For the third time in four games Beniot Pouliot found himself stapled to the bench for long stretches of time during the Rangers 4-3 win over Florida Monday night .
Larry Brooks at the New York Post feels that Alain Vigneault is "clearly losing patience" with Pouliot after playing the winger just five shifts for 3:18 after the first period against the Panthers.
Pouliot has just two goals in 17 games this season.
...Pouliot easily has top six skill, but there's a reason he's on his fifth team in eight NHL seasons. I could understand if he was just snake bitten, but his maddeningly inconsistent effort will be the reason he's sitting in the press box once Nash is healthy or possibly as early as this Saturday when Moore is expected back from an oblique injury. Especially if Miller continues to display the scoring touch from Monday night. If Pouliot isn't scoring he's virtually useless out there.
Another interesting development to keep an eye on was Ulf Samuelsson tinkering with the defensive pairs on Sunday night in an attempt to split up John Moore and Michael Del Zotto who have become a defensive liability together...
"For a couple of shifts in the second period, Moore and Del Zotto got caught on a couple of long shifts that led to more time in our end," Vigneault said to Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record.
...not going to completely blame Del Zotto as Moore has made his fair share of mistakes, but sometimes when your partner is struggling you tend to do too much which only compounds the situation.
...with things going so well for the Rangers, I'd hate to advocate any lineup changes, but I'm not sure how much longer AV can go with Del Zotto. And I don't care who replaces him at this point as Falk, A. Johnson, McIlrath or Allen would all be better options despite shortcomings in all their games.
stuipd to think mdz should be sat...he opens the ice right up with his vision and passing...i could say more but every ranger fan has to blame someone and he is in the lime light for some reason...
DZ-Moore are an abortion together. They both take a lot of chances. put Moore with Stralman and DZ with Staal.
Del Zotto and Moore might both benefit from being paired with more "reliable" type defensemen. They both have the ability and speed to join and lead a rush up ice. Both should in theory benefit from being with a guy who can let them use their skills more knowing that they are better suited to handle a mistake.
I did notice Del Zotto and Moore were split up in the second period. Honestly, that pairing worried me from the moment it was put together but they didn't really have any other options. And is Falk really a better option than Del Zotto? Not sure on that.
And now to vent for a second....
"...but sometimes when your partner is struggling you tend to do too much which only compounds the situation."
People will agree with that and give Moore a pass yet when Girardi and Del Zotto were a pair, they were both bad defenseman and Staal/McDonagh is what made Dan look good. What am I missing??? (Kevin, not saying you would say this but the fan base overall.)
To New York he was brought...upside guy we fans thought... yet alone in the slot... score big goals he does not... and no fights has he fought...as for penalties he's draw squat... on the bench he should rot... all are hopes were for naught...he will soon be forgot...Beniot Pouliot........
Nit picking pedantic nit pick: The Florida game was Sunday. Hey, it's the only thing I disagree with fundamentally in the entire article, so I had to mention.
I have no problem sitting Pouliot on the bench. Others have played much better and he has become expendable (perhaps for someone to protect Stepan/Nash and co. besides Kreider). But to say Miller has found his scoring touch after shooting into an open net is like saying Mike Smith found his when he scored an empty netter. I hope this turns around Miller but even Tom (shoot the fuckin puck) Poti could have scored Miller's goal.
Pouliot = Christensen 2.0. Enough with the reclamation projects. There are reasons why these guys are on more teams than they have years in the league. Pouliot just doesn't have the hunger to use his gifts. Such a waste of talent.
I never like to hate on guys- but this article just made me very happy. Anyone who watches a lot of hockey can see that Pouliot doesn't fit on this team. OK - he scored a game winner, had a few key assists, great! Show those highlights when you get ready to shine up his skill set for a trade. On the other hand/ I really think we need to give Del Zotto some time. I would only consider being happy with him being traded if it included Pouliot and we got a top six right hander.
I feel bad for him because I see moments that he seems like he is being more consistent but then just doesn't get to that point...i know it is hard to keep the momentum going when you get benched but he must come out on the ice every time with his pants on fire..
A benching might be a good thing to help him get his head on straight... Nothing else seems to be working and if that doesn't work then the next step would almost certainly be a change of scenery AHL/trade...
@jasonshyer They tried Danny G. with DZ last year, it was was a disaster. The last person who played well with DZ was Sauer. Sigh.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) Agreed, I think the point is just that sometimes you have to split up pair and see them with someone else to determine who the weak link is, or what was missing from the pair. Some pairs balance well, other pairs have an issue that's glaring because its a trait shared by both players.
I agree some (most) people will give Moore a pass because DZ is the easy target. But in a defensive pair, a lot of it can do with Checks and Balances, and DZ gets pointed at because he hasn't seemed to "click" with anyone.
AV has also pointed to more simpler issues like just pairing to lefties or two righties.
@EugenePlaksienko Anyone smart would request Pouliot be left out of any deal....
@Stinky_NYR_Fan ...with no chance sail his shots...?
@Kovalev27 Kovi had world class talent that would compensate for his lack of focus. BP doesn't have that level of talent IMHO.
@stevzuck11 Actually, Tom Poti when on the NYR, would have missed that shot...lol.
@stevzuck11 Could anyone really have scored that goal? If I remember correctly, Richards missed on an open net in the same game ;-)
(Agree Miller hasn't found his scoring touch with that goal but it was nice to see a Ranger hit an empty net after how many have been unable to the past few years?)
@stevzuck11 Yeah, that was a little bit of a stretch on Miller.
@gravey94 Boy o boy, I couldn't stand Christensen. He still in the league??
@Brandon Boyle I can't see bringing up Kristo yet, especially when we have this other guy, name of Rick Nash, getting close to returning. Let BP be a place holder till Nash is ready, then see if we can make a trade, even if all we get is a draft pick.
@JMK8363 Worked for Zuccarello.
@KreiderisTheChosenOne Doubt you could even get that for him right now.
@johnnyb3910 Agree entirely that sometimes you need to and it's why I started with fact I didn't like the pair. I've also never liked Girardi-Del Zotto pair but it drives me nuts when people use how Girardi plays with Del Zotto to "prove" he isn't a top d-man yet I'm sure those same people are the ones now giving Moore a pass. That was my point.
Also agree it has to do with the simple issue - we need a better split among defenseman. At least we have two righties. I'm pretty sure there was one point where we had one (Girardi) and the rest were lefties lol.
@Kevin DeLury @JMK8363 Zucc is different, IMO, he's stated this is the only team he wants to play for, he (amazingly) has only played in 83 regular season games spanned across 4 seasons. Every benching is one step closer to the KHL for him.
Pouliot on the other hand, is useless. Im sure this isn't the first time he's been benched. 5th team in 8 years. Get rid of him. A fresh start either works or it doesn't. if you're dogging it in the first 20 games on a new team, you just plain don't care.
