Glen Sather has made a habit out of stealing secondary players in trades (see McDonagh and Prust). And now, with every game that passes it looks like John Moore is going to be added to that list. Here's John Tortorella on the defenseman (via Bergen Record)...
“I think he’s understanding as far as stick on puck, just to use his range to best of his ability because he takes up a lot of space, understanding how hard he has to be in the corners, he still has a lot of improvement there. I think he’s picking those things up, and just positioning period, to pick up quick thoughts, quick reads as far as where he should be on the ice.”
On Moore's offensive prowess from the blueline...
“I think part of our game, not just starting in playoffs, the last 10-15 games, we felt we were coming off the blue line too early and not allowing us to create opportunities. Especially a guy like (Moore) and a guy like (Ryan) McDonagh, if they get caught for some reason, they can recover. For all D, we’ve tried to keep them on the blue line longer so we can create offense longer. We want it more aggressive than just backing off.”
John Moore says his recent strong play is all about confidence gained from having an opportunity. Didn't always have it in Columbus.— Andrew Gross (@AGrossRecord) May 7, 2013
...Moore has already supplanted Del Zotto on the first power play unit and I tell you what if he keeps this up, it could be the reason Del Zotto is shipped out of town before his contract is over at the end of next season.
...kid is as smooth of a skater as they come and his game has improved significantly as he's gotten more comfortable in the Rangers system. If he can take his offense to the next level we could be looking at the defenseman we always thought and hoped Del Zotto would be. Except Moore, you know, actually plays some defense.
Here's Del Zotto on Moore taking away some of his PT (via Bergen Record)...
"It's healthy competition. He's played well since he's come here. I thought the power play was good [Monday]. If you have two good units, it definitely helps spreading out the minutes."
Here's more from Tortorella at practice yesterday...
From the 1st game I liked Moore and thought he might be something special. Too early to tell but so far he is proving me right, and he has yet to make as many mistakes since being here then MDZ typically makes in one night. . As for MDZ, the kid's got talent but something's got to be wrong with his head. I've been rooting for him because he has what it takes to be a good offensive Dman but after some promising games he's digressed and has not picked it up in the playoffs. . Moore's got a nice shot and I suppose with the right work ethic could develop into an offensive threat as well but there's no way he should be matching MDZ's offensive talent. MDZ's still young, he came up at 19 the first time and he can still develop but damn, all those mistakes! Got to think the coaching staff's patience is running out
My friend today said Hank is going to bolt and go to the penguins. Of course he is a pens fan, but if they did find a way to get him in pretty sure that team would win for the rest of hanks career. The rangers better show hank they can win for him... Starting tonight!!! LGR!!!
Whoa there. Let's all just calm down. What is it with Ranger fans that everyone leaps to immediate judgement on players?
Kreider was proclaimed as a hockey god before he'd ever played a game, and despite the fact that he's only been playing 'decent' hockey in Hartford (which, by the way, is TOTALLY FINE FOR A ROOKIE), everyone is demanding for other players to be benched in favor of him and host of other un-proven kids from Hartford. It didn't used to be that players were expected to jump right from college/juniors right into full-time stints on the varsity squad, but now everyone acts like it's a slap in the face to Kreider if he plays in the AHL. I just don't get that.
Now Moore has 3 good playoff games and people are anointing him king of the power play and suggesting we scrap Del Zotto? Now, I'm not the hugest fan of DZ - I think his game still has a long way to go (and he was TERRIBLE in game 3), but can we just take a deep breath and see how things go after we've had a GOOD, EXTENDED look to evaluate Moore?
I like the looks of Moore and Kreider, but I think people are jumping to conclusions WAY too quickly. Kreider needs time to develop as a player and we need time to see if this is the real Moore or if he's just on a hot streak (although please oh please can this hot streak go all the way to the SCF?!).
OK, I'm done. [hops down off soap box] Let's go Rangers! See you all at the Garden tonight.
With all the UFAs and RFAs coming up after next season, it's a pretty safe bet that the Rangers will not be able to keep Girardi, Stralman, MDZ and Moore and still be able to pay Cally, Hank, Brassard, Kreider, Boyle (?) and Powe(?), especially after having to pay Stepan, Hagelin, Clowe, Zucc, and McDonagh this summer. I would bet that the 1st half of next season will be a competition for who gets the contract and who gets traded between Moore and MDZ, possibly even Stralman, although his game is more complete and he makes less than MDZ. Given the size of their current contracts, if MDZ and Moore play equally, MDZ will be trade bait for whatever needs come up next season.
He reminds me so much of McDonagh. Moore has a better shot than McDonagh but isn't as good defensively, I can't wait to have these guys on the back end for the next 10-15 years. What do you think they could get for del zotto? I'm thinking sather ships him out during the draft for a second rounder possibly a late first. This is a very very good draft and the rangers need picks after losing their first for Nash and second for clowe
Del Zero needs to go. Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the point and embarrassing on defense.
Hank named Vezina finalist.
Lundqvist - 24 Wins, 2.05 GAA, .926 Sv%, 2 SO
Bobrovsky - 21 Wins, 2.00 GAA, .932 Sv%, 4 SO
Niemi - 24 Wins, 2.16 GAA, .294 Sv%, 4 SO
@Josh6 Hank has become NYC thru & thru. He owns a restraunt, started aband, & hits the town every chance he gets. he ain't giving that up to go to Pittsburgh, How would they afford him under the Cap? They are going to pay Malkin, Crosby, Letang, Neal, Orpik, & Hank. Not a chance. Hank is way to competitve to take less money & Fehr is already doing in Hockey what he did in baseball...pressuring players to not take 1-dime less then they deserve. So ur friend is just engaging in wishful thinking cause he sees what we all see...Fleury melting down. Ur friend knows they are not winning a Cup unless Vokun turns back the clock & becomes the player he used to be cause Fleury is awful!!!!
@queensbee What I like about Moore, and why I don't think it's just a hot streak is that he's steady, smooth and commits very few errors, and has played that way; smart since coming here. Not sure about him being our go to point man but the more offensively skilled MDZ commits many errors and seems to not be in the zone the way Moore is. I have to say with Krieder that I like his jump and speed and he may have won the first series but his play was not stellar in AHL last year. I think they took a gamble bringing him here in the playoffs knowing that we needed a jump and knowing the guy can skate and shoot but after the adrenaline ran down after getting a couple timely goals he looked like a minor leaguer out there. Let him develop, he has the potential to be a very good player. Got to agree with you that some of the fans here get a bit carried away and jumping to conclusions too quickly - but I love you all! LGR
@queensbee I think the point is that the Rangers don't have the luxury of waiting for a few seasons to see who becomes the better player or even to keep both. I've been a strong supporter of MDZ, but he's been maddenly inconsistent! If Moore keeps showing what he's shown, not just in the playoffs but also since the trade when he earned more minutes, I think it's safe to say that MDZ becomes more expendable. MDZ has not shown growth since his tremendous rookie season, which means either we are seeing what he will always be or he needs to step up quickly. Either way, I think he gets 1/2 of next season to show why he should be the one to get paid.
@queensbee Isn't rushing to judgement what Rangers fans do best? lol
Idk, dz has shown me nothing this year. And honestly with every player on the team essentially up for a new deal next year we may not even have the money to keep him. So, I am all for trading DZ for a first rounder or 3 second rounders. I really don't think he is a part of the future. We have Staal, Girardi, McDonaugh, stralman, Moore, mcilrath, eminger and eventually Skjei... That's a lot of young talented dmen... I'd take the draft picks, and try to find a goal scorer
@gravey94 I would try to use MDZ in a package with some other prospects to get another goal scorer.
@gravey94 I think we buy out Richards regardless in 2013-2014. Not playing well enough to warrant his money, and unless he has a 100 point season I won't be convinced he's worth it. If we buy him out, affording all those guys doesn't seem so hard anymore. Doubt we keep Stralman, great d-man, but he's expendable, and we can get a nice return for him. MDZ......who knows anymore.
@clarkeybabes and Del Zotto is definitely worth more than a second rounder. He's pretty proven and he's young.
@clarkeybabes if Moore bulks up, maybe 15 pounds, he'll be mac truck II.
@shishya100 I doubt Niemi wins with that .294 Sv%. ;)
@gravey94 @queensbee The only thing holding MDZ back is MDZ. he is missing that supremem confidence all offensive defensmen need to go the that level. All the great ones had it. If u don't have it u can't make plays, he is to often indecisive & he gets caught in between. I would be careful on giving up on him too soon cause it sometimes takes offensive defensmen a few years to figure it out.
@gravey94 I think Kreider and DZ are 2 totally different situations, though. I think Kreider should get *at least* a season in the AHL, perhaps with the occasional call-up for a game or 2 if needed, to hone his game. DZ has had more time on the bigger stage, and needs to show much more consistency.
I'm also not saying "a few seasons," but I'd like to give it more than just a few games. That sample size just doesn't seem remotely sufficient to me to judge a player's ability.
@KevinDeLury Yes. Yes it is.
@Josh6 I'm psyched about Mcilrath but I thought we lost Skjei to TB, that's great news! Looks like we won't have to worry about clearing our crease in a few years.
@Josh6 don't forget Tommy Hughes and Connor Allen, who are slated to be Girardi part 2!
@PenaltySh0t @gravey94 Looking at CapGeek, it looks like buying out Richards would not be a good idea. If I'm reading it right, his cap hit would be ridiculous: toward the end of his deal (2017-2020):
@ThrSage @gravey94 I also worry about this. Marc has said he likes playing against his brothers, but I have to wonder if that's just good PR training on display. I think that's the only team that could lure him away, and really there's no competing with that if that's what he wants. But if he really means it about liking to play against them, I think he'll stay, at least through another contract.
@gravey94 You bite your tongue! No trading Girardi or Staal! For heaven's sake, we've been working to build up a solid defensive corps for what, years? Now you're considering trading 2 of our best? Noooooo. I'd rather dump DZ, Emmy AND Stralman than either Girardi or Staal.
@queensbee @gravey94 Totally agree on Kreider. He needs at least a training camp before starting either in the NHL or AHL. I think he would be OK at the NHL level in a full season, because there's more room for him to make mistakes.
Like I said, I think Moore and MDZ get half of next season to make their cases. If they both step up, then I could even see Staal or Girardi dangled because they will be expensive when their deals come up!
