When the Rangers take the ice against the Washington Capitals tonight they could have a very different look on the power play as Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that Derek Stepan worked the point with Michael Del Zotto on the first unit during practice yesterday.
Brad Richards, Rick Nash and Ryan Callahan were the forwards.
The second unit consisted of Dan Girardi and Anton Stralman on the points with Marian Gaborik, Carl Hagelin and Chris Kreider the forwards.
...the Rangers have tried Stepan on the point before in his career with negative results. I remember him have trouble holding pucks in at the blueline and Torts abandoning the idea quickly. But hey, things are so bad with the extra man unit, I'm down for anything.
...i feel like a broken record, but if Stepan can get the puck on net from the point, while the forwards actually generating traffic in front there is a possibility of turning it around without having to bring in outside help (ie Zuccarello).
...i also love that Torts has Kreider on the second unit. Get that kid in as many situations as possible.
Speaking of the Rangers power play...
NYR asst Mike Sullivan likely on short list for top job in old haunts TB and BU...Probably best not to include NYR PP stats on resume— Larry Brooks(@NYP_Brooksie) March 24, 2013
...maybe Sullivan getting the Tampa job is what the Rangers power play needs.
...assuming not too many Rangers fans would be upset if Sullivan got the job.
Tampa fired head coach Guy Boucher last night.
@TheNYRBlog benches gabby but plays Richards who has no skill anymore and u Ike this asshole coach loser
@TheNYRBlog Certainly not coachs either.
we need STAALSY back. Our PP looked so much better when they took richards off the point and replaced him with staal but then he got hurt and we looked like poop again
Whatever. with these players, you could have the guy that planned the Lee Harvey Oswald prison transfer running the PP and they still should still be scoring. Nash, gabby, Richards? C'mon. There isn't a solution on a chalkboard. They need a legit point man.
@TheNYRBlog too weak a shot from the point.
@TheNYRBlog this seems to sum up what was supposed to be a great season.
It amazes me that Torts preaches accountabilty and he is held to the same level. Sullivan is a joke as an asst coach he alone is in charge of the power player and defenseman since he has been here its been dreadful....let alone he alone burned out the defenseman through out the season. Torts wants a physical game but dresses no physical players.... the idiot that he is... u expect gabby to grind? he isnt a grinderand niether is most of the team put him back on his natural side u idiot Kreider isnt a grinder but yet u play games with a good talented kid cause of the arrogance u for some reason think u have..... ur cocky and disrespectful when called out and it needs to stop,,,u have not won anything in NYC for u to act like u have ....the team is a reflection of what ur system right now same as it was 3 years agio nothing was learned wehn u dress no physical players...and ur players played scared as they are now... u fell in love with RUPP = Really Useless Physical PLayer and the guy sucked to all end couldnt win a fight with even light weights but u had a guy like Scott and sat him and let him walk....for nothing... u sit Bickel give him not mins a guy that sticks up for his teammates, Haley u just sent down....and so on sather yank his cord and put him on notice..... this is NY Rangers Hockey not the sweedish elite league.....
Wow the genius behind the behind the bench now realizes the PP needs changes! Shocking I ddn't know he even knew what a PP was! He can't get fired soon enough for me!
@TheNYRBlog I really like that idea actually. He is awesome at setting up plays. Better than Richards being there.
@TheNYRBlog right handed he can move the puck we need that!
Gaborik had his best game in months against the Panthers, but gets demoted to 2nd unit. I have to say, I like the move. He gets SO many shots blocked on the PP and the one that led to the empty-netter at the end of the last game was atrocious. I was cursing at my TV.
@TheNYRBlog I actually think this could work given the way Steps has played lately
@TheNYRBlog I always liked that idea when they first tried it and don't know why they abandoned it so quickly.... oh wait....
@AnnoyingJoe How about somebody other than Cally standing in front of the net, screening the goalie and occupying the other team's D?
@TruBluEsp 100%. Except without a legit point man to get shots thru a screen is pointless. Hah! Pointless.
