The New York Rangers (13-12-0) defeated the Florida Panthers (7-14-5) by the score of 5-2, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...so basically, when the Rangers outshoot their opponent, they lose and when they're outshot, they score five goals. Got it. Amazing what happens when they take advantage of an opponent's mistakes.
...last night was the perfect example of what a good power play can do for a team. The Rangers were outshot, dreadful in the faceoff circle and dominated on puck possession, but when you're able to score on two of three power play chances it masks a lot of those deficiencies.
...nice bounce back game for Hank, but man, I've seen him give up more cheapies in 18 starts this season than his previous eight years combined. He's got to come up with that Bjugstad goal.
...great to see Nash bang one home, now he needs to go on a run.
...geez, how many flukey goals does Richards have this season? Hockey Gods certainly paying him back for last season's debacle.
...i guess Zuccarello has gotten so bored setting up his own teammates, he decided to help his opponent. BTW, who was it that Zuccarello replaced on the power play point of the second unit? Just checking.
...seriously, when did Stralman become the Rangers best defenseman?
...so much for AV's new strategy of playing 2-1 games.
...Del Zotto traded yet? No? Dammit.
...just 17 saves on 21 shots for Thomas? Must have been the lighting in the arena.
...when the Rangers are losing 61% of their faceoffs, AV has to find a way to get his best faceoff man (Boyle) in the circle.
...i pretty much give credit for the offensive explosion to the return of Pyatt to the lineup.
...you would like to see the Rangers be able to dominate a patsy like the Panthers, but two points are two points and the Rangers are now 3-1-0 in the first four games of this five game trip. Not too shabby.
...things will get a lot more difficult tomorrow afternoon when the Rangers are in Boston.
...Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!!
Post game talk:
for what it's worth ( everything being relative) Pyatt looked pretty good out there in his first game back.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I'm grateful for this cool blog where I can get the inside scoop on my favorite team and share viewpoints with fellow fans. Thanks Kev and staff for your great work.
I've been saying it for years: Stralman is extremely EXTREMELY underrated/undervalued by us fans! Since the 2012 playoff run, I rank him second only to McD on the defensive depth chart (and McD only gets the nod because his very best games are better then Stralman's very best games).
Nash said after the tampa game that he thought too many guys were shooting to shoot, instead of shooting to score. I think he's dead on, and when you see this team taking 30-40+ shots, that's exactly what they're doing.
Happy Thankgiving, everyone!!
so true about the power play. there lies the difference , if we can get a top 10 pp we are dangerous, very dangerous.
happy turkey day from venice beach fellas, MUCH THANKS TO KD AND THE BLOG I SPEND HALF MY DAY ON.
At barely above 500 it's hard to excited about this team. But I pause to be THANKFUL for the following:
- That Nash is back
- That Kreider is finally playing top six minutes in the NHL and looks great
- That Staal isn't blind
- That a rookie goalie is winning games for us
- That Brad Richards is 2x as good as last season
- That the lockout is a distant memory
- That Stralman keeps getting better
- That Ryan McDonough is Ranger property and Scott Gomez isn't
- That the Rangers powerplay is somewhat respectable
- That Derek Dorsett stands up for his teammates
- That Ryan Callahan is our captain
- That Torts is no longer the coach
Pouliot, Pyatt and Hank in the game and the Rangers win nice...... Watching here in Florida where it seemed like there were more Ranger fans and a continuous LGR chant just leads me to inevitability of the Panthers moving with their lack of success and lack of interest in developing local hockey. 20yrs and they still only have 5-6 rinks in SE Florida as opposed to somewhere like Dallas with in the same time frame and has 17 rinks.
The Rangers didn't necessarily play well but what they did do is make the Panthers pay for mistakes i.e. power play, breakdowns and shooting through screens. This is something I think has really lacked this season and if it can be done with consistency could make the difference this season.
On another note, Kevin I want to thank you for the blog and providing this fan who is out of state with much needed hockey therapy.
Everyone have a happy Thanksgiving. I will leave you with this final thought for the day. WHAT IS GOING ON WITH CALLY? Most times he is not noticeable on the ice. Seems to be out of position a lot and can't seem to receive a pass cleanly.
any chance some of these fluky goals are due to the change in pads? I feel like many of these goals are small holes that lundqvist is leaving when he goes down to face a shot from the dots
Just wanted to say thanks to kevin and the rest of the guys who run this blog. Also the fellow commentators who participate. What a great rangers community we have here. LGR
Hope everyone has a happy & safe Thanksgiving day! Be careful, don't drink & drive, and enjoy your family if you're lucky enough to be able to spend time with them. Life's too short to get all worked up over a game, so keep things in perspective…That said, thanks Kevin & crew for all your hard work on the blog, and the rest of the commenters for making this community an enjoyable one to be a part of - LGR!!
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!! I'm very grateful for this blog and all the hard work that's put into making it such a success. Also that our Rangers are blessed with a deep playoff run!! We are Rangers!!! LGR!!
Chris Kreider... the only Ranger on the list. That should speak volumes about his play
The worst thing that could have happened last night as Detroit destroyed Boston 6-1. Just what we need. Playing on the road against a team that's pissed. I agree on stralman very good and consistent this year. I know U all might kill for this but does anyone else notice that hagelin needs to be shopped? He is nothing but a bottom 6 skater brings nothing else
To the table.
I noticed the game against Bruins is very early on friday. How come? Don't you people in america need to work on friday's? lol
Ranger D has not been very good with the exception of Mcdonagh and Stralman. Stall has really regressed. To many pucks being misplayed and he seems a step slower. Wonder if the eye is causing some problems seeing the puck. Girardi still turns the puck over way too many times in his own zones with terrible passes. MDZ well I need not say anything here. John Moore, I think he is the real deal but needs to be more consistent. I think he can be the second coming of Mcdonagh. Happy Thanksgiving all.
Anyone see Zuccs stand up to Barch and Stralsy laughing at them? I was hoping he would get the Gordie.
Kevin, Stralman kind of reminds me of David Shaw (Bran Leetch's first partner with the Rangers) - he's steady but not spectacular, not very gifted offensively, and the only time you notice him is when he makes a mistake. Shaw was a bit more physical than Stralman, but the result is the same.
after their start, 13-12 is looking pretty good right now. This team has played well over the last 15. If Lundqvist regains his form this team could really go on a roll.
Its about shot quality not quantity. Anyone at any level of hockey can throw it on net. There's got to be quality and that's what they did last night.
I'll give credit where credit is due...Pyatt actually was good along the boards with some takeaways.
Oh, and Zucccccccccc.
@DubiLeetch how about the top 5 pk we have right now... thats a huge difference maker for us as well
@rangersfan92 great point, its like he was used to that ttype shot hitting his pads
@Jercooks845Thank you for your readership. It means a lot.
@DPSnotty Thank you for your readership. It means a lot.
I expect a TON from this 3rd line- especially once Nash really gets going and other teams have to focus hard on our first line. Brass and Hags could be deadly
@MYNYR4LIFE Thank you for your readership. It means a lot.
@Medvjed004 It's the day after Thanksgiving.
I agree staal too many times has pucks go off his stick leading to odd man rushes. Girardi is a to machine and slow. Trade him to his boy in Vancouver we won't resign him anyway so get smth in return. Johnny Moore shows flashes of brilliance and needs more minutes. Everyone else can go if u ask me.
We'll against Boston we had 44 shots and 40 of which we're high quality. Shots and scoring chances are not the same.
@JoeNYR Thank you for your readership. It means a lot.
@JMK8363 I wish that was the reason. I'm an old man and fell asleep on the couch. #getoffmylawn
You should have stuck with liver failure / alcohol poisoning or passing out but yeah getting old sucks! Enjoy your turkey day and thanks as always for keeping the best rangers blog going!!
@JMK8363 Thank you for your readership. It means a lot.
