Seriously, is there anything Henrik Lundqvist can't do? This guy has single handedly kept the Rangers in this series. The Blueshirts have scored just 11 goals in the first six games. 11! And because of the Swedish netminders heroics there will be a Game 7.
Here's some of his handy work from the closing minutes of Game 6 including his final second pad save on John Carlson...
Here's John Tortorella on his goaltender (via NHL.com)...
"The ultimate goal for Hank, in his mind, is to win the Stanley Cup. But you need to go through these types of situations to get there obviously. So I thought he stood in there last year for us and he certainly came up big [Sunday]."
The Capitals Karl Azner added...
"Obviously, one of the best goalies in the League. We're lucky we have some of the best scorers in the League and the best playmakers. I just hope that our guys are better than their guys."
...can you believe there have been fans during this series that have been critical of Lundqvist. Somehow blaming him for not being good enough! The guy has a sub 2.00 gaa and a .930+ save %. What the hell else do you want?
...sure his overtime record in the playoffs is terrible, but ask yourself if that's his fault of that of his teammates, who sometimes seem like they're trying not to score.
...as has been the case since he's entered the league, the Rangers will only go as far as Lundqvist will take them and you can bet that my money is on Lundqvist to take them to the next round tonight.
yeah, but 4 out of the 6 games Holtby hasn't been too shabby. 6 games. 3 we were outplayed. 3 we outplayed them. Very even in my eyes. Yes, the King's been great and has saved our butts once again but give credit to the whole team
I know the Rangers have some incredible stat about the last time they blew a lead in the 3rd period and lost in regulation, but I'd be interested to see a stat of "Empty Net Opportunities" vs "Empty Net Goals", or our plus minus when the opponent pulls their goalie. If were as amazing at protecting leads as the first stat shows, you have to imagine we see a decent number of Empty Nets, but I hardly remember us scoring empty netters to ice a game. I think McD had one this season, Boyle had one in Carolina. On the flip side, I remember that Boston game where they scored 2 with the emplty net to force OT.
Part of it may just be our system of collapsing, but you watch that last 1:30 and the only reason we got to change lines twice was a bad pass by the Caps and Hank covering the puck. After the last faceoff with 48 seconds to go, the puck didn't touch a single Ranger stick (although it hit plenty of shins). I know we don't want to leave a guy like Backstrom or Ovechkin open in the slot, but the Caps have scored a lot of weak goals from the point in this series, I'm just surprised were not more aggressive at the points and along the boards.
All Hank has to do is pitch a shutout for the next 13 games in a row and the Rangers win the Cup. As stupid as it sounds, that's about what it is going to take with Torts, the lack of offense, no PP, etc. The Rangers need to adopt a "Win it for Hank," attitude, for all he has done to lift this team on his shoulders.
i kinda got that feeling early on in yesterdays game that hank was sharp and CHOSE to not let anything past him. THATS call exuding confidence. and he was.
And maybe just maybe if Tortorella didn't only use 10-11 forwards and 3-4 D-men from the second period on the O/T record would be better! Seem sby the end of the game a lot of them are gassed, so they lose in OT.
The funny thing about the skirmish at the end was what that loser Jack Hille was overheard screaming......"Stay Class New York"!!! Is he kidding me....they had 6 guys on the ice against our five. Brower starts everything. Brower also cross checked someone at least four or five times after the whistle.
Check out the 4:16 mark.....Ovechkin mushing Strallman. Classy.
There will be fewer comments with this article than in the others because we just expect greatness from the King. There are certain players that we as fans want to see raise the cup. I am sure that for all Ranger fans it is the King.
I love when Stepan wrestles his guy to the ice by sweeping the leg at the 3:10 mark. Also I was as anxious today as I was yesterday watching this.
Hank really needs to take his game to the next level. He has to start skating the puck out of his zone, beating the 5 players on the other team ans scoring on his counterpart at least 2 or 3 times per game. Time to step up Hank, since nobody else seems willing to do so!
@gravey94 you sound like a yankee fan lol. CHAMPIONSHIP OR FAILURE.
@gravey94 I concur. He should also play the point on the PP.
@Dminches im gonna start writing down some of these good ideas.
