When the Rangers drafted Dylan McIlrath with their first pick in 2010, they were hoping he'd develop into a crease clearing defenseman that they so sorely needed. The last thing I'm sure they expected was any kind of offense, but this season McIlrath has shown a knack for finding the back of the net as he scored his third goal in just 11 games during the Wolfpack's 3-2 shootout loss to Springfield last night (00:21 mark)...
...from reports coming out of Hartford, McIlrath has improved in all aspects of his game. From positioning to skating and now to scoring, the rugged defenseman is making a case that he might be ready for the NHL.
...and with the way Del Zotto and Stralman have struggled this season, there just might be an opening for him real soon. Especially with the Rangers to likely to send their only real enforcer in Mashinter back to the press box or the AHL (tear) once Callahan and Moore are healthy.
...the Rangers have finally started standing up for each other as evidenced by actions of Richards and Dorsett recently, but having a guy like McIlrath in the line-up will ensure that if a skilled player gets so much as sneezed on there will be hell to pay. And who knows, maybe he'll score a couple of goals along the way as well.
The New York Rangers Blog- u seem to know hockey so u know it always takes longer for D to develop. i do believe they need to use DZ better on the power play and let him just shot on the PP. When was the last time outside of McD PP goal in LI have u seen our Dman take slapshot from the point?
That was three years ago and still not much improvement. I agree with you, but how long do you wait for him to finally develop?
Really love how McIlrath has been progressing in Hartford. The three goals come as no surprise to me because he's always had an underrated shooting ability, but still nice to see. His whole game has improved dramatically but I still don't think he should be anywhere near the NHL roster right now. If he was brought in for a game or two to fill in for an injury then I think he'd hold his own, but otherwise he should remain in Hartford and polish his game. He still makes the occasional poor decision and is still somewhat raw. I think next season he'll really challenge for an NHL spot.
The New York Rangers Blog- If the team needs toughness, the first person that should have be removed from lineup is Taylor Pyatt. I commented on your post over the summer that the team should have put him on waivers and used that 1.5-2m to sign Brandon Morrow. Look at Brassard scored vs Sabres the other night, with a body in front of the net.. Exactly what Morrow would have bought to the team along with leadership and grit. DZ still is young- still needs time but by no means do you give up a young puck moving d-man with good offensive potential. If the team didnt believe in DZ, they would have taken Folwer that year we took "Undertaker"
Jeff Hu, in a perfect world you're 100% correct. But Del Zotto has been bad and team needs toughness when Mashinter goes back to press box when Rangers get healthy. Next three games are huge litmus test for this team.
Hey Kevin, are you making an article about, how the whole Caps bench were watching Emery beating the shit out of Holtby ?
I know this has nothing to do with NYR !
BTW cant wait for Mcllarth.
If MacIlrath can play at NHL level well and as well as Falk, MDZ. then bring him up and let him play.He is needed on this team going forward and solves a lot of problems.
And yes I'm sure u and everyone else want to remove MDZ from lineup BUT the team is coming around right now.. Stralman will be gone next year (expansion draft) so spot will become open. For now the Undertaker needs to keep learning the game and the best place for that is with the Wolfpack
Can't wait - let delzaster sit a few and give the kid a chance - a solid heavyweight on the blueline will be awesome!!!
@Herman_NYRBlog Come on man, he's 21 and still not in the NHL. Total bust! Don't you know anything? :sarcastic smiley:
@JoeNYR Sorry no article on that. It was goalie on goalie. Very rarely do you see other players step in. See Cloutier beat down on Salo. Having said that, if Emery was pounding on Hank I'd hope someone would step in.
I hate that he said holtby didn't have a choice in whether the fight happened or not. That's freaking assault anywhere else! I would hope he'd have enough respect for hank not to do that to him. If he did I hope dorsett would kill him!
