fair warning: if tonights game does turn out ugly, i'm ripping #NYR a new one in tonight's recap. i'm tired of beating around the bush.— Neill Fowler (@NYRblogneill) March 30, 2013
if there's one thing i find unacceptable, its mediocrity. this team is in the middle of their championship window despite what some believe— Neill Fowler (@NYRblogneill) March 30, 2013
I fired my shot across the bow. After Thursday's performance in Ottawa, I was hoping the Rangers would respond and show some life. Even against a team in a building where they haven't won in 3 years. What showed up tonight was nothing short of a disgrace.
Forget about the fact that this game was over 47 seconds in when Michael Ryder scored past the pylon named Steve Eminger and the statuesque Martin Biron who barely flinched as the puck went by him.
Forget about the fact that the Rangers have not scored on Carey Price in 252 minutes and 35 seconds.
Forget about the fact that the Rangers haven't scored on ANYONE in 127 minutes and 47 seconds.
Or the fact that the Rangers have allowed a power play goal in six consecutive games.
This roster, as construed, cannot win games on a consistent basis.
It's time for a change. A shakeup. Anything.
The coaching isn't immune from blame either.
The all too frequent line changes have got to end. Besides Hagelin-Stepan-Nash,(and their breakup is likely coming) it can't be too comforting that the other 9 forwards and 6 defensemen more often than not, come to the rink not knowing who they're going to line up with to begin a game.
Torts is getting a pass from me just for this season due to the lockout. But shame on him for not properly preparing himself or his hockey club for the lockout shortened season. But come next October, all bets are off regarding his employment.
It is absolutely stunning to me that with the amount of talent on the roster and the third highest payroll in the NHL is this inept offensively.
Ryan Callahan who willed the Rangers to wins earlier in the season, has played better without his stick, than with it as of late.
Marian Gaborik had a good first period on the fourth line, moved to a line with Richards to start the second and we didn't hear from him after. The guy is just far too streaky and goes into the tank when he struggles.
Brad Richards should be commended for his charity work in the clean up post Hurricane Sandy. But like Torts, his failure to prepare for a shortened season has led to him becoming a boat anchor not only on the roster but payroll as well and will continue to do so for the remainder of this decade if he can't find his game.
The Rick Nash honeymoon in New York is over.
McDonagh and Girardi aren't the same brick walls they were a season ago. Besides battling injuries at times, the only explaination I have for their demise this season has everything to do with the amount of ice time they've taken on in the last year.
Lundqvist's preparation was little more than a guy shooting pucks at him in Sweden. Far removed from the game experience he should've had with a team somewhere in Europe or Russia.
The horses that led the Rangers to the Eastern Conference Final last season have broken down. Unless something changes somewhere, the lackluster, underachieving, overpriced play at MSG will be nothing more than just another day at the rodeo for the foreseeable future.

I'm sorry but Nash has to be the most cursed player in the league. Here everyone thought he was finally going to get to play some post season hockey and it looks like he will miss the playoffs yet again. Not blaming him as he has not had a bad year, but he cannot catch a break. Seems like he always has a new coach in one way or the other. One thing is for sure, this team seems to lack chemistry and with Hank up for a new contract at the end of next season, I am officially worried...
I agree on the line change craziness. If we aren't scoring goals don't ya think Torts should change his strategy? Put some line together and leave them for a few games. The constant line changing is not working. I think at this point Torts is over coaching.
Call me crazy but I didn't think we actually played that poorly. Montreal is playing like we did last season. They are a better team. Strange year indeed.
@TheNYRBlog As a NYR fan living in MTL, that's the last time I shell out $400 to see them score NO GOALS in 120 minutes. Shake it up, Slats
@TheNYRBlog that's not to say the players aren't to blame, because they are. (ie: Richards)
@TheNYRBlog I don't know if I would call it "hate", but I think certain players are frustrated with Torts' overall philosophy.
@TheNYRBlog I think Avery may be on to something. It's hard to buy into Torts' system and mentality, especially when you can't score.
@TheNYRBlog Kevin happy Easter we need change yeaterday
Finally, someone put in words the way I and a number of Rangers fans feel about this team and the coaching staff. Nice work Neill.
The only comment that I disagree with is giving the headcoach a pass this season. He's lost this team and he should be terminated now!
Only thing that would have been less surprising than last nights outcome would have been if Jeff Halpern had the game winning goal...
It's not saying much, but this is just a strange year. It's like a scoring slump that afflicted one guy has become contagious and the whole team has got it now. It's a collective slump.
I can't blame the system because they still get their shots on goal -- even with all of those horrific blind passes -- admittedly, many of those shots do not amount to good chances. Someone on here mentioned the apparent surprise of a player receiving good passes from Zucc. They are truly discombobulated.
Gaborik put forth a solid effort last night and I know he and Torts had a good conversation. They both want to win.
I don't place any stock in Sean Avery's tweet because of the character he is -- there's just no way to know. And even though I don't blame the system and I have stuck up for Torts, I agree that something has to give. We need to shake things up and usually the coach is the one who pays the price.
There are no simple answers -- especially this year! I've been watching for 30 years and I don't remember seeing anything quite this strange. Of course in those years before the cup win expectations weren't that high. After the cup win expectations quickly dropped again. And after last year's solid season, expectation got quite high, especially with the addition of Nash. Now, rather quickly, expectations are beneath the basement. It's been a rollercoaster. I've never experienced anything quite like it as a Rangers fan.
One thing that has been a constant these 30 years has been the devotion of the die-hard Blueshirts fans. This is a frustrating time for us fans, to say the least, but I can't stand hearing, or reading, would-be fans coming in here and saying that my team sucks every third post. And saying that this guy or that guy sucks. For the most part, none of these guys suck (accept for maybe a couple). If you say your team sucks, then you suck! New York fans can be fickle to say the least, but we support our team through thick and thing, for better or for worse.
Nobody here can pretend to know exactly what the problem is (well, you can pretend). Some kind of shake-up would seem to be in order. My expectation have hit rock bottom as this season appears to be a wash. But I'm going to keep watching and I'm going to root for the Rangers no matter what.
Changes may or may not be made, but this group has every reason to put forth an impressive campaign next year.
LET'S GO RANGERS !!!!!!!!!
This team lacks a dominating physical presence both on D and Offense. As talented as the Rangers D are, (minus a couple of players) they are out-muscled in front of the net. They can't clear bodies nor the traffic in the crease to gain any upper hand. They instill fear and intimidation to no one. Same on offense, not one Ranger stands nor parks himself in front of the opposing crease to screen or bang in rebounds. That's why we don't score goals; every shot is taken from the point or circle and they are easily saved b/c they are easily seen by the goalie. We need guys who can get in the other teams' faces This is a highly talented team in many areas but you can;t win when you play soft. (think ala Adam Graves)
Don't care if they don't make any moves this season. Lost all expectations from this team this year now I'm just watching them grind it out and see what happens. I hope if they make any moves it's to fix the colossal error in deciding who the right depth for this team is. Let's let the kids on the whale get some experience and struggle and learn the game a bit.
Missing Marc Staal who I would argue right now is the rock of the New York Rangers... There is a reason he wears the A, and our defense has become a mess without him. Not saying that solves everything but I think he is the third best player on our team behind Nash and Lundqvist easily.
I still think this team can do something this year, but they have to find a way to get in. My only hope right now is that they wake up in the postseason, and become the team we all thought they should be
End of season headlines: " Blackhawks set longest point streak record, Penguins tie longest winning streak & Rangers set history with most consecutive games without scoring a goal" Slats dont wait till next year, can Torts now.
It's clear that you didn't watch this game.
A. Gaborik was united with Richards after about their second shifts, not at the start of the second period.
B. I guess you forgot Gaborik's breakaway in the first period set up by Richards?
i cant believe people are just giving up on the lineup that we have... all we really need is for gaborik or richards just one of them to snap out of it.. gaborik has good years ahead of him... honestly kinda hope he stuggles and we can resign him for a low price... this team can be good trust me... we need to run and gun a little more we have one of if not the best goalie and we have so much offensive talent we need to open things up a bit more and not play such a defensive style.. i strongly believe a guy like del zotto would have ten goals right now if he was on the penguins
Let the incessant whining and speculation continue...
Me? I shut off the game after the first goal 47 seconds in, then went back to sleeping off my hangover (Timezone is 12 hours ahead).
All the "fire Torts" guys are probably the same people who were calling for Tom Coughlin's head in 2007. 2 Championship rings later...
Personally I don't think it's Torts' system that is the problem here, it's that some of the players don't want to play it. A bunch of you mentioned failed fancy drop passes, firing stretch passes through the neutral zone with abandon. If they played the way Tortorella wanted them to play, they would SIMPLIFY, play fucking NORTH-SOUTH, and start connecting some passes. Ridiculous.
I'm starting to think the players are purposefully playing like shit because they want Torts fired.
@ivanricov I don't think you're crazy it was 1000 times better than in Ottawa, but they still scored ZERO goals. And they gave nothing in the third period.
if not a dominating physical presence, almost any physical presence ... this team has lost almost any kind of physical presence ... it's unbelievable!
@SA24 The only move I'd make is ship out Richards, Gaborik and Boyle on the deadline date.
Also terminate the coaching staff now!
@Josh6 Dream on Josh! It aint going to happen.
@Beckfan5 The breakaway was on a powerplay. Yes didn't last long on the fourth line but was bounced around a bit. My mistake
@JoeAntos del Zotto would have ten goals right now if he didnt miss the net wide on every shot
this whole dump and chase thing is the most ridiculous/frustrating part of this team. pee wee hockey teams play this style not f'n NHL teams.
@JoeAntos so you're saying fire the coach. agreed!
I'm starting to think the players are purposefully playing like shit because they want Torts fired."
that does happen. and avery, love him or hate him who gives a fuck, has close friends on the team. as andrew gross said in a tweet tonight, is avery saying what the players cant?
@scrangersfan lol the only move you'd make? Nothing is working on this team so I guess I'm open to mostly anything. That said, we are still in a playoff spot and if they can click by the time playoffs come, we're all singing a different tune.
@thenyrblogneill So creating scoring chances while on the PP doesn't count for anything now?
it was in the other thread with the game notes and posted on the blog again this morning, but ...
@ATCRyan re: dump&chase THANK YOU.
@IcyCup Who knows... it's not like Avery is a big fan of Torts to begin with, and is notorious for saying shit just to get attention and ruffle feathers.
@RyanStetson I was miserable, couldn't watch Rangers car crash. Kudos to MON fans for not rubbing your face in it. Sather has no choice.
