While, I'm more than confident there will be fireworks on the ice tonight, according to Bob Raissman at the Daily News there might be some off it as he explains how NBC reporters Mike Milbury and Pierre McGuire went after John Tortorella for his Hagelin "stinks" comments before and during Game 3...
“And I haven’t heard John Tortorella take responsibility for a power play that’s had (Rick) Nash, (Marian) Gaborik, (Brad) Richards, a whole host of good-looking defensemen, and can’t get anything done,” Milbury said. “I think it’s time for John Tortorella to take a look at how he’s coaching this thing.”
This was just the initial shot. With the Rangers on (another) unsuccessful power play in the first period, Pierre McGuire, NBC’s game analyst, pulled the verbal bat from Milbury’s mouth and clubbed Tortorella.
“Throwing your player (Hagelin) under the bus at this time of year — no, I’m not buying it,” McGuire said. “(The power play) has been a problem all season long. It’s the schematic that’s wrong. Not the players.”
Raissman wonders if Tortorella had been informed of these comments before his brief exchange with McGuire during their in-game interview...
Raissman ends by stating that if Tortorella wasn't aware of Milbury and McGuire's verbal jabs before the above exchange, he likely knows by now and it could get heated tonight if the Rangers heads coach even bothers to participate in mandatory in-game interview.
...as if I wasn't fired up about tonight's game enough, I'd kill to see Torts bitch slap McGuire on national television. Talk about must see TV.
...unfortunately, I think Raissman is trying to make something out of nothing and I don't expect much in the way of a confrontation tonight.
...i think Torts has bigger fish to fry, like getting his team back into this series.
McGuire is the worst between the glass commentator. Jasonshyer nails it in his comments below. Who cares what peewee team these guys skated for or the obscure names of their junior high school teams. Seriously McGuire's comments are just this droning noise during the broadcast and why doe he need to ask Edzo or Eddie for his opinion of what he's blabbering about EVERY time?
Give me Joe Micheletti anybody....
Milbury and McGuire are meatheads...Milbury is one of the worst GM's of alltime. Period. His list of awful trades are amongst the worst of ALL TIME. McGuire I used to like, but I can't stand him. I get that he knows a TON about hockey but his announcing style is so grating. That whole tough guys analysis i.e."EHY EDZO CALLAHAN'S REALLY SELLIN OUT FOR HIS TEAMMATES THERE WITH THAT BLOCKED SHOT EHY! HE PLAYED WITH THE ROCHESTER MEDICINE BALLS WHEN HE WAS 12 YEARS OLD EHY THAT'S WHY HE BLOCKS SHOTS SO WELL EHY!" gets grating.
I get the impression Eddie O finds him as irritating as I do.
Why the hell is anyone even listening to Milbury and Maguire? My general rule is that anything they say is the opposite of what is true.
But, please, Pierre, do press Torts about it. And please, Torts, do punch Pierre in the face when he does.
Ah yes, Torts does it again. Nobody talking about the Rangers being down 2 zip in the series because everybody is so concerned about what Torts has to say. Keeping the pressure of his players. Well played coach, well played.
Pay zero attention to any of Raissman's articles. The guy is the gossip queen of NY sports. His old, tired antics are there just to try and get people to click on his articles. Seriously fart joke reporting.
Ya think Torts will say "I stink". Maybe he deserves it. He's has the responsiblity to figure out how to get somebodies butt into the crease. If he's afraid to embarrass players in public maybe he can get Avery to do it.
Agreed Sal. This has always been the knock on Torts. His dog house is bigger then his home because he has no tolerance to teach. He likes veterans, machines. There comes a point when his act grows old and he loses the locker room because of exactly the Hags scene.
Speak your mind yes in the locker room..... not throw them under the bus on national tv.. your job as a coach is to get your team to play at its best.. I'm sorry I don't see how tlkn shit on national tv is going to get Hags performing better..
My problem with Tortarella on this issue is this....... The ENTIRE team is not scoring on PP, so why do you single out one player???? If he is going to single one person out, how about your shitty assistant coach?
It depends how you look at the quote. I am a ranger fan but thought the quote was so off base. Look at the big picture. The biggest criticism of the rangers over the past few years has been the Powerplay.....Pearn got lambasted for it for years....now Sullivan...what is the common denominator? Tortorella. Now Hagelin's name gets brought up??? STOP right there.....Has he used Hagelin on the PP at all in the playoffs...No. So we have a pp that STINKS and a guy he has not used at all because he stinks on the PP? Torts could have went a different way with this. I think he is trying to pull a Bobby Knight motivational test on this one. I think at this point he could have taken the high road but the high road he clearly knows nothing about. I have been saying it all year, or since we got Moore...Get Richards and Girardi off point and use Strallman and Moore. They both get the puck to the net. Tell Boyle to stand in front. thats it....back to basics.
I hope Pierre is ready for 1-word answers to his between benches questions!
The whole Hagelin stinks on the PP thing is so overblown it's ridiculous! The ACTUAL quote is "No, no, it screws me up, too, because I’d like to put him on the power play but he stinks on the power play. I can’t figure it out. I can’t. I love the guy. He is such an effective player, but he, as I said many times, stinks on the power play. I think he’s too quick. I think he’s a jitterbug and he screws it up. But again, I may use him, I don’t know. I’d love to.”
He's not criticizing him, he's saying his game is not suited to the PP. Good God, let it go already!
If they go out in 6 or less, Torts will be coaching camels in Arabia. He has worn out his welcome in NY
I might dislike McGuire a lot but he really knows his stuff, if you call him stupid you don't know hockey.
OMG he answered an question honestly and everyone jumps his shit. Really get off the Torts hater bandwagon. I like the guy. He is spunky. He gives this team shit when they need it. Keenan was no better and look what we got with him... Just sayin
Raissman is always trying to make something out of nothing (I read the Daily News). The only time he's happy is if the coach says everything is his fault and that the interviewer has been asking only impartial and intelligent questions. Doesn't matter which sport, which coach, which interviewer, or what the question was.
Ugh. Wasn't Torts asked specifically about Hagelin on the power play? And then gave his honest, no bull shit assesment as to why Hagelin wasn't being used. Now its being blown out of proportion when guys like Pierre are taking the next step and saying Torts would rather throw players under the bus than own up to coaching failures.
Among many pundits"analysts" I can give a shit about are Mibury, Mcguire, Jones, & especially Bob Raissman. Raissman columns can be described in 1-word...unreadable. So who cares. He is just looking to stir the shit.
BTW to show what an idiot Raissman is do u really think someone told Torts what Mcguire said during a game as Raissman is suggesting. Its so stupid that only Raissman could think that.
Pierre McGuire and Mike Millbury were spot on in their comments. I don't see why you would defend Tortarella here.
I agree 100% about these two idiots, except that for once they both are spot on!
Tort's coaching of the PP does stink! And why does the bum throw one of his speed demons under the bus?
@queensbee LMAO Oh how great would that be great TV. McGuire " Torts tell me about how ur playing so far tnite" then Torts just hauls off & hits him...lol. They could even have graphics like on the Olld Batman series ....bam kapow whatever...oh it would be great. Problem is that Torts would get suspeneded.
@dahjay So true
Funny how all Torts critics point out the "he stinks" not the "I love the guy". Once again well done Gravy
He may know his hockey & he may not be stupid but he does a great imitation of someone who is. He certainly hides all that hockey knowledge.
@MikeNYR22 He participated in the morning skate and last I heard he was picking up his toupe at the dry cleaners.
@ThrSage Everyone in and around the NHL would be sporting "FREE TORTS" shirts. It would be great.
@ThrSage AND, it wasn't Torts who brought up Hagelin....it was the reporter. Torts didn't set out to single him out, he just answered the question in his usual candid way. I heard a lot of "shakes my head" affection in his voice when he was answering. It's been completely overblown.
It always is w-Torts. Parcells used say stuff like that all the time & it was reported as Parcells is motivating his guys thru the media. W-Torts its he is a bad guy ripping his player instead of taking responsibility.
