The New York Rangers defeated the Washington Capitals by the score of 4-3, tonight to tie the series 2-2. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...listen, I'm more than pumped about the win, but man, this team can't make it easy on their fans, can they. Rangers obviously the better team and still have to hang on for the win. Heart in my throat for the final minute once again.
...resiliency? Urgency? Toughness? Not exactly characteristics that have defined the 2013 Rangers. But hey, better late than never.
...you can't stop Dan Girardi on the power play, you can only hope to contain him.
...one assist, +1, 6 SOG, 7 blocks and 5 hits. Yep, that's a Callahan stat line if I've ever seen one. The exact performance any great captain is supposed display in a game of this magnitude.
...watching Stepan (two game winning goals) and Hagelin (2g, 2a, +3) taking the next step in their careers right in front of our eyes in this series. Exciting to see.
...can't believe Torts scratched Nash tonight. Wait, he played?
...at this point it's safe to a say a half blind Staal would be better out there than Del Zotto. Still can't figure out what he was doing on the Perreault goal.
...speaking of the Perreault goal, I know Eminger made a bad read but Torts is cutting off his nose to spite his face by benching him for the rest of the game. Eminger had been good in this series up until that point and we all saw how the Rangers defensemen got burned out last year when Torts lost confidence in Bickel.
...anyone saying Lundqvist is giving up soft goals has never played goaltender before. Almost every goal against has been either deflected or in the slot. What else do you want from him?
...who new that Brassard would be the former Blue Jacket sparking the Rangers offense in the playoffs.
...praying that Staal scratch had to do with him just not feeling comfortable Monday night, not being flattened by Brouwer.
...it wasn't a goal to tie it with 6.6 seconds to go, but that was a big tally by Richards to reward the Rangers for their strong first period.
...I really like the healthy, playoff Boyle. He's sort of good.
...maybe Ovechkin needs to focus more on finding the back of the net for his team than if the Rangers are being physical enough with him.
...eight goals on Holtby the last two games. Now that the Rangers are finally getting some quality shots on the Washington netminder I think he's been exposed.
...best of three starting on Friday in Washington.
HANK is the King. He is so solid and consistently amazing it's easy to forget he's human. 2 of those goals were soft - but I think the better way to describe them is soft for Lundqvist. good goals against most goalies. Fair or not we have higher standards for him.
Liked the intensity of the last 2 games - but it is scary watching the Rangers play with a lead. I don't like when they sit back in a shell and stop forechecking. No lead is safe in the playoffs.
Gotta know how MDZ manages to stay in the lineup and get significant minutes. Why are they afraid to bench this kid? Who's he blowin' or paying or both to get the minutes he does? Torts benches guys for even thinking about mistakes. Yet this kid gets a pass all season long. I don't understand this. He ain't killing it offensively and he's weak in his own end. Put his ass in the press box please! We got lots of alternatives on D.
Everyone is always down on Pyatt (and it's not without some merit), but he was very solid last night, and provided 2 of my favorite moments. 1) the open ice hit on Ovechkin in the beginning of the first period - that was sublime; and 2) when he knocked that puck down out of the air that Richie ended up putting in the net - that was some pretty amazing hand-eye coordination right there. Plus I think he had 2 assists last night. A very solid game.
Del Zaster? Not so much. Please, please sit him. Or at least play him less. He's rapidly becoming our Marc Andre Fleury.
I was thinking things were going too good when we were up 2-0. Sure enough. I'd love to see at least one Rangers blow out this series!
Based upon the fact it was a playoff and must game for the Rangers it was probably their best game of the year evne with giving up 3 goals. They scored when they needed to and shut down the top Caps line again. No reason they can't win the next 2 and move on which 2 weeks ago I didn't think was possible. You have to take your hat foo to Sather, I was dead against the Gabby trade but right now it looks like the best trade he has made including the Nash deal ! And did anyone notice how the ice opened up with Clowe on the Hagelin goal? He is a physical presence and the other team needs to keep their heads up when he's on the ice. Now lets shut up those obnoxious Caps fans and end this thing Sunday night, winning Sunday night makes Monday so much better!
"...can't believe Torts scratched Nash tonight. Wait, he played?"
Ha! my sentiments exactly, where the hell did he go? It sure would be nice for him to show up again.
Gotta give props to Pyatt for knocking that puck out of mid-air to set up that first goal, also to Zucc for those 2 takeaways by being a forechecking beast in the 3rd
Love how this blog has del zotto by his throat.. He's not the only defenseman who made a mistake last night and if his partner was in the right position he wouldnt have to make a bad quick decision. But hey your so right lets just shit on our 23 year old defenseman.. A NHL defenders primes is at the age 25. You saying he has to go he has to go.. Just doesn't make sense he produced the most in the regular season and is playing fine.. Leave the kid alone
Nash needs to stop making the extra move n just start shooting...if Hags n Girardi aee getting shots passed Holtby, imagine what a top-5 shot will do
Impressed how Lundqvist played the puck into the corner instead of covering up for a faceoff in the final seconds of the third, looked to be on purpose.
As for Nash, I think some credit has to be given to Washington for playing him well. Any time it has looked like he might be creating some room to work, the Caps have been getting another defender on him and shutting him down.
Oates hasn't given him the level of match up treatment Torts has put on Ovi, but I think the attention he has garnered from Washington is a big part of the reason he hasn't been dominant.
Regardless, we need more from him to make a playoff run. He has to shake some defenders, get the puck in open ice, and drive to the net like no one but Rick Nash can. The assist he had on Step's goal in game three was nice, but that's not enough for a player of his caliber.
It's hard to criticize Hank for anything, but I think it's generally accepted that if you're going to beat the King, you're going to beat him with traffic. He's plays the angles on point shots conservatively which gives him a better chance on rebounds, but it also means if you find a corner and he doesn't have time to track it down, you can sneak one in. It's one of the reasons I haven't loved Torts strategy of collapsing the wingers and letting these Caps defensemen rip shots: giving up the fluke-prone point shot takes away the advantage you have with a Vezina winner in net.
That being said, Henrik Lundqvist is the reason this team made the playoffs and will be the reason they make a run if they do. If he can see the puck coming, he's not getting beat; and he's not weak off the screen, he's just not strongest there.
Along with all the comments here(ie. if Nash can start scoring), what about J. Moore. He is growing before our eyes. Same with Brassard. About Nash, it is not hurting us, because Ovi is doing crap also. Team confidence and momentum has a huge impact. I disagree with a few posters that said the Rangers did not play well the first two periods. I guess I was watching a different game? Now, let's talk about puck luck. If we had more, we would easily have had 3 more goals. Cally's shot through the crease and the corner bar (so close) , and the one Stepan shot that Holtby just caught with his inside left leg. If we can keep the confidence and momentum going we will be ok. Remember the first two games could have gone either way, no matter how we played. LGR!, the roller coaster continues........ Oh yeah, I forgot, Boyle sucks, Asham sucks, and fireTorts......
As much as im pumped about tying up the series and the big win tonight, does anyone else have serious concerns about the way this team plays (aside from Nash concerns) ? I went to the game and to me it looked like they weren't playing playoff hockey the first 2 periods. They lose all the battles on the sideboards and because of this it seems they can never generate consitent pressure. Now, i will say this wasn't the case in the third period. Even with the lead they were trying to protect, they weren't as on their heels as the first two periods. But it still worries me that they don't have consistent jump as a team
Same score as game 3 - much different game. We looked so much better. Other then the Eminger benching, which seemed like another short-sighted over reactionary Torts move which could easily cost us the game and series, he seemed to make the necessary adjustments from the pasting his team got in 5 on 5 last game so kudos to the coaching staff. They still need to tighten that gap and not collapse so damn much on the D - especially if we win and play the Pens (can you imagine collapsing/blocking shots instead of challenging Iglinia, Malky, the kid and co. and collapsing on Henry? Gonna mean a lot of goals against and a lot of broken bones for). Nashty looked uncomfortable tonight. must be banged up. No need to get worried just yet about his play. Someone here just 2 games ago was saying Hags can't finish? (ahem) - and the winning goal was as pretty as they come and again hags made the play. It's a good sign that you can score when your best player is not. Momentum has swung. I knew Holtby's amazing game 1 would not hold if we kept attacking. Tonight we exposed some weakness. If we keep it up we win. LGR
Can we please just talk about how we dominated faceoffs? Brassard won 8 of 9 faceoffs. We looked pretty damn solid in that department. Moving on, Eminger made a mistake. Del Zotto made the awful play and sprawled around trying to make it seem like it'll make a difference. How many times has he gotten beat that way? It's awful. It makes me sick. If Moore keeps playing well I wouldn't be against trading Del Zotto for anything.
Totally mystified how Eminger is the one benched after that goal while DZ is still raking up minutes. It is like Torts is trying to turn him into Bickle. Even Leach was saying that DZ misplayed it and Eminger made a ood recovery to take out his man.
I can watch this all night: http://youtu.be/NnR0QQpu_Tg
Rick Nash is missing, and I really dont think the Rangers will be able to win this series, or if they do.. go any further without him. They need some production out of him, and tonight he was fricken invisible!!
despite Nash disappearing, we're getting scoring from all over our lineup, which is something to be happy about. Asham, Boyle, Girardi, Hagelin, Stepan. If Nash and Richards could step it up we'd have a great chance of going deep. Also, Clowe had a great game. Hit everybody, agitated a lot of caps players, and made that great play that resulted in Hags' goal.
Rangs are gonna take. Stralman looked good, Brassard and Zuc are awesome. Idk why emmy was sat for so long. If nash can get going can anyone beat us?
Awesome game. I question if Del Zotto has a brain in his head sometimes. What the fuck is he doing pinching in with 3 minutes left in the game up by 1?
Hey, Hank is the best goalie in the world IMO, but 9 times out of 10 he stops both the 2nd and 3rd caps goal. We won, and thats all that matters, and Hank is the least of my worries going forward.
@knm05Is Nash still banged up? His first impressions this season were all power moves and speed to the net. His moves since he was out with the not-cussion don't have that same umph. In this series in particular, caps have been bringing the pain to Nasher too.
@danblackburn I agree. They've taken all his ice away which has opened up space elsewhere. He's part of hte 8 goals in 2 games even if its not reflected on the stat sheet. That said, he needs to find a way to get some pucks in the net. And I think he will soon.
@danblackburn I feel like when the caps are in the offensive zone we look shorthanded even at full strength. I can't stand the way Torts is having the wingers give the Caps defense so much ice to work with. Torts has to have them play more aggressive at the points
Maybe I was watching a different game. Your complaints seem valid but a game late. Game 4 I saw less and less of this issue of losing board battles. Still some lost but no team's gonna win them all. Overall much better effort from the bigger players.
@BrianMineola I actually thought they were outstanding the first period. Although it did seem like the Caps weren't pinching their D in through the first. Part way into the 2nd the Caps picked up the pressure and began winning all the board battles though.
@BrianMineola There is another team playing the game.
@BrianMineola Agreed - need more agressiveness and passion - but a nice improvement over last game. They looked good in the 3rd
@JoshKaye Boyle was 11 for 19 I think, which is pretty good! Also, yeah, DZ is not really making a case for, uh, doing much around here.
Yeah - Eminger got benched, but MDZ didn't see a whole lotta the ice after that either. He had 6 or 7 minutes less than Stralman which is a good thing in my opinion.
I rewound that one a bunch of times on the DVR. Those three just need to keep playing together. It was art!
@KevinDeLury hopefully this is Nash on Friday!! I believe!!
@Josh6 Do you think he's banged up? didn't look comfortable tonight
@KevinDeLury Del Zotto has pictures of Torts with a stripper
@clarkeybabes Talented but fucked up in the head. Mistakes and misreads define his game now unfortunately
@cb1 2nd goal was tough, 3rd goal looked like it was deflected and just nipped the crossbar I believe - still he usually stops those, that's how good he is.
@cb1 He looked a bit off on rebound control and positioning. Fought through it, played a good game.
@cb1 Second goal was a backhander in tight while the third deflected off a Caps' back. Neither very easy.
@BrendyJohnson YES! More Stralman, less Del Zotto, please.
@sureshore I agree...Much better in game 4......Not gonna totally shut the Caps down...They have guys that can bring it and us getting guys back now definitely makes us a better team...still allot of Hockey to be played.....LGR
MDZ had less ice time than all d excpt Eminger. And no PK time at all. At even strength, he had just 11 minutes. Hardly giving him the most ice time, but I see your point, having seen it with Boyle over the past 2 seasons as well.
