During last night's episode of TSN's Insider Trading (H/T Spector's Hockey), Darren Dreger reported that that at least five or six teams have inquired about trade scenarios for Michael Del Zotto.
Pierre LeBrun of ESPN added that one of the teams interested could be the Ottawa Senators who are in the market for a puck moving defenseman and Del Zotto is on their radar.
...this is the third Del Zotto trade rumor in the last few weeks, so you have to assume where there's smoke there's fire.
...if Ottawa is in fact interested in Del Zotto, one guy the Rangers should absolutely look into obtaining is Milan Michalek. While he's had a tough time scoring this season (3g), he had 40 goals just two years ago and would be a nice fit on the left wing. One warning sign with Michalek is that he missed almost all of last season with a knee injury, although, he did score five points (3g, 2a) in 10 postseason games last year.
...the 28-year old Michalek is in the final year of his contract which pays him $4.33M this season, so the Rangers would have to make some room to bring him in (waive Pouliot & Pyatt?). I also don't think Ottawa would do a one-for-one for Del Zotto, so the Rangers might also have to give up a pick and/or prospect, which could be too steep for a player who could bolt this offseason.
...another Sens player who the Rangers might be able to do a one- for-one for is Chris Neil. I think he brings an attitude this team is missing and his addition could give the Rangers the same spark the Sean Avery trade did back in 2007.
All this about chris Niel is true, and I seem to remember him giving the rangers fits in the playoffs 2 years ago. I'd love to see him on this team and if it was a 1 for 1 it wouldn't bother me. I'd trade DZ for a Neil-like player any day. The perception of playing this team would change so drastically.
Go big or go home...DelZotto and Hank for Anderson and Karlsson. Maybe throw in Miller just to make up for MDZ's lowered value. Make it happen Glen ;-)
I'd like to see Chris Neil on NYR. I was fortunate enough to play on his team in a charity hockey game in Yellowknife during the lock out and can see why his teammates like him. He reminds me a lot of Avery, but is a good teammate. However, I think Del Zotto is worth more than just Chris Neil. I'd like to see Cody Ceci, Mark Stone, Pageau or MIka Zibanejad come to the Rangers!
Lots of good comments OK you all convinced me to Neil. Hate him too but he is too old. We need a good D and anyone who can finish. All our chips are in the AHL. I like DMZ so I hope he can get his head out of his ass and play with Kreiders gusto with better hands
Would absolutely LOVE Neil. But Ottawa would never give him up. Plus his contract is locked in until 2030 or some crazy shit like that
if we want falk then trade mdz for a 1st round draft pick. edmonton, buffalo, florida will all pick in top 10 next year
they are keeping him. it was a benching to wake him up, you dont scratch a guy 3 games when your trying to trade him. 5 teams inquired becuase they think we gave up on him and probably want to get him on the cheap. no thanks, he has more value then anyhing in return
Chris Neil who once threw Derek Boogaard's blood onto the Rangers' bench? No thank you; I'd never accept him as a Ranger. Ever.
Chris Neil? Are you fucking kidding me? The guy is a scumbag piece of shit and you wanna put him in blue? Ass.
Trade a young, inconsistent D-man for a former 40-goal scorer prone to injury? Ask Columbus how that has turned out. Pass on Ottawa. More intriguing trade partner is Edmonton, but even there, I'd hate to give up a good prospect or draft pick as part of the package. Bottom line -- I wouldn't hit the panic button to do a deal for MDZ right now.
No way on Michalek, he's more injury prone than Gaborik. Neil would be interesting, but I would want a pick/prospect coming with him as well. The one player from OTT who I would be interested in is Cowan. Zibenajad too, but I don't think they are giving up on him yet.
If they gave us a PUCK signed by a 34 year old it still would be better than keeping that 23 year old around.
From the Beatwriters on Twitter, DZ is back in the line-up tomorrow against Dallas.
Can you say "Showcase"? Hope we can find out which scouts are in attendance, too.
I love your blog. I love reading updates and your opinion and the opinion of others. I almost dropped all interest when you said CHRIS NEIL......I hate him. He leaves the ice almost every game with some issue or other. I would sign MDZ to a multi year contract before I ever brought that idiot onto the Rangers.
Who wants a 34 year old for a 23 year old? This team needs a heavyweight in the worst way. But not for a young dman.
One player I'm insanely interested in is Mika Zibanejad. He's 20 years old, in 64 career NHL games he has 26 points. On this season he's played 13 games and has five points. In three games against us last season he had three points and I just remember he was solid and pretty annoying. He'd also fit right in with our centers, winning only 48% of his limited amount of faceoffs. He hits a bit, he doesn't block many shots, but I think he could be a solid addition to the team and for the future.
Honestly I think Del Zotto's days with the Rangers are numbered but am I missing something here? Dreger and Lebrun said 5-6 teams asked about Del Zotto. No one has said the Rangers said he was available. I'm sure teams call and ask about Lundqvist and Callahan every day. Doesn't mean they are being traded. I'm just trying to figure out why this rumor has people saying he's being traded today.
As for Ottawa, I could be wrong, but doubt they move Michalek. And if they do, I wouldn't be surprised if he was allowed to pick his location in which case it would be no where near NY. (His brother is in Phoenix.) As for Neil...I don't care if we need that type of player. I don't think I could ever root for him so please no. I believe they have excess D on their roster so maybe a swap for one of those (not named Karlsson)?
Why is MDZ getting benched. If you want to trade him, you NEED to get him out there as much as possible. This is his contract year
Seriously though could MDZ turn it around & get his head out of his butt? Does anyone have an example of a guy like MDZ at his age who did? I can't think of one off top o' my head...
Thats the thing Mdz isnt moving the puck . He is auful in both ends . You are giving up a 23 yr old yes but may be a bust in ny .
Thank god u will never be GM!!! Both players u mentioned are garbage if having to offer a 23yr old puck moving D... U hold onto DZ...
@gravey94 Flat out crazy talk.
@gravey94 Shame on you Gravy,I expected more from than suggest trading Hank. I hope you were just kidding.
@DubiLeetch Would be nice, but I don't think Florida or Buffalo are looking to lose draft picks, they're looking to gain them. Would imagine Edmonton is in the same boat, but they may be more interested in an NHL ready player.
@DubiLeetch I agree with that, I think believe it or not MDZ might have been the difference last night. He does bring a certain element to the game NYR seem to be missing right now.
@DubiLeetch Yup, I think you're right.
@TruBluEsp Kids got a load of talent, no way the Sens are moving him.
@CJ Exactly. He's the kind of guy you hate on another team, but love on yours. Are you telling me you weren't saying the same thing about Avery before he came to the Rangers?
@kerrycherone My bad. lol. I don't know. I like the agitating style he brings to the table. I guess we all have our vices.
@JoshKaye Need to send over a lot more than Del Zotto to get him.
@Kevin DeLury No he's a dirty prick, who not only looks like a giant baby (seriously look at him, it's fucking creepy), but cries like one as well, always with the complaining at the refs. He lacks the charisma, creativity and intelligence that set Sean Avery apart and made him so likable, to his fans and teammates. Even his detractors had to accept his talent for what he did, but that's not the case with Chris Neil. When you take away those qualities all you have left is an ugly fucktard who concussed Boyle in the middle of the playoffs. There is no room in our lineup for a player like that, and frankly I am little surprised that you don't completely agree.
@rangermom That's a great point.
@CJ @Kevin DeLury Avery was so despised around the league that NO ONE wanted him despite the fact that he was a good player who could skate, score and agitate, so not sure where you are getting the likable to his teammates things. The team in Dallas basically ran him out of town. I don't know anything about Chris Neil as a person, but as a hockey player, he brings a lot to the table and adds an element the Rangers have lacked. Also know nothing about his contact, health or age, so minor details.
