The New York Rangers (16-14-3) lost to the Ottawa Senators (19-9-6) by the score of 3-0, tonight. For a box score go to Yahoo! Sports.
...if we learned anything tonight, it's that the Flyers are eff'n awful.
...disgraceful display by the entire Rangers team to play that way with just 16 games remaining and the season hanging in the balance. Absolutely no effort or fight tonight.
...the Senators could have played man down the entire game and I seriously doubt the Rangers would have scored.
...smart move sitting Zuccarello tonight. Couldn't have used him on the power play.
...i know Torts likes to show his team film, hope he forces them to watch Chris Neil causing havoc in front of the Rangers net on Benoit's power play goal.
...my ears are still ringing from the guy playing that damn horn.
...guess Richards performance against Philly was more of a mirage than him turning the corner.
...starting to rethink my stance to hold onto Gaborik. I'd take a bag of pucks for him right now. Althought I'm not sure the Rangers could even get that for him.
...what the hell happened to Stralman? He's been brutal lately, especially when the opponent is in transition.
...and don't even get me started on Hamrlik.
...didn't the Rangers bring Asham in to replace Prust's toughness? Way to spark the team tonight big guy.
...with all the head shots Lundqvist has been taking lately, the last thing I wanted to witness tonight was him constantly getting run over. I almost had a heart attack when he dove out to stop that breakaway.
...on the positive side, I really liked Kreider's game again. He was looking to shoot and even dumped a Senator player standing in Lundqvist's crease.
...Miller reminded us all tonight that he's still a rookie.
...at least the Rangers next game is in Montreal. They play well there, right?
Id be nice if the rangers didnt miss on shots....this game would have been in ot if we didnt miss fire one 3 grade A shots, no matter how bad they played. Cally hasnt been good recently either...
I just don't know what to say anymore. Lundqvist and Kreider are the only ones playing like they care, no inspiration for this team at all, the coach sucks, there's just nothing left to say. Just gotta wait for this horrible season to go away.
After the latest edition of "The New York Ice Follies" - damn!!! They exposed just about every weakness this hockey club has. Maybe Torts can learn something from last night about how a good coach operates. They knew us! They owned us!! Disgraceful!!!
Once again, I am posting for the Rangers to make not minor changes, but MAJOR changes. What makes people think we can win with this team - or with Zuccarello added? WAKEUP! I have already written this team off for this year. I am hoping the Rangers take advantage of this small window of opportunity ( trade deadline) and unload some of the dead weight on teams that might be desperate now. Gaborik, Richards, Pyatt, Boyle, Ashem, Hamrlik. And at season's end, fire Sather and Torts.
No effort at all on the power play. When Ottawa cleared the puck, the Rangers skated up to it, like they were taking a dog out for a walk, even with the Ottawa player bearing down on the them! WTF! No fire to their game. Maybe their flight attendant on their private jet was an Ottawa fan, and still bitter from last year's playoffs, drugged the rangers drinks on the trip over. Also why does no one park themselves in front of the goaltender? Cally does it for the most part, but they need a big body in there. Isnt that where Boyle scored most of his goals in last years playoffs? Also, how are they going to score on a power play with 2 Rangers behind the opposing goaltenders net! I'll give Ottawa credit for being an awesome defensive team, but can someone take a slapshot that puts fear into an opposing teams shot blockers?
I think the Senators defense was outstanding. We should of at least capitalize with the PP #MatsZuccarello.
@TheNYRBlog I'm going with "they lost b/c it was Kevin's turn write the recap" theory. No way this team is that bad. Right? *crickets*
I agree with everything you posted Kevin. There was no bright spot on this team last night. The entire team with the exception of Hank should be sent to the KHL and play for one of the Sbierian teams. Once the season is over I'm so done with this team,I can not wait. What DISGRACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And one other thing, their PP is horrible. I was watching the Islander/Flyer game in between periods last night and the Islanders move their feet and the puck, they have flow. And we all know that they aren't loaded with talent. But they make it happen.
The Rangers? Skate to the blueline....slow down......maybe dump it, maybe carry it in........drop pass to the player behind you AT the blueline......scramble, dump the puck down the boards hoping your teammate will be there............wing in in front.....hoping that a teammate will be there
I guess I am an outlier, but when the score was 1-0 I thought each team had a similar number of good scoring chances. Bishop made some good saves and got lucky a couple of times. There were periods where the Rangers held the puck in Ottawa's zone for entire shifts. Yes, one needs to score to win and that is an issue, but deep into the 3rd period I thought the game was relatively even. The biggest difference was that the rangers couldn't get anything going on the power play and I blame the coaches for that. Ottawa puts a lot of pressure high up on the point guys and the team was not prepared for that. If you don't move the puck quickly you are screwed.
P.S. I am as frustrated as the rest of you.
I'm not suggesting passive play at all what I;m saying is collectively they just aren't that good and the fans expectations were and are way above their abilities.
@TheNYRBlog time to fire torts and hire Guy Boucher. team has tuned him out.
This team for the most part of Hank and 19 other guys. Yes Nash and Stepan have played well but without Hank they maybe almost winless!
Newbury played well tonight. He had a scoring chance and denied 2 Ottawa goals.
BTW, he is much better than Boyle.
Anyway, so there is a quote in today's Post buy Mr. Smug (Tortorella) about when he plans on inserting Zuccarello into the lineup. “Zuke is not in the lineup tonight,” Tortorella said. “We’ll talk about that tomorrow, if he plays.”
Seems to me as if he has no plans on even playing him at all. But he'll continue to put Boyle and his whole ONE GOAL out there on regular shifts!
And another thing, he insists on playing the same lineup that won against Phillthy. Fine, they played a good game. But he goes ahead and with the exception of the Stepan line, MIXES THINGS UP!!! I don't freakin understand it anymore.
@TheNYRBlog Is it me, or do the Rangers play most hockey games like they don't like playing hockey?
Kevin, unfortunately it's time we all start realizing that the 2011-12 season was a mirage. This is the 8th or 9th best team in the Eastern Conference. That's it. They can't compete with anybody in the top 5, save Boston, and that's only because they match up so well there. Wait until next Wednesday when the Iggy'd up Pens come to town. They're going to beat us 8-1, we can't skate with them, sure as hell can't score with 'em, and we'll probably be coming off three straight losses since we're shit in Montreal and we can't seem to figure out Winnepeg this year. I'll keep watching cause I'll always keep watching. But I don't think this is our year.
I think the biggest issue (in recent weeks) is Torts changing the lines every game. These guys play with no familiarity; they have no idea where their teammates are going to be. They need to get used to playing with the same couple of guys each shift, that's the only way they're going to create chemistry.
@TheNYRBlog We ended our recap exact same way lol. Someone asked me if there's a problem in locker room. Beginning to think there may be
@TheNYRBlog Gaborik lacks effort. Boyle is on ice too much. Team has no heart.
Don't trade anyone except maybe Gabby. This team isn't going anywhere. I'm done rooting for this team this year. I'm going to focus all of my attention towards putting the hex on the Pens.
@TheNYRBlog Kevin be proud nhl announced that the Rangers lead the league in Shots on boards. Something to be happy about.
Well, as Lincoln once said: "“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.
I really find it hard to beleive that Dubinsky, Feds, AA and Prust are the difference in this team. In reality I know the team wasn't as good as their record lst year indicates and although those players did bring some grit it isn't the difference between last year and now. The truth is they really weren't that good it was Hank and the shootout.
I think the problem is simple. In order to win consistently in the NHL you either have to have dominant talent, OR simply work harder than the other team - want it more. Very few teams have that dominant talent. As for working harder, there is something about coming to NY that makes that difficult. Aside from last year and a couple of years when Messier was here you simply can't find that level of commitment here for ANY reasonable length of time. MAYBE it's a coincidence, but I dare anyone to deny the fact. I have been watching this team since 1978 and have lamented their "work ethic" more over that time than anything else. Last year was a true joy to watch and I didn't even care if they won because work ethic is such an exotic bird in these woods that it simply has to be appreciated when it is seen. (That said, last night was not the worst they have been in this regard by a long shot, but Ottowa is simply better)
@TheNYRBlog still not sure what lundy was saying to kreider as he cleared the crease
@TheNYRBlog You would think after being a Ranger fan for 30 yrs, I'd be used to this frustration but I am not. Towel in hand 4 this year...
Just terrible last night. But I think I've had my mental white flag moment as far as expecting them to do well. I don't see how they can turn it around and do something impactful. Accepting this team right now is just as good as the Rangers 2 years ago actually makes it sting less. I watched that game shaking my head saying I'm a fool for getting excited about this game. The difference between this team and the pens, chi, bos, and others at the top of the league are so drastic. Pens score with their eyes closed, by the way. I still LOVE our youth. Kreider has been showing signs that when he gets going, he's going to be great. Tough decisions to be made. One easy one: get rid of all those "depth and character" guys we brought in this summer and just try again to get that right. I wouldn't be upset to see the Rangers stay put at this deadline. It's not the year to push for the missing piece when it's clear this team can't even keep its own pieces together. Man what a disappointing season.
Gotta say, when Kreider dumped that Sens player in the crease, I didn't like Lundquist's reaction. Granted we don't know exactly what he was saying to Kreider, but Sam and Joe seemed to think he was saying "You didn't need to do that", and thats what at looked like.
With the lack of heart this team is showing right now, Kreider can hit anything he wants, any time he wants. If Lundquist wants to complain that nobody clears the front of the net, don't also complain when someone does.
I know Hank's an emotional guy, but I was very surprised at how vocal he seemed last night. Very animated after goals were scored or plays ended. Not sure if its frustration with the team in front of him, or what.
I thought the Rangers played a solid road game.... if you can ignore that lack of scoring thing... that lack of grit... that lack of heart... that lack of desire. Oh, wait. You're right. That performance was disgraceful. And don't get me started on Hank apparently giving Cally all sorts of crap on that screen, inadvertent tip, etc. I've been advocating Gaborik's departure for a month now. A scorer of Gaborik's ability only helps if he, well, scores. Unsure if it is an injury or the need for a change of scenery. Either way, Gabby is not cutting it with the Rangers. Then, again, most of the team isn't either, but most of the team doesn't make Gabby money.
The genius behind the bench blamed the Rangers play on the fact they lost some " grinders" to the Nash trade and free agency! If those 4 players who scored about 20 goals among them are the reason this team isn't playing well then the problem is much deeper that we've been seeing!
@jerrydyrsten As good an excuse as any right now. lol
@johnpal Without Hank almost winless, the mantra of every NYR fan
@johnpal Yes, but you cannot give up tons of odd-man rushes! Hank cannot, has not, and will not ever be able to get a shutout when the other team has tons of odd-man rushes and breakaways! They wear a goalie down. Hank has not been a problem at all this year! He is 7th in save percentage! That is damn good.
@johnnyb3910 hank should pay more attention to the regressing he has done this year and work more on his GLOVE SIDE HIGH.
@johnnyb3910 How do we know that Lundqvist wasn't telling him "thanks kid?" Sam and Joe really have no idea what was said.
@johnnyb3910 I think he is frustrated. And I maintain that if this team doesn't get their crap together by the end of next year, I fully expect him to look at a team that will get him a cup.
@johnpal Well he is spot on in that regard. While the scoring is not there, the aggressiveness is definitely not there. Last night we allowed odd-man rush after odd-man rush. We got shoved, pushed, and abused and we just take it. There is no spark. Most of the times goals come after something sets the team off.
It's amazing that he has the 7th best save percentage. If you didn't watch a game this year and just looked at his numbers, he would look like 'good' goalie. Given what he has to put up with game in and game out, it's incredible what he has been doing. It's terrible that he has to stand on his head every night to even give them a fighting chance.
