Staal Still "A Ways Out" In Healing Process

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

In an interview with Viv Bernstein at the New York Times, Carolina's Eric Staal gives us this update on brother Marc's eye injury...

“He’s doing O.K. It’s just about the swelling and taking time for everything to kind of settle down. Obviously, everybody saw the shot, how hard it was, but he’s continuing to meet with the doctors daily, and they’re giving him positive vibes and signs, so that’s a good thing. But he’s still a ways out with the healing process and everything that goes with it.”

...wow, 12 days since Staal took a puck to the eye and the swelling has yet to go down? That can't be good. Would love to know what Eric's interpretation of "a ways out" is.

...absolutely baffling that the Rangers are releasing no information on Staal. I know Torts likes to protect his players, but it isn't like no one knows he was struck in the eye.

did you guys see what happened to Peter Harrold on saturday. He took a deflection to the face, albeit not nearly as hard as the one staal took, and was wearing a shield. The shield broke but did not shatter. He got a nasty gash in the forehead but got stitched up and came back out. I wonder if a shield would have shattered and potentially blinded staal...

Yeah. Leave it to the Rangers to call it an "upper body injury".  Torts:  "He's out.  That's all I'm going to say about it."

what happened to the 2-3 weeks report that we got recently?  or is that what he means by "a ways?"

@TheNYRBlog So I guess we can assume that Hamrlik will be a fixture on the blue line for now?? Anyone from CT that could move up?

It's not about protecting his players Kevin, it's about control. The guy is a control freak and he doesn't think we deserve the info.

Rangers won't be a good team til he comes back. Everyone likes McDonagh and Girardi, but staal doesn't get enough credit... He is our defense

Totally inexcusable that the rangers aren't releasing any information on Marc. People want and have the right to know if he is going to be okay. This isn't a banged up shoulder where releasing information could hurt him people are worried he is going to lose his vision. Fans who invest time and money into this team have a right to know.

I wish Marc a speedy recovery, and he is a difference maker on this team.Rangers have to find a way out of their funk and somehow stay in the playoff race until Staal returns. Then things will start going our way and we'll win more. He's that important.
