I'm always going to feel confident about the Rangers winning no matter what, but after seeing the Capitals more concerned about a phantom slew foot than getting ready for a Game 7, I'm feeling better than ever.
Washington's Mike Green took an embarrassingly undisciplined penalty in the third period when he cross checked Derek Dorsett in the mouth after he thought the Rangers agitator kicked out his skates from behind. Unfortunately for Green and the Capitals, the referee saw what everyone else did—Dorsett lost his balance and both his legs kicked up as the players crashed into the boards...
Apparently, the Capitals players didn't see the above video, especially at the 1:22 mark showing there was absolutely no attempt at a slew foot before making these statements...
Braden Holtby (via Washington Post)...
“The one that we all had a problem with, obviously, was the one on Greenie. That’s a play that should be reviewed. It’s only because Greenie’s world-class, one of the best skaters in the world, that he didn’t fall on his back there. It’s a dirty slew foot and we’re short-handed from it. That’s the only one I think any of us have a problem with.”
Capitals Head Coach Adam Oates...
“That play to me is the one that does concern me because it looked like a slew foot to me and obviously that’s why Mike reacted,” Oates said. “Mike’s not that type of player, and you’re watching it, to me it looks like a slew foot. Very dangerous play. Greenie’s one of those guys that they want to target, but to me, that’s a very dangerous play.”
...hey Adam, maybe you should worry more about your high flying offense not scoring than blaming others for why you didn't win.
...and the Rangers didn't even score on the ensuing power play, so who cares. At the very least it would have evened things up anyway and it's not like the Capitals were dominant five-on-five last night.
Eric Fehr also accused Dorsett of diving on the Green cross check to the face.
...the guy takes a two-handed cross check to the teeth and is accused of diving? Talk about grasping for anything. If anyone should be complaining it's Dorsett. The guy is bleeding from the mouth and Green only gets two minutes? Not that the Rangers would have scored on a double minor or five minute major.
...i'm pretty sure Caps fans would rather see Fehr focusing on improving on his ZERO points in the series than making excuses for his teammate.
Here's Dorsett's response...
“When I get moving my feet and playing hard, sometimes it can get under the skin of other guys. Anytime I can do that, I want to try and help get the team on the power play.”
...loving Dorsett's grinding, in-your-face style. Which is something the Rangers were sorely lacking this season and with Clowe injured is going to be that much more important for the Rangers if they want to make any noise in the playoffs. I expect him to be a huge factor in Game 7.
...if the Capitals are more concerned about this irrelevant play than a crucial Game 7 then the Rangers have already won.

The Capitals have one of the dumbest GM's in sports. Remember, George McPhee wanted to "Win the Cup NOW" so he traded a talented 21 year old forward with size and skill (Phillip Forsberg) to the Predtors for a 31 year old retread (Martin Erat) who hasn't scored even 20 goals in the last three seasons. I noticed that ever since this team went from the run-and-gun style that allowed then to score 313 goals under Bruce Boudreau in 2009 to a more defensive-minded approach, they don't score. Or if they score they don't defend well. That's because this team lacks two-way players (See the Pittsburgh Penguins who have a roster FULL of themfor a good example...)The Capitals need a new GM and a different roster mix. Without either change this team will NEVER win a Stanley Cup--I don't care who's coaching them. (They've had THREE coaches in as many years, haven't they?)
Caps should consider themselves lucky the refs were looking right at Riberio when he blantantly tripped Dorsett & they didn't call it. God I hope we r up 6-0 tonight & that little oward Riberio finds himself on the ice w-Dorsett. God it would be great to see that little shithead get the beating he has coming to him!!!!
I gree & have been saying the same thing all day, if they are focusing on the officials its a sign they are unraveling. They have already shown over & over that they have lost their poise. BTW did anybody see the clip of when Dorsett was skating off the ice w-blood dripping & Riberio blatantly tripped him? NBC showed it not sure if it was shown anywhere else, so they got no right to complain. Meanwhile they were fine w-the officiating Alzner shot the puck in the stands & nothing was called or when they called boyle for that retaliatinon penalty. The whole organization is whining & thats good for us. The Rangers have control of this series they just have to come out & execute tonight & the Caps will fall. It was the same way in Game-5. You could see the way the Caps started they were ready to go but we couldn't get that 2nd goal if they would have they would have won. Or if Boyle doesn't take that stupid penalty i am convinced we would have won 1-0 then finished them yesterday alot easier then 1-0. Bottomline is teams that aspire to win a Cup close out teams when they are frustrated & reeling, I have seen the Rangers on the bad end of that many times. Against the Isles twice in the 80's, the Habs in 86, the Caps in 88 & 89, Pens in 92 Flyers in 95 & 97. The Caps a few years ago. Its on the Rangers now & if this team is what we all hope it is they will win tnite 3-1!!!!!!
After watching it again...from my experience....Dorsett attempted a slew-foot...but could not get his shoulder in front of Green's shoulder to get the leverage needed to push Green backwards to complete it.
Dorsett is not a well liked player. He has a bit of a reputation. I'm not surprised. This is what agitators do..they agitate.
I'm sure Dorsett will use this to his advantage tonight. Caps are already angry with him....if I'm Dorsett..first shift...fan the flames. Get a glove in someone's face...go up a little high on a check....give an extra whack to Holtby if he stops the puck...etc. Make the Caps focus on me.
If this is what they are talking about they have already lost! Sounds like they are making excuses for another early exit, and a non-existent Ovechkin. I told so many people he only scores on the PP, on wide open back doors. He got 13 or so goals doing that. I believe! LGR!
Speaking of Slew Foots - this one courtesy of Ovechkin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0QGStjCKRw
And you know what, this one was pretty similar to yesterday, and I don't think this one by Ovechkin is a proper slew foot either. Again, we need to ask Malkin for how its properly done!
Someone else said this, but Dorsett has some Avery in him. Hopfully the good stuff, and not the bad. Some Essa Tikanen. An agitator would be a huge add for this team.
I would have loved watching Dorsett pounding someone's head, but I'm glad he kept his cool because we kept the edge, the momentum, and leave them frustrated.
This makes me laugh. The Caps negated two odd-man rushes for us by hooking the player off the puck last night.....no calls. Nash has been tripped and slashed when he beat the last defender this series....no calls. Tonight will be no different. Play through everything! LGR!!
Respect for the comment from the person who has actually played hockey before. If you want to see a proper slew foot I'm sure there's an Evgeni Malkin How To Video on the subject somewhere out there.
Has anybody heard anything regarding clowe? Man that would be a big boost if he could come back, especially with they way game 6 ended.
As someone who has been on the receiving end of a slew foot, I can tell you that Dorsett's was definitely NOT a slew foot. He had no leverage on Green whatsoever and in order to slew foot you need to have your shoulder in front of the other player's shoulder so you can push back while your foot pushes forward. Besides, from the little I've seen of Dorsett, he looks like he just goes balls out all the time and is constantly falling off balance. Caps are just looking for a rally point. Any chance the Rangers could give us a multiple goals lead for once tonight ;-)
I agree it was a blatant cheap shot by Green, but there is no doubt that Dorsett tried to and failed to slew-foot him. Hence, that's why it was "phantom"...because he missed. Of course, that doesn't give Green the right to take out his dentures, but the attempt was definitely there.
All of this will be irrelevant when they hit the ice tonight. Oates isn't going to let them lose their discipline. That said I imagine the Caps being all angry and yelling to each other about it for a solid ten minutes when they hit the locker room.
Relax Caps, this isn't the Hershey Bears!
Everyone in the league checks the guy by riding him into the boards with his back leg. That's eactly what Dorsett was doing until he got knocked of balance.
Sidenote: Alan May of CSN was ripping the refs and said MDZ hit Perrault from behind face first into the glass. I mean, SERIOUSLY?!? Bunch of whiners.
Liking this guy more and more. Dorsett's got alittle Avery in him, I like how he plays. Hopefully he draws some attention tonight and can get us on the powerplay again.. and more importantly, hope our PP can find the back of the net. LGR!! Epic game last night, wow!
oh, and every time i see Mike Green i just think of this:
Let them whine, let them complain, let them fall into the trap. Spend all Game 7 preoccupied with Dorsett instead of trying to win. Fine by me...
@ThrSage Ribeiro is such a puss, it's disgraceful.
@McPhee37 Maybe it was a slew foot but here is the point I made to some Caps fans on their blogs. Being a formmer player u will relate to this. Why r the Caps whining? Green settled it on the ice...he crosschecked him in the face, got his penalty Caps killed it so move on. In fact Dorsett got the worst of the collision so if he did try to slew foot him he failed miserably, then got crosschecked in the face & then got tripped while bloody going to the bench. Messier always used to say "no complaining about cheap shots in this room, we settle it on the ice" In fact Mess used to say if there were no officialst there would be no cheap shots cause guys would fear the retaliation they would get.
@Josh6 Hey Josh this on Nash from Blueshirt Banter....I've seen a lot of media talk about Rick Nash's wrist being badly injured. I'm starting to buy those claims. He made a really big impact on Game 6, regardless, but he's simply not shooting the puck the way he did in the regular season and that doesn't make any sense. This has nothing to do with the bright lights, something is wrong. Still, he played really well Sunday, so hopefully there's more of that despite the injury.
sometimes there is more to the story...
@jasonshyer I still remember screaming wildly at my TV that shift Malkin had where he slewfooted 2 players on one shift in the 2008 playoffs.
@gravey94 Nobody is saying it WAS a slew-foot. The Caps are arguing that he tried and failed to do one. I agree, no where does he actually do it.
@PenaltySh0t or when Riberio cheap shoyted Boyle the other night or when Riberio tripped Dorsett or when Riberio was throwing punches at the back of cally's head. of course once he turned around he all of a sudden stopped punching
@MarcWeissman If that was a try at a slew-foot then he needs to go to whatever school Crosby and Malkin went to for lessens. After watching the videos posted to this thread I see very little similarity between the plays. He was not in any kind of position to attempt a slew-foot so if he was trying he was doomed to failure from the beginning :)
@MarcWeissman I don't see where you honestly get he tried. He's coming from behind, and he falls, both of his feet are on the ice UNTIL he falls, he never attempts to kick his feet out until he actually loses his balance.
@Iron Mike Oh yeah, THAT'S a ringing endorsement. Don't insult Derek. :(
@johnnyb3910 I laughed so loudly at this, 2 people had to close their office doors. Well played, Rupper. Well played.
He got called for a cross check not high sticking. Only high sticking gets the double minor for drawing blood.
@ThrSage This, this, this. 1000 times this.
@ThrSage Interesting. I'd been wondering if he was nursing an injury because he just didn't seem to be the same player that he had been. This would definitely make sense.
@ignots69 They must work on that in practice...
@PenaltySh0t @MarcWeissman I disagree. You can clearly see on the last replay that, as he is falling, Derek is trying to swing his left leg under Green's. He just missed. Had Green's legs been closer together, he would've completed it. But like I said, still gives Green no right to "Dave Brown" Dorsett right across the jaw. No way!
@Jbianco If an accidental high stick can draw blood and resukt in a 4 minute penalty, then an intentional stick to the mouth that draws blood should be equal to or greater than that punishment.
@Jbianco no crosschecking would as well.
@MarcWeissman @PenaltySh0t well obviously his legs are going to do a wild split when he falls, I wouldn't be able to keep them together if I fell like that. And is it me but I feel like there was absolutely no way Dorsett could've hit either heel the way he was going down, in fact it was such a wild miss I really think he just lost his balance.
@pkh33 Actually, Rule 59.3 DOES allow for a major, so it should've been called. And fwiw, "blood" drawing has never been in the actual rule book for any call. Just one of those understood things, and it should've applied here. No idea why.
@pkh33 Yeah, I was thinking that as well when it happened. Basically, b/c they decided to call it a cross-check, the major/blood call is not an option. Who the heck says a cross-check can't draw blood? So stupid. It should be for ANY stick-related foul, plain and simple. :(
From what I can tell from the NHL rules, only 4 types of penalties can result in a double-minor. High sticking is one of them but cross checking is not. http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26544
It seems like there should be a blanket "if you draw blood" rule, but that doesnt appear to be the case.
