Rangers Could Be Interested in Rentals at Center & Defense

Written by Kevin DeLury on .

Steve Zipay at Newsday notes that if the Rangers want to upgrade at center or defense, several players who will be unrestricted free agents next summer might be available as rentals including:

C Stephen Weiss - 1g, 3a in 16 games ($4.1 million)

C Brenden Morrow - 5g, 5a in 21 games ($4.1 million)

D Doug Murray - 0g, 2a, -3, 38 hits, 37 blocked shots ($2.5 million)

D Ron Hainsey - 0g, 7a, +2, 8 hits, 58 blocked shots ($4.5 million)

...i've always been a Weiss fan, but he has had a dreadful start to the season, so maybe Morrow, who has played with Richards, might be the better option of the two. Morrow is coming off an injury plagued 2011-12 season, but looks to have turned it around so far this season.

...if the Rangers do end up acquiring a center, you have to assume Boyle is the odd man out. Wonder if he'd be part of the trade or simply moved to wing.

...as far as the two defenseman Zipay lists, I think I'd rather stick with what the Rangers have. To me Gilroy/Eminger is a better option as the sixth defenseman than either of those two. Plus I thought Hainsey acted like an obstructionist as a union rep during the lockout, so eff him.

Murray would be my first choice as a rental pick-up d-man for the stretch. I'm afraid S.J. would want too much in return. Ryan Clowe would be another great addition from S.J. but again, might require too much to get. A really good get is Steve Begin from Calgary. He has a very affordable contract ($525,000) plays all 3 forward positions, and is a gutsy, veteran, energy agitator.

Daniel alfredsson would be the greatest thing to happen to this team. I know it's a long shot but he would put our team over the top and bring in more veteran leadership.

@TheNYRBlog we need help on blue line , gilroy is horrible

@CaptCally24 Yeah, you'd like to see a guy who's supposed to have offense in his game to at least have one point this season.

@TheNYRBlog i personally would like our d men to play D .,i love delz and staal but they pinch and cause odd man rushes too many times

Morrow?  That makes no sense... Why would he throw away Captaincy at Dallas to join a team where he won't even be playing second line minutes?  Unless he bumps down Stepan, which makes no sense to me.  Stepan is starting to gain some confidence and get in the groove right now.  Also, we have to resign him after this season.

Weiss... lots of $$, having bad season.  Same dilemma on bumping Stepan... which would put Boyle into competition for Halpern's spot.  Wonder who would win there :P

Doug Murray is a big boy who doesn't always play nice.  Decent contract, too.  I think this is the only plausible option.

Hainsey plays big minutes in Winnipeg, but at $4.5 million a year and having a great season, he'll be pretty expensive.

Honestly, I don't think NYR is having depth issues at center right now.  Richards, Stepan, Boyle, Halpern, plus Miller learning to play responsible defense on the wing before moving to the faceoff dot again.  I guess if we don't sign Halpern next offseason...

@TheNYRBlog "Gilroy/Eminger is a better option as the sixth defenseman" than Murray/Hainsey??? You are out of your mind. M/H are top 4.

@ScottyHockey @TheNYRBlog Both would be Bottom Pair.

@ScottyHockey Screw Hainsey. Was obstructionist during lockout. Murray is solid. I think Eminger can bring same game. Why give up something?

@TheNYRBlog Hainsey s a better puck mover than DZ - he can worship Satan for all I care - and Murray is a beast, a replacement for Sauer.

@ScottyHockey @TheNYRBlog Murray has lost mobility, he's got lead in his skates, check out the fearthefin blog for more on him.

@TheNYRBlog @ScottyHockey A guy running around hitting to hit is ineffective compared to a purposeful hit. (See Del Zotto : Staal.)

@TheNYRBlog Ott would be a FANTASTIC fit on this NYR team. He would be the best Prust replacement I could think of. Good on face offs too.

@TheNYRBlog I don't mind either Forward, but where do they fit in with this group? Boyle seems obvious but seems sideways if anything...

I haven't watched San Jose much but I believe Murray is a crease cleaner. Despite his name he is a Swede so Henrik would know him. Morrow is grit and you can't have enough of that.

@AG_Blue  @prole30 He brings a physical presence for sure. I always felt that Eminger's physical game is under-rated and that if he got 10+ minutes a night we'd see it'd be more prevalent.

@TheNYRBlog If they can get Douglas Murray and keep the top 4 in tact of Girardi, Mac, Staal and DZ I would like that. Murray with Stralman.

TheNYRBlog

@adrec88 He'd be nice, but I honesty believe if Torts trusted Eminger he'd be ok in there. Also not sure cost on Murray.

@TheNYRBlog I agree. Been saying that for a long time. Don't see how Bickel is always chosen over him. Eminger is solid all can ask from 6th

Neither of these guys are giving me that old time feeling. Also, I alway thought Morrow was more of a left winger? I wouldn't mind Morrow though. I think he could be serviceable in a Torts system. And I pass in both of these dmen.

@TheNYRBlog I think that Boyle would be on the 4th line wing. Maybe instead of Ashem....and defiantly instead of Bickle.
