Using 52 points as the projected cut-off to make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference, Justin Bourne at the Backhand Shelf says the Rangers need to go 8-7-1 in their final 16 games to make the playoffs.
10 of the Rangers final 16 games are on the road. They also have to play the Penguins, Maple Leafs and Devils twice in those 16 games.
The Rangers play in Ottawa tonight and Montreal on Saturday.

...you would hope the Rangers could manage basically a .500 record the rest of the way, but one look at their remaining schedule and I'm not so sure it's going to be very easy.
...however, if Richards can build on his performance in Philadelphia and Miller can revive Gaborik, a 8-7-1 record should be doable.
H/T to reader TheLink44.
You can't tell me they'll go into Ottawa and Montreal and come out with two wins with this current team. If they do, I'll be swallowing some crow. But right now, my expectation is they may play well tonight an lose a tight game and then get embarrassed in Montreal, again....
If they just play hard like last game and Torts keeps the top line together I they have an excellent chance of getting in - these teams are all beatable.
How about who cares who we play!!! Get in the playoffs and win the whole damn thing. Really ... Does it matter if we lose to the Pens in the 1st round or conference finals? Sure, you want to go into the playoffs with some momentum but screw the seedings crap. Last year's finals were a 6 seed against and 8 seed. Playoff hockey is totally different game from the regular season. You start fresh and go from there. LGR!
%s really guy? "If a team plays mediocre, they might not make the playoffs". Ur better than that. %s w\/ this one
The only way 8-7-1 gets the Rangers anywhere in the playoffs is if they roll off a 7 game win streak going in...of course that means that half the fan base will have already jumped off the GWB. Honestly, I'm happy Iginla went to Pittsburgh instead of Boston. Pitt didn't need more scoring so it's a bit of overkill. Boston has defense and goaltending, adding a goal scorer there would have made them lethal. IMO. the next week will tell us all we need to know about how the Rangers will fare in the playoffs this year. 10 points up for grabs against good teams. Less than 7 and I think any thoughts of a Cup this year are just a pipe dream, maybe even any thoughts of playoffs.
%s Amazing how in the span of 8 weeks it's gone from "%s WILL win the Cup" to "I just hope %s make the playoffs"
We will either get roughed up by the Bruins or completely obliterated by the Penguins now that they have both Morrow AND Iginla. Talk about leadership, they now have 3 Captains.
@TheNYRBlog With what transpired last night; I think it's in their best interest to finish higher than 8th.
just making the playoffs won't cut it - we really need the 6th spot - this should be on everyone's mind. I don't see how we can match up against PIT, BOS, MTL in a 7-game series to begin the playoff run. Our only legit shot is against the SE winner (#3) - WIN or CAR at this point. Build some confidence before we possibly advance against one of the elite teams in the East. If we limp in @ #8, we'll probably go down in 4 or 5 to the Pens losing by 2-3 each night like the rest of the season so far. It seems pretty simple / reasonable to me - we need the #6 spot to advance to the Conf Semis.
@TheNYRBlog honestly. How do the Penguins have cap room for these moves ?
I agree we got to shoot for 5th or 6th spot to give us a good chance in the playoffs.
More importantly we just have to be healthy and get hot in the playoffs and anything is possible.
@TheNYRBlog Penguins seemingly have it all wrapped up. Rangers need higher than 8 seed
@Drewsis No idea what you're talking about.
@Ranger Joe I actually think the Boston match up is not that bad. It's a physical matchup which plays better for the Rangers. Where they tend to struggle is against speed/skilled teams that are quick in transition such as Pittsburgh and Montreal. Obviously Winnipeg would be the best matchup, but I don't see the Rangers being consistent enough.
%s i can c that from ur extremely obvious headline. An 8 seed who finishes home stretch playin.500 hockey mite not make it? %s?
@TheNYRBlog Who do u think we are,Flyers fans? I dont follow, and block uneducated nyr\/hockey fans.U might not have that luxury i guess haha
@Drewsis Yes, obviously I'm stating the very obvious with that post. Figure I have to dumb it down for you guys sometimes. ;)
