In a surprising development before last night's 4-3 Rangers victory over the Capitals to tie the series at 2-2, Marc Staal (eye) was a late scratch.
In his post game interview, Ryan McDonagh told Rick Carpiniello at the Journal News that after skating at the morning optional, Staal pulled himself from the line-up upon arriving at MSG for the game.
Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record says the reason Staal did not play in the final two games of the regular season was that after his eye appeared to be better, he had a setback before it again improved enough for him to play in Game 3.
...i guess it could be possible that his eye was acting up again. Or maybe he just didn't feel very confident and/or comfortable on the ice Monday night because, to be honest, he sure didn't look it.
...either way, with Del Zotto's poor postseason play and now Torts' unwillingness to let Eminger fight through a mistake, Staal is needed more than ever. Hope this isn't a long term thing.
the question is where is Nash? other then using his strength with the puck, his star hasn't showed up. fkin cally is the man, all aspects, that guy shows up to play.
He's been playing with heart, pfffffttt. Seriously? What has playing with heart gotten him? 3 goals on the season. This is the same player that was supposed to be the PP quarterback. How did that work out? Zero goals on the PP this season. Hey, I have a good idea for him-the next time he's skating up the ice with the puck he should skate parallel with the blue line so he can draw his teammates off-sides. Oh wait, he already does that.
Again, I can't agree with that... He's been great # 3/ 4-D and taken on extra responsibility with Staal being out
Not hating. Just pointing out he has struggled. Just because you're playing hard, doesn't mean you're playing well.
I'm worried about Staal. Suspect that he is not going to be ready to play from a confidence perspective until his vision improves (and it may not). At a minimum I would expect he needs more time to adjust to the vision loss which may translate to next season. At this point I'm just hoping he can recover for next season. Anything he gives us this year will be a bonus. Also, wonder if Staal would benefit from less minutes to start with. Torts does not baby a player into the line up. Either they are ready to play as much as he wants them to or they should not be in the game. This may be part of why he chose to be out last night.
If Stralman continues his mature play, and with Moore and McDonagh playing well and Danny G being steady -this team can definitely beat the Caps. MDZ is having troubles which he has to repair if Rangers win this series and go on to the next .Otherwise next year with Staal back and McIlrath ready to start an NHL season-MDZ could be trade bait.Get on it MDZ!
MDZ has been a liability every time he's on the ice. You can see he's making wrong decisions, gets caught out of position, absolutely no consistency to his game right now. Stralman on the other hand has been fabulous. He made a play late that negated a 2 on 1 that could have saved the game. Takes the body well along the boards. Moore has definitely supplanted him as the rushing, power play specialist. I realize Emminger overplayed the puck that lead to the 2nd goal, but MDZ was slip-sliding all over the ice. Should have benched MDZ after that. The shame of it is we were building a great young D, but the injuries to Sauer and this set-back to Staal have put that on hold. Imagine a group of Girardi, McDonough, Sauer, Moore, Staal, and Stralman? Pretty damn good. Unfortunately don't think we'll ever see it.
Why is it always our guys getting hurt? Why can't Mike Fuckin Green get hurt? Its always our guys!!!!
like I said that mistake no doubt. no room for that at all. what they need to do is not give up that goal that goes in after a semi comfy lead, but that was all season. it's exciting and heart wrenching hockey..love it..love the blog..
Maybe it's just me, but I thought Eminger looked totally overmatched all game last night, even before his give-away. He looked slow and very indecisive/scared. I don't think Torts lost confidence in him, I just think he realized that he was not ready to play last night and couldn't risk him being out there. Moore's play is digging a pretty deep hole for MDZ and now MDZ seems like he's putting together his own coffin! Playoffs are definitely not MDZ's strong point. Stepan seems to have exercised his demons, not it's MDZ's turn if he really is what we all hoped he would be after his rookie season.
I'd take a less than 100% Staal over Del Zaster after how he's played the last 2 nights. Hell, I'd suit up Dave Maloney.
Nothing would please me more than to see a healthy Marc Staal on the ice. On the other hand, I don't want to see him get hurt further because of Tort's idiocy, either. Eminger has played well overall. Geez, everyone makes mistakes. Torts should bench himself for all of the mistakes he has made this year. MDZ has looked lost out there at times, sure. But a healthy MDZ still is better than putting Staal in a dangerous position. JMHO.
I think the giveaway right in front of the net is what made him rethink the decision to play. He looked fine after the big hit so hopefully he'll be back soon.
I call for DZ's head all the time. It's a joke between a few of us that regardless of if he is on the ice, it's his fault... simply because so often it actually does have to do with a mistake he made. That said, I'm a big believer in his upside but I think they are handling him wrong. He is not ready to be the PP QB or a top 4 D-man and hopefully with Staal eventually getting healthy and Moore continuing to play well, he and Moore can have some friendly compentition. Either that or we trade him while other teams still think he's great (?). Right now, he is just not mentally ready. If he has around 10-12 mins of ice time, I think we all love him again. But what has he been getting pre-John Moore breakout? 18-20? Just not using him properly.
I have never been a Del Zotto hater. Yes he makes some of the worst mistakes I have ever seen a pro make, but he also makes some sensational plays and overall I have felt the good outweighs the bad. However, this last few weeks and this series especially, I'm starting to feel differently. I really starting to feel that he's just never going to "get it". At the very least, I'm doubtful he'll ever be a consistent player in NY. IMO, he's big-time trade bait over the summer.
@Dminches What's even worse is when you consider how avoidable it all is. Just wear a fucking visor. I still can't believe Girardi, among others, is still out there without one. How effing stupid are these guys?
@gravey94 I have been thinking the same thing that Moore's play has shook up MDZ. If so he has to get over it cause he was awful last night. First he misplayed the 2 on 1 then he made it worse by fallling down so it became a 2 on none. He looked like a 12 yr old flailing around. Then late in the the 3rd when Torts shows confidence in him, he pinches gets caught & Ward almost scored. How can u pinch in a one goal game w-3-minutes left in the 3rd? he has to know bette than that. He is not an 18 year old rookie anymore. MDZ looked great in last years playoffs. I didn't think we could go deep in the playoffs w-out Staal but if we have any chance we need last years MDZ
now let's not get carried away. Luckily for Maloney there were no message baords, etc back in his day or what we say about DelZotto would have been nothing compared to Maloney. He was more of a disaster than DelZotto, hands down.
@CareyBrandsdorfer Might be better if it was physical. If it is a lack of confidence we may not see the Mark Staal we want in there.
@rangersfan The probelm is MDZ has been visibly bad in the playoffs. GMs take note of whats going on, and he's certainly hurt his trade stock thus far. He's never going to be a good NHL defenseman, and the nice breakout pass he makes every 4-5 periods is completely negated by his defensive liability. He's not even "good" on the powerplay. I'd trade him for a 2nd rounder happily.
Moore makes DZ expendable. Mac Girardi staal and Moore as well as Stralman are as good a top 5 as there is. Mcilrath will be our 6th dman next year. Skjej is coming too. DZ has been really bad, that first caps goal shoulda never happened.
@Lordstanleybroadway I agree that Moore's addition bumps DZ further down the depth chart. McD, Moore and Staal all play the same side as DZ too. At the very least, it makes sense to trade DZ for a right-handed defenseman. I'm not so high on McIlrath. Hope I'm wrong.
@rangersfan Especially on a team where they are taught to jump in front of any shot.
I believe the league is going to do that. But from an organizational stand point, if I were GM, I wouldn't sign these guys to multi-million dollar contract without requiring then to wear a visor. It's protecting your investment pure and simple. If the players won't do it, then the contract offer goes down
Comment indicated that Moore made DZ expendable not McIlrath. McIlrath is a 6 d man to clear the crease for hank.
