Everyone's favorite rumor monger Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun says one of the reasons for the Rangers looking to move Michael Del Zotto is getting his $2.55M off the books. Garrioch then mentions the flexibility the Rangers will need to re-sign Henrik Lundqvist, who could command an eight-year deal in the $8-to-$9 million per-season range.
Garrioch adds that the Senators, Hurricanes, Oilers and Sharks have interest in Del Zotto, but the Rangers want a blueliner in return.
Larry Brooks at the New York Post says the need for a defenseman in return is necessitated by the uncertainty of re-signing UFAs Dan Girardi and Anton Stralman this offseason.
Del Zotto is an RFA at the end of the year.
...no idea why Garrioch is equating trading Del Zotto with opening up cap space to extend Lundqvist. He should know that Lundqvist's new contract wouldn't count until next season, so if the Rangers really needed the cap space they would just find a cheaper alternative to Del Zotto in the offseason.
...great point by Brooks on needing to get a defenseman in return in any Del Zotto deal, as the Rangers could really be caught with their pants around their ankles if both Girardi & Stralman look elsewhere this summer. Unless the organization is confident in McIlrath and Allen being NHL ready next season.
Meanwhile, contrary to recent rumors, Brooks notes that the Rangers have never inquired about the availability of Martin Havlat.
However, Garrioch contradicts that report by stating the Blueshirts have mild interest in the 32-year old winger.
...Brooks is known to spin his own rumor yarn, but I have full confidence in his Rangers sources to know whether or not the Blueshirts have contacted the Sharks about Havlat.
...as far as Havlat goes, I'm very happy to hear the Rangers aren't interested in a $5M per year, injury prone forward.
Finally, with Ottawa below .500 and sitting fifth in the wild card standings, Brooks says, despite having a no-limited trade clause, Chris Neil could have some value to teams looking to stack up with the big, bad Bruins, including the Rangers.
...i've already expressed my interest in the Rangers bringing in Neil. I know a lot of you despise the guy, but isn't that what makes him such an effective player? Assuming none of us were big fans of Avery before he came to town.
...biggest negative of bringing in the 34-year old Neil is that he still has two more years remaining on his contract with a AAV of $1.9M per.
I would take Chris Neil on this team in a heartbeat. Too bad we've been down this road before, and Neil has zero interest in playing in New York.
Replace Girardi and Stralman with McIlrath and Allen? Might as well replace Rick Nash with Michael Haley. My RX: Rangers need to get out of denial and realize they have zero chance of competing for the Cup in the forseeable future. They don't have a single viable impact player in the entire organization; Hartford, College or Juniors. The Wolfpack is more inept at scoring goals than the Rangers. My solution: Trade Lundquist, buyout Richards, use the cap space to sign core players like Girardi, Stralman, Kreider and rebuild the team with draft choices. Of course this will never happen and Sather will continue to bring in the Pyatt's, Pouliots, Falks off the scrap heap.
Thank God for Dave Maloney! Hopefully he'll replace that dumb ass Michlletti soon. I digress. He definitely commented on how solid Stralman was last game and all season for the Rangers and now Brooks is talking about losing this guy!!!
To be clear, Stralman has been the most consistent D all year. I will listen to people arguing McD has been better but all other D have been as unreliable as an expired pregnancy test. He is extremely hard to beat one on one, makes solid break out passes, neutralizes the opposing teams forecheck with his ability to make quick plays, and even gets his shots through from the point instead of banking them against the boards as Girardi seems to try 50 times a game (cept yesterday of course). He is so underrated and it drives me nuts how many people throw him under the bus. He has been a rock back there since the 2012 playoffs and rangers fans need to start showing the love because we need to keep this guy in town (not too much love or we won't be able to afford him). Watch stralsy!!!!!
How about moving Girardi for a solid young puck moving defenseman, and then DZ for a big gritty forward...
Move delzaster; 1 sound game means zero versus all the poor games he has had this season. We need Neil's toughness & jam.
I would just LOVE Neil on the team! But would AV play him?
Why does AV insist that we be a pussy team?
Getting Neil would be exciting and a major positive because it would effect how other teams approach/view The Rangers. Of course that would have to be balanced against losing DMZ.......getting a top six defenseman and the readiness of our own young defenseman.
When Neil would be on the ice his play would inspire the rest of The Rangers to play a tougher meaner game......so so important in the second half and during the playoffs.
He makes just as much mistakes as any other D man we have. Staal sometimes is out of position by a mile, so is Mcd. Girardi often throws interceptions. Stralman plays simple but he has the puck hop over And should we even discuss moore lately? Moore looker horrific against the devs
Wolfpack shutout again... Kristo showing he needs some time to develop. Zero shots, -2 and 2 hooking penalties... yikes
Girardi will he lucky if he doesn't find himself on another team come the deadline if he has no interest in resigning.
i would take Neil if it means giving up Pyatt, or a mid-round pick. After seeing the team last night, there is NO reason to break or change anything. DZ has played better the last 2 games, and he was the one in front of net who swiped the puck from Harms way with Predator in front swiping away at Talbot. DO NOT TRADE DZ!
Del Zotto for Justin Faulk (Carolina) straight up... Both are struggling. I think it could be a solid move for us, and we get about 1.6 in cap space, to give us some flexibility.
@GiveGartneraCup I said to my brother last night that I believe Stralman has had a better season than Girardi. I'm glad I'm not alone in that thought.
@KreiderisTheChosenOne now you're just being silly. imagine if you were the GM for ANY other team. Would you make either of those trades?
@KreiderisTheChosenOne This is really the only move for DZ that makes sense.
Del Zotto is a good 3rd pair guy. On a team with less D depth, he would be top 4. Rangers have struggled with D depth. We have it one year and it's gone the next.
Let's not be in such a rush to trade DZ.
He's been more consistent then Girarid for a couple seasons. G can have some really awful stretches.
