The Capitals defeated the Rangers today by a score of 1-0 in overtime to take a 2-0 series lead in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. For a box score, click here.
Gonna point out a few things before getting to the OT goal....
The start to the game was much, much better. The Rangers were able to sustain pressure in the offensive zone and nearly scored when Stralman rang one off the crossbar.
For whatever reason, perhaps the early start had something to do with it, the Rangers could never sustain pressure in the Caps' offensive zone. Only 24 shots on goal in 68 minutes. Washington dominated play for large swath's of today's game.
Derrick Brassard was money in the circle. Brad Richards.... not so much, 4-14 including 1-5 in the defensive zone.
The Rangers gave up quite a few more odd-man rushes than normal. Luckily for the Rangers, Lundqvist was more than on his game today.
There truly are no adjectives worthy enough to describe Henrik's play in net, gotta feel awful for the guy today. Only beaten off a slapper deflected in by his own man.
Rick Nash played better after a hapless first period. Disregarding Mike Milbury's first intermission comments about him, Nash needs to be the Rangers' best player every night if the team wishes to advance through the playoffs. At times, Nash's effort hasn't been where it needs to be.
Speaking of effort, you could question about 90% of the Ranger roster over how bad do they truly want it....
Now for the goal.... I'm not sure what Callahan was thinking by stepping in front of John Moore, who was in perfect position to block a potential Ribeiro shot. Ribeiro anticipated Callahan going down to block the shot which allowed him to easily feed a wide open Mike Green for the one-timer that deflected off of Stepan on the way to beating Lundqvist past the glove.
Rangers running on fumes. 0 shots in OT now on PK— Dennis Bernstein (@DennisTFP) May 4, 2013
Not all the blame falls on Callahan, however. Prior to Ryan McDonagh getting called putting the puck over the glass, McDonagh was in the midst of the THREE MINUTE SHIFT. Clearly, Torts doesn't care about conditioning by leaving his top defenseman on the ice in for far too long with multiple chances to get off. Even friend of the NYR Blog Dennis Bernstein from The 4th period saw the writing on the wall with that tweet immediately after McDonagh's penalty.
Success isn't on the Rangers side when falling behind 2-0 in a series, they've only come back once in franchise history when they ran off 4 straight against Montreal back in 1996.
Time for Staal to suit up Game 3, he doesn't have to get his usual minutes if he's not comfortable, but the Rangers will be fighting for their lives on Monday back at MSG... what is there to lose?

Couldn't have said it much better myself...but HOW WAS THERE NOT A DELAY OF GAME PENALTY on whoever the hell it was who SWUNG THEIR STICK and chipped the puck over the glass. That was not a deflection. Unbelievable.
this board might be dead but, is it safe to say that the coaching is responsible at this point? Green's goal was caused by a PK that happened because McD made a mistake after a THREE MINUTE SHIFT. His line combinations oh god don't get me started, or on the powerplay either. If we can't kill the important penalties and can't score on ANY powerplays let alone the important ones, why is Sully still here?
bottom line is in order to be successful this time of year, your best players need to be your best players. period!!!! nash, stepan, cally, zuccs girardi, mcdonagh and richards have not done enough. not even close. yeah, lunqvist has been great but holtby has been too. if everyone wants to blame the system as the reason why we hit posts and crossbars and shoot wide so be it. through 2 games, the only guys that have truly played their A games are stralman, powe, asham, eminger and moore. everyone else needs to find theirs real quick or the season will be over. i think the D as a whole has been fine not great not terrible. lastly, outside of cally, we dont hit enough. ovechkin should be getting hit every single shift! thats playoff hockey. washington makes it a point to hit nash, cally, girardi and mcdonagh every time they touch the puck. boyle and dorsett did some of that in game 2 but we need more of it from them and everyone else. boy do we miss clowe.
When this team struggled during the regular season I always felt that they'd give Torts a full season before firing him. But if this team gets swept in the first round, with something like 4 goals scored and none on the PP, any chance Sather and/or Sullivan are gone now? I understand the challenge of a shortened season, but Dolan does not le to be embarrassed...
WOW really your guys are so freaking positive it is disgusting. Have some freaking faith. Geez. I know it sucks they don't score but for the love of god don't give up. Their our team, our boys, our number 1. WOuld you give up on your kids like that. Sad people really really sad
I've said all season this is a one-and-done team (at best). Sadly, I'm being proven right.
You know your team sucks when people extol its good effort for one period of a playoff game. If effort is even a question in May, you have problems.
Here's another prediction -- Hank won't re-sign with this team. Why would he, if he wants to win a cup? Maybe that changes if Torts is gone, but unfortunately that's not gonna happen soon. Hank's gotta be tired of zero offensive support. I know I am completely over Torts' wall game. Don't even get me started on the power play -- should have cost coaching jobs months (or years) ago.
people gotta stop being negative nancys and sunshine patriots. yea, things arent lookin to good right now its true. but this series is far from over. people love to cheer when were doing great but when theres a little adversity, everyone gets so negative. lets just see how it plays out, and then we can be all negative or extremely happy. for now, we are guaranteed two more games, and im expecting a hard effort from the boys in blue on monday night. have faith folks. its not over til its over
It's a curse loving this team! We haven't been able to score since Fleury was here? Remember the F-L-Y line?!?!?!?
and I'm really not feeling bad for Richards anymore. Brassard will be his replacement if he doesn't play better. Don't care if he's bought out at this point. Definition of inconsistent.
Unless the Rangers step up their game they are done. The team actually has good enough players to win handily against the Caps but are fighting a better system and a better coach.Unless Torts and company adapt and change the game plan, Rangers are pretty much done. The players are being beaten to the puck and can't get out of the zone. They collapse immediately to the goal..Maybe they'll win one game if this continues. They need to move the play to the neutral zone.Torts is being outcoached...again.Obviously.
Those people who say the Rangers don't have the talent are way off base..This Ranger team is not being coached properly, and hasn't been.Torts has done all he is capable of doing in New York.Time for him to go.
1 goal in 2 games...that off a Caps defenseman. I want to hear Tortarella complain about his defensemen, and it doesn't matter that Staal was out so Tortarella can forget that excuse. The chemistry on this team is not right, and that leads directly to SATHER who unfortunately has a lifetime GM position under Dolan. The Rangers are done....once again failing miserably!!!!!
It's over. Just like when Mookie came to bat...just like when the Devils won game 5 to go up 3-1...just like when Mario was on the mound with a 3-0 series lead. Yep, I guess it's over. Come on, win at home steal one on the road, move to round 2. Faith people, faith!
I'm getting tired of saying I'm disappointed But I'm very disappointed. If we never see this team again in the playoffs I'd be stoked.
Frustrating game, tough loss. Unfortunately, I don't think this team under this system has what it takes to make it out of the first round. It baffles me that this team can't do to Ovie what the Caps have done to Nash... the guy skates circles around us, unchecked. I truly feel like our weaknesses have been exposed here in the postseason. We'll get a win in our Barn but it seems like the same old song and dance it's been the entire season; an enept powerplay coupled with an inability to maintain and sustain offensive pressure = no offense. 5 SOG in the 3rd and 0 in OT sums it up plus 0 for 3 on the PP is a failure. Without Hank, were a joke. Torts' system isn't working and I pray to God his stubborn ass makes some real changes for game 3, otherwise were one and done.
What is there to lose with Staal? How about him as a player and him as a Ranger. If this team can't get past the first round without him, he is better sitting and being fully prepped for a meaningful second round. In the meantime, please Torts let your players play! Nash scores goals. And he's a company man, he'll do what his boss says. Don't confine him to facing the boards. Can't score that way. Last I checked, the team that scores more wins.
You will see a must win team play with heart on Monday And "we will win"
Mark will be back and clowe
I did like the plan of killing green but obviously that did t work
If the rangers miss during hanks window i am convinced I won't see a cup til I am at least 60 and I am only 18... I guess I am finally getting accustomed to being a rangers fan. If they waste hank I may never forgive them.
Torts could have Gretzky, Lemieux and Crosby on a line, with Bobby Orr and Erik Karlsson on D and they'd all dump and chase and grind it out in the corner. He has ruined this team's (far more limited to begin with) offensive instincts.
He will be fired. It may not be soon, but he will be. There will be no Cup with him on the bench. You can be sure of that.
NOT ENOUGH WILLINGNESS TO GO TO THE NET.......NOT ENOUGH TOUGHNESS....NOT ENOUGH SIZE AND ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUS RETURN ON INVESTMENT WITH RICHARDS. HE DOES NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE, PLAIN AND SIMPLE!
WE WILL GET BIGGER AND TOUGHER AND MEANER IN TIME....JUST NOT THIS YEAR!
@gravey94 hard to have some faith when they play such a godawful 40 minutes (first was good) with no effort. what's there to look forward to? what's going to change? I'll always love this team and have faith but if they don't pick their shit up they deserve to lose.
What changes would u like to see? I for one think if u dress Dorsett u have to sit Powe. When u have Dorsett, Powe,Pyatt,Asham,Boyle, & Hags u 2-ful lines of guys who cannot score. I would dress Miller & Kreider Sit Asham & Powe Put a line together of Miller, Kreider & Cally. See if the kids provide a spark.
@Brukie_ Our d-men outside of McD, G, and possibly MDZ know nothing of Ovechkin and can't contain him. Staal was always the best at keeping him on a leash, if Staal came back you could argue we'd have won our last two games.
@Brukie_ did you watch stralman and moore attempt to defend ovechkin today? Rangers need him back more than anyone right now
I agree we will win Game-3 it will come down to Gam-4. If we win that its a new series. A series doesn't turn until a team wins a game on the road.
Couple of thoughts on Neil's game recap;
1-I always disregard what Milbury says. He was an idiot as a player who fancied himself a tuff guy. He is the same guy who beat a fan w-his shoe. Yeah a real tuff guy. As GM he has his own category on worst trades in NHL. Not only did he trade Chara for a known mutt (Yashin) he paid him 80-m & threw in the 1st overall pick. So I don't pay any attention to a guy who traded huge assets & paid/built his small mkt franchise around a guy who was a known mutt.
2-U cannot win games w-Powe,Boyle,Pyatt,Asam Dorsett & even Hags. That 50% of ur fwds who can't score. If u dress Dorsett u have to sit Powe. Just not enuff scoring.
3-Everyone said this series would come down to the PP they r 2 for 7 we r 0 for 7 thats the series right there. U cannot even when he is playing wellhave Richy on the point. The 2-fwds on the other team don't have to respect his shot cause its 40-mph. Why Torts & Sully can't see that is beyond me. Dumb dumb dumb.
4-I didn't think we could win the Cup w-out Staal now I don't think we can win the series w-out him. He needs to play.
This team has handled adversity all yr. so I have no doubt we will win Game-4. We will see what happens after that.
I have confidence we can still win the series but Torts needs to smarten up.
I wish it was mark messier because as much as l love staal, right now defense isn't the issue... Giving up one goal should be a win every night
Wow your 18.. Im almost 23 :D
And if they do lose Hank.... I will never forgive the Rangers, they can kiss their chances of winning the cup goodbye.
@ThrSage suit Miller? hell no. he was absolutely horrid down the stretch in the regular season, imagine how bad he'll be when the pressure's even higher.
@ThrSage I agree. I'd like to see Miller suited up again for sure ( couldn't hurt), and I agree that Powe and Dorsett cannot both dress, I've got no confidence in Kreider but that's most likely because of how Tort's has handled him. I guess I'd like to see the Rangers skate it in and try to hold the zone, slow the rush on occasion and set something up instead of dumping and chasing every single time they cross the red line, we never seem to gain control of the zone. The constant grind cycle below the hash marks isn't working with this group and isn't generating real offensive chances, and we've got no real threat from the point. Doesn't seem to be much chemistry in any of our lines ( I wonder why that is). Torts needs to let these guys take some real chances offensively which will never happen in his defense-first system.
I thought Caps were better than us last yr, we just gutted out a win & rode Hank. Now that Green is playing like a top Defensman again they have excluding Goalies the 3-best players in the series. We cannot match Ovy or Green. Nash & Backstrom r at best equal & Backstrom maybe better. Though Hank is better than Holtby, Holtby is good enough to hold his own. Plus they R red hot they win games they don't play we'll (see game-1) & Games in which they do ( Game-2). We have to try to get them off their game somehowWe will also have to find more scoring...I would do something unconventional... I would dress Miller & Kreider Sit Asham & Powe Put a line together of Miller, Kreider & Cally. See if the kids provide a spark. What changes if any do u think we should make!
@ThrSage Torts? Smarten up? what drugs are you on? you couldn't pay that stupid f--k to change his ideas.
@ThrSage Nothing you say is anything I disagree with. I've wanted no part of Washington since the prospect of playing them arose and unfortunately my fears came to a head. Admittedly, I thought the Rangers would be much better than this although I'm on record before the series taking Washington in 7. Beating them 4 out of the next 5 is going to be a tall order, with or without Staal.
I agree he was bad but he has more pure skill then Powe Pyatt boyle Asham Dorsett & or even Hags. I guarantee Miller would have buried at leat 1 of the 2 breakaways Hags had in Game 1. Remember he gave us a spark when he first came up. It's worth a shot cause w-Clowe out this team has too many guys who have no offensive skill.
@ThrSage He's an interesting guy and he's entertaining but his time in NY is over. Look what Oates has done with the Caps, his coaching style is the exact opposite of Torts. He never focuses on the negative and doesn't punish his players, he rewards them and fosters confidence and supports an up tempo offensive style that the players embrace. Torts is a dictator who instills fear in his players, and makes them focus on defense ALL the time and if you don't or you make a mistake, you sit. He's got to go. The lack of scoring is the system, NOT the players. Look at the talent we have (and had). He's got to go. He's stubborn and refuses to adapt. I'm done with this guy. I will say the same thing even if we get out of the first round, we need a change. Torts and Sully for that matter have to move on for this organization to get another cup.
@ThrSage The Rangers have enough talent to win most of the time, however they are seldom put in a psition to win becaujse Tortorella doesn't seem to get this team prerpared enough, he makes no in game changes and usually gets out coached. THe players will say all the right things but Tortorella's mantra now falls on deaf ears it's time for him to go and the take his butt boy Richards with him.
I have been a big Torts supporter. My brother & I have lived and died together w-the Rangers for 40-yrs & we have never disagreed on anything as much as we do Torts. He hates Torts cause he thinks he is the main cause of our lack of goal scoring. He says all the things u said above plus he feels Torts only benches offensive guys when they make mistakes & never the guys who are known for defens ie;Giradi or Powe. I have defended Torts but I have to agree w-you. Though I think part of the problem is we just don't have enuff goal scores we have a good snuff Goalie & Defensive mindset to win a Cup. If u have those 2-things all u need is a couple of guys to get hot or get timely goals. IE; the Kings last yr. However we r too predictable. We just dump & chase. Due to that teams know what to do to defend us. We have to change tactics. One thing as crazy as this sounds is we never ever fake shots. in today's NHL w-such great defense & goalies its an effective tactic to create room. Especially on the PP. For example Riberio's assist on Greens goals. Teams r very aggressive attacking the point men when we r on the PP. We never fake shots so they can come right after us. It's sounds overly simplistic but I have seen a lot of goals scored that way. The Miller Kreider thing is just a suggestion to try to catch lighting in thee bottle like Kreider last yr. Maybe create a spark. Though Miller struggled jus last few games w-us & Kreider did all yr they have more skill then Powe Pyatt Asham Dorsett & even Hags. I would also like to see Brassard get more ice time he has played well & deserves more ice time. Speaking of Hags he is a 3rd line player who gets top 2 minutes. I guarantee Kreider & Miller would have buried at leat 1 of the 2-breakaways Hags had in Game-1. In any case I think Torts will adjust & we will game-3, then game-4 is key. We win the next 2 & we have a shot. However Torts needs to change it up.
Guys I have been a fan for 40-yrs. I have seem 1-Cup, 2-Finals, 4- Conf. Finals & far too many 1st & 2nd rd exits. Think anout that in almost 35 pllayoff tappearances they have advanced past the 2nd rd 4x!!!! It makes days like today very frustrating....So maybe the next 40 trs will b better.
@Josh6 was meant to say Cmon
@Josh6 Oh come one... No one is cursed
Rangers will sweep them in 4 games (just like in 1996 vs Montreal :D)
