What's So Great About Ryane Clowe?
Written by Kevin DeLury on .
Ok, I've held off on this long enough. One name I've seen thrown around this blog with regularity lately is San Jose's Ryane Clowe.
I've heard plenty of you, especially his agent "slapshot13j", tell me how he's "perfect for Torts' system" and even compare him to Ryan Callahan.
And if all your chatter wasn't enough, I have to see TheNYRBlog's favorite rumor monger Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun tweet this...
Several teams interested in San Jose's Ryane Clowe. I'd put the Bruins, Sens, Leafs Rangers and Habs among a list of lots. #NHL

In what is the final year of his contract that pays him $3.625 million this season, Clowe has yet to score a single goal, while adding just nine assists.
The 30-year old Clowe, who is currently suffering from a shoulder injury, has seen his points reduced drastically the last couple of years from 62 (24g, 38a) in 2010-11 to 45 (17g, 28a) last year and now just nine in 25 games this season.
...so wait, the guy everyone is drooling over has shoulder issues, zero goals this season, three years of declining point totals, an expiring contract that would allow him to sign elsewhere this offseason and according to most reports would require a big package to get? Yeah, sounds awesome. Why don't the Rangers just offer JT Miller and a first round pick for him? (sarcasm folks, sarcasm).
...or how about Gaborik and Richards for Dan Boyle and Clowe? (yet again sarcasm)
...what concerns me the most about Clowe is his declining point totals. You have to wonder if at age 30 his physical game isn't finally catching up to him. If he's not able to use his body effectively he will not be a productive player.

Great post Kevin, I couldn't agree with you more. Does this guy remind you of Redden?
He was also washed up when he was signed by the Rangers. If we're going to trade, trade to improve not to trade just for the sake of trading.
%s if we can get him for a reasonable price (picks) then im all for it..throw in hamerlik too %s %s
@TheNYRBlog why drool over Clowe? Cause the dude contributes on and off the ice ... youtube.com\/watch?v=MnrV_g…5u4
@TheNYRBlog that's only one less than Brian Boyle, who is a BIG part of this team ...
@TheNYRBlog Me? I don't want Clowe. Did you miss the sarcasm in my earlier tweet? Thought the play from the bench gave it away ...
@Garts2point2 im hoping its a pick or two.. Certainly not any roster players. Maybe hamerlik
@TheNYRBlog @ScottyHockey if its Boyle for Clowe sure, but a nothing of great value no. Certainly not Gaborik or MDZ.
Rumor has it that the LA Kings are interested in Gaborik, but would need the Rangers to take back about $3+ Million in salary from LA. If that is the case, then I'd like to see
the Rangers pry Dustin Brown from LA. Both playerrs contracts end at the same time.
More than likely the Kings will try and move Dustin Penneri instead.
However, between the 2 Dustin's I'd like Brown. He's another Ryan Callahan, is gritty, has scored half of his 11 goals on the PP. What do you think?
@howiehockey I think instead trading Gaborik, they should fire Tortarella and you will see a revitalized Gabori of old.
scrangersfan...I'm with you on that one...I don't think Torts has a clue. I hear tonight he's going to put Stepan on the point.
What is going through his mind....Richard, Nash,Gabby, Stepan at the points...you have to be kdding me. Tell me since Richards has been a ranger how many goals has he scored from the point.
The aforementioned players have to be down low. BTW, when was the last time you saw a Ranger go straight toward the net.
Have you watched our opponents lately....straight to the net.
The rangers have one (non-cap hit) buyout left...either at the end of this season or the end o f2013-2014. Unless Richards makes a major turn around he's gone.
The only real decision is whetherGabby is traded at this seasons trade dedline, at the draft or during the summer.
@howiehockey Brown is a stud. I had him on my fantasy hockey team a year ago. He can score 30 and hits everything that moves. I actually would make that trade.
@KevinDeLury @howiehockey I know, i'm just saying Brown is awesome. I would take him in a heartbeat.
@TheNYRBlog i have watched many SJ games and Clowe is a spark plug. He can lay out some nasty hits. Fights. Reminds me of a nastier Dubinsky
NOOOOOOO, JT Miller left the ice after a collision with Lundqvist in practice...... NOOOOOOOOO
@slapshot13j Considering you're the only one mentioning this, I don't see how others here can provide an update.
First of all I would definitely do Gaborik and Richards for Clowe and Boyle. That would clear up 7 million dollars in cap space one. Two Brad Richards blows....
For the clowe issue, maybe he hasnt been scoring because their team has not been scoring. They have less goals then the Rangers I believe. Either way he still does the other things, hits, blocks shots... He is like brandon dubinsky in a bottle.
@slapshot13j You may do Gabby/Richards for Clowe/Boyle but I can tell you that the Sharks wouldn't.
@KevinDeLury @slapshot13j you are insane. We have 3 top end Dmen when healthy, most teams have one. Our D is fine. We struggle for offense and you want to trade our offensive guys for guys with less offensive talent? Hell no.
@ivanricov @KevinDeLury @slapshot13j @JoshKaye @Lordstanleybroadway OK, OK I tried to resist but I have to stick my 2 cents in now. Boyle is 36 - a shadow of the "Ranger killer" we remember. From the article Clowe is questionable, both health wise and contractually - and you want to do what??? Trade who????? Can we please set our sights on building sustainable success rather than tearing it down. Yes, yes, given Richey's play and Gabby's questionable shoulder and oft injured career trading them is a viable option (if anyone would take Richey's huge contract that is) but let's look for young up and comings and a 1st rounder in this year's fat pool. Not geriatrics. Please!!! OK! Phew. thank you. 2 cents has been delivered!
@KevinDeLury @slapshot13j That is possibly one of the worst sounding trades I've heard in a very long time. I'd rather not do that. At all. If we're trading Richards and/Gaborik, gimme a couple of guys in their 20s.
@JoshKaye Thornton and Boyle for those two and u for a deal. Nash loves Thornton they were unstoppable in Olympics together.
Not sure you can call a 1 year drop a drastic decline. Daniel Sedin had 104 points 2 years ago and 67 last year, is he done too? That being said, I think the asking price for Clowe is ridiculous and is probably being driven up by the perceived demand. If they want a guy that is a grinder and can chip in offensively, maybe look at getting Dubi back. Dubi was not a great 2nd liner, but I think we'd be more than happy with him on the 3rd line. Just a thought.
@gravey94 Agreed. I loved his play, even when he wasn't scoring. dubi and Calli were the heartbeat of this team. Now we have half a heart beat.
@gravey94 I'm including this year, which is well behind last year. So two years in a row.
@gravey94 aren't we all sitting here calling out Brad Richards for his 1 year decline from last season?
Why not B Boyle for D Boyle? Dont have to change the number or the name on the back. Convenient!
No more getting players 30 and over, try the kids in our system. Cheaper that way plus frees more cap space to sign our good players. Want a tough line? How about Haley Newbury and Mishinter? If Torts takes the leash off of them,..
%s "if his physical play IS finally catching up w\/him".not "isn't". Just an%sI. 100%% agree w\/all your points tho, said same thing
@TheNYRBlog is Ryan clowe going to solve all the teams problems? No. But he's more the answer than another soft perimeter skilled fwd
@jheuss17 I know he's another super skilled perimeter player. May be an @NHL caliber player but not the answer to @NYRangers problems
@PuckCentral he could play a few games before deadline and if NYR don't like what they see, still have time to make a move or 2
@PuckCentral this won't prevent them from making moves at the deadline. Looks like he's good around the net too.
@NYR_FullTilt @TheNYRBlog not just a better version but a bigger and nastier version
