As time was winding down with the Rangers clinging to a 4-3 lead last night, Scottie Upshall began taking liberties with Derek Stepan and apparently Chris Kreider didn't like it...
...absolutely horrific time to take a penalty, but guess what? I don't care. It's about time this team started sticking up for one another. Those are the kind of penalties that Kreider's teammates need to dig down deep and kill off, which they obviously did. It's also the kind of play that shows this team is forming some chemistry and sense of unity. Call me a meat head, but I loved it. I am glad to hear Kreider apologized to his teammates after the game, but I've got a feeling no one on the team needed one.
According to Pro Hockey Talk, Kreider will not be suspended.
...good to here. Just because Kreider is stronger than Upshall doesn't mean he should be penalized additionally for it.
At this stage of the season, when the team is trying to form an identity it's fine and in fact beneficial, and thank goodness it didn't cost them a point but if he pulls that crap in March he should get his head examine - or fined!!! (or at least subjected to the icy stare of Sam Rosen lol)
I'm with rich, dangerous area to hit him but I'm sure Kreids wasn't expecting him to take off like an airplane.
So now we got "Captain America" and "The Hulk" on our team. All we need now is Iron Man and Thor.
There is a time and place for stuff like that.. Good to see him stick up for Step but not with under 2 minutes to go in 1 goal game
I know the timing for that penalty was not good but I am so happy that someone on the team had the balls to step up and intervene on behalf of a teammate who was being taken advantage of. Rangers need to more of this and stop being so passive when it comes to protection. Hey Girardi. This is how you take care of business.
It doesn't even look like a cross check. It was a low hit, both hands on the stick, but he hit him with his hands.
Upshall's a sack of shit and I couldn't be happier Kreider destroyed him. I hated the timing but MAN I am so sick of people cheapshotting Stepan, it had to stop.
I Love it! ... for all the reasons everybody's already stated. Kreider is a beast. If Florida wanted to try and respond and take a run at him, I bet it wouldn't go too well for them.
We could still use a legit tough guy, but this is the kind of thing we need to see from more of our guys in the meantime.
Upshall is such a childish little girl. Look at this move he pulled on Gudas a few weeks ago:
you don't apologize for sticking up for your team mates. i've noticed a bit more of it lately but not where it needs to be. one of these days kreider's going to have to get in a tussle, as far as i'm concerned the sooner the better, it'll give him more space. i did notice that at the end of the game also.
I dont think he really meant to toss him that far. Kreider was probably a little suprised that Upshall went flying back that hard. But we all agree, although bad timing, we all liked the fact that they are backing each other. :)
did anyone else notice that the penalty box guy held Kreider up for a minute at the buzzer and waited to open the door. Looked like they were cautious about Florida making a run at him when he came out of the box and they were both looking down Florida's end. The cameras cut away to Hank and the celebration though and I didn't see anymore, Anyone at the game notice this? Was anyone on Florida eyeballing him or saying something to make the box guy hold him up?
Like I said, I loved the hit and hope Kreider doesn't let the timing affect his confidence that has been growing of late. His teammates should say "yeah, dumb penalty" and then pat him on the butt and say "way to go".
Man I wish Joe Micheletti would just shut up, and go away. Bring Dave Maloney into the booth with Sam. That should have been the no brainer call a few years back. They can still fix the mistake of bringing in an Islander guy. Never too late to do the right thing.
Kreider is a powerhouse, kid's got way more strength than most people realize. Ever see his dead lift youtube clip?
Dude is a beast who doesn't know his own strength. I'm with you, I thought it was great. Good sign that the team is gelling...
Loved it !!!!! Gotta stand up for your teammates. Like Maloney said in the postgame, kid has serious strength and doesn't even know it yet. Upshall was blasted!
Damn strait bro ! Thats the immediate responce we need on this team . Good job Chris . Ill take those 2 min anyday .
Don't care about the penalty, and don't care about the timing. Hockey players for years have said that if you take a penalty sticking up for a teammate, the team has no problem killing off the 2 minutes.
My one comment would be that Kreider needs to learn how to hit in the new NHL. Thats a dangerous hit, could have been much worse, and definitely could have warranted a suspension. A few feet over, Upshall's head could have caught the door, or missed and caught the floor of the bench. Kreider needs to learn you can't shove guys 4-6 feet from the boards. You need to follow the guy after impact, carry, and put the guy into the bench like Cally and McD have been doing.
PS. How about that BS charging call on Kreider earlier in the game?? I guess I'm not clear on how what he did crossed the line of finishing a check...
@shoot_the_goalie If Hagelin were bigger he could be Thor, definitely has the hair. Prust with his "It's Just Pain" line was probably the closest to Ironman.
@lennynyr That's what I've seen reported.
@AG_Blue If anything, it should have been a roughing penalty, as the puck was nowhere near the play. But no cross check from what I saw.
@rogo117 I actually think that's sort of funny.
@CinciMike As I said last night, good for kreider for standing up for a teammate, but I hope upshall doesn't retaliate when they play each other in florida (nov 27)
@CinciMike Yep, noticed that too. They didn't show it, but I assume they were waiting for Florida to leave the ice, just in case.
Penalty worth killing, thats why Girardi blocked like two shots. The penalty was standing up for Stepan.
@eric1940 Totally agree. I don't like Micheletti either. Way to big a homer. I really like Maloney. He calls it like he sees it. Good or bad for the Rangers.
@johnnyb3910 I totally agree. I LOVE the fact that Kreids stuck up for Step. But that seriously is a crazy, dangerous hit. I don't think Kreids meant for Upshall to fall like that but still. Again, not criticizing him for sticking up for his mates. I love that he did. I don't mind him taking a penalty for it either. What I don't like is the nature of that particular hit.
The charging call, in my opinion, was a good call. He jumped and came off his feet; got some pretty good air, too. He didn't take strides toward the Florida player, and he actually glided in. But he definitely launched himself.
@Kevin DeLury Just a mention---there was a goalie fight and multiple guys fighting in the Hartford game over the weekend. Footage is up on hockeyfights.com
