confidence as it is his age. He's not what he used to be. I'm sure he's suffered from concussions over the years (I"m sure a few went undocumented) and now he's done.
PS He loses the fight to a much bigger man but how I miss this kind of response: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgQ7s3Z07QQ
@mlsranger Fantastic idea. Its exactly what the team needs. As for Boyle in that role as center, next time they go to Boston, they can leave him there with his family.
@mlsranger In theory he doesn't really fit because you already have Boyle playing that third line Center role but this team could benefit from Ott's snarl.
@Purinton Please dont ever refer to a ranger player as being a "poor mans" islander player...thank you haha
oh and why does everyone on this board keep mentioning mcilrath...he is tough and could fight but he has absolutely no business being in the nhl... he is way too slow and in this day and age you need tough fast defensemen who can skate and move the puck, i dont get why everyone mentions him
@Trade DelZotto+Girardi4E.Kane FREE ORR!???
@lennynyr Glenn Healy?
@johnnyb3910 Cap hit would be wiped off the books for both because their contracts were signed before the age of 35. Would do the org. a big favor but I doubt it happens.
@Joseph Raymond Ortiz one of the true enforcers who always stuck up for teammates. Never forget that game when Brasher went to to toe with Shanny at center ice and Orr responded by going after Ovechkin. Not many in the league as effective at sending a message.
Biron looked awful, simple as that. I wouldn't feel comfortable having him play 20 games because either a) it'd be 20 losses or b) they'd end up putting hank in there on his days off...
I love Biron as much as the next guy, but it's a business.
@erichan Unfortunately, this is the business side of sports.
@PacNYR44 @Purinton Islanders do well with Carkner in the lineup and I am sure his skill-set measures up with his. If not him, than I am on board for a tough defensemen who can hit. Damn...we really miss that...I can't even remember the last time I saw that on the regular...Kasparaitis?
And he wasnt even big...that was just hitting!
@FREE MASHINTER Unfortunately Sather isn't very good at the business side of sports... Let's not forget the Redden and many other flubs.
@jasonshyerThe guy is living off the legacy of his size. We can find a myriad of players who do all of those things. He can't score, he can't fight, and he is a big wuss. You can't force people to be tough. Its just not in his blood.
