So how futile has the Rangers offense been in the first two games? Even Capitals netminder Braden Holtby admitted he had an easy time of it in Game 2 (via Washington Post)...
“It wasn’t a very hard game for me,” Holtby said after the game. “We did an outstanding job. Penalty kills are usually where you get the most work and if you eliminate that it’s basically just making the saves that you have to make. A shutout’s one thing but a win is the big thing.”
And if that wasn't enough, he added...
“It wasn’t a very straining game on a goalie,” Holtby said. “It probably didn’t even reach double digits in scoring chances. I felt comfortable out there but there’s still room for improvement.”
...this is far from being bulletin board material and I find it highly doubtful Holtby was trying to needle the Blueshirts, but if the Rangers players aren't completely motivated by these embarrassing comments there's no chance for this team.
...hockey players are very proud and don't like to be disrespected, so I'm hoping Holtby's comments unintentionally lit a fire under this team.
...and if this doesn't work, maybe Sather should call Avery to see if he wants to criticize Torts again.
Here's how the Rangers plan on making life more difficult for Holtby (via Blueshirts United)...
"Yeah, absolutely, we have to better at going to the dirty areas, make it so that (Holtby) can not get out of his crease. That's really one area we can focus on that might help us. You can see in this series it's tough for both teams to score goals, so maybe we just need to put more bodies around their net."
"I wouldn't say it's the only way (to beat Holtby), but it's a good way to start, trying to get traffic in front and getting momentum with shots while crowding the net. I think that's an important way to play, especially in the playoffs. But we want some (more) zone time because you can get a heckuva' lot more offensive chances by playing in their end. I just think we have to challenge Holtby more, make life more difficult for him."
Two of your readers are in the picture with Holtby squirting the water bottle. I'm in the top left in the blue cardigan and Scott Harvey is the Rangers jersey to my right. It was my first NHL game.
it's funny.....this has been an ongoing issue all season long. For some reason Torts does not want bodies going to the crease and would rather guys force awful passes and ugly shots instead. This is embarrassing the way the rangers are playing right now. Thinking about how well this team played last year and seeing them now is sad. Glad we traded Gabby to get more of the same.....Hank standing on his head while offense cant produce.
same as last year... he's yawning through the game. Look at the barrage of shots Hank has to stop compared to Holtby. You can replace him with a few traffic cones
How have we made things difficult for Holtby? No forwards crashing the net, no big bodies banging for position in front of him, no booming shot from the point, a powerless power-play...sadly, I can go on and on.
It's funny that Holtby said this because during the game yesterday, Eddie Olczyk made a comment about Holtby, saying he was fighting the puck on saves in the beginning of the game. I thought he couldn't be more wrong, because as I saw it, he was barely doing anything, as stated in his comments.
Fired up? We're the most slack ass team in the playoffs. Seems more like these guys are fired up to work on their short game in the off season.
