During his time on Broadway, there was certainly no love lost between fan favorite Sean Avery and John Tortorella. It was tumultuous at best and didn't end well. When news broke Wednesday that Torts had been dismissed as Rangers' head coach, there may have not been a happier guy than Avery.
Larry Brooks of the NY Post caught up with Avery to get his thoughts on the surprising move:
“Oh, I had a huge smile on my face, no question about it,” Avery told The Post yesterday. “It’s not that I’m happy for myself. I’m happy for the Rangers and Ranger fans.
“When I was a Ranger, no one was happier to walk into the Garden every day than me. I loved the team. I still do. I want the atmosphere to be the best it can be for the players. I want everyone in New York to be proud of the team. That’s why I felt the way I did [on Wednesday] and that’s why I sent that tweet.”
Here's the tweet Avery was referring to:
Avery claims to hold no bitterness towards Tortorella. In fact, Avery believes the mercurial coach is responsible for the new career path he's on.
“I said the day I came back to the Rangers that Tortorella was going to be the best thing for me in my career. Well, he was the worst thing ever that could have happened to my hockey career but the best thing that ever happened to my life.”
- Avery's words at the time were strong and out of left field. A lot felt he was saying what the players couldn't say. Others felt it was just Avery mouthing off, trying to stir up controversy. Who would've thought two months later that Avery spoke the unfiltered truth.
- You wonder if the cracks in the locker room started early last season with how Avery was unceremoniously jettisoned off the team. Torts never allowed Avery to be Avery and it's no secret top players like Henrik Lundqvist and Brad Richards are close friends with the agitator.
- Very interesting locker room dynamics. Very interesting.
I finally finished reading that article (really hated to give that rag of a newspaper the hits). Avery said "I," "me," or "my" 40 times. 40 TIMES. Sad, sad man. And Brooks is just a king size douche for doing it. How anyone can take him seriously ever again is beyond me.
Of course Avery is bitter. He ran into the unmovable object that was John Tortorella. Avery was attempting to market himself as a 'bad boy" and fan favorite. But Torts can only see his players in a one dimensional way and would not buy into his shtick. Unfortunately for Rangers fans, his play incorporated snarl and grit and like him or not, heart. The loss of Avery, Dubinsky and Prust left a huge hole in the nasty, kick your ass department. Clearly viewed throughout the Boston series. And the way he mishandled Kreider?
A new Rangers coach has to find the middle between 'players coach' and well...Torts. This is New York, the players should always be treated like pro athletes but they need to understand the responsibilities that playing here entails. Not every player has the same skill set, and of course their strengths vary. Torts felt every player should be mucking the puck out of the corner rather than the guys with hands go to the net and the guys who are going to win the battles getting them the puck. And shouldn't there be the ability to adjust to the opposition's strengths? Torts could not modify the system, it was what it was. Remember, except for game two, the Boston games were all close. But with out assessment and adjustment, nothing changes.
I hate Craig Carton, but I agree with him when he said the Rangers are a bunch of nice guys with a bad coach. Yes, the press asks annoying questions, but that is there job. Whether it is the guy telling us to take off our shoes at the airport or the cop pulling you over for talking on a cell phone, everyone has a job to do and should be treated with respect. He had no right to speak to those people as he did. He was a daily embarrassment to a very proud organization.
What will the next coach bring, that is up to Sather....
"who wouldve thought two months later that avery spoke the unfiltered truth?"
LOTS of people. avery isnt a liar. he's the opposite. he speaks the truth and doesnt package it or pretty it up.
whatever anyone's personal feelings are towards avery are completely irrelevant to any of this. they just arent relevant.
and guess what? HE WAS RIGHT. what's so hard to believe in any of this?
Its so easy to pile on now. Avery is just stirring the pot. I wonder why Dallas couldn't wait to dump him? Hes a bitter washed up has been. Go back to the fashion district where you belong.
A lot of crazy stuff going on and we don't quite know the real story. Mostly conjecture all around. I'm really not sure what to say at this point. I'm enjoying the conversation. Mostly I'm just here handing out a bunch of "Likes."
as much as I loved avery I kinda wish he'd go away. either go away or come out of retirement and add some fun to our 4th line.
Funny how none of the players have any comments about Torts. Where is the Captain? He has no comment about this? Brooks reaches out to an ex-Ranger for comments. I would like to hear from some of these players. Brooks should reach out to them.
You should have named this post the Bozo-Clarabell-Crusty saga...One clown putting down another clown being documented by a 3rd clown!
You know what's shocking that NOBODY ever brings up about poor wittle Seany-boy. His demotion to the minors was supposedly all about Torts not liking him because he made a comment on TV once. And now Avery is lashing back at Torts because it was his choice to demote him. Now come back to present day. We're supposed to believe that sitting Brad Richards for 2 elimination games was an "organizational decision" but demoting Sean Avery at the beginning of a season was solely a Torts decision? How come Avery doesn't have bad words to say about Sather or Dolan. Seems to me that the "grudge" is being held by someone not names John Tortorella.
Avery is irrelevant to hockey anymore and should just go away and be the next Zoolander! He's more suited to be a mer-man at this point!
ThrSage fucking nailed it. Torts was awesome. Every coach has a shelf-life. Torts expired faster than everyone would've liked. Does he need to adapt? Sure. But you can't take away his hockey competence. I am excited for a new coach and direction, but sad to see Torts go this way. He really is a stand-up guy. You'd want Torts on your side in a bar-fight. 'Nuff said.
I know he's hated by many, but I truly miss the energy Avery brought to MSG and the edge he played with. Everyone knows that Hank and Avery and Richards are tight, one has to believe he was privy to what the vibe was in the locker room, and how his former team mates really felt about the direction Torts was taking the team. Funny Brooks sought Avery for comment. Funny but not surprising. Two dudes who clearly want the last word with Torts.
Brooks should be ashamed of himself. To allow this clown to gloat over Torts firing is awful. I guess its Brooks way of sticking it to Torts cause Torts made him look like an idiot in thos Press Conferences. I have been a Ranger fan for 40-years & no player was more embarrasing then Avery. The guy is a bad bad guy. Whose teamates hated him but somehow he has appointed himself Mr. Ranger...please its a joke. My favorite line was he did for Ranger fans, yeah sure he did. Sean Avery did it for the only person Avery cares about...Avery. He is a disgrace & an awful human being. A man lost his job, & I know how Torts acted is why people are gloating right now but its not right. How do u think that handicaped kid Liam, that Torts took under his wing feels today about Torts firing. Or his kids. Again iits a disgrace & we should not be giving Avery any attention.
He wasn't right he originally tweeted fire this clown his players won't play for him. Well they did, they rallyed made the playoffs won games 6&7 & won game-4. Torts didn't get fired cause they players quit on him. I Teams that quit on coaches don't accomplish all that. I commented yesterday on what a source told me. Sather fired him for many reason the biggest being Torts refusing to change things Sather & Norton, who from what I have been told has a big voice in the organizationwanted him to change. The players excuse is just Sather using Brooks to make him look better. Think about it all the stories being written are about Torts "losing the players" & not about Sathers flawed roster.
BTW Brooks source is Sather
@thebigm Cally was in the operating room, as was Hagelin.
@thebigm Thats a good point. The thing about Brooks though is he reached out to Avery for a reason. They both hate Torts & Brooks editors would never let him write a "I am glas Torts got fired cause he embarrassed me" column so he gets his satisfaction by letting Avery gloat. This was looks ahem...professional..cough cough & Avery & he get to stick it to Torts.
@thebigm Well you have to imagine the management has put a muzzle on the players, they're probably not allowed to comment on it.
@thebigm Players don't burn bridges because they never know where they will end up in their careers...unless of course they are named Sean Avery. Cally would be useless for any info, and I don't think anyone else would give any real details either.
Amen Gravy well said...it's funny how the expression u hate in others what u see in yourself...hence Avery & Torts hating each other.
BTW Torts did more for this organization then Avery ever did.
Also, he has the most wins as an American born coach. In a Canadian dominated sport, gotta respect that shit.
@Iron Mike I too liked what Avery brought to the table, even though he probably was a selfish player. I can't remember the last time anyone on the NYR could change the course of the game by goading other players into taking stupid penalties, throwing them off their games, etc. Dorsett tries, but he's no Avery.
@Iron Mike Brooks always defended Avery for one reason. He identified w-him cause like Avery almost everyone in hockey hates Brooks. Its why in a business where journalists always defend each other people laughed went torts said "u must have gotten beat up alot". I like Brokks columns but he is a total slob & jack ass who is hated by most who know him.
@ThrSage When you have no shame you cannot be ashamed!
@ThrSage Not sure who's reveling in the firing more Avery or Brooks.
