While there has been wild speculation that John Tortorella could be fired if the Rangers are swept or lose in a short series to the Bruins, Jeff Klein at the New York Times says that scenario doesn't seem likely...
"There have been no indications from the Rangers’ organization that Tortorella’s job is in jeopardy, as there were in the weeks leading to the firing of his predecessor, Tom Renney, in February 2009."
Klein adds that the Rangers run to the Eastern Conference Finals last season along with the seven-game comeback victory over Washington in the first round this season, have probably guaranteed that Tortorella will start next season behind the Rangers’ bench.
...while Darren Dreger of TSN, who started the whole Torts could be fired rumor, is a respected insider in the hockey industry, I'd rather take the word of a beat reporter who's around the Rangers on a daily basis and likely has a better feel of the organization's thinking on their head coach.
...i do have to say that I was beyond disappointed in the Rangers effort Tuesday night and if they come out as lethargic in Game 4 tonight, not only will they be swept, but my personal leash on Tortorella will be that much shorter beginning in October.
I read what Dregger wrote and thought he was talking more in hypotheticals. He was saying IF the Rangers were beaten he COULD see Torts fired. In other words, he just stated it as a possibility, he didn't say it was happening.
betweentheworlds....Torts line matching is a big, big problem and why I dont like him anymore...he also exhibits early signs of mental illness....
No they probably won't fire Torts, but if they did they would not tell the press that. I would say they should fire him but who the hell would they replace him with. big question. I don't like this coach and never have but fact is that under the right circumstances he has proven to deliver - just as long as he does not have to adapt or modify his approach.
Look at who Torts developed.........McD (cast offm from the Habs).......Giradi (no body wanted)...........Boyle (cast off from a trade)..........Hags (great speed, no hands).....Stralman( Devils released him!)....add your own names cause this gets boring.
Ranger fans get a grip! This team does not have enough people who can score goals and play mean, strong and skate fast in the playoffs. Do you think Torts and Sather want more of this kind of player or do you think they don't? It is not easy to get these kinds of players!
To all the "torts must go-ers" In this day and age of The Cap name all the Coaches who play a different system, and develop players to the degree that Torts does and wins cups....please help me to understand....please.....please......please!
It's time. I have felt that when Tortorella came, he tightened the defense and made the team hard to play against. But it appears his time has passed. This season has been more than frustrating and when the team came out flat at home down 2-0, that sealed it for me. The power play is ridiculously bad and it's not just in the playoffs. It's been that way all year. If Sullivan runs the PP then Tortorella should have made a change in the off season. It's been bad for years. Time to change the coaching staff while this team is still together. Who knows what will happen in another year if this coaching staff remains and a number of players will be free agents.
If we lose Torts has to go.Look what the Canucks said about their coach
"We lost consecutive games in the last two playoff years, and there comes a point in time where the message has to change and we have to be better. And we simply didn't get the result we expected." Mike Gillis on firing Alain Vignault.
You gotta let sully go. Torts can stay but Sather has to make it clear that his system has to adjust.
I didn't want to post this in your Super Positive post this morning, but this seems like a good place to be a little more pessemistic. A lot of the nay-sayers on here have got me worried that Lundqvist is going to go searching for greener pastures at the end of next year. Its kind of amazing to look at CapGeek and realize that Rich Nash, Brad Richards, Derek Dorsett, and Marc Staal are currently the only players under contract past the 2013-2014 season.
If next season doesn't show promise of turning this ship around moving back in the right direction, this team could basically be dismantled, by Managements' doing, or by the players looking for other opportunities. Rick Nash is our new star, he is extremely talented but like many other stars, is getting lost in Tortorella's system. He doesn't seem to be playing to Tort's game plan. He blocks shots, but he barely hits, and he doesn't sue his size to his advanteage like Torts preaches. If this team can become more offense-driven, built around Rick Nash, and they need a new coach to get them there, then it needs to be done this offseason.
Like you said, it's tough to say when you're not in the locker room. You have to wonder if a Lindy Ruff situation is happening here and the "players just aren't getting the message anymore."
If he stays, great. Let's put the pieces in place to return to Torts styled hockey that took the franchise to the ECF last year.
If not, I'm a huge advocate for Guy Boucher after seeing what he did with the TBL squad and utilizing his powerful offense. If Torts is gone, Sullivan is too, and the staff can prrrrrobably come up with a better PP, offensive structure, and less grinding style game that has worn out the team by the 2nd round of the playoffs each of the last two years.
@jvr You are insane. Starlman has been one of the most consistent and best playing defensemen behind MAC. Boyle might be leading the team w/ face-off wins n has been playing awesome in the post season.
@jvr you have no clue what you're talking about including Stralman in that comment
@EHBIGAPPLE Not sayin your wrong - system is fine but you need imagination, adaptability, strategy etc. etc. Good coach on paper - not so good in the real world.
@BBJ36 Nailed it! It's what I've been saying all along. What scares me most is that in 2014, Lundquist is an unrestricted free agent! How much longer is he willing to put up w/ a team that can't score for him.
@fs2020 Little bit of a different story with the canucks though, they went from the Stanely cup finals, to getting swept by the 8 seed, to getting swept once again the following year by the 6 seed. A trip to the ECF and the ECSF in back to back years is not a fireable offense.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG honestly don't know how Sully still has a job with the way the PP has been the past few years. I know hes good with the D but something needs to change. Of coarse i'm running under the assumption its his job to coach the PP.
@johnnyb3910 I tend to disagree, while he's not constantly throwing his body around, for an elite goal scorer like he is I think he does a solid job. He's laid a couple of hits on people in the playoffs so far and hes not scared to get into some scrums in front of the net either. I have to say this aspect of his play is probably what has shocked me most this year. He can also hold his own defensively when he gives the effort. But I do agree those arent the kind of things we brought him here to do.
@RyanMC @fs2020 Good point and accurate, but for me the key is the phrase"didn't get the result we expected".Myself , I expect more from this Rangers team.I expect more offence better playmaking, better strategy and most of all I expect to be past the ECF and into the Stanley Cup.I think we have the players and core to do that.I don't think Torts is up to that challenge.
@greggray24 I agree but you have to look at it from the perspective of when does it become more about winning a cup vs more money. If Hank was with any other decent semi-scoring team, he would of had his name on the Stanley Cup by now. I'm praying things turn around for next year.....I'm sure Torts will still be here and maybe he is somehow able to right this ship w/ some offseason acquisitions. But if we end up with another ugly season right before Hank's contract expires he might consider looking elsewhere.
