Speculation: Martin St. Louis To The Rangers?
Written by Adam Herman on .
Damian Cristodero, a Tampa Bay Lightning beat writer with whom I am familiar and respect, has initiated speculation on Martin St. Louis' future with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Though he admits there is no indication that either he or the Lightning have taken any steps towards moving him, it's a discussion that likely will happen. The Lightning are not in the playoff picture and are, as Cristodero says, a "team in transition." St. Louis, at 37, might decide he wants to move on for one last chance at the Stanley Cup, which likely is not going to happen in Tampa Bay in the next year or two.
Though St. Louis does have a No-Trade Clause, it seems like a given (though not guaranteed) that he'd approve a move to the Rangers. He'd stay east, move to a team that theoretically should be contending in the next couple of years, and would be reunited with Tortorella and Richards. St. Louis has been linked to the Rangers in the past.
St. Louis has an astounding 37 points in 28 games so far this season. Of course, pretty much anyone on Stamkos' line is going to put up gaudy assist numbers, but he is still a quality offensive player despite his age. It's unknown if the Lightning have any interest in moving St. Louis or if St. Louis is open to it. And who knows what the asking price would be. But should St. Louis and the Lightning reach the decision that a trade makes sense and St. Louis has a short trade list that includes the Rangers, rendering his market pretty weak, the stars could perhaps align for Sather to make a difference-making move without breaking the bank to make it happen.

Depending on what we'd have to give up to get him, I'd be open to bringing in Marty, given his history with Brad & Torts. I'm not 100% sold on the idea, but if we're going to jump back on the "bright, shiny free agent" bandwagon, I'd much rather have it be for Marty rather than Iginla, who would be a complete fish out of water.
If St Louis is looking to win one more cup and conidering moving to the Rangers then he is barking up the wrong tree. Even if they make te playoffs they'll prbably get knocked out itr first round. Pittsburgh or Chicago would be my choicer maybr Anaheim.
Yes. GREAT IDEA!! let's trade more of our future for another aging superstar who's going to fade faster than a winter sunset! It's the Rangers' way and we fans just LOVE consistency!
@TheNYRBlog great we trade Gaby for him and watch him sit on the bench to learn defense
I highly doubt that the Bolts would take on Gabby's salary next year, considering that by moving St. Louis' contract, they are essentially mailing it in this season.
In order for this scenario to work, the Rangers would have to get creative, and possibly do a three way trade.
Totally agree! Can the Rangers be any worse with him in the line up?
@TheNYRBlog gabby for st louis ? Marty is older , smaller and at half the price . Id make this trade we need cap space next year
@TheNYRBlog never mind St Louis. Kreider has just scored again for the Whale. Surely he gets fast tracked for tomorrow's game?
@TheNYRBlog would only make sense if they'd take one of this years signings that isn't panning out (let pyatt go play with his bro?)
While the connections to the Rangers make sense you have to assume Tampa would want young talent in return. No thanks.
know why doesn't Sather tradethe entire Rangers team to Chicago fort eh Blackhawks? Problem sloved!
@TheNYRBlog Does the lack of off puck moving\/cycling in the offensive zone this season bother you?
@TheNYRBlog Agree Kevin - and lack of physical presence in the defensive third - tomorrow nite could get ugly
I love Marty st. louis.... even though i doubt they trade him... He would be a great fit in Torts system (heart and soul guy) clearly as he already won a Cup with him
@KevinDeLury I never claimed to be an advocate of the trade. Just reporting what is :)
St. Louis is effing awesome; don't care how old he is. Another RW though. And likely to come at a very high price.
@rangersfan and if anyone can guarantee to make him loose any semblance of scoring prowess it would be the rangers! But hey give him Crybaby money and let home perform like Ritchie! Ughhh seriously the team needs to work through this not keep switching bodies - one guy even Nashty isn't going to make this team a serious cup contender - they have to want it and play as a team! Not even Gretzky could carry an entire team by himself. Another overpaid over-the-hill superstar isn't the answer.
@Herman_NYRBlog I don't get why he would want to come here but I gladly take him.
