Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record reports that despite Mats Zuccarello officially re-signing with the Rangers this morning, he will not be in the line-up vs. the Senators tonight as the Blueshirts will stick with the same group that tied a season high five goals against the Flyers Tuesday night.
Gross adds that Henrik Lundqvist will be back between the pipes for the ninth straight game.
Zuccarello will be wearing his familiar #36.
Here's Zuccarello on being back with the Rangers (via Gross)...
“I just have to do my job and do what I do best and try to create some offense and see what they tell me to do and I’ll do that,” said Zuccarello before being asked whether he thinks he can pick up right where he left off in the NHL from last season when he finally was starting to look comfortable. “I hope so. Obviously it’s a little different game over here so it might take me a little bit of time. The system here is clear so you just stick with the system and it will come automatically. I’m happy to be back and see all the guys. I just have to come and do what I do and we’ll see what happens."
...i know Zuccarello just signed this morning, but I'm sort of surprised he's not right in there. Only 16 games left, if the Rangers signed him to help this team, why is he not in the line-up.
...not surprised to see Lundqvist back in there. Got to assume, Biron is likely to get the call Saturday night in Montreal.
The original plan isn't working. We need him to play! Lets not make the same mistake we made with Krieder.
I would have liked to have seen Zucc inserted on the 4th line instead of Pyatt, who is worthless. I know that makes our 4th line kind of an offensive line, but so what. Zucc-Newbury-Asham could actually put the puck in the net. You'd also have had the option of using Zucc on the PP. Plus, Zucc would have had limited minutes, which might have been all right given it's his first game back / jet-lag, etc.
giving him a night for jet lag?
it always seems easier to fly in this direction, but maybe that's just 'cause i live over here
WHAT!!!!!! No zucc. Then what the hell did we sign him for? Does Torts think that 5 goal game is going to be the norm around here? We NEED goals Zucc scores goals he has to be playing tonight. Tonight's game better not end in a shootout with the Rangers needing a goal to win.
@KevinDeLury Gotta think Pyatt/Boyle/Newberry would be one of the odd men out for Zucc. no?? Hopefully we see some fire from them since they know their spots are in danger.
I don't know if it is just me but I would love to see Lundquist in net Saturday at Montreal. I know he needs his rest but giving him off every time we play in Montreal seems like we are admitting defeat. I mean the guy is one of the best goalies in hockey he shouldn't be afraid to play anywhere. I would go into Saturday with him in net and use his past struggles as a rallying point for the team.
Maybe the fact that Zucc is 2 feet tall and has never contributed a thing in the NHL are some of the reasons he'snot in the lineup?
I'm okay with the same line-up. We won 5-2 last game. Normally Torts would shake things up when a new guy is healthy or ready to play. The fact he's sticking with something that worked...is shocking
I think a big reason why zucc isn't playing tonight is the Rangers haven't yet decided the futures of some of these bottom 6 guys. If zucc is as productive we all hope he will be, I don't see a place on the roster for pyatt. Granted, the Rangers could simply make room on the roster for zucc by simply sending Newbury back to Hartford.
@TheNYRBlog exactly what I was thinking. How much could it really hurt to put him in immediately
@TheNYRBlog didn't you say that the lineup shouldn't be changed after a good win or two? I.e. Boyle coming back.
Maybe with Zucc sitting tonight we'll see some fire from guys like Boyle, Pyatt, and Newbury out of fear of being scratched on Saturday.
Everyone knew hank was sitting when the rangers go to the house of horrors... Great that we play Pittsburg twice next week..... Ughhh
Jim Cerny just tweeted that Zuccarello is eligible to play tonight: https://twitter.com/JimCerny/status/317324005281501184
@TheNYRBlog dude let him practice on a full day
Torts probably want him to watch for 1 or 2 games before inserting him. If the Rangers sputter offensively tonight (against a team that actually plays defense) Zuc will be there next game. I guess with Henry in tonight the concussion rumors can be put to bed.
@TheNYRBlog you gotta use reverse psychology with Torts
@TheNYRBlog obv he's not in Torts shape yet.
@maxrokz @KevinDeLury Can't take Boyle out of the lineup with Powe already sitting, it destroys the PK forward depth, which is much thinner as it is with Halpern gone. I think Saturday it should be Zucc in for Newbury and taking Boyle's spot in the top 9, and Powe in for Pyatt on the 4th line with Boyle and Asham.
@Jbianco That was just speculation by me. Who knows, maybe he will play in Montreal. Especially if they win tonight.
@thenyrblogneill I hear you Neill, but with just 16 games left, not so sure now is the right time to evaluate these guys.
@jeanine1994 Should be in shape. Just played a full KHL season and is familiar with Torts' system.
@acquafredda That was a longer win streak. This was one game. But yes, very contradictory on my end.
@KevinDeLury He's had one pre-game skate with the team, and they're coming off a 5 goal outburst. Lineup should be the same outside of the minor swap of Powe for Pyatt for PK purposes. Leave the top 3 lines alone for tonight, and if they don't score at least a few goals, dress Zucc on Saturday.
@TheRealVinnyDel Only 16 games. No time for practice. Get him on the power play.
@Betweentheworlds Staal played half a season and playoffs with a concussion. Just sayin'.
@kc571 He's played a full year in the KHL. I think he's in shape.
@jtf1218 @maxrokz @KevinDeLury we saw what the PK would look like on Tuesday when Boyle was in the box-not want to see Nash on the second PK unit. My personal preference would be Pyatt sitting and a fourth line of asham Boyle Newbury because it gives them toughness but more likely Newbury will be sent down and Pyatt will stay on the fourth line.
@TheNYRBlog exactly right. I said the same thing to Jen earlier. It's bs
@jtf1218 You think Iginla's going to sit if Pens score five goals the night before he shows up?
@TheNYRBlog needs conditioning and a full practice. Be reasonable.
@KevinDeLury and of course that's one of the things that fueled my rant yesterday, as well as my own undiagnosed concussion issue from kick boxing - I just have to trust at this point that the docs of a professional sport known for concussions are the best in the biz, better than my doc in the '80s, and that he's been carefully screened, but I've had 6 concussions now and I know how hard a mild one can be to diagnose. My gut tells me he's fine though and our instincts if you really listen are over 90% accurate
@TheNYRBlog in tort's shape tho? system wise too? waiting on fasth too. get er done and in here. lightning in a bottle please!
@TheNYRBlog torts is a moron.
@jeanine1994 I'm not either. But he's here, so get him in the line-up.
@TheNYRBlog you know why, Torts is not too high on Zuc
@jeanine1994 Kreider didn't sit & watch a game after being recalled. What's the difference? Don't think Iginla's going to watch in Pitt.
@jtf1218 @KevinDeLury @JoshKaye I agree that Torts probably just wants to give Zucc a practice to make sure he is ready to work within the system. During the game is not the best time to get the cobwebs out. We will know for sure on Saturday. Would be surprised if we don't see Zucc then unless he was truly brought on to challenge Kreider for a spot (which would be surprising too).
@KevinDeLury @JoshKaye Kreider's been back and forth with the team this year, and he's played on North American ice all year. Plus he's been traveling back and forth from Hartford, not Russia. I just think they need to get Zucc a practice, or at least another skate with the team, before he's in the lineup. He should be in against Montreal either way probably.
Interesting that you mention Kreider, because signing Zucc was sort of predicated on Kreider being a wild card the rest of the year. In between the beginning of the negotiations and the actual signing of Zucc, Kreider has turned into a totally different player.
@TheRealVinnyDel Zucc has been in Rangers system the last 2 years. I think he knows it. But I do understand where u & Torts are coming from.
@TheNYRBlog he will be replacing pyatt on third line soon
@TheNYRBlog they just won 5-2. Also ahl plays torts system. KHL whole different system. Needs one practice
@TheRealVinnyDel But seriously, he just finished full KHL season so I think he's in shape. When Rangers called up Kreider did he sit a game?
@TheRealVinnyDel I'm a Rangers fan. That's not in my vocabulary. lol
