This is the full Tortorella quote on that: "I'm going to coach this game, hopefully kick their ass and get outta here!" Audio coming ...— Seth Rothman (@RothmanHockey) November 30, 2013
And that's how a team is supposed to respond to a coaches' criticism...
Your new top line ladies and gentlemen... Kreider-Stepan-Nash combined for 8 points and were dominant. Vancouver had no answers for the trio.
My biggest criticism of Torts has been and will always be his treatment of Kreider for the time he was here. Kreider sticking it back to his former coach with a hat trick today was a sight to behold. It also helps having Nash on the opposite wing opens up a ton of ice for Stepan and Kreider to work their magic.
Kudos to the Rangers (mainly the top line) keeping their foot on the gas to come out to start the second with a Nash redirect goal just 17 seconds in that knocked Luongo out of the game.
We all love to give Del Zotto a hard time, but give him some credit on his power play goal to run the score to 4-0 midway through the second. Del Zotto took a couple of strides towards the net after some nifty passing work with Brassard and Zuccarello and delivered a nice, low, hard shot towards the net that beat the Canucks backup netminder with Callahan setting a screen in front.
Talbot, (35 saves) turned in another fantastic performance, stopping a number of Canucks chances in the first before Kreider took over with his pair later on. Could probably hang the first goal against on bad positioning by Stralman. Regardless, Cam never let the lights and stage of Madison Square Garden get to him and was the same calm, cool and collected goalie that he's been in his road starts.
Someone must have installed a magnet to Dan Girardi as he took a number of sticks and pucks to his body today and never missed a shift. How he manages to stay healthy is a miracle.
Only complaint to take away... Need to see more from the second line. The Rangers can't become a one line team if they want to get anywhere once the weather begins warming up in a few months. The team can get by on what happened today every now and then, but it's not sustainable long term. The Rangers really need their captain to get going and lean on him for secondary scoring as Callahan only has a goal and 2 assists in his last 11 games.
Mr. Fantasy Camp did everything he could to get under the Rangers skin once the game was well out of hand to no avail. Glad that guy is playing out west...
Boyle, please just stop with the fisticuffs.
McDonagh was his always stellar self and had a bit of an extra edge to his game today. Also tacked on an assist. Deserves Norris consideration if the points production keeps up. Good thing the Rangers signed him when they did.
Rangers 2 for 3 against the top ranked PK unit in the NHL.
On the flip side, while Daniel Sedin did get a late power play goal for Vancouver's 27th ranked power play, it came after a phantom Kreider roughing call.
The best thing you could ask for from the Rangers was coming out from last week's 5 game road trip with a winning record, which happened. Now with the Rangers playing just one road game, (in Buffalo) from now until all the way up to Christmas, its time for this team to start stringing multiple wins together and leave the .500 hockey behind them. Today's win was a great start.
The Rangers next opponent is the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night.

I wonder if Tortorella looked out on the ice and thought if i only knew these guys could make a couple of passes in a row and I was sure glad to see him TORTuring some player on some other team. The physical presence the Rangers need i think they found, they can just keep beating on teams with Boyle's face and those Vancouver guys were nothing compared with that Lucic monster they escaped from in Boston. Even though i would love to see Bieksa in NY and right handed shot no less.
I missed the fun yesterday because I was moving a friend to a new house. I watched the game last night and couldn't have been more pleased!!! The Nash Step Kreider line was clicking! In cam we trust!!!
Loving the yo-yo reaction of some on here - one minute trade hank and blow up the team and the next we've got a legit team... Part of the issue is clearly consistency and the compete level of numerous players. Thankfully some have responded to the tweaks (Zucc) while others pylon, poopsalot, and delzaster are still big question marks. Look at the difference in step and Kreider from Boston (invisible) to yesterday (dominating). I would like to try preaching a bit of patience (sacrilege I know) - we really do have a fair amount of talent this year, but they have to show up every night! It was awesome seeing Kreider finally get the monkey off his back in a huge statement game (always been a big fan and love the potential). Hopefully he can keep up the intensity and be the game changer he clearly can be, but every night!
The next issue I see is the lines after the now pretty dominant 1st line display by Kreider-step-Nash and the 4th line Boyle-Moore-pylon/Dorset (somewhat interchangeably) seem to be clicking but the 2nd and 3rd not so much and I think there needs to be some further tweaking to balance the skillets and functionality of the middle lines. Ritchie seems to be hot and cold and Cally maybe playing injured as many have suggested - he certainly hasn't looked like himself of late. Thankfully brass is showing signs of life. Maybe having better linemates could be part of that... Hags although inconsistent of late can still be a key piece on a 2nd line. I would propose a 2nd line of hags / Cally-Ritchie-Zucc (Zucc is wasted on a line without finishers) and a 3rd line of Cally/hags-brass-Dorset (good energy). I absolutely love Cally's game normally and he can clearly finish, but he in many ways is best suited for a 3rd line roll. Side note would love to see him teamed up with step on the PK - they created a lot of short handed chances last year.
Defensively Mac and stralsy are the clear leaders... G and staal have both struggled as have the bottom pair. I am not sure of what the answer is here... I love having Falk for his snarl and I think Moore has great upside, but he needs to start showing it more consistently. Let's hope that this benching lights a fire the way it did for Zucc. Delzaster is pretty clearly the odd man out currently and also the best trade value. Although he scored a nice goal and is clearly well liked on the team, his mental game is an ongoing concern and with a coach that doesn't appear to trust him he may be on his way out of town especially if mcllrath etc continue to progress.
I do believe that there is a trade in the works or will be and I hope that it's for a gritty Lucic type that will add some toughness and a scoring touch. A pure tough guy would be an absolute waste! A young injury free clowe would be ideal if we can find one since the B's aren't likely to part with Lucic anytime soon. I certainly wouldn't say no to the guy having a booming right handed bomb from the point if that option appears...
The salary cap and the poor play of veterans who can't easily be sent down and have limited if any trade value is clearly causing issues and impacting the ability to call up Haley/bicks/mash/ash for added toughness on the 4th line in the interim - none of these guys have showed that they are the answer and in reality they aren't. Not to kick a guy when he's down but as most here agree pylon and poopsalot are wasted roster spots - absolutely floored that pylon was a healthy scratch - can we hope that the mesmerizing eyes have finally lost there magic?!?
Finally as much as I love hank signing a max deal at this stage in his career would be a long term mistake - few players can still compete at this level especial goalies in their late thirties. Pay him big up front, but an 8yr deal unless it can be structured to be truly low cost low cap impact for the last 3-4 will be a mistake! No I don't want to loose him, but I don't want to sell my soul for a cup and be hampered for years to come by an albatross contract either.
Typing this much on an iPhone is a challenge and hopefully the autocorrect didn't completely change my message - thanks for reading and letting me vent!
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
Rangers did many things well offensively and they did deserve all the kudos in the world for their goal scoring. They also played a horrible game defensively with poor center ice coverage and little or no back- checking. They gave up countless 2 on 1s and 3 on 2s and a green goalie brilliantly bailed them out.
The Boston game revealed what will happen to the Rangers when the opposition plays a tough physical game.......we will wilt with the Centers we have. Step and Richards have offensive talent but cannot create ice when there is none to be had and both are soft in the defensive zone. Just watch how often Richards glides when he does not have the puck in his defensive zone. Boyle and Moore are more responsible but are limited offensively.
Could you imagine if our top two centers played "a harder-on-the puck" kind of game.......a tougher game that would open up ice for their wingers coupled with our elite defensive system......then we would be real cup contenders.
Steven Stamkos didn't start scoring goals in bunches until around his 50th game. Chris Kreider has played 43 in his career. I'm just sayin'.....LOL!
I know hank is our guy but is anyone seeing the biggest difference
His inability to handle the puck
A huge plus you can see with calm talbot
Kreider had a hard time hiding that lie,of course he had something to prove. And i feel proud as shit for THE KREIDER.
I don't see what the problem is if he chooses to go with the hot netminder Talbot The beat reporters would have a conniption but so friggin what.
Welp starting to see the same shit AV did in Vancouver that ruined that hockey team... get ready guys... its coming
Everyone loves the backup. Until he becomes the startee. Then everyone loves the backup again. Look at the jets. How did McElroy work out? Same with Talbot. He's a great backup but there is a reason he's not a NHL starter . We're not watching practice every day, we're notexperts, we don do this for a living. If you think Talbot is the long term solution to winning a Stanley Cup, you're delusional.
Which player has, over the course of the past few years, singlehandedly stolen the most wins for this team and is still in his prime?
Which player would be the most influential to a deep playoff run should he get hot at the right time?
Well duh. Hank.
Anything! I'm sure we can replace what is routinely the best player on the ice with a few Sather draft pick gems and an over-the-hill enforcer or two.
Sweet! Umm. Except for the message that getting rid of hank would send to the locker room: " yeah we don't believe in you guys short term so we're going to trade the best player on the team for...something else."
These guy play for the Stanley Cup. This year. Not three years from now. I want the best team on the ice now. That includes Hank. I can guarantee any player in that locker room would go to war with Hank right now if it was all on the line. And as a fan, having seen what this player is capable of, so would I .
So happy AV finally moved Nash to Zucc's spot - exactly what I envisioned from this trio for quite some time. If they stay healthy there's no reason this line can't be one of the tops in the league. . Other 2 top lines look good on paper even if they were quiet today.. I like these line combos better - that is until we make the trades we need to get tougher (Slats??) - we're not a well balanced team yet and will still lose more of the tight checking games then we'll will win if we keep this current roster but now at least we have a top line as well as a top goalie to build a winning team around. Speaking of goalies I'm not believing the comments I'm seeing lately on Hank - man, he went from "the world's greatest goalie" to "expendable" real fast. Really?? Even Hasek had a couple awful slumps in his career. Happens to them all. Hank will definitely be back!! Yeah Talbot looked good again but it's way too soon to throw Hank under the bus and proclaim a new king IMHO LGR
To me the bottom line is this team will play well against the softer, less physical teams and struggle against the big, tough teams (bruins, kings, ducks) Until they get bigger and nastier they can't win. period. . It's really that simple... Unfortunately, the management has NEVER realized this. Sather and his staff continue to underperform for the fan base ......13 years of his nonsense... No toughness. Wasted money on BAD free agents . No PP QB with a powerful shot. when does the revolt begin???
Loving Talbot. Remember, it's not how many spectacular saves you make, it's how few stinkers you allow. the writing is on the wall.
Hanks value will be at an all time high after the Olympics. That will be the time to pull the trigger
Oh. And one last thing. It was kinda nice to see his teammates mob DZ after he scored the PP goal. No matter how bad a NYR is playing, as long as they are wearing the blue, I'll keep rooting for them.
That even went for Tom Poti, which rooting for him was like a lesson in insanity.
At the game today.
Garden was very quiet, but didn't help that it was kids' day, which is always quiet.
Kinda irked at the Tort chants. I am not a fan of Torts, but he did some good things during his tenure and didn't really deserve the mocking. Also not like the current team is tearing it up without him as their coach. Also surprised he didn't get any positive acknowledgement from the crowd. Didn't expect a tribute (since he's clearly not in favor with NYR management) but surprised no acknowledgement from the fans.
How about that Kreider? I remember defending him on the boards for the past year (people calling him a bust, Jessiman 2.0, trade bait, etc) I watched this guy play a lot in college and the guy dominates when he's allow to play his game. The guy is a legit talent who works hard and has a solid head on his shoulders. Players like this don't come along very often.
Speaking of Kreider, that penalty he took was a legit tripping call. What was frustrating was all the non-calls on VAN around the same time.
@JMK8363 I have been thinking about the calls for toughness and ur right, a tough guy who doesn't bring anything else (penalty killing, forecheck, the occasional goal, etc.) and only occasionally does stupid shit is useless.
I would sell my soul for a cup. What would you rather have, 5 seasons of getting bounced in the 1st or 2nd round, or a cup followed by 5-6 rebuilding years? Having lived pre-1994 and all the crappy seasons post 1994, I'll take the cup
@KreiderisTheChosenOne chicken little
@CareyBrandsdorfer You're correct, we're not experts but we know when one guy is winning consistently while the other guy regardless of how good he is lets in a soft goal just about every time he plays and in the close game, it is the difference between a win or a loss . We don't care about practice but we very much care about wins and losses in the games.
@CareyBrandsdorfer play the hot goalie,no matter wwat start Talbot,Watched him for last 2 years,he won't dissapoint
@AnnoyingJoe Those were good times after Richter was done! This team was soooo good when they had Healy, Dunham, Weekes, and Markkanen between the pipes. So yea, let's get rid of a goalie in his prime who is 3rd all-time in Save percentage and top 10 in GAA so we can ride a guy with 8 games of total NHL experience. We'd have to hire Mike Milbury as GM though because he's the only one stupid enough to actually think that was a good idea.
@AnnoyingJoe @AnnoyingJoe Can you tell me why they seem to play harder for Talbot then? Oh and Hank has flashes, but has allowed allot of garbage goals this year. Yes he has carried the Rangers through the years especially during the playoffs, but this isn't a past game. Its a more of what have you done for me lately league. So please explain how he is worth the max salary max years again. Nothing like killing the growth of the team like signing Hank to max/max. Side note i love Hank and he is the best the Rangers ever had, but he will never be worth max/max. Trade while hes high or lose him this coming free agency.
@freebie23 hes done alot of good also. relax, we dont have to beat every team in hockey to win the cup. they had boston beatable in both games, they already beat the kings once, 1-0 loss , and the ducks we lostt by 1 goal as well, and if i recall had a chance to tie-win that game in msg too.
i dont think chicago is bigger or tougher then boston and they won the cup. just a better HOCKEY team
@shoot_the_goalie Personally hoping MDZ can be moved as soon as possible but it did make me feel good about being Ranger fan to see his teammates really being happy for him.
@Hotfreak NYR need to get back Oli Jokinen. Maybe Nik Antropov and Nik Zherdev as well. Those three would be the NYR "Legion of Doom" line.
@Hotfreak from the netminder out
I remember the 94' cup run too and would love to see the cup in NY, but I want a competitive team and the ability to be a contender for years not blow my load on one run without any guarantees of a cup that would put us in disarray for years! Why can't we learn from Detroit and build from within and then if we have to bring in the final puzzle piece - not build a team of rentals and high prices has beens looking for one last chance at a cup... The Ritchie's aren't the answer - Kreider and the young guys are! I respectfully disagree with your philosophy on burdening the team for a decade with ridiculous contracts and relegating up to being buffalo for years to achieve it, but I completely understand the desire to see the cup in NY this year!!! Oh and thank you for taking the time to read my diatribe and commenting - I always appreciate your insight and comments on the blog! LGR!!!
@IcyCup Cuz when you worry your face will frown, and that will bring everybody down. So don't worry, be happy.
I think hanks contract is all about jockeying for money. I don't think he has any interest in leaving ny and I don't think any trade would improve the team so significantly. You also haven't fully tested talbot, so be careful what you wish for.
@GiveGartneraCup not that I'm aware of. When Torts' name was announced as VAN coach, no reaction, positive or negative. Chants of "Tort-a-rell-a" started around Krieder hat trick.
If you're 15, I withdraw my criticisms of you. Sorry, that may be big language for you. You seem slow. If you're young I'll stop picking on you. Just let me know.
@mlsranger thats why we ride him now whiles hehot, and hank as rental could get us a top6 and a 1st
Agreed. NYR have a tendency to cheat more offensively (especially d-men) when hank is in net cause they know he can bail them out most of the time. And in terms of bad goals this year...you're gonna give up more bad goals when your defensive coverage is shifting and out of place, which has happened with this team changing coaches. I like what I've seen from Talbot this far but let us see him for more than a season before we claim him as Hanks heir apparent.
The reason for the chant was because Kreider was always in torts' dog house for taking penalties and such and for him to score a hatrick in this game, it was very satisfying. The topper would have been a Richards goal as well.
Ya. I heard that chant. He should have been applauded when he was announced. No matter how it ended, he did a great job while he was here.
