Powe on IR; Kreider/Mashinter Alternate on Fourth Line
Written by Kevin DeLury on .
Katie Strang at ESPN.com reports that Darroll Powe has been placed on the IR with a concussion. There is no timetable for his return.
...huge blow for the Rangers. Powe's acquisition not only improved the Rangers penalty kill, it also allowed Torts the comfort of playing four lines as he gelled real nicely with Asham and Halpern. Still have no idea how Sather got him for Rupp.
Meanwhile, at practice Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record says that Chris Kreider is still with the team and was alternating line rushes with the recently recalled Brandon Mashinter.
Here are the lines at practice...
Carl Hagelin-Derek Stepan-Rick Nash
Marian Gaborik-Brad Richards-Ryan Callahan
Taylor Pyatt-Brian Boyle-J.T. Miller
Arron Asham-Jeff Halpern-Chris Kreider/Brandon Mashinter
John Tortorella told Gross that no decision yet on whether Mashinter or Kreider plays tomorrow night vs. Canadiens.
...WTF? Why is Kreider alternating on the fourth line? Either put him on the third line or send him back to the Whale. Makes absolutely no sense.
...unless they just wanted to keep him around for one more practice and plan on re-assigning him later today. Either way, could the Rangers mess with this kid's head anymore? Terrible.

So tired of people whining about Kreider. This team's objective is to be a CUP CONTENDER, not constantly nurture an underperforming prospect and make sure his feelings aren't hurt. They'll use him where they need him, and if they don't need him he'll play in the AHL. You people make it seem like Kreider is the second coming of Christ here.... besides a decent playoff performance (most likely fueled by adrenaline and the fact that he hadn't played 82 regular season NHL games before it), Kreider has shown NOTHING that warrants top 6 minutes on an NHL team. The holes in his game are glaring.
I always see way more griping about Torts than is warranted, especially in regards to Kreider's development. Torts brought up half this goddamn team in the few years he's been here. Look how well Hagelin, Staal, and McDonagh have been playing.... just so happen to be products of Torts' development.
Also, slapshot13j, your constant complaining is starting to get old. If you feel that you would be such a great general manager and coach, buy your own hockey team and see how well you do.
First of all, I think your arrogance is shocking. You are telling people not to complain while that is exactly what you are doing yourself.
Kevin's point about Kreider on the fourth being a waste makes perfect sense. Kreider's trajectory is a top six forward and at worst, he would be a third line player Kevin is suggesting that he will not get the development he needs getting 6 mins of ice time on the fourth line. Either play him and let him develop or send him down and let him play and develop - it is that simple.
Also, you seem to be forgetting that Kreider came to the Rangers days after winning the National Championship with BC. I'm sure he wasn't 100% fresh after that. There is no reason to downplay what he accomplished in the post season last year. Miller showed brilliance in his first couple of games with the Rangers but has certainly slowed down a bit. Was his success strictly a product of adrenaline? If it was, he should probably be sent down.
Stall was already a standout D-men before Torts got here and anyone in their right mind would have brought up Hags or McD (which is also influenced by Sather). I am not taking anything away from Torts - I am a huge fan and I love how he sticks up for his players. I am just trying to take away from your misplaced self-perceived superior knowledge of what is best for the Rangers and their prospects.
That is all.
@TheNYRBlog seriously...Boyle is a 4th liner, put him with Halpern and asham and put Kreider with miller
Boyle should be a 4th line winger on this team. It's not a knock against him but I'd rather see Kreider/Mashinter on the 3rd line......lost most of you's.
@Beckfan5 -- Boyle's actually been our best faceoff guy. If you want him on the wing, maybe he can switch after he takes the faceoff.
@AG_Blue @Beckfan5 JT needs a speedy guy with hands like Kreider to make plays with. Look at Hags and Nashty... That's one reason Cally did so well with the kids line. Pyat looked good to start but has been quiet of late. Whatever happens keep the balance and roll all four lines!!!
@AG_Blue I didn't take that into consideration. Having him and Halpern on the same line would be useless then.
Why is it bad to have the kid on a fourth line? You always take such a negative view. How 'bout having him there gives the Rangers more scoring depth. Even if the fourth line doesn't get as many minutes, I think Torts would like being able to roll 4 lines...and have scoring be a factor on each.

I hate Boyle and Pyatt together. Such a waste having 2 bigs on one line. I think Boyle should be on the 4th and either Kreider or Mash on the 3rd. Do it "#the right way" Torts.
I agree, they're gonna ruin this kid.....let him work on his game with the Whale instead of jerking him around......on another note it seems like Torts is gaining some trust in JT Miller by having him out there in crucial situations in the 3rd period.....lets hope it works out for these 2 kids cause I think they both have alot of upside to their game....and they're still kids
@Dudeinski he looked horrible at the end of that game, no clue why he was on the ice. Almost had a crucial turnover if you rewatch the last 2 minutes and it was in the defensive zone...
never seen a hockey player stuck in limbo before, but Sather managed to pull it off.
Yeah, send Kreider down already. Too bad they called him back yesterday.
Mashinter should fill in nicely for Powe on the 4th line. Let's get that line going.
woah. im late to the dance obviously. just looked up mashinter's bio. 6-4 and 230? holy crap!
@TheNYRBlog couldn't agree more. Stop messing with Kreider's head & let him play or send him back. They're going to ruin a good thing.
Torts being Torts and even spoke of an injury today. Do the right thing send Kreider back to The Whale. Let him get his confidence back. That won't happen with 4th line duty. Big Joke !!
I'm honestly thinking there is someone else questionable for tomorrow otherwise keeping Kreider at this point makes no sense. (No I have no idea who but it has to be someone if Kreider is still around.) Either way, I really hope they know what they are doing cause from the outside it doesn't look like it.
@Melissa (angelzeyes2521) My guess is that whatever's ailing Nash they're keeping an eye on him to make sure he can play tom. night....I could b wrong...just a guess
@Dudeinski @Melissa (angelzeyes2521) -- good guess ... in this case, Kreider likely knows he's on call, so to speak, and it's not necessarily such a nightmare scenario ... I'd still prefer if he could have played all weekend ...
@AG_Blue @Dudeinski Makes sense. Agree Kreider should've played. If he doesn't play tomorrow (which I don't expect him to), I hope they send him to CT in time to play their game Wednesday night.
@Melissa (angelzeyes2521) -- i hear you ... trying to make sense of it and it doesn't seem to add up
The organization messed up this weekend. They panicked and recalled Kreider because Nash missed practice Saturday, when Mashinter should've been recalled from the get go. Instead of getting in three games with the Whale, Kreider played only one game and is now in limbo.
@NewYorkPuck @TheNYRBlog He shouldn't be with the Rangers. Let him get some form and confidence with 20 mins/night in the AHL.
