The New York Rangers (6-8-0) lost to the Anaheim Ducks (12-3-1) by the score of 2-1, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...as has been the case all year, lack of scoring killed this team tonight. Sather needs to start looking for scoring help and he needs to start looking now. Great defensive effort that was undone by two horrific turnovers. Team showed heart in the second half of the third period, but it was too little, too late. Need to have that hunger and aggressiveness from the opening faceoff.
...Richards might say that he's more comfortable at center, but his game has gone in the toilet since being moved off the wing and back to his nature position for the Islanders game. Easily his worst game of the season. Let's hope Richards didn't blow his load the first week of the season and this is what we're going to be subjected to for the remainder of the year.
...hurry up Sather, trade Del Zotto while his value is high.
...hoped the return of the Rangers captain would have given the team a bigger lift.
...what was Vigneault saying about Pouliot "going to the moon" sometimes the other day? Looks like that's where he was when he negated that late Rangers power play with a careless high sticking penalty.
...if AV only has the confidence to play Mashinter two minutes, why would he put him in the line-up over Miller? It seems like AV benches him every time he gets into a fight or mixes it up with someone. I just don't get it.
...since the refs obviously aren't going to call anything, teams will continue taking cheap shots on the Rangers until they start standing up for themselves. Stepan took two shots to the chin tonight without even so much as a dirty look from a Rangers teammate. Where is this team's balls?
...when teams are able to neutralize the Rangers speed coming through the neutral zone, they really have nothing. Kreider and Hagelin can't combine for zero shots of goal if this team has any chance of winning.
...so great watching AV hold onto Dorsett for dear life so he didn't do anything stupid when McDonagh hit Perry into the Rangers bench. I guess he's starting to get to know his players.
...don't want to hear anyone criticize Hank for that second goal. Palmieri absolutely shelved that thing under the bar.
...credit to reader Annoying Joe for figuring out how Pyatt somehow remains in the line-up...
...man those eyes are mesmerizing.
...obviously a much better effort against the Ducks this time around, but the Rangers should have been able to jump all over a road weary Anaheim team playing their last game of an eight-game, 15 day road trip.
...rookie goaltender shutting down the Rangers? Didn't see that coming.
...doesn't get any easier for the Rangers as the Penguins come to town on Wednesday.
Post game interviews...
...what was Vigneault saying about Pouliot "going to the moon"sometimes the other day? Looks like that's where he was when he negated that late Rangers power play with a careless high sticking penalty.
...and on 2 or 3 offsides calls during the PP...and on that terrible breakaway attempt....should we keep going?
I'm semi OK with last night's loss. I see progress from the start of the season. Yes, they obviously need to score more. That's a given. What frustrates me more is the continued inability of some players to make a simple pass and taking it a step further, controlling a pass on their sticks. It's amazing to me how many times I see passes bounce off Rangers players sticks.
It wasnt a bad game. should have won, stupid turn overs and a rookie goalie are the things that lost us the game. losing to the 2nd best team by one and out shooting them isnt the worst thing to happen
anyone talking about the shot(s) to the head that stepan took, any word on a league review, i know these hits went un-penalized and unanswered...what else is new?
Seems like all the PP can do is take point shots? Is that the game plan or just lack of being able to get the puck down low? Seems like after the 4th or 5th point shot you should try something else.
Sick of seeing this team start off periods flat. What the hell do they need to get motivated! did anyone else notice that AV kept adjusting lines like Torts use to? I thought he was mixing guys up way too much. Keep Boyle w/ Mash and Dorsett and actually play Mash! WTF! Put richards back on the wing. give these guys time to adjust n gel together.
kreiderman - steph - zuccs
hags - brassard - cally
richards - miller - pouliot
mash - boyle - dorsett
MacTruck shoved Corey twice to the Ranger bench :D
Last night was the first time this season that we desperately missed Rick Nash... You can't tell me we don't score in that third period with him on the ice. Even if he doesn't score he opens up the ice for everyone else. This scares me because we played a good game last night, but we may not be able to beat great teams like Anaheim, Pittsburgh, Boston, Chicago, etc. without Nash. And I don't think he is coming back any time soon :(
true john, the ducks dished out some nasty hits that were not retaliated for,bad for morale when your talent guys get lumped up and nobody seems to care or do anything about it
Overall not horrible, but the lacsidasical starts have to stop they need to establish confidence early. The lack of effort, and desire was almost palpable. The two quick goals set them back on their heels. The guys need to hit and be aggressive. The speed guys were noticeably quiet overall and without them opening things up we weren't able to sustain much pressure. Kreider was too quiet - his speed and hitting are what opens the ice and allows Zucc and step to set up plays. Ritchie has been quiet the last few games - may need to go back to wing or at least avoid the rotating linemates. Brass needs to get out if his funk and pouliot needs to remove his head from his rectum. Pylon... What can I say I understand wanting a big body, but his play makes Boyle look tough after the Neal hit two years ago!
Dump and chase dump and chase dump and chase. Only worked for a few shifts in the second during the long change. We didn't adjust our offense. We'd dump and their D would already be deep in the zone. They trapped us in neutral ice and we never adjusted.
I don't have as negative a view of this game as others. It was a 2-1 game against the #1 team in the league. They scored 1 goal against a goalie that came into the game 3-0 with a sub 1.5 GAA and a Save % approaching .950. Sorry, a low scoring game was to be expected in this one. The did get 33 shots off at him and probably close to that number that were blocked. Seriously, the Duck had a TON of blocked shots. The Rangers did play an uneven game. When they got their forecheck going, they looked fantastic. When they tried to make cutsie plays, they got into trouble. Brassard's giveaway was ridiculous. I didn't think Richards' was all that bad. The Duck picked it off just over center and skated in unscathed with 3 Rangers in the zone. It was bad D and a perfect shot more than a Richards gaffe. I liked the bounceback from the 1st ten minutes. The start of the 3rd was bad, but I liked the bounceback there as well. Pouliot killed them with that stupid-ass penalty. I really felt they were going to steal at least a point there. Still, not a terrible game against the top team. Looking forward to Wednesday's game! BTW, fs2020 mentioned it below but the fact that Messier and Lowe were there is very curious indeed. I just hope it doesn't mean they are looking at Yakupov. That would be a bad mistake!
Hags, Stepan, Kreider, Dorsett Callahan playing good all around no worries with them.
But Staal has to play better, get to the level he was at last year.Richards should get back on wing if he's gonna revert. Brassard-whats with him-he was finding his game last year now not much-he's gotta get back to his game. Zuccs is a playmaker-but he has to finish-.Hank has to boost his play even more-worried a little bit but Talbot is solid backup.
Certainly room for improvement.Have to tighten up somewhat, stop any sloppy plays and turnovers, and win more puck battles one on one. Most of all, finish, finish finish.
Why does Pierre McGuire sweat any team that plays the Rangers? Certainly the Ducks outplayed the Rangers and are a better team but the Duck-love was a little much.
This was a perfect example of how inferior the Rangers are compare to contending teams. It will be a miracle if they make the playoffs just to be once and done.
Same stuff every year. High expectations at the beginning and a big letdown as the season continue.
Time to shake up the front office and bring back J.D. to run the hockey operation..
First goal not happy, can't leave anyone open in front of net, especially Cory Perry.. 2nd goal was perfect shot... Part of the game
Av hit it on the nose...been saying it for years.....No offense from our Deemen...maybe now they'll do something about it
2 things that baffle me about this team is how there always seems to be 2 men defending one guy, which in a man to man defense usually means a lack of communication; and how Stall is not on the Powerplay, he looked beast during the pre-season and early season and somehow lost his spot to McD who doesnt shot on the powerplay
Wonder who Lowe and Messier were there for. Girardi?.MDZ? If we trade one of them we might be able to bring up McIlrath or Johnson for the duration and then just build wit them and Connor Allen.
Could get a lot for either MDZ or Girardi.
the first 10 minutes of that game, the rangers got steam rolled by a team that's been on the road for 2 weeks, not good.they picked up the pace,but...
Pyatt. Please just ask to be sent to Hartford this guy was a 20 goal score once oh guess what for Vancouver under av guess what av he's terrible do the right thing !
Everyone is all over Richards for his blind pass, but that looked like a Gretzky pass compared to what Brassard did that led to Anaheim's first goal. That was a pass you see in youth hockey.
also i know miller struggled in CAR but fricken pyatt shoulda been scratched over him. id like to see cally and him play together.theres no good reason for him to be sent down over pyatt. id like for him to stay up and play and learn the game that way. obviously hes a rookie and growing pains are the inevitable but hes good enough to stay up here and try to mesh with these players better than pyatt is.
ps: FFFFFFFFFF pyatt
i know its eklund but he was talking about the avs and rangers talking about a trade or something along those lines. have you guys gone over that already?
Went to the game tonight and a few observations:
-the new scoreboard is pretty sick. Chase bridges...eh, nothing special.
-from what I can tell, the reason we make goalies look so good is that there is absolutely no traffic or bodies in front of the net when we shoot. The only NYR I saw getting in the goalies face was Kreider, and that's it. The NYR might have gotten off a lot of shots, but ANH defense just steps aside so that Anderson can see the puck all the way, and any NHL caliber goalie is going to stop 99% of the shots he can see clearly.
-Kreider is faster than Hags. In fact, Kreider was the fastest guy on the ice tonight. Also, Zucc looks smaller live than on tv.
-DelZotto's best game of the year, and he was still mediocre. Often out of position. Just because he scored a goal and made a few nice rushes does not absolve his poor positioning and choices. However, there is hope. It looks more like it's an issue of being indecisive versus not having skill. Maybe he just needs a confidence boost.
-That too many men penalty they took at the end was just idiotic and unfocused. Hank didn't know whether to stay on or off, some coaches waving, others holding up stop signs. No one was on the same page on that play and it hurt their chances in the end. (along with the Pouliot penalty)
With that said, was nice to be back in the Garden to watch a live game.
Just saw on NHl network mactavish is looking to add a few defenseman to edmonton. I can see DelZotto going there, i hate saying give him a chance because hes been in the league a few years and he makes alot of stupid plays but he does have alot of talent hes just not the smartest guy, maybe its starting to come together now. Rather not trade him
Lucky ducklings tonight.. It's a game of bounces.. And the kid in goal got the bounces his way tonight.. Kevin!!
Looking at the box score... shocked that Hagelin only got 13 minutes, and Richards got 20... guess AV didn't notice how poor Richards game has been. Going forward Hags needs more ice time, he should be getting 16+ every single night... he is a spark for our team
The team looked pretty good tonight, At least the effort was there and we played more physical. When the opponents try to cancel our speed we need to go over to a stronger forecheck which we failed to do. Still not adaptable enough yet. We played good enough to beat a top ( albeit tired) team but a couple bad plays and bad luck and poor officiating cost us. MDZ played his best game this year, and got rewarded. Dorsett played a good game and may have been our best forward. They have to find a way to be stronger in their own end. Goalie played very well when he had to but not enough sustained pressure. We're better now, not elite yet.
@Bukra! plus the guys up front just stand there. There is very little movement on the pp to free up some ice and create better passing lanes.
@Bukra! I'm fine with ripping shots from the point, but in order for that to be successful, you need 1) a guy who can rip bombs quickly from the point, 2) guys who quickly pass to the bomb from the point so they can shoot before the lane is closed off, and 3) guys who stand in front of the goalie to make it hard for the goalie to see the bombs coming at them.
NYR do not have any of those components right now.
@gravey94 The Ducks were excellent at clogging up the shooting lanes. I mean, really excellent. Every time you thought the NYR had a chance to shoot, shooting lane got closed off by ANA defense.
@capncally1978 Absolutely on the money with your comment re; McGuire. He is so bush league. Never calls out defensive gaffes, instead turns them into "elite plays" by the offensive team. He once called The Flyers-Pens playoff series as one of the greatest playoffs in NHL history! (atrocious defense and even more atrocious goal-tending)
Last night he told Duck fans to start appreciating their team and start paying money to watch them play.....brilliant Pierre.....now go collect your check from Mary Bettman!
@pkh33 WHAT?I don't think you'd describe a bad giveaway as a "Gretzky pass". two wrongs don't make a right. both were bone headed plays.
@shoot_the_goalie Not good to hear about the coaching confusions (1 guy waving, 1 guy giving stop). You'd think out of every one in the building, the 3 guys behind the bench would be the most coordinated in tense moments since they're the brains behind the planning. I can see why Hank look frustrated when they panned to him.
@shoot_the_goalie Good call. Lot's of bad angle shots too. Lots of bad cycling that resulted in give aways or terrible shots that were easily gobbled up by no name goalie or Duck defense. Felt like last year.
painful watching MDZ make rushes up ice that led to no shot or a mile wide wrist shot. Kid's a mess. What happened to the power play? No big point shot means no one is scared to challenge and block. Richards shoots so slow!
@KreiderisTheChosenOne Hags was actually not very good tonight. (neither was Richie for that matter). Hags was really struggling tonight, especially defensively and along the boards.
@Betweentheworlds Don't think we will be elite with this personnel, unfortunately. I think we are seeing what this team is, which is about a middle of the pack team. Getting Nash back (if we get him back) will help, but it's not going to be putting the NYR into top tier territory either.
@AveryYesBettmanNo Richards' pass was outside the zone. While still a crappy pass, it was lightyears better than Brassard's pass deep in the zone and directly in front of the net. On the Stupidity Scale, Brassard gets a 9.5 and Richards gets a 7.
In fairness to the coaches, it all happened very quick. It was clear they wanted him to come off at some point, but they just weren't coordinated as to when. Still no excuse. Mental error.
I mean, the 5 skaters were on for quite some time w/ Hank (5-6 secs), and say what you will about the refs, I think they only called the penalty cause after that much time, they had no other choice. I think they would have let it go if it was a shorter gaffe.
@AveryYesBettmanNo @shoot_the_goalie I will give ANA credit though. I was sitting behind the goal, and it's much easier to see shooting lanes from that angle than the standard TV angle. And I gotta tell you, ANH was giving the NYR nothing. All the shooting lanes were clogged up, even on the NYR PPs. Shots were just not getting through.
@AveryYesBettmanNo @shoot_the_goalie At least Richie shoots faster than Step. I like Step's game, but he should not be a shooter on a PP setup cause his release is so slow. The NYR need guys who can rocket shots off the pass from the mid-high circles on the PP (think Ovechkin) and Step and Zucc are not the answer. This is one area where we miss Gabby a lot.
@Paulie Gualtieri good riddance to MDZ. just don't trade him for nothing.
Agreed. We must make trades and/or give some kids a chance. Richey's looked awful at center. Maybe give Lindberg a shot and a couple others and move him to wing. Defensively we looked pretty good other then the ridiculous give aways but I only saw 4 legit scoring chances, and some looked like better chances then they were, like when Zucc was set up in front. Pass was telegraphed and goalie had time to cut off the angles on him. MDZ looked good but on TV you don't see enough and if you were at the Garden and saw him out of position a lot I believe you. Still think it was his best game.
@Betweentheworlds I'm confused....are we so bad that all we have to do is compare if one Ranger turnover was worse than the other? Ridiculous. Both were turnovers - both were bad regardless if a goal resulted or not. But they did end in goals. Richards killed a breakout by throwing a terrible weak backhand pass FROM HIS OWN END right to the Ducks. It resulted in the second Ducks goal. Shit happens, but no way thats acceptable from any Ranger especially a veteran.
Yeah, if they didn't score nobody even remembers Richey's error. Brassard's was ridiculous however and regardless of the results he should have sat a shift to think about it, watch and collect himself. AV's got to hold his players more accountable when they make a class A blunder!
@Betweentheworlds Richie actually made some nice defensive plays, but offensively (and the turnover) he had a rough game.
DZ. He just seems to be in the wrong place, and he gets caught up ice a lot. But you could tell that his offensive struggles are a huge weight on him right now judging from the reaction he had after scoring the goal.
