The Rangers fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins today by the score of 3-0. For a box score, click here.
Little to no positives to take away from today's game... looked like a typical Rangers-Pens game to me.
If not for Hank, the Rangers are probably looking at a 4-0 deficit after one and possibly Glen Sather working the phones in a room somewhere, if he isn't already after that third period.
Rangers came out flying to start the second, but couldn't finish their chances. Gaborik and Nash both had good chances on Fleury in front of the net in the second but couldn't put anything away.
Nash pointless in his last 3 games, all losses. Not a coincidence, the entire offense runs through him.
Could be time for another roster shake-up once again, calling up Kreider couldn't hurt at this point.
Hamrlik's half-assed attempt to block the cross ice pass from Jeffrey to Dupuis to make in 3-0 was pathetic to watch. Rangers are beginning to discover why he was placed on waivers by Washington to begin with.
Still waiting for Torts to reunite Nash, Stepan and Hagelin. A good, proven scoring line against a high scoring team in their building, only seems logical to me.
Raise your hand if you were bleeding profusely from the ears after being forced to listen to those brutal Penguins cheerleaders on NHL Network...
Rangers return home on Monday to face the Hurricanes.

Oh and for those of you who say theyd rather have Haley in ten Asham you are nuts Asham can be hugely important when he plays and his absence has been felt . He skates well can score, agitates and will fight any time ... We underestimate the importance o his absence for sure... I like Haley's heart but he just cant shoot and barely can jold his stick
I think that (and I have bee. mong the ultra pissed off and annoyed over this teams' play) that we are forgetting that Staal is a major piece missing. Add that all the games missed by Richards, Girardi, Callahan, Nash, Del zotto, Asham and Mcdonough and (without playing the blame game) has really hurt this teams' record. I think that with a healthy lineup this team is extremely hard to beat.. Beside Pittsburgh and a bandful of losses to inferior teams that Id take my chances with in a 7 game series, this team can be very good. All that being said a winni g streak on 5 games could leap us into 5th before we know it so there still is time to work shit out ..I think priority number one is a defenseman with a bi shot who can quarterback the powerplay gonly had 3 or 4 in the last few games , see Chicago, montreal Pittsburgh , Anaheim they all have dmen who score !!
Glen Sather should be dialing the number of the Whale coach, and bringing Kreider back up. Give him the minutes Boyle was playing every night, he literally could not be worse. And he can actually score.
Even if we wanted to make trades, the only players that other teams would want are our young guys that we need to keep. What are we going to get in return for Boyle or Pyatt? Not much. If we trade Gaby, we'd get back draft picks and prospects. Fine, but that means we're giving up on this season and I don't think Gaby is "done" at 31. Sather not going to trade golden boy Richards, and who would take him and his giant contract anyway? We don't have much in terms of picks or prospects to trade unless you're willing to give up Kreider or Miller. Thomas isn't worth much. Zucc is not the answer and neither is Kreider at this point, he needs to stay in CT for the rest of the season.
The team we have has tons of potential and is just not performing. To me, that means Torts needs to go.
Well, being the eternal optimist the most positive thing I can say after this all too predictable loss is that there are still 20 games left (or 21?) and we are well within striking distance. No need to panic. Other positives??? Wellll? Hank was sterling again and seems to get better day by day - the 2nd goal was weak but I think it was deflected. After a 1st period that left me scratching my ass they played with good energy and were more physical until the game was clearly out of reach. That's the good news. I did think their fight level was up a notch today and we sorely need that. Another possible bit of good news is that Gabby seemed much more involved to me as far as scrumming along the boards for loose pucks than he's been in a while. If an injury or aggravated shoulder was responsible for him playing scared perhaps it's healing now. He played more like a player who wants to stay on the team. The thing that is unfathomable to me though was the lack of any offensive presence against a team whose defense and goal tending is their achilles heal and they didn't test Fleury at all really. Alsoon a positive note I liked how they played Sid the Infant. After the 1st where he was on fire they really cooled him off.
What should they do going forward? IMHO I think they should get an extra pair of hands from Hartford - Kreider would be the logical choice and bring up McIlrath as long as they give him at least 10 minutes a game and see if he can do anything at this level. He can't do a worse job than Hamrlik. At least he's big and mean and can clear a net so that our beleaguered Goal tender may actually be able to see a shot once in a while. BTW does anyone know anything about Sauer? If he's gettiing better at all?? The other thing I'd like to see is them bring Clowe to Broadway..
So the question I have for the Rangers is how come I, a mere fan who knows less than 1/10 about hockey than the coaches, GM etc. can see through all these bad moves and predict the outcomes better than they can??? Even if Hamrlik gets his act together he's not worth that price tag which could have been used to bring in some real talent. Really??? Come on!!! BTW everyone I hate Torts at least as much as you do but I don't think firing him at this point makes any sense. Can his reactionary short-sighted ass after the season is over!!!
I have been watching Rangers hockey since I was 11 yrs old, and that was 48 yrs. ago! Believe me, this team can not and will not turn it around as is. I know that many of you are die hard fans, but the reality is, there are too many players on this team that are just not good enough. This, along with a lack of depth in the system, and a coach that has lost his team spells season over. Hopefully, they can make some trades to bring in some young talent to get excited about for the future. And anyone who thinks Zuccarello is the answer, OMG, you need help!
BRING HIM BACK UP... HE CAN SCORE
@TheNYRBlog shoulda got drunk tonight. Make another awful loss go down easier.
Torts can get his system working with a " us vs the world "approach, a buncha grinders, hard nosed players. But he cant possibly get guys to buy into that system with superstar talent in the lockerroom
After seeing what Tampa Bay is doing to Carolina, Monday is a must win game. Need some confidence for the Devils game otherwise I would imagine the Rangers lose both. Monday is a must win game no question. Lets score some Fucking goals, excuse my language...
I was absolutely livid after watching the game today, putrid offensive effort, Hank's effort wasted, but i've camed down and collected my thoughts. Any time our team loses, it's understandable to get frustrated, we are Ranger fans, we are passionate and the lack of offense is driving me absolutely nuts but if i've learned one thing is that it's all about getting into the playoffs. The Kings were horrid first half last year, but they put it together late and got hot, boom, they win a cup. Now do I believe that's what the Rangers are gonna do? Probably not BUT, it's still too early to be calling for jobs, cutting players, etc. I know it's hard to have a wait and see attitude but coming from me, a overwhelmingly negative thinker, I think they have the talent to put it together and at least make a legit playoff run. JUST GET IN!
Please put me out of my misery...I have been following this team since the early 60's, and the current version, looking great on paper, is sinking fast...hope springs eternal, but I really cannot derive ANY enjoyment out of watching them at present...so, what's the cure here, if any? Hard to envision any way this is going to turn around...call me depressed.
Time for Spring cleaning! Besides the usual suspects (Gaborik, Richards, Boyle, Pyatt, Halpern, Hamrlik, Eminger) most importantly, Sather and Tortorella must be dispatched immediately. How can we have an organization where we do not have a SINGLE defensman to be recalled from Conn. when needed? I look at other NHL teams and they bring up young players who perform repeatedly. Look at Ottawa with all of their injuries and recalls, and they're still a better team than the Rangers. This falls on the shoulders of Sather who needs to go. Tortorella has lost this team, he too must go. If this team remains status quo, good luck selling tickets next year!
Ya know how you can buy a product and the company gives you 15 or 30 days to return it for a full refund. We the Owners should have placed that clause into their trades. Buy a guy for $3.5 million and he's WEAK. ok pay him his per game rare and ship him home after 5 games if it doesn't work out.
I WANT MY MONEY BACK!
%s %s kev please look at my tweets from %s game , I must have tweeted 60 things about how god awful the announcers wer
@slapshot13j how many goals did Kreider have for us this year? 1? Kid needs to be in the AHL. I'm not defending Boyle here, but at least he wins faceoffs and can kill penalties.
@ShreddyMercury they do miss having an agitator.
@cb1 Has the team stopped listening to him? I noticed that Dave Maloney and to a lesser extent, Duguay said that the team's grinder style wasn't going to work. I was kind of surprised to hear them say that. It felt like that Tort's coaching approach was not going to work.
Is it the 800 lb gorilla in the room?
Has the team stopped listening to him?
I think that it's a little to early to say. I bet it is a conversation that is being had in other places like MSG though.
@MikeBlue Respectfully disagree, except on the Zuc comment. Also we do lack depth in the system - I agree with that too, oh yes I hate Torts as well (expressed by you in other comments) so I guess I don't disagree after all lol. So like myself you've seen everything from the GAG line, to the short sighted moves of '94 that brought us a cup but doomed us for the 10+ years that followed to when Nedved was "The Franchise" - God only knows why we're still Rangers fans. I would say though that I do believe we have the personnel to make a run this year and get in the playoffs. When all the Cup talk was happening before the season you did not hear that from me because I knew we were still missing 2 or 3 pieces from the puzzle and this opinion still stands today. A couple of smart moves from Slats (good freakin luck) could not only get us in this year but get us deep in the playoffs - just my humble opinion.
@slapshot13j Kreider very much wants to be back in a Rangers uniform. Has like 5 goals in his last 8 games, good ones too.
@vatsupper8 Torts has a hard time adapting to his personnel IMHO - don't change the core of the system as it is generally effective in small rink NHL Hockey, just modify it seeing that we are not as inept offensively as last year (though you'd never know it) and we've lost some energy players that makes his grinding system work. He does not seem to understand the subtleties of coaching, like human psychology for example and all the hockey knowledge in the world will not help if you're a reactionary short-sighted individual who only sees the game on 2 dimensions. If you were to post this comment last year while they were enjoying success my response would have been more or less the same. Never liked this coach from day 1.
@slapshot13j I would agree. We're still very much in the chase but we need to find some confidence and quick. Not even testing Fleury against a team that is not terribly strong defensively is baffling.
@JoeSmith Someone apply duct tape on that fat bitch's throat ;)
@Newsted126 Have to score goals before we even start talking about PLAYOFFS
@petergoode When you're in an offensive slump good old fashioned hard work is the only thing that will get you out. Worrying about scoring goals will sink you deeper. Just play with passions, get physical and focus on doing the little things right.
@MikeBlue Mike, while were at it, lets get rid of Madison Square Garden. It's only 2/3rds done and the fucking Islanders get to play at the new Barclays next year :) IMHO The Rangers will be fine. They will make the playoffs. Where they go from there is anybody's guess and that comment applies to almost all teams that get in. Gaborick and Richards are proven stars in the NHL and should return to form. Hamrlik goes when Staal returns. Eminger will see less time at that point. Boyle's problem is that he is a big man that does not play a "big mans game". He is a below average fighter and as a result, his effectiveness is diminished. He is not feared like a normal 6 foot 8 person on the ice would be. They need to get much more production from the bottom six. Will they? I don't know. They will start to get production again from the top six. They are all proven in the NHL.
@RobertChiarello @MikeBlue It's always baffled me why Boyle has not learned how to play a big man's game. He could be "huge" for us slamming bodies, intimidating players and standing in front of the net. A waste unfortunately if you ask me so why? The answer: it all comes down to heart. I use to kick box and I'm a small guy so when I sensed that my opponent had no heart I knew that no matter how big he was, or how good his technique, it didn't matter. He was mine and he's going down.
@McPhee21 @cb1 I completely agree he has to learn it, I just feel he should learn it up at the NHL level with guys lIke Callahan teaching it to him.... And has for him not hitting, get over it. That is not the kind of player he is... He wasn't doing it in the playoffs last year and you weren't on his case... Fact is we are not scoring enough goals, and we need more people that can score... I think Thomas even deserves another shot
Awww....you're sick of the defensive responsibility crap huh?
Well tough. Kreider better learn to not be a defensive liability...or he is going to rot in CT.
Get used to it.
The good news is while he's plying in CT, maybe someone will teach him to play hockey like a man and he will learn to throw a freaking bodyceck once in a blue moon,
@McPhee21 @cb1 I am sick of this defensive responsibility bull crap. I am worried right now about putting the puck in the back of the net. The defense can be taught on the go, he is a smart kid and talented hockey player... he will pick it up as he goes along if you dont bench him after every mistake. The fact is we need goals ASAP. Miller, Halpern, Boyle, Haley, Pyatt, Powe, Richards, Gaborik, Asham (when healthy) don't score. That is 8 out of 12 forwards. The time for bringing in defensive minded players is over. I want someone that can shoot and score, I want a system that allows are stars to be stars. Last year it worked, but this year we have a different team. If you throw a defensively responsible player on with Kreider, such as Callahan he will be able to guide him and even cover for his flaws. The fact is Kreider is more capable of scoring than half if not more than half of our lineup when he plays his game. For instance, in the playoffs last year when John Tortorella even said "we are not going to force the system on him we just want him to play his game", and he was the best offensive player on the team. Enough of this bullshit system bring up Kreider and let him do what he does best , put the puck in the back of the net... same for Gaborik and Nash... enough of this BS.
You keep on bringing up Boyle...we are talking about Kreider right? Just for the record...I hope Boyle is dealt at some point.......
Now in Boyle's defense..yeah...not the best skater...but at least he's not a defensive liability on the ice.....and at least he throws bodychecks....unlike Chrissy Kreider...who is as soft as a marshmallow.
@McPhee21 @cb1 I am just saying, for 4 of those games he was playing at maybe 40% with that injury, and the rest he never had constant line mates. At his age building chemistry is huge, Haley has been around the block... plus I am not comparing those two, since Haley is a 4th liner. I want Boyle out and Kreider getting 3rd line minutes every night, no matter what... that is the only way he grows
