The New York Rangers lost to the Washington Capitals by the score of 2-1 in overtime, tonight. Washington now leads the series 3-2. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
...what? Did you actually think the Rangers were going to allow us to enjoy a stress free Mother's Day weekend? I think you know this team better than that.
...absolutely putrid effort on offense. No pressure, no puck control, nothing. Their effort in the second and third period set offense back a century.
...and the reason for their lack of puck possession? Just a brutal night in the faceoff circle. Especially for Boyle and Brassard who combined to go 11-for-33. Can't score if you don't have the puck.
...hope each player individually apologized to Lundqvist after that one.
...Nash = ARod.
...Brassard has gotten a ton of love on this blog, but it was his failure to clear the puck that led to Ribiero's winner.
...on a positive note, Ovechkin is going to have nightmares about the two-headed monster that is McDonagh and Girardi who were phenomenal tonight. Ovechkin wanted nothing to do with going anywhere near the front of the net.
...Boyle's terribly undisciplined penalty wiped away all the positive vibes from his goal.
...hope Kreider's ready, because I doubt we see Clowe on Sunday.
...i liked Dorsett's game tonight. Very active and deserved more than the seven minutes of ice time he was given. Especially with Clowe knocked out of the contest.
...not even going waste key strokes discussing the power play.
...another strong game from Hagelin, but he's got to start finishing on these breakaways.
...Rangers aren't going to win on Sunday if Callahan and Richards can't do better than one combined shot on goal.
...looks like Torts is finally getting as frustrated with Del Zotto as fans are as Moore (25:04) sees 10 minutes more of ice time.
...don't get me wrong, that was a punch in the gut loss tonight, but this series is far from being over. As was the case the first two games, this loss had more to do with what the Rangers weren't doing than what the Capitals were, which has me feeling confident heading into the must win Game 6.
...and just a quick history lesson. The Rangers won Game 5 in overtime at home last season. And guess who won Game 6 at home to force a Game 7? Momentum does not carry over in the playoffs.
...with the Maple Leafs win tonight, game time on Sunday will be 4:30 p.m.
I'm sorry but I've had it with Tortarella and this terrible terrible PP. This team does'nt even know to shoot from the side of the guy without his stick. That's hockey 101. Also can somebody else shoot other than the pint guys. PP too slow too many passes, no screens . How much longer do we have to look at this crap. It's been 2+ years of lousey PP
U make some very good pointsabout Torts offense & I agree w-them Torts needs to loosen the reigns on offense or he won't win a Up. We spend far too much time behind the Net. Players also at times play hesitant & less creative because they they don't want Torts benching them. So I agree he has his faults & if he doesn't correct them we won't win the Cup. Now as for some of what I just wroteif u asked Torts to about that for example guys feel u srifle their creativity. I am sure his response would be "they have to figure it out thats what winning players do" and he is right. All teams & winning players figure it out. So my point is he is not perfect but he knows what it takesto win cause he has done it. One thing I am tired of hearing from his critics is well who cares if he won a Cup in Tampa or he was lucky....tgats BS. U don't win Cups on a fluke or by accident. It takes a certain commitment & he is trying to instill that here.Thats organization was a mess b4 he got there & was after he left. It wasn't like Deboer coming into an organization as a failed coach & riding that to the Finals. He did something very few guys have done he turned around a bad organization and team and won a Cup. They were young & talented and he taught them. That is hard to do. As for here he has taken us to the playoffs 4 of 5 years. We came within 1-pt of tbe Presidents Trophy & 2-wins from the Finals. He went to the playoffs w-Dubinsky as his #-1 center and the only y we missed was the yr we tied w-Philly. He has also has nutured our young guys & made them players. What frustrates me about Torts critics is they think we have all this ofensive firepower. Who is underacheiving under him? So who is he holding back? Hags? Del-Z? Please they r what they r. Who has he been wrong about who left & is now flourishing somewhere else? No one that who. As for ur comment of my examples being 20-yrs old. Babcock isn't. How bout the most recent Cup winners. Sutter is exactly like Torts. Kings play the same way. They won the Cup scoring 2.5 goals a game. Bruins same thing. Hawks & Pens r the exception cause they have so much talent they play a high octane game. if we had that talent & Torts played that way way then I would b w-you and BTW they play a defensivly responsible game. All the winning teams do. Also thats not true that the game is more open mow. If anything its more defensive. The clutching & grabing era was from 95-04. It may be gone but Defense first still wins. Before 95 the game was wide open & was the Cups were won by teams that had Goaltending Defense and at least 2-high scoring Centers. Its all about Defense Goaltending & timely goals now. The Kings scored just 2.5 goals a game & allowed just 1.5. thats how u win, and again Torts knows it. Finally I am all for firing Torts if u tell me the who is going to come in here & do better & why he will do better. I guarantee u if he is a Cup winner he will b just like Torts cause they all are.
I think thats fair to see. THis system is predicatable. It feels like the Rangers moral victory is just to clear the zone at time. I almost swear Holtby is bored and napping at the other end. There are time where it appears watching on TV that you don't see the Caps goalie for like 5 full minutes. Ridiculous. Not just this series, but last year too with Ottawa, Caps and Devils. It just looks like this is an easy team to play against. And absolutely no toughness. When Henrik makes a save you have Ovi and others just staring down breathing on his neck. When was the last time a Ranger D had a 5 minute fighting major ( not counting that stiff D/ forward Bickel).?
Ovi is right - this teams D is soft.... the truth is quite telling...
Please correct me, disagree me or tell me I'm seeing things. IMO .. the reason the Rangers are pinned in their own zone is due to the very same defensive system they get praised for. The D gets pinned behind the net, the forwards drop down deep in the zone and then move the puck up along the boards. There is no other outlet. Caps know this, thus their D pinch along the boards almost every time keeping the puck in the zone. Am I completely wrong about this?
Understand this, as long as Torterella and that sidekick of an asst. coach Sullivan are here this is the way it will always be. Scrap to win 2-1, 1-0 and hope Henrik stands on his head.
The funny thing i keep reading is how bad the PP is. If I recall it's been like this for 5 years no matter what skilled players come here. The coaching of it is horrible. I remember reading the same stuff 4 years ago when we lost game 7 to Caps and had like 1 shot on net in the must win 3rd period. Nothing changes.
My question is who is responsible for the PP? I believe its Sullivans job as the asst. hopefully if there are to be handshakes (as usual) Sunday Sather finally ends this regime. EVERY team in the NHL has 3 coaches (HC, 2 asst) yet we have the same 2 knuckleheads preaching this same crap for 5 years! You would think after ..I don't know..4 years of an inept PP that same one would pay the price. Tortterella demands responsibility to his players, where is the Rangers brass demands for responsibility from its coaches? If I was Lundquist why bother re signing, unless a creative offensive coach is brought in. There is absolutely no reason that 5 years later you hope to squeeze out 2-1 wins and needing to go 7 games all the time. Rangers look worn out when you only play 6 forwards and 4 d. Caps realize that and have worn them down to nothing. I believe Torterella has taken this team as far as it will ever go and that was last year. Time for fresh start with some fresh new coaching with new ideas. And please make sure there are 3 COACHES on the bench!
When does the coach take any hit for not fixing what is broken. PP has stunk since he has been here. The last time it was a good PP was the Jagr, Straka, Nylander days. It's hard to watch them do the same dam thing every time. The philosophy stinks. There is no quick puck movement and everything always goes back to the point where they hold it too long. Just watch any effective PP and the puck move fast and shots are before the other team can react. It's past bad and it's Torts JOB to FIX IT, which he has not done since he has been coach. It's not the personnel. It's the PP philosophy.
Nash and Richards are killing us for sure. Need more production out of them if this team is going to fight off elimination. Its a shame about Clowe - lets hope its not a concussion. Maybe he dinged up his wrist and can return for game 6. Because w/o him I'm not sure we match up physically with any team. I'm amazed how soft we have become in 1 year. To be honest, I expected a little more snarl from Dorsett. Especially with all of the Prust comparisons. Maybe he is just weary of taking a bad penalty. I love Callahan's heart. He is the only 1 running around and hitting everything that moves but it has zapped his energy to be an offensive force. Hags has been 1 of our 5 best players this series but he needs to finish on more of his chances. The power play has become a complete disaster. WTF - it takes momentum away from us and fires up the other team.
The refs were ABYSMAL. Rags PP sucks. The set up is terrible. Why is nash in the slot surrounded by 4 pkers....He doesnt even touch the puck. WHY isnt he on the right side waiting for one timers/ being able to walk in and draw the d to him like he did in the regular season. AWFUL set up. GET A DAMN POWER PLAY COACH its not that hard.
The team lost 1 to 0 in the first OT. So Henrik did shut them out for 60 minutes but if you remember after that game even Holteby said he wasn't tested. You know Henrik was tested in that game. And @ThrSage if you recall last years team lost so bringing up last years example does not hold water. Same crap different year. It's Henrik or nothing. I believe its on the coach and his style. No balance. Not enough Offense and hasn't changed PP even when personnel has changed
Some of our forwards look exhausted because Torts stays with a crazy rotation of using only 8 of the 12 for the majority of the game. Dorsett played well last night and only play about 8 minutes. It's coaching insanity.
Expecting way way to much of Henrik to pitch 2 shutouts to win 2 games. He needs SOME offensive help
@ThrSage they lost 2 games 1 to 0 and 2 to 1 in OT They scored 54 seconds into last nights game. It's an almost impossible task to LOCKDOWN a team for the final 59 minutes to pit
Like i said days ago torts has got to go with his side kick.. players are to good to be playing like this his system stinks..... and slather has all but sign sealed and deliverd richards pink slip.. is it me or richards shot is like 10 mph not hard at all thats why they allow him so much room on power play . And this del zaster guy is killing us trade him already id rather have bickel in there. Not for nothing asham and dorcent played good when they had a chance this doushe coach over plays players and burns them out power play cant get any worse let asham smash and goto net with dorcent cant do worse then richards or del zaster
I'm not balming Nash for any of these losses and he certainly can't be compaed to A-Rod's playoff failures becasue Nash hasn't been in them too often. Eevrytime he touches or get near the puck he has 2-3 guys on him. He should be looking to pass more when that happens but from what I've seen most of the Rangers stand around and watch when he has the puck so in most cases it's difficult to make a pass. He will be better under a different system I believe.
What a bunch of cry babies!!!
We got outplayed, period!!! Out hit for the 1st time in the series, and couldnt win a faceoff all game.
Nash is having a bad series, but he is hardly Arod!!! Its his 1st season in NY, which I think under the circumstances, he had a pretty good year!! As far as the playoffs, its been 5 games. He has the winning assist in game 3 and almost won game 2, but hit the post.
Only than a Tap in PP goal by Ovechkin, he hasnt really done anything this series. Would you all want to cut/bench him?
Win one tomorrow, and its a 1 game series.
Man up, and Lets Go Rangers!!!
For all the complaining about lack of goals & I understand why cause there is a lack of goal scoring what is not being discussed is our inability to lock down a lead like last year. Too many times we have scored a goal then given one right back. Last years team would have won last nights game 1-0 if it had to. Or ket it 1-1 until w found a way to score like Game-3 & Game-5 last year. This years team consitently gives up leads. I will remind everyone the LA Kings won a Cup by scoring 57 GOALS IN 20 GAMES!!!! NOT EVEN 3 A GAME AVG!!!! While giving up ONLY 30 GOALS!!!! or 1.5 AVG PER GAME!!!! The Rangers are not the Hawks or Pens they don't have that talent. They have to win by playing lock down d & thye are not!!!!!
IMO. Torts must set Richards and Nash tomorrow and insert Miller and Kreider. They could not possibly be as bad as those two.
RICHARDS MUST BE BOUGHT OUT THIS SUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ThrSage long and needs to change. If its Sullivans job to run PP than it still falls on Torts to fix it cause Sulli works for him. And I believe with each passing year he doesn't fix it than Henriks window for the top prize decreases. It needs to get much better and Torts needs to lead by example. Last said on this subject except LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!!
@ThrSage You have some valid points like i do believe the better defenses including the goaltender will have a better chance at winning a cup but defense only does not win cups. You have to have a balance and torts brings no balance of offense and defense. however the game is definately more ope
@ThrSage Great comments Mr. Sage. You are definitely a "shut down" defense man. You bring a big picture perspective to this blog and I thank you! If more of our fans watched The Rangers and watched other teams in the playoffs and while watching asked themselves, "What am I learning about playing and coaching in this game?"....rather than watching through an "I'm Right and You're Wrong lens!"......there would be more appreciation of what a great coach Torts is and more appreciation what a great recent version of Sather is!
@TruBluEsp I agree whole heartedly. Also I'm sick and tired of them continuing to reverse the puck. It's like they are auto pilot and the Caps can anticipate there every moves. The same holds true for their PP. Too predictable and mechanical. Pressure the Rangers points for immediate success
@jplcrusader you do realize Torts only plays Dorsett like 7 minutes a game. And when he's out there he is causing trouble.
Two more things....richards played the worst game Ive ever seen him play, he gave the puck up every time he had it. And also I dont like how the caps are hitting, they seem to come yup high with every hit.
@jslnyr1102 your right on. And Brassard has been one of their few offensive sparks. Anwser me this . When was the last OFFENSIVE player to flourish under Tortarella. He exiled Gaborik, is in the process of destoying Kreider, Nash is struggling. Is he now gonna kill Brassards offensive game? Coach needs to look in the mirror.
@AL55S @ThrSage Thats a good point & I agree. We needed to score on at least 1 of those 2-PP & if we did that game was over. caps were reeling mentally ready to go down & we let them up. We had control of the Game & series & we let it get away. I am just saying on the whole, all year we have been unable to protect a lead as where last year we did. Like in Games 3 & 4. Those games should not have been that hard. However your right asking a team to protect a 1-0 lead is next to impossible...but I think u now get my point.
@Fleisch14 I agree this series as far from over. Get it to Game 7 and anything can happen. But what I do believe is that the majority of people on this blog have had it for wretched PP this team has had now for every year this coaching staff has been in place. I think Torts is a good coach but he needs someone to smack him upside his head and wake him up to the reality that Sullivan is NOT a good Asst. coach running the PP. Needs to either get rid of Sullivan or bring in another asst. coach with a fresh idea of how to run the PP. I cringe to think where this series might be if we had even a middle of the road PP. With even a average PP, this series would probably be over. Game 2 and 5 would have been Rangers wins.
@scrangersfan That is ridiculous!!!!! Yeah we lose by 1-goal in OT & lets panic & put in 2-rookies. What are Phil Esposito in disguise? As for buying out Richards you only do that if u need the Cap room cause u r bringing in a replacement. There are lots of guys who had bad year in their 30's then turned it around I will give you 3...Ron Francis, Brian, Trottier, & oh yeah a guy named Messier!!!! He is a creator not a goal scorer so those guy are usually effective until they are 35 or 36. I just don't understand the hate for rRchads. he is a good guy w-a proven track record. He scored the biggest gooal of the year for us last year. We are going too have to buy him out eventualy but before we do that lets not ruch to judgement on a guy in a lock out shortened season!!!!
Those are all valid points. Torts critics have valid points as well & it remains to be seen if he wins a Cup here or if he gets fired w-out getting the job done. It's nice to have a discussion w-someone who may not agree w-me but makes rational well thought out points.
Thank You for the compliment, it's nice to hear & that's a really good point that people come from the " I'm right ur wrong lens. Glad to see there is at least one other guy who sees what I see about Torts I was beginning to think I might b wrong.
@EHBIGAPPLE @ThrSage open. The two line pass opened allowed the long pass into the zone which makes the neutral zone to be penetrated easier. And I do believe torts is a good coach but not a great coach. A great coach would be able to fix the PP. He hasn' even tried except to change personnel. It's been bad for
@PenaltySh0t @jplcrusader i hear ya pal. dorsett is probably still trying to find his game after missing so much time and 7 minutes a game is barely enough time to get it going. but you could bet prust would have had something to say to chimera after the hits on clowe and stralman. thats all im trying to say here. someone needs to stand up and say enough is enough.
I also wanted to say that I agree he is a good not great for the same reasons u do....PP Eric etc. Great coaches are the proper adjustments w-out losing their core beliefs. Torts needs to learn how to do that here or he WILL get fired w-out getting the job done.
@AL55S @EHBIGAPPLE @ThrSage As one of the more critical voices on our coach I appreciate your balanced comments Thr. There are some things he is undeniably good at, no question but I still don't like him for several reasons, some of which you brought up. In a nutshell he's a 2 dimensional thinker in a 3 dimensional game IMHO (completely missing the untangible "human" dimension which separates good coaches from great ones) . Hockey is way to fast a sport to think so if a coach gets too into their heads it stifles their games and cuts off the flow, instincts and intuition necessary to win. All the positives on our coach you brought up are true I believe, and yes, who the hell is going to replace him. His system is very sound in today's game, yes - but when a system, even the best one is static and unyielding it fails. Imagination, creativity and loosening the reigns of control are what is needed - and ADAPTABILITY
Also I agree about his asking the fwds to stauy back & not pressure the points not only stifles the offense cause it tilts the ice it also wears out ur team. Plus it doesn't work against teams w-guys like Carlson & Green or Ottawa w-Karlsson. Its why we struggle to beat them last yr & lost last night. U can block lots of shots but eventually they get thru. I wish he would vary it up
U make some very good pointsabout Torts offense & I agree w-them Torts needs to loosen the reigns on offense or he won't win a Up. We spend far too much time behind the Net. Players also at times play hesitant & less creative because they they don't want Torts benching them. So I agree he has his faults & if he doesn't correct them we won't win the Cup. @ThrSage @AL55S @jslnyr1102 all your stories of gretzky and 20 years ago are true but most of that was when the league was playing all bets are off playoff hockey now its an open ice type of game with no clutching and grabbing allowed, no 2 line pass and a hooking penalty called when you take one hand off the stick etc. Also torts won in Tampa by riding the Boulin Wall to victory same as he is trying to do here but doesn't work most of the time. It just wears your team down too much. He needs to grasp that the other team can't score if the puck is in the other end of the ice philosophy rather than his system which allows the ice to be tilted for most of the game and hoping your goalie bails you out.
@ThrSage @AL55S @jslnyr1102 I get your point on defense and backchecking but I'm talking offense sysytem. the Rangers goal scorers are out of position on offense because of his system 3 players are constantly behind the net and rarely have people parked in front. They would rather have them off to the side making deflections rather than getting slot shots or top of circle shots with the goalie screened. And coming into the zone all they seem to ever do is skate into the corner before even looking for a shot. They virtually cut down there own angles to a good shot saving the goalie from a tough save.
@AL55S @ThrSage @jslnyr1102 @AL55S @ThrSage @jslnyr1102 You make some good points. Torts is too stubborn about some things & his inability to fix the PP is going to cost us a Cup if he doesn't get it straightened out soon. However ur he wants players to do things they are not capable of is way off. All coaches at least the good ones want that. Yes goal scorers need to score but they need to do it in a defensivly sound way. All the Cup winning coaches demand that. Bowman,Arbour, Keenan, Babcock, Lemaire, on & on. All great players revolt against that or adapt. The Red Wings & Pens narly revolted when Arbour demanded that of them. However, they eventually adjusted & won Cups. Guys who are not defensivly responsible while also scoring goals are not winning players. When he coached the Oilers Sather used to tell young players when they joined the team"you know whats the most impressive stat of all the goals Gretzky scores is? How many empty netters he gets every year. U know why? Cause I trust him to be on the ice & protect a one goal lead". Gretzky in his book talks about how when they were swept by Isles in 83 he & Lowe walked by the Isles dressing room expecting to see them celebrating instead what he saw was the Isles beat up w-ice bags all ver their bodies. He said thats when he realized what it takes to win. throwing yourself in front of shots & going to the dirty areas to score goals. The next year they beat Isles 1-0 in Game-1 & didn''t look back. Yzerman has said the same thing. He realized to win he needed to score less & play more d. Lemiux too. A famous story thats often told is in 1990 Messier grabbed Jimmy Carson by the throat & told him"I don't care how many golas u score if u don't back check I am going to kick your ass"I could give u many more examples. The poinnt is yes Torts wants scorers to play D. thats cause its how u win a Cup. Torts did the same thing in Tampa. Lecavlier was resistant & he benched him. Once he got w-the program he became the best 2-way player in the game & they won a Cup. Today Lecavlier says he didn't always like Torts ways, but he made hima better player & they won a Cup. Torts knows what it takes he has done it before. If he gets the right players & if he gets a little less stubborn he will do it here.
@ThrSage @AL55S @jslnyr1102 If Torts spends 4 to 5 hours watching tape then why can't he see that his PP philosophy doesn't work and fix it. Sounds like a waste of tape watching . Also Torts tries to turn players into something they are not. Offensive players who are goal scorers are paid to score goals not to work the corners and be out of position to score. Kreider was fine in playoffs last year and although i think he needs work, he has to be allowed to dowhat he does best and thats score. Also being a human YOYO going back and forth from hartford to NY , with one time not even making it on rte95 before he had to turn around and come back does zero to help your confidence. I Truly believe Torts does more harm than good. He is too stubborn and his PP failures alone should make be held accountable
@AL55S @ThrSage @jslnyr1102 BTW he is not in the process of destroying Kreider. Its the opposite he is protecting him. He i sees things we can't see. Like he said the other night in his Press conference.. "no disprespect to you guys but we spend 4-5 hours watching tape & breaking down the game"From what I have read Kreider has been awful in his own zone & struggling away from the puck. he doesn't want him to become rattled. We caught lighting in a bottle w-his goals last year but he was exposed defensivly by Devs. I put the Stats in a comment a week or 2 ago. He was on ice for I think 5-goals in dev series. Torts critics who Kreider as an example also don't want to face the fact that Kreider struggled in Hartford this year & when he was w-us. I love the kid. My friends niece dates one of his former teamamtes at BC & I spent some time w-him. He is a great kid.. The other thing about Torts is he has a history of developing yong players. Lecavlier, Dan Boyle, Richards, St. Louis Stepan, Staal, Mcdonough, & others. He knows what he is doing w-Kreider. next year when he has a full training camp & its a full season where if he makes a mistake it won't be so critical, then Kreider will be a regular contributor.
@AL55S @ThrSage @jslnyr1102 I never said he loved him. Im just pointing out to al for all the "Torts stifles players like Gabby" critics that he had his best year ever playing under him. Thats cause Torts pushed him to be a better player. Not a guy who didn't practice when he was sore or who floated out of the defensive zone to get brekaways. When Gabby played the wat Torts wanted him to he got ice time & flourished when he didn't play the way he wanted him to he sat. Also Torts didn't exile Gabby. We took our one tradeable assett & traded him for 3-quality players. @ of which hve upside. We did that to become a deeper more complete team & to free up Cap space to sign Stepn et al; in the off season.
@jslnyr1102 @ThrSage @scrangersfan He scored a very big goal against Caps & he was fine last year overall. I have my concerns about richards & he has to be bought out within the next 2-years. All I am saying is don't buy him out until u have to. When either the amnesty is going to expire or u need his Cap space...otherwise he may go elsewhere & be productive then we gave him away for nothing. U also can't underestimate his leadership qualities. The fact is even if we do buy him out we need another playmaking center cause no way Miller is ready for that next year maybe in 2 years but not next year
