Staal Not Taken to Hospital After Puck to Eye Area
Written by Kevin DeLury on .
According to Rick Carpiniello at The Rangers Report, Marc Staal was not taken to a hospital after taking a puck to the eye in the third period last night.
Didn't really want to post this pic of Staal, but I figured it gives us a good idea of exactly where it hit him (H/T to Puck Daddy)...

Here's a GIF...
Here's the video...
...that's as scary as it gets folks.
...i'm old, so my eyes are going, but from the GIF, which to me is the best look, it seems as though the puck got him on the eyebrow, which would be best case scenario. But as reader cb1 pointed out in the comments section of the game recap last night, even if the puck hit him above the eye, there can still be swelling and pressure put on the optic nerve which can lead to vision loss.
..based on Staal's reaction and where it likely hit, I'm thinking possible broken orbital bone. Either way, let's just hope for the best.
...mandatory face shields anyone?

@tribeguy6 @cbrohmer possible broken orpital bone? Possoble? Uh like fuxking pretty well guaranfuckinteed
@rinkrat360 Nash wears a shield as well. Doesn't seem to be hurting his game too much.
That a dumb comment. Plastic pucks. Has nothing to do with face shields Brian berard almost lost he eye remember as for. It taking your vision away a lot of good players wore them bure fluery leetch did it hurt them no
im surprised bloomberg hasnt mandated faceshields yet. it's only because he hasnt seen this news yet.
Again, it's really tough to speculate, but the fact that he didn't go to the hospital immediately is a really good sign. I'm pretty sure they have an x-ray machine at MSG, so he either didn't break anything, or there could be a small fracture that didn't require any immediate attention. Either way, there are tons of blood vessels in the face/head so the amount of swelling could be pretty severe, not to mention sinuses that could get clogged up which can make breathing really difficult.
I don't think that a concussion is likely. A concussion is bruise on the brain caused by slamming into the inside wall of the skull. You can see in the slow-mo that Staal's head doesn't really get snapped backwards at all by the impact, so hopefully his brain stayed put.
Hopefully they give us an update today.
@TheNYRBlog It looks abv. the eye. He didn't go to hospital? That has to be good news right? If his eye swelled, maybe Mick cut it for him?
If he didn't go to the hospital, he's fine, but there still has to be a concern about a concussion. Incredibly good news if it's true. Literally, incredilbe - as in, I don't believe it.
People made fun of Jacques Plante for wearing a mask. But Plante recognized the game was changing. 50 years later, the slapshots are faster and players use their bodies to block the shots. Why in god's name wouldn't you wear a visor outside of some sort of stupid machismo?
Sean Avery would have avoided that shot...
I'm kidding.
I agree that face shields should be mandatory to prevent serious face damage. At this high level of play I'm surprised this doesn't happen more.
Just saw a pic of the blood dripping down his face, can't believe I didn't think there was any.... Definitely required stitches
I can't imagine they wouldn't have taken him to a hospital if there was damage to his eye that was causing vision loss. I'm hoping for the best!
@KevinDeLury correct me if I am jumping the gun but wouldn't he have gone to the hospital if there was a serious break/concern over vision. I think its enormous that he did not go could just mean a face shield so stitches and maybe a game on the bench....maybe im wrong
@maxrokz Not sure. Rangers have their own medical staff and x-ray machines so don't think a break would make it necessary to go to the hospital.
@KevinDeLury @maxrokz i think that if it was a small, simple fracture it's possible that he wouldn't have gone. but any kind of displaced (bones out of place) or comminuted (bone in multiple pieces) fracture would have sent him to the hospital right away.
I just imagine Staal making this noise. http://youtu.be/0vFVnTMwt3w
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG love the real life ron burgandy and sandra-scary-face anchors back at the studio and their smooth dulcet tones.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG Holy crap, what the hell was that! Did someone shoot a goat after that lady fell?
@KevinDeLury I don't know how many times I've watched, but everytime I put myself in danger of peeing my pants. It might be the funniest thing I've ever seen.
@GLENsatherVSglennDANZIG @KevinDeLury i dont even have to watch the video and i know the exact noise.
Praying since it happened, here's hoping he is back sooner than later.... eff it, just get back
Those legs twisting and flopping makes me want to end my life. Terrible...
That GIF makes me sick to my stomach...barring a concussion, I think he'll be back soon. But he will probably be wearing a cage.
Terrible what happened to Staal. I really hope he is OK, but jeez could we be any more of a reactionary society? Mandatory visors is now the hot question of the day. If that puck is an inch higher nobody is making a peep despite the question being fundamentally the same.
I get an event triggering a conversation, but now all of a sudden its crazy to not make visors mandatory?
@Scott_from_Jersey You are correct, but remember players used to not be able to wear helmets & goalies didn't wear masks. Not completely impossible for this to happen.
@KevinDeLury Oh I totally agree. What I take issue with is that whenever something happens, the next day we wake up and immediately everyone goes to complete extremes. "Ban this!" "Force that!" Staal got hit last night? Lets all write articles on how irresponsible it is to not make visors mandatory for everyone right now!
What happened to logic and dialogue as a precursor to progress?
@Scott_from_Jersey @KevinDeLury By nature we want to be able to fix it when things go wrong and this is something that could be fixed. I play beer league hockey and people don't always wear face shields there either. People feel it will hurt their game and this is just for fun! I wear a full cage because I just can't afford to get any uglier :). Anyway, I'd love to see it become mandatory and agree with Kevin that it is a matter of perspective and someday people will think playing without a shield is as stupid as playing without a helmet.
Ugh... that scared the crap out of me, especially the way he was reacting afterward. Was so afraid it hit im directly in the eye. And my first thought was "GET A DAMN FACE SHIELD". Honestly, I get that some guys think its harder to see with them on, but injuries like this make me wonder how the increased safety outweigh the inconvenience.I saw a report elsewhere that it was a broken orbital bone, but don't know if that was an official thing. Here's hoping it doesn't keep him out for long.
@ericha realistically, a puck doesn't hit you in the face that hard and not break something, unfortunately :(
Team needs to disclose the extent of the injury. this isn't a groin pull or back spasms.
@AnnoyingJoe C'mon Joe, I think you know better than that. Upper Body injury will be announced.
That was freaking scary! I sure hope and pray that he is OK. Please keep us updated Kevin!
@TheNYRBlog watching countless replays it looked like it got him right above the eye. Hopefully it will not be an eye injury or a concussion
I am praying and hoping for Marc that he will be okay with minimal damage. Like everyone else, I held my breadth when I saw him hit by the puck and go down to the ice. As for the shields or some other protective device, yes, they should be made mandatory. Enough is enough. Playing hockey myself -- at a speed of 1/1,000,000th of the professionals -- you realize too many times that stuff happens, with sticks, deflections, etc. I wear a cage and dislike it, mainly because it can serve as a distraction. I'm sure the same is true for the other types of shields. Still, I would never be without the protection and I think the same should be in place for the professional game, which is so fast and potentially too dangerous. JMHO.
