As if I haven't inundated you guys with enough Michael Del Zotto trade rumors the last few weeks, Darren Dreger at TSN is now reporting that not only is Glen Sather receiving calls on the embattled defenseman, he's also making some.
Not shockingly, Larry Brooks at the New York Post has jumped all over this Del Zotto trade talk frenzy by noting the Rangers haven’t received an offer that has piqued their interest yet.
Brooks confirmed that while the Rangers aren’t necessarily dangling Del Zotto, they’re definitely taking calls on him.
According to rumors, five to six teams have inquired about Del Zotto including the Ottawa Senators.
And if the Rangers are looking to move Del Zotto someone better tell Alain Vigneault he needs to brush up on his sales pitch...
“A player like Michael has to play to his strengths,” Vigneault said. “I’ve been told his strengths are his ability to beat the forecheck, join the rush, help out on the power play and get shots through.
“I have not seen that on a consistent enough basis to say he is going to be in the lineup every day. Some other ‘D’ can have an off-night and you’re going to throw them back in, but Michael, in the 20-odd games I’ve been here, hasn’t shown that consistently enough. As far as what I’ve seen, he’s fighting for one of the top six spots. I’ve been told that Michael Del Zotto is a much better player than I’ve seen so far. We’ll see how he responds and go from there.”
...man, get a muzzle on that guy before there are no interested teams left. With all the criticisms coming from AV, I'm not sure if Del Zotto's value goes down more when he's on the ice or off it. Actually, with this kind of talk, you have to wonder if the Rangers are really looking to move him at all. I mean how many teams not only bad mouth an asset they're trying to move, but make him a healthy scratch for three straight games? Not exactly the smartest strategy.
...despite the Rangers fans distaste for Del Zotto, there's definitely some interest around the league for a puck moving defenseman such as him. The best case scenario would be if a bidding war broke out for the 23-year old's services. Could end up being another Sather trade special.
...having said all that, there is legit concern that the Rangers could be giving up on the young defenseman too early. Blueliners always take longer to develop and there's no denying Del Zotto has the skill set to be a very productive offensive defenseman. And would there be anything worse than trading him away only to see him become one of the premiere power play point men in the league? (See Zubov) Although, Del Zotto has now been in the NHL for five years and his game has not progressed. He's been given ample opportunity and ice time over that time and continues to make the same mistakes. Very frustrating.
Del Zotto is expected to return to the Rangers lineup tonight in Dallas.
The best thing to happen to Mike Del Zotto is to be traded. This kid has been in the NHL for five years coming in at 19. This kid proved that he can play in the NHL. Coach Tortarella down played everything that he did. MDZ had a bust out year in 2011-2012. On more than one occassion let the league in plus minus that season. Will always be in the shadow of DG, MS and RM. You cannot play this game without believing in yourself knowing that Sather is looking to make a move. When you have a 500 coaching staff you are going to have a 500 Hockey Team. When you cannot recognize a talent you have no business coaching in the NHL. This kid has hit a lot of bumps in the road but he manages to stay focused. MDZ will never become the player he is capable of if he stays in New York and is constanlty being Micro Managed.
And you'd think 3 games out would light a fire under his ass. Comes back in and looks as shitty as ever. At this rate Hartford wouldn't want him. He is bad.
have to disagree with all the talk about AV hurting DZ's trade value. if you read his actual quote, he says that DZ is a better d-man than AV has seen during the first quarter of the season. in other words, he is a good player that has not lived up to expectations. another way to read that: perhaps a change of scenery or different coaching staff could get him to realize expectations. underachieving players get traded all the time for their potential, why do people feel the circumstance is different here? i'm not necessarily on the DZ hate train and would just as soon give him more time to show more of the flashes we've seen intermittently over the past few years, but i also dont have a problem with AV's handling of this situation at all.
MDZ has been trying to force it for years. The more he feels like he has something to prove, the more he tries to be Bobby Orr. Benching him compounds the problem it seems. At a certain point, it's fair to say he has low hockey IQ and to move on.
He's a giant puss. Never have I seen someone look over their shoulder so much when going for the puck. The kid is afraid of his own shadow. It's disgusting to watch. That and the fact he's a turnover machine, horrible defenseman and couldn't hit the back of a barn door with a shot let alone a 4x6 goal!
Sadly I like what MDZ can bring to the game, but if they gave up on him and he turned into a stud offensive dman..there is no way NYR can be blamed.
Zubov lead the damn team in scoring the year they WON THE FNG CUP...not lead dmen in scoring the whole damn team!!!!! I hate Neil Smith for that trade and rangers havent had a PP QB since!!! Yes that trade bothers me and MDZ traded would not compare to that awful move!!!!
I also do not think MDZ will or is learning. I mean to say he did not deserve more then one game benching shows me he is not watching the same game I am. Rangers have given up 3 total goals since he has been out and the defensive play is better. WAKE UP MDZ and take your medicine and learn, play responsible you will play.
I think the Rangers are not shopping Del Zotto as actively as everyone is saying and think they are doing all this to burn a fire under his ass. Maybe? A possibilty? I mean if the right deal comes along any one of the Rangers could be traded, barring a few exceptions. So Sather is taking calls on MDZ. Im sure he gets calls for other players too. Big whoop. Why else would AV be saying the shit he is saying about Del Zotto like Kevin said? Why bad mouth the player you're trying to "actively" trade? Smells fishy and I know fish. Im not saying they wouldn't trade him either. Anything is possible. Personally, call me crazy, but I like MDZ. Guess he still needs more time.
can you blame him? Del zaster has regressed every year since his rookie season. The kid is an absolute bust. He can't Play defense which was always evident but his So called title of being a pure "offensive d-man" is so very much comical. I want this POS off the team. He is a liability out there. Bring up someone will do their job whether it be a stay at home clear the crease dman like Mclarth or who ever because at this point, i would rather have Dale Purinton who in his defense did actually do his job of fighting and tried to be intimidating over this Disaster we call DEL ZASTER!!! So I applaud Vigneault for speaking the truth about the some of the garbage not pulling their weight on this team.
"Del Zotto has now been in the NHL for five years and his game has not progressed. He's been given ample opportunity and ice time over that time and continues to make the same mistakes."
That's it in a nutshell. No guarantees in life. Gotta dump him imho.
As far as AV goes, I agree with you. Now is not the time for the truth to be put out there in the media regarding MDZ. Seems a little counter intuitive.
The only thing is what do we get for him. A forward? We have an ample supply now. Clearly we will not be getting a top six because we have no room there. And even if we throw someone out to the bottom six like I see the victim being Zucc, I feel we would have to waive Pyatt or sit him constantly. Send down Miller and probably include Pouliot in the trade. We would want someone left with 1-2 years left max on the contract with all the players we need to resign in the offseason. Idk its just me saying let him play with McD to gain the safety net experience so he can try to be more consistent.
I'm pretty sure all of the other team's scouts and GMs know exactly what DZ's misgivings are. So, AV is pretty much just stating the obvious. He falls into the category of a player with unfulfilled potential (like many other players). The real question is, does another team want to take a chance that he will raise his game to the level of his potential? If they do, we have a deal. If not, he's ours to keep and hope he gets his game together.
I think Sather is looking to move him but AV is a moron and not helping the situation. Seriously, I'm amazed this guy has been a head coach for so many years lol. As for the rumors, I can't wait till Brooks tries to trade Callahan or Lundqvist cause you know it's coming.
LeBrun had mentioned the Sens were one of the teams interested in him. Read an interesting take on that yesterday. Apparently the Sens currently have more left D than the Rangers do so why would they be looking for another one? It's clear DZ can't play on the right....or doesn't play well there. Think it's something to look at when teams pop up as rumored to be looking at him. Also something to keep in mind - other than Nash, when has there been rumors about a trade Sather is making before it happens? With him, when there's smoke it means trade cancelled lol.
@carylev I don't know. My perception is that AV is saying that he's hearing Del Zotto is better than what he's showing but he's not seeing it.
@Ryan_Heda Hopefully being a healthy scratch the last few games is a wakeup call for him.
@giammarcor Not bad Bob. From the new league leader....lol
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) I doubt there is anything there that AV has said that teams around the league don't know. Even if he didn't say anything, the fact that he was a healthy scratch for 3 games may have been a hint.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) The Sens do have more left D than right, but they also have the premier puck moving R Dman in the league with Karlsson. The rest of their D are all stay at home defensemen. I mentioned earlier that Eric Gryba would be a nice catch for us in a trade. Big R shot Dman who will drop the gloves, gives us depth on the right side, and will not see a lot of ice time playing behind Karlsson in Ottawa.
@Melissa (blknblueshirts) Great insight. Thanks!
@Kevin DeLury @carylev i think we're saying the same thing here kevin. my only disagreement with your assertion is that i dont think AV's statement is killing DZ's trade value as much as others (not just you) seem to think. AV seems to be a pretty thoughtful guy, i doubt he's doing anything to undermine his/slat's long term plans here. maybe we get lucky and DZ responds and makes this whole discussion moot? hey, stranger things have happened!
@PuckCentral He does shoot wide more than any player Ive ever seen since my birth in 1970. But just imagine if he started hitting that 4 x 6! Deadly.
@boogiepicker I agree with that. I was just venting about AV because I haven't been impressed lol
@MikeBlue @Melissa (blknblueshirts) I like Gryba. He reminds me of Brooks Orpik from the Pens, except he's a righty. I wonder if he has a ceiling like Orpick, haven't seem him play enough to offer an opinion. That's the kind of DMAN they need to add. Tough doesn't have to equal fighting majors. I'd move MDZ if we could get Gryba & a pick (2nd -3rd) I'd be happy.
@MikeBlue That would be great if the Sens are offering him. My guess is they aren't since it sounded like they want more right Dmen not give one away.
