After two days of listening to the Capitals cry about the officiating in their first round loss to the Rangers, John Tortorella apparently has had enough as he made this statement after practice today (via Daily News)...
“We’ve got everybody and their brother whining out there in Washington about what happened in that series and I think that’s a big reason they lose that series.”
Tortorella was referring to this Alex Ovechkin comment to Russian media (via Pro Hockey Talk)...
“Not saying there was a phone call, but they wanted Game 7. For ratings. You know, lockout, escrow, league must make profit.”
Today Capitals GM George McPhee added that while he didn't feel their was a conspiracy by the league he said the officiating "didn't feel right." Per the Washington Time’s Stephen Whyno, McPhee also said he spoke to the league about the officiating during the series, but to no avail.
And here's more...
#Caps' Fehr: "I have a few thoughts in my head, but they're not very good ones, so I'm not going to say them." went on about G3 penalties.— Stephen Whyno (@SWhyno) May 15, 2013
...absolutely nothing worse than a team blaming the officiating. Especially a day after getting buried 5-0 in a Game 7 in their own building.
...apparently Ovechkin is forgetting about the non-call on his blatant board of McDonagh in the first period in Game 7. And maybe McPhee should be criticizing his team for their lack of discipline instead of wondering why the Rangers, who were the least penalized team in the regular season, were not being sent to the box.
...and seriously, how much did the additional penalties really help the Rangers? They were 2-for-28 on the power play in the series. And it's not like the Caps were taking advantage of their opportunities as they were just 3-for-16 with the man advantage.
...great job by Torts calling the Caps out and not letting them get away with this.
It's been said a million times but this clearly shows that it's a lack of accountability that keeps the Caps down. I really didn't expect that their whining after game 6 would convert into a sloppy game 7 effort.
I thought better of them.
what did the refs have to do with OvenChicken scoring 0 points in last 5 games? that was rhetorical. NOTHING
I was at Game 5 and I commented to my friends that the fans were crying the whole game. Like they felt the world was against them and that was what they enjoyed about the game. Crying.
Rangers 5. Capitals 0. That lopsided score says it all and it makes any excuse about penalties superfluous. The loss is on the Caps. They were gassed in my opinion.Rangers were fresher.
Caps are definitely whining.
I had respect for the Caps organization until now. Fuck them all. Whiny bitches. That pus Ovi will never see a cup in his shitty career.
Kevin, the 5-0 lose is why they are whining about the offcicials. They are trying to defllect attention from their own putrid performance. U also forgot to mention the non call on Alzner & the non call on Riberio when Boyle retaliated. What a disgrace. This is an organization that is 2-8 all time in Game-7's at home in a league that the home team wins 75% of homme game-7's!!!! Maybe McPhee should show some leadership & call out his so called Capt. for his lack of hustle on Stepans GWG in Game-4, which u so deftly pointed out Kevin instead of whining about the officials...Again...what disgrace!!!!
I'd llke to hear Ovie's thoughts on his inability to play defense and or back check. Who's he got to blame for that? This guy's not worthy of the "C" on his jersey... he's just looks like an idiot making those kind of statements. Enjoy the links guy.
Hey ovie, stay on your feet and dont board people... Then u can complain! And what torts said... Not like it helped us anyway... 5-0 on home ice... Either way you still lost moron! Caps suck but who cares there golfing and were still playing... Ovie will play harder for russia now than he did with the caps anyway!
They can blame the officiating all they want. They had a game 7 in their building and showed up for the first 5 minutes!!!! Also, this is just their GM trying to grasp for strings to hang on to his job....
Are they serious?? How many obvious penalties did they get away with over the course of the series, and how many did they manage to sell for us? God forbid they admit to just losing control of their discipline in game 7 (because from what I saw that's exactly what happened). And for Ovechkin to even imply that we bought the refs in Game 7 is just slimeball bullshit. I swear, I used to be a huge fan of his, but he's turned into such a colossal jerk in the last few years...
I DO think the officiating was horrid in the series overall, but I don't believe for a second that it favored the Rangers - I'm pretty aware of that kind of stuff because I can't stand the thought of anyone being able to point to referee-assistance as a factor in our ability to win games.
This is the best take-down I've seen of the Caps, by WaPo sports columnist Thomas Boswell. It's a must-read: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/capitals/washington-capitals-playoff-exit-a-tradition-thats-getting-old/2013/05/14/cfb91b26-bcbc-11e2-97d4-a479289a31f9_story.html
So the Caps strategy for Game 7 then was to suck at even strength and score on assumed Power Plays? Nice work Oates! Not surprising you never hoisted The Cup, nor will your glorified baby of a captain!
Me too I loved McPhee when he played here. He was a brawler who would take on guys twice his size & he had a little bit of talent as well. He was similar to Prust. He should know better then to make excuses.
@Josh6 they r now2-8 all time in Game-7's at home in a league that the home team wins 75% of home game-7's. Maybe that iis a conspiracy as well.
@erichan How bout in Game-6 when the Rangers were dominating the officials let about 5-6 Cap penalties go!!!!
@rangermom that was a must read. Thanks!
@rangermom Ferh: "They want to sit in the box and block shots. We couldn’t get a lead and get them out of their shell. Lundqvist made a few saves here and there. But their defense made the saves for them.”
@rangermom This is amazing. There is nothing more refreshing that a rational sports fan.
@rangermom Lundqvist made a few saves?
@erichan Oh, and I love the photo accompanying the article -- looks like Ovie got knocked out by Girardi's hand on his shoulder.
